While most people would think to flock to Arthur Ave when looking for an Italian bakery in the Bronx, you cannot rule Sal & Dom's out. My family, friends, and I have been customers of theirs for years - and in my opinion other bakeries don't hold a candle to their offerings. Like most Italian bakeries - Sal & Dom's offers the essentials: cannoli, lobster tails, sfogliatelle, and a large variety of cookies. Their American offerings shouldn't be overlooked - they have a lot of mini pastries, sweet breads, rolls, and traditional cakes as well. I love their sheet cakes - the sponge is so airy, and you can choose from a large variety of creams, custards, and fruit as filling. Usually I'll opt for whipped cream frosting because it makes the cake super light. Besides the cakes, you really can't go wrong with anything Sal & Dom's offers; they have some of the best cannoli and rainbow cookies I've ever had, and during the holidays they serve up a mean cuccidati. I was in NY and needed to purchase a cake so I came here. When I was trying to decide on what to get there were 2 customers who were RAVING about how delicious everything was and how much I was going to love it but I was not impressed with what I got. One lady told me they have been in business for 50 years & that she had been coming all her life. I enjoyed the cannoli, the cream was different from anything that I've had it reminded me a bit of a coconut cream which I really loved. The slice of cake tasted like a dry pound cake with less flavor than a usual buttery pound cake so I threw out more than half of it. I also purchased a vanilla cake with Bavarian cream filling which I would rate a 3.5/5. The cream was good but nothing to rave about. I've been coming here since I was 2 years old. They never let me down. The freshest cakes, icings, creams. They are really so unmatched in the bake game it's not a joke. I get my strawberry shortcake ordered and made for my birthday. I love it, I travel from way over in NJ to get it. They take custom orders for pick up. This has been a family owned bakery for as long as I can remember. My Daddy used to work close to here and knew the owners. Very disappointed! I sent them an email with a picture of what I was looking for and they said they can do it. I could have made a better cake myself! I emailed them letting them know how dissatisfied I was. The response I received was even more disappointing. The only problem they could see and was apologetic for was the drip. I told them I'm bringing their cake back because I was too embarrassed to show up with this cake and wanted a refund and they said they could only offer me a 50% discount. I ordered a new cake with another bakery and now have to pay for another cake. Terrible customer service!! Went back to return the cake and to no surprise the baker who has no business decorating modern cakes responded by saying just because I thought I was cute by giving him a bad review on yelp, he would be retracting his original offer by not refunding me at all. If I were to go on a global dessert crawl, France would be right up there. As would the good old U.S. of A. And a whole slew of Asian countries; Japan, in particular. Italy, frankly, would be somewhere in the middle. After Germany and Austria, and right before South American countries like Brazil, Uruguay, and Columbia. All that being said, I'll concede I love a rainbow cookie, done right (read: moist and not cloyingly sweet). And glazed ricotta cookies are pretty darn delizioso. But if I had to choose one thing, I'd go with sfogliatella. I heart its flaky layers of almost croissant-like pastry and simple custard filling. The iteration I tried here reminded me of my favorite local ish sfogliatella from Dom's Bakery Grand in Hoboken, New Jersey. In other words, I really dug it, and was especially into the little bits of candied fruit in the custard filling. Admittedly, there could have been more of that filling, but lovely, overall. Tried a St. Joseph's Day ricotta cream-filled sfingi, too and that was quite nice, but if anything's gonna get me to schlep all the way back to the Bronx from BK, it's the sfogliatella. read more

Being established since 1956 it is clear to see that Sal & Dom's has stood the test of time. They are located smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It wasn't always this way, as other businesses that were in the surrounding area have now been replaced by homes. Upon entering on this early weekend morning, you walk into a bright and clean pastry shop with friendly and efficient workers. There is a long glass display with multiple varieties of cakes, pies, cookies, plus large and small Italian pastries. From the time I entered to the time I left, you could sense their popularity. The businesses phone was constantly ringing and customers were strolling in and out of this place. Very popular indeed. These perfectly arranged pastries, turned out to be a big hit for my friends barbecue. She had a ton of food but these cute mini creations that tasted just as good as their grander versions were a part of the talk of the evening. My Italian friends gave me props for bringing such authentic treats. ::wait a sec while I give myself a pat on the back:: So all these years I've come out to Allerton Ave. to see family and friends that live a mere few blocks away and I had no idea this place existed...ha, thanks for sharing peeps! It's a bit small inside and parking can be horrendous. Sometimes the young girls that work there get a bit frazzled when it's busy, but otherwise they're very sweet and try their best. I don't know what happened with the cake I ordered. I requested a traditional Italian cake with vanilla and chocolate custard. They asked if I wanted Strega - I said yes. The cake was beautifully decorated, I can't fault them on that. But it was inedible. My family has been getting birthday/special occasion cakes from Sal and Doms since they were at their old location on Allerton. From the 60s on. And I've never seen a cake come out this color. It was almost neon yellow and a lot of my guests said it tasted like lemon. No one ate it at my sons Baptism Party. Most of it was thrown out. And I was out almost 70 dollars. We kept the cake for a few more days in the fridge and attempted to eat a piece - and it FERMENTED. And tasted like vinegar. Very disappointed. read more

I'vE had a bunch of different things here, the minis are very good and my favorite is the pignoli tart, and pignoli cookies. My least favorite is the lobster tails, they are quite long, about 6 inches and amazingly filled ALL the way through with the cream of your choice, but the pastry isn't crispy it's hard and crusty! I've had lobster tails before elsewhere and the pastry was light and crispy which Is why I got them here but they aren't anything like the ones I had in little Italy :( I'll still be back for my minis. read more

On a rainy weekday, I went to pick up an assorted box of mini pastries, and man, did I find the right place. It's got a sign in the window asking for one customer or family at a time, which folks were respecting. It's an old school bakery for cookies and pastries and cakes, not a ton of breads. I got about a pound of mixed pastries- eclair with Boston Creme filling, cannoli, pineapple mousse, strawberry mousse, Napoleon, mini cheesecake, pignoli tarts, and some rugelach. What surprised me was how fresh each item was. The cannoli shell cracked and crumbled as it was bitten. The cheesecake was creamy and not dried out and gummy. The mousse tasted fresh and light, the choux in the eclair and Napoleon was neither soggy or flat. And the rugelach would have delighted my grandmother. Across the board, carrying that many assorted items and all of them done well with high enough turnover not to go stale is astounding. I will definitely be back! read more
