I ordered takeout and appreciated that my food was ready right on time, as promised. I took the safe route with the shrimp fried rice. The shrimp were flavorful, a good size, and cooked to perfection, but I wasn't a huge fan of the rice itself. My girlfriend ordered a steak dish, which appeared to be steak and peppers or possibly Hunan steak. I tried it, and it was simply delightful! It was tender, flavorful, and plentiful. Did I mention how much steak she had? And how tender the meat was? My God, that alone was worth the 30-minute drive from my side of town. My husband and I tried Chen's for the first time and were not disappointed. We started with egg drop soup. I haven't had an egg drop soup this flavorful in so long! I was delicious and the crunch from the complementary wonton strips really set things off. Next, I ordered the shrimp in hot garlic sauce with fried rice. My husband ordered the sesame chicken with fried rice. Both were absolutely delicious. My only critique is that I wish the sauce for the garlic shrimp was spicier, but other than that, no complaints! Tried them recently for the 1st time. Pleasantly surprised. Was told they were good and it's comfirmed. Have moved them into my top 3 in RVA for Chinese food. Gives Peking a run for its money. Five stars for the warm and friendly family atmosphere, but the food failed to hit the mark and is more four stars. Ordered the staple General Tso's which I found to be too overfried and crispy, where instead you want to taste more tender chicken. The lunch specials are a great deal though, where you get soup and an egg roll for a reasonable price. The steamed dumplings were large but mostly dough vice filling. I liked the complimentary fried wontons and sauces they bring out, nice touch. Again, good value for the money, although I thought $3.50 for a diet coke was a tad high. Yes, there's a robust takeout business, but this place is still a real sit down restaurant with great food and service. No store bought wonton crispy noodles here, only homemade. As someone who lives in the neighborhood, we are lucky to have Chens. Almost all Food lion shopping centers throughout VA and NC seem to have a Chinese restaurant. This is by far the best one I have ever seen! Most of them are low quality takeout Chinese spots, but Chens is very authentic and the food is awesome. It's well priced and high quality. This was our first visit to Chen's and we CANNOT believe that this gem is just minutes away from where we live! Upon arrival, we were sat immediately and greeted by who we believe is either the manager or owner of the place. It definitely felt like a "homey" establishment which we love! We started off with the pork dumplings and chicken egg rolls which were phenomenal. We inquired about the spicy & tangy dumplings but were unsure. While we were waiting for our food to our arrive, the owner let us try the spicy & tangy dumplings and they were to die for. Seriously, I will be dreaming about them tonight. We ordered the crispy general tso beef as our entree to split and it was amazing too! We were so full but couldn't stop stuffing our faces because of how great all of the food was. I've been to Chen's many times for lunch. Those in-house experiences are usually good, friendly, and quick. I haven't had good experiences with takeout or delivery, unfortunately. I see Chen's does a lot of takeout business, so I asked satisfied take-out customers how they're ordering. All the happy takeout customers appear to call their orders in directly. I've had bad experiences ordering at Chen's from grub hub, door dash, and yelp, so I won't be doing that ever again. read more

This is probably the best Chinese I've had for lunch. I got the hunan beef lunch special and food was absolutely phenomenal. The beef texture was different then other Chinese restaurants. The egg drop soup was very flavorful. The fried rice was good, but should be noted didn't have any veggies in it. It was just fried rice and some eggs. Ambiance is very nice and warm/welcoming so definitely can eat inside vs just take-out (but they do have take-out and had many orders). Service was wonderful and everyone very friendly! My first visit, I had 2 people stop at my table to rave about how great it was and that I was going to love it. They were right! It was very quiet and chill in there.
