I was in Richmond, Virginia for a wedding and a friend and I decided to visit Beijing on Grove restaurant for dinner on the day we arrived. The restaurant serves Chinese food but I think it is an American version of Chinese food. It was a busy evening on that Friday, 20 June 2025. [[HIGHLIGHT]]DECOR - a beautiful restaurant with white and red covered shaded lamps plus a big red dragon hanging on the ceiling.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] FOOD -- I ordered the Guandong Fried Rice ($10.50) which comes with peas, carrots, and egg. I added shrimp ($5.50) as my protein. A glass of water was also brought out for me. My friend ordered the basil chicken ($18.50) with a Maine Root Beer drink ($4.50). She loved her order. I enjoyed the Guandong Fried Rice with added shrimp. It wasn't overly rich in flavour. The mixture of the peas, carrots, and egg was a simple yet appetizing combination. There was a lot of food on my plate and I may have taken a to-go box home because I remember not being able to finish my dinner. Parking is street parking. All too often (at least in this area) the most authentic type of Chinese food is found at a restaurant featuring "panda" in its name. That made our visit to Beijing On Grove such a wonderful experience. We were able to taste dishes that were what we remembered eating in Beijing near the Forbidden City. The Spicy flounder was fantastic (although I personally would have enjoyed some free-floating peppers in the sauce), and the tea and coffee smoked duck was delicious. Shared appetizer of the chili dumplings were also delightful. Lunch menu offers standardized specials, so the more conservative American palates will find many recognizable standards. The dinner menu is more expansive and features more authentic options. Our server today, Zoey, was both friendly and knowledgeable. She was attentive without being overbearing. knew the menu well and was able to make recommendations. The manager, Bill, came by to check on us and we had a nice conversation where he explained that their head chef was originally trained in China and then came to New York before arriving here. The menu clearly reflects his influence. Of special note is their Chef's Special, a fixed price group menu featuring his selections of three appetizers and five main courses. This is similar to a Japanese sushi version of an omakase experience. We are looking forward to returning with some friends or family when they visit to take advantage of this! The private room had a little window into the kitchen so we got to see the chefs at work preparing all the food. The food is massive and served family style which allows you the option to share, eat it yourself or take home a nice sized to go box! This was my first time trying Beijing On Grove and I was not disappointed! I appreciated their ability to accommodate my dietary restrictions. They had vegan options and were able to make things vegan if they were advertised as vegetarian! The staff was very accommodating and gave great recommendations. The Green Bean Stir-fry has been on my mind since I left! It was delicious! It was seasoned so well and the texture was perfect! The pineapple fried rice did not disappoint either! Had the stir fry green beans for an appetizer and the basil chicken for my main entree. I can't do spicy so I asked for the regular brown sauce with it. Then I got the Spicy Flounder served with authentic Chinese vegetables. Wow, I gave two tastes to my husband who agreed that it transported us to a San Francisco Chinatown restaurant reknowned for their spicy fish. He shared his Tea smoked Duck which was accompanied by four bao buns and true Chinese vegetable slices. Our server Zoey was very attentive and the manager, Bill, visited us. He said his Chef started out in New York and he knew how to cook for Americans and true Asian palates as reflected in the lunch specials targeted for the less adventurous guests and what we ordered. Fabulous chef and kudos for his cooking. Also, Bill said the Chef's Special includes three appetizers and five entrees from the Chef. Each person pays $50. Quite a bargain considering what we paid but the portions were very generous. There is parking in the back of the restaurant. It was filled at this prime lunch hour. We wanted to try this spot forever and finally were able to snag a patio spot on a warm summer evening. Our server Charlotte was soo attentive and friendly, and we felt truly taken care of. We started with the Eggplant Tempura app and Hot & Sour Soup - both of which were so good! The tempura is actually vegetarian as is the soup (we had to ask) and because most Hot & Sour soup is made with a non-veggie broth I am never able to try it - but this veggie version with egg and tofu was super flavorful, savory, and yummy. The eggplant was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with an awesome slightly numbing spice. For mains we shared the Fat Dragon Lo Mein, Kimchi Fried Rice, and Fat Dragon Tofu - all were super delicious. Our server kindly brought us extra sauce for the noodles which we requested and appreciated. Beijing on Grove has been recommended to me so many times, so I was thrilled to finally go there this past week for dinner. The menu had a good variety of appetizers, noodle/rice dishes, entrees, and desserts. I opted for the Chicken and Broccoli and my friend ordered the Tangerine Beef. We were both thrilled with the quality and quantity of the food that we received. They came out to our exact specifications and tasted delicious. Additionally, our server was super sweet and attentive. The restaurant is located on Libby so it is near lots of great shops that you can have a fun day or night of great food and shopping. Beijing on Grove! Let me start by saying service was great. We have been dining here for a few years and we have been pleased each time; however this visit feels different. They no longer offer Saki (not a deal breaker) and when we ordered the New Zealand Rack of Lamb we were told they are no longer available, but still listed on the menu (hate that). That dampened the visit. We changed our selection to the Crispy Crab Wonton, Crispy Chicken Rolls and Crispy Asian Five Spice Ribs (I believe two of those spices were missing). The food is not the same caliber. In my opinion this is the place for fried rice, noodles, appetizers and drinks. read more

I love Fat Dragon so I've been wanting to try Beijing on Grove for quite a while now. I found some time this week to stop by and I was so underwhelmed. I will say it's very cute and clean inside. Additionally, the staff were friendly and professional but the food just was not great -- especially compared to Fat Dragon. The food is great and the ambiance is elevated casual! This time of year I love to go and sit on the patio out front but it's also the perfect spot for anytime of year. The interior is fresh and semi industrial making it the perfect place to run in and pick up carry out or sit for hours and catch up with friends! The portions are huge and so delicious! I usually end up slitting an entree and I'm still full at the end. The food is always fresh and made to order. I have a sesame allergy and that is used a lot in Asian cuisine, but there they have made things without it for me! Get the chili dumplings, I repeat get the chili dumplings! Ok, now that that's off my chest, time to let you know about my experience. I really liked Beijing on Grove. I came with my friends on a Tuesday night. It was busy, but not terribly so. We got seated immediately. Our waiter was extremely kind and personable. Everyone got a cocktail at our table. I hate to admit that I don't remember which one I ordered, but I think it had sage in it and was decent. My friends loved their cocktails and got at least two. Our waiter gave fun recommendations from the cocktail list too. As for food, I was pleasantly surprised! Our group did family style, and of the four different dishes we shared, we loved three! Here's what we tried: ***Chili Dumplings***: In case you missed it, GET THESE! We ordered this twice because we loved it so much. These dumplings are so QQ! (Yes, I just learned this word and find it to be so appropriate for my Yelp reviews. QQ= "bounciness associated with fresh handmade fishballs, glutinous rice balls, and certain types of noodles...Asian version of al-dente, QQ foods are soft but not mushy") They're cooked to perfection and the flavor is sweet with a nice kick. The kick isn't too spicy, so I'd even recommend them to people who don't like spicy food! I would go back to Beijing on Grove just for these. Chow Fun: While the dumplings were everything, this was not. I learned that chow fun is mean to be a bit on the plainer side, but not as bland as this dish was. I wouldn't order this one again. Peking Spring Rolls (Veggie): They were yummy! Nice crunch, just like spring rolls should be. Nothing life changing, but still tasty. Tangerine Beef: The sauce had a very good flavor. I love this place - takeout and dine-in food/service both consistently great. The vibe inside is hipster RVA cool with a Chinese/Asian flair (a more spacious Fat Dragon!). There's street parking plus their own designated parking lot behind the building. Plenty of roomy seating/tables and huge bar space with yummy cocktails. The kimchi fried rice and spicy flounder are my absolute favorites. I've been a couple times recently for happy hour. They have happy hour daily from 5-7pm (closed on Monday). The service is excellent and the food is all pretty good! I've been able to find street parking on Grove every time but they also have a parking lot in the back. They could be a little more consistent. The spice level of the hot and sour soup has varied. We ordered 2 steak dishes with the same level of doneness and one was overcooked while the other was perfect. A great spot overall, especially if you can handle spice! read more

Chinese but upscale is the simple review. And that's truly all you need to know. Go, you won't regret it! I came in town to see my boyfriend and we both decided on Chinese for dinner. Beijing on Grove had pretty good reviews so we went for it. The restaurant is located directly off the street with plenty of free street parking. The area was pretty busy for a Thursday night as there are a lot of other restaurants as well. Super cute outside seating area and inside was beautifully decorated with low lights and nice ambiance. They even had someone singing and playing the guitar once we were seated. I will say she was pretty loud though lol, so I wasn't necessarily upset when her set ended for the night. I can't remember the name of our waitress but she was awesome with the suggestions and my boyfriend and I both LOVED our food. I got the noodles and he got the basil beef. Both plates were HOT when they came out and to know me is to know hot food is my jam. Everything was sooo fresh and tasted absolutely delicious! The curry noodles were light and delicate but filling. The basil beef?! To DIE FOR! So tender and juicy and the sauce was absolutely divine. Our drinks were also good. The lavender spritz is soft and refreshing with a little bite of Tito's in the back. This quaint space is a quiet but fun location to have lunch! The parking can get tricky as they offer street parking and a lot in the back that is shared by multiple businesses, but there is a paid lot next to it for $8 in case you need it. The service was wonderful and the staff-person was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer questions on the dishes, which is always a plus! For apps, we had the Chili dumplings, and it was so good that my friend ordered a second one to go! The spice level was there, it was moist, it was perfectly cooked, the meat inside was juicy, and the sauce was perfect. For my entree, we both had Enter the Dragon, a mix of seafood with veggies and rice. The dishes took a few minutes longer than most places but I think it's because they cook each dish individually and it was absolutely worth it. I was attending a workshop at St Stephen's just a few blocks away and thought I'd check this place out for lunch. Awesome! I ordered from their really tempting lunch menu and decided on their eggplant with garlic sauce... one of my favorite Chinese dishes to order out. There's was done perfectly! The eggplant was firm,not mushy. The sauce was a delicious mix of sweet, tangy with a hint of spice. The lunch came with a bowl of soup (I got hot and sour and it was excellent!),rice and a fried spring roll which was light and airy,not dense, and it was prefect too! It was a very filling lunch! And all this for about $12 including tip! Drink works at to your bill.i just had water. The service was prompt and friendly and food came out reasonably quickly. One Star: A Disappointing First and Last Visit Reservation Details: Party of 2, Reservation for Michael Date: 12/27/2024, Time: 7:00 PM Seated at Table #2 We were excited to try Beijing on Grove for the first time, but sadly, the experience was a disaster from start to finish. Arriving 30 minutes early, we planned to enjoy an adult beverage at the bar before being seated. The hostess informed us our table was ready early, which was surprising, as we were told seating at this time was impossible. Seizing the auspicious moment, we agreed to review the menu while having a drink at the table. Our waitress, though pleasant and knowledgeable, warned us the bar was "backed up"--a confusing statement since neither the bar nor restaurant appeared particularly busy. Despite this, our first round of drinks took 15 minutes to arrive, with no follow-up from our waitress in the meantime. For appetizers, we ordered the Peking Spring Rolls and Ginger Salad, along with another round of drinks. The appetizers arrived, but the second round of drinks did not. We had to reorder, and the drinks took another 15 minutes to reach our table, again without any interim contact from our server. The ginger salad was tasty, but the Peking Spring Rolls were flavorless and watery. For mains, I ordered the Kung Pao Tofu with sides of kimchi and fried rice, while my dining companion opted for Kimchi Fried Rice with tofu. These dishes took 15-20 minutes to arrive- no problems there. The Kung Pao Tofu was excellent, but unfortunately, both rice dishes were inedible. They carried the distinct taste and smell of burnt rice--likely from scorched oil or an overheated pot. If you've ever burned oil, you know the smell/taste. When we flagged down the manager to share our concerns, his response was astonishing. After smelling the rice himself, he claimed the "smokey" taste was intentional, describing it as a "delicious char flavor" from the wok. Having burned rice ourselves, we knew better--this was not intentional. Still, we gave the rice another try, but the acrid, burnt flavor made it impossible to eat. To further validate our experience, we spoke with the party seated next to us at Table 3, who had also ordered rice dishes. When we asked if they had noticed the "delicious char flavor," they laughed and emphatically said "no." Our waitress, finally checking in after another 15-minute gap, handled the situation appropriately by offering to remove the uneaten rice dishes from our bill. Unfortunately, the manager apparently refused to honor this and declined to return to our table to discuss the matter further. Mistakes happen--burnt rice and delayed service could have been forgiven with proper acknowledgment and recovery. However, the mishandling of the situation, especially from management, turned this visit into an irredeemable failure. We won't be returning and are deeply disappointed to cancel premature plans to bring family, friends, and colleagues here.
