I was not expecting that much of pelican's perch bar and Grill, considering the overall rating was a 3 However, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food, and I was very disappointed in the service. I had the Shrimp Tacos that were flavorful. The service however was not very good. We sat down and were eventually told it was tiki bar style where we had to go to the tiki bar to get food. Once we were told this, we also asked for an umbrella to shade the sun at our table. When we did we were told that umbrellas weren't supposed to be open because of the wind. At the same exact time we were told this, all the tables umbrellas were up and there were two umbrellas unused behind the bar. It seems that the staff just didn't want to help us. read more

This review is for the off season menu: I appreciate places offering cheaper options during off season, to make it more affordable for the locals and giving the restaurant continued business. However, it would be best to just discount your regular menu slightly, but keep the quality of food the same. We can go anywhere during the tourist on-season and get a truly delicious $15 burger + fries around Ocean Isle (& even cheaper at Beaches). So when we saw the $10 off-season menu burger for Pelicans Perch we assumed the quality would still be good but that it was discounted as a way to keep busy during the off season. But it was reminiscent of a school lunch burger or a fast food burger (but even worse). The chili was ok, and that was why I did give it 2 stars. After that experience, I could not bother to go back to try the regular menu or recommend this place. So their regular menu may be wonderful. But serving an extremely low quality burger for $10 as a type of special for locals was disappointing. read more

We were staying in Ocean Isle Beach for the weekend and decided to try this place for an early dinner today. They have indoor, outdoor and bar seating. It was a rainy day so we chose an indoor table. The menu offers about a dozen appetizers, a dozen handhelds, ten salads and ten entrees. I opted for the fried fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries come with a delicious apple butter for dipping. My fellow diners had the big mac salad, the chicken wings, the blackened fish sandwich with hush puppies, and a mermaid water drink. We all enjoyed our meals. Service was fairly quick. This laid back, local joint is perfect for a bar like food experience! Had a great fried fish sandwich here paired with hush puppies. The fish was tender and fried perfectly without being greasy. The hush puppies were paired with a honey butter dipping sauce which is cravable! Others in my party ordered tuna tacos, chef salad, kids hotdog, Caesar salad, app sampler and fried shrimp and all had big remarks! Service was very kind and attentive. Bangin shrimp and hash puppy basket. The bangin shrimp were good. The crab cakes were over cooked. The hush puppies and onion rings tasted old like they had been sitting for a long time and not made fresh. The Mac n cheese cost an extra $1 for a side and was literally a couple bits worth it wasn't much bigger than the sauce container and nothing special. I would not recommend. read more

The itemized receipt was also missing, so there was no way to know there was an additional gratuity added without paying close attention to the original receipt. Good food at really nice little place right in Ocean Isle. Been coming to OIB for 40 years yet never ate here. Yes it is a bar -but indoor/outdoor seating and a surprisingly great menu. I had SSpring salad w/blackened shrimp and the shrimp were large, fresh and perfectly seared -and plentiful (8 or so) on top of a fresh salad. Others raved about their big mac salad, onion rings, burgers and fries. Will definitely go again. Bar is very large and perfectly seared for a beer and sports viewing. We went on a busy June Saturday-so although we didn't have to wait -be forwarned though the restaurant is pretty warm inside with everyone in/out and beach heat. read more

It's open every day. When we went, Yelp said it was closed. 3 of us sat at the bar waiting for our table. The folks at the bar were super kind; made room for us. We ended up liking the bartender and being able to see sports that we ate there. Food was delicious and fresh. Seems like a scratch kitchen. We've been to Pelican's Perch several times over the past 2 years. The food is tasty and the service is good. Not on our last visit. We recently came on a weeknight for some light snacks. The server took our drink order and then our food order. We waited for 30 minutes and the server told us our food would be out shortly. She came to us again and said we are waiting on our chicken tenders. A third time the manager told us the cook burned his hand and the other cooks were helping him and that they are working on our order. It was close to and hour before our order arrived. The manager told us she would adjust our bill and took off 10% on a $55 tab. We were given 3 $5 coupons to be used one at a time and 1 per table. I will also mention that when our food arrived we were the only patrons dining inside. We will not be returning to Pelican's Perch again. Although the manager apologized, this was a terrible way to do business. read more

We came to the Pelican Perch with a party of six and there was no wait. We were kindly greeted by the host at the host stand and quickly seated. Ethan was our server. Ethan was very attentive. He also made sure our drinks were always full. The food did take a while to come out so if you are in a rush this is not the place to go. The food was good we ordered a variety such as hamburger steak, shrimp, tacos, etc. My only complaints is that the cheese fries had liquid "fake" cheese and the tacos were slightly bland/flavorless. Pelican's is subpar. There's limited sit down restaurants on the island and they all get pretty crowded, especially on check in days, which is when we ate here. We were seated fairly quickly which was great but then we waited over an hour for our lack luster food to arrive. Our waitress, who was very sweet, came by several times to let us know our food would on its way. But sadly she was mistaken. When it did arrive, it was so not worth the wait or the price. The lettuce on mine and my husband's fish sandwiches was so soggy and wilted we immediately took it off. My daughter in law ordered a fried shrimp plate to split with her daughter and they brought out a kids shrimp which was WAY over cooked or possibly old. We asked for the correct food and instead of rectifying that order ahead of the others, she waited so long she told them to cancel it. They just need to get it together and not rest on their laurels with a captive audience. It could be great! read more

We lucked out and came on Friday night when the band was playing. Great dinner and drinks while enjoying a live band at the park across the street. The drinks were all great and the food was superb. Last minute decision to go here because it was on the island and pouring rain. We were on the golf cart and couldn't leave even though we wanted to since there was an hour long wait. But they were very helpful in finding us a place to squeeze in and we ended up not having to wait long at all. There was also a party of 8 and a party of 12 that had just been seated. I was assuming it would take forever with all the people and decided to just settle in because of the rain. I was pleasantly surprised when our food came out so fast! Probably faster than most other restaurants we have visited, even though this one was really packed. The food was also delicious. I had the pelican bites and strawberry salad and loved BOTH. I wasn't even that hungry and ate every last bite. The service was great, even with a few big parties she never let us run out of drinks and we didn't have to wait for anything we needed. After our visit I was shocked to see how low the score is on here. So if you haven't gone recently I'd definitely try it again! Bottom line: Pelican's Perch has seen some improvement lately, definitely earning one more star from my initial review years ago. OK food selections, good bar, but the service each of the visits this trip was the strong point. The Deets: Usually if all other venues are exhausted, you usually find yourself at Pelican's Perch at one time or another when at OIB. However in the latest two week annual vacation there, we found ourselves there multiple times actually. I have to say, they've made it to A-OK status for me after the last few visits this year. The food, while still not particularly five star type of items yet IMO, has improved a bit in recent times. The hamburger steak was so-so from the first trip this year but I liked their updated version of their "Pelican Bites" (fried haddock nuggets) on the next trip...pretty enjoyable for fried seafood nuggets. I was personally less impressed with the hush puppies however this time. The last visit this trip, I got the club sandwich and again was not bad with the real winner that visit being their fries. The fries have definitely improved from years past, at least the ones that came with the club sandwich. The bar was good as usual. What stood out most was the service on these visits this time...all great servers that were very nice, helpful, and checked on us frequently. In particular, Curtis was a standout...two thumbs up! We definitely felt that Pelican's Perch went up a star this visit and hopefully stay on this trajectory in years to come. read more

Not sure of the mediocre reviews but our mahi tuna tacos and pelican bites were amazing. High quality, great service, great drinks, open till 10:00 on a Wednesday. We got into town late and they saved us by letting us order prior to closing thus allowing us to slam down a few drinks and a quick meal before closing. This place has potential. I like the ambiance but our order took forever. I had OIB shrimp tacos and each had 3 shrimp drowned in pink slaw. Shrimp were good once I rescued them from the overdressed slaw. Tortilla chips on the side were just ok. Notning special. My companions had the greek pita and enjoyed that dish. Worst dining experience I've ever had. Seriously. They didn't have our reservation - first red flag. Waited for over an hour for the first half of our party to get their food, then the other half didn't come out for another 20 minutes. The shrimp boil is peel and eat shrimp with no old bay, a soggy half an ear of corn, a baked potato and a shriveled up piece of onion. The sides were incorrect on several orders. When we asked for more seasoning it never came. The wait staff and management were incredibly rude and made nothing but excuses. We tried to cancel the food and leave, but it was finally apparently coming out. They told us to go ahead and eat it - even though we made it clear we were very unhappy and wanted to leave. We tried it. It was awful. Not sure how food is cold when you've been waiting well over an hour. THEN they tried to charge us full price because, "well, you ate it". Crab bites are deep-fried balls of crab cake mixture, also very tasty, not greasy but a little on the wet side for my taste. Grilled shrimp were perfectly cooked and a generous portion for the price. Yikes. I dined here with friends while visiting Ocean Isle Beach for a wedding back in October while we were waiting to check into our rental house. The place looked like a cute beach bar restaurant from what I had seen online, but I chose wrong LOL. We sat at the bar and service was meh, nothing special but not entirely terrible. We had some beers while we waited on food and they had a decent selection of drafts. Then...... our food came. We ordered some appetizers to split and snack on; wings, cheese fries, and chicken tenders etc. Judging by how fast it all came out led me to believe most of this shit was probably frozen. Everything was so tasteless and plain. None of us finished any of our food and needless to say we didn't box any of it up, afterwards all 3 of us had stomach issues once we got back to our room LOL. I dined here in October so this may have changed by now, but from my point of view they weren't really following Covid protocols. No social distancing, and only a few staff members were wearing masks during our visit, so I wouldn't dine here if that bothers you. I will say though that the place is decorated really cute!
