I haven't had luck since the last time I was here 4 years ago. And prior to that, Pelham Bake Shop on Crosby Ave in the Pelham Bay Area of The BX had the Italian cakes you would swoon for. Hell, I still remember the moist Raspberry+Dark Chocolate cake I'd gotten for my daughter's 9th B'day. That era is long gone. Service is great. The glass shelves are stocked with the typical pignoli cookies, rainbow, thumbprints, etc- even a chocolate mousse cup. The air is thick with food smells instead of sugar+butter. Most recently, I ordered as swiftly as possible just to get out. The 1/4 pound of cookies I brought to my cousin visiting from the homeland were bland and my mousse cup was horribly lumpy. We all know price of ingredients are at the forefront. The sad reality is that a lot has changed during 'these times' and Pelham Bake S. is part of it. While this place is cemented in the neighborhood, these folks just yucked my yum. read more

Wow: it's been a few years since I went to the Pelham bake shop. I actually worked for them about 25 years ago at their old location. The woman who owned the place was the witch to beat all witches but she would spit on the crap they are turning out here now. I read the reviews while I sent in my children to order. Two eclairs and two napoleon. My napoleon tasted like it had sat in that fridge for the last month. Completely inedible. I tried and I gave up. The cream was coagulated. Came here today to get some cookies for after dinner. Asked for a pound and when they weighed it was a pound and a half. We said leave it, it won't go to waste. 39.00 later they went to waste. Not very good at all. It's not that they weren't fresh but they were lacking in taste and texture. There were some red leafs shaped ones that had a very strong artificial/chemical taste. The rainbow cookies were the best of the bunch but not stellar by any stretch. Fair at best. This was my first and last time here. read more

When I first moved to this area my boyfriend was the one to tell me about this bakery. I've been ordering cakes and getting pastries from here for almost 2 years now and they never disappoint. The cakes here are very dry. I ordered a few cupcakes to eat with my family for my dad's birthday and when I got into one I was so disappointed. It was like a chocolate muffin with Cool Whip on top and even then, not a moist muffin at all. The cookie I had was okay, but honestly I could tell what they sent was old. If you have to give people old pastries and cakes just to get rid of them then you should close down. It's disrespectful to the customer. This wasn't even like FIFO old where it would only be a little bit older than fresh product, it was at least three days old as it's borderline stale. If you know baked goods you know cupcakes already can be a problem with retaining moisture during the baking process so to bite into one that had the texture of dry bread was not pleasant. I have worked in bakeries before and would never sell the cakes I was sold to a customer. Also, if you cannot accommodate a request let the customer know. I have never seen a cupcake have two cookies stuck to it so sloppily in my life. Either a child runs this bakery or the owners have given up on quality. read more

This is the original old fashion bakery. I usually buy their tiramisu (both flavors) and let me tell you, their delicious. Its a norma Italian bakery. Seems like it's family owned. The cookies are good, strawberry shortcake is great, the "lobster" pastry is adorable and good as well. If you want some old fashion original Italian bake goods, THIS IS IT. The only reason why I gave it a 4 is because over the years, it's gotten expensive. $17 for a tiramisu cake? I mean I'll still buy it but not as often. read more

very disappointIng. My husband bought me my all time favorite napoleon cake for Valentin's Day that we've been getting here for years. Tiramisuuuuuu. I love youuuuu. You are delicious and creamy and coffee-like. You have cocoa powder sprinkled on top of you like a baby's bottom. I stepped in here and was reminded of a time when Italian pastries tasted like food, before Manhattan's Little Italy got touristy, and before Belmont became Dirty Look City. The cookies look so tasty and as do the pastries, but I just knew I wanted tiramisu. It was cool, creamy, and amazing. Worth the price, too, only around $3.50. I sampled three of my fave mini pastries from two places this past Sunday. A cream puff, an eclair and a powdered raspberry cookie. Their ecclair was so good I took a look at the display case from my seat and wondered how many I could eat before getting sick. They're that good. The cream puff was a bit too sweet. I chose the black and white. Should have gone with the plain. Their custard is top notch and this is in comparison to Veniero's. And the cookie was really good although not the best I've had. This is a nice little neighborhood spot. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Their baked goods are really tasty. I also recommend their cakes. The spinach pie is raw, the macaroons are nasty there is no almond taste to eat, it filled of artificial lemon flavor and died with green my son's teeth were green all the way home. This was my favorite bakery until a while ago... On said day I was passing by with my aunt, and I said "lets get a rainbow cookie! I haven't had one in ages!" So we went in, go the cookie, and then went to the drug store. On our way back I am still munching on my cookie, and as we pass by the bakery window, lo and behold there is a mouse hopping all over the cakes and pies in the window!! EWWWWWWWW!!!!!! First I spit out the cookie in my mouth... Then I tapped on the window and alerted all inside (staff and patrons) about the MOUSE in the window... My husband placed an order for me 3-4 days before I needed it for a brunch. When I went to pick it up it wasn't packed or even ready. I ordered Boston cream donuts with Chocolate topping and had no choice but to take what they had which was powered sugar because I was told "they didn't make the Boston cream like that today" meanwhile I placed and order paid $17.00 for a dozen donuts and half of them were incorrect. The crumb cake is horrid. Dry and taste stale and so dry. The jelly donuts has less than a teaspoon of jelly and the Boston cream were not what I paid for. I have come to this bakery daily for the last 3 years and let me just say this... It's a gamble. You'll be lucky if your 2.50 croissant is fresh. You'll be lucky if anything is fresh. I've bought rock hard bread, and if you do complain they do offer you the next one fresh and free. When they sell their croissants for 1.50 it's been out for days, so beware. I really want to love this place, but I've been beyond annoyed. The people who work there are great. Even the extremely serious woman in the morning is a sweetheart and makes awesome coffee. Everyone is nice. However, $3 for a large coffee... was ridiculous. Then they hiked up the price to 3.25. Ordered a tiramisu cake that they said would feed 6-10 people. Got there and paid $18 for a cake that would at best feed 3-4 people. And it was not great. Decent but not a good or great tiramisu. We moved away from this area a long time ago but get back from time to time. Decided to try a couple of their formally delicious cheese danish, very disappointing. I realized something was different when I picked up the danish, it didn't have the same weight as before. Took a bite, no cheese. Finally found a thin layer of the cheese mixture, which on the whole made the pastry very dry. Friends have told me that Pelham Bake Shop has cut back the same way on many of their other products. You can't beat their Crumb Buns! The Toasted Almond Cakes are AAAAAMAZING! I usually get some chocolate covered strawberries too. Yummm!
