Went in late on a Friday 8pm for a 9pm close It was busy so the service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush. Our first time eating Jamaican food. We weren't a little nervous, we ordered ribs and plantains and coconut shrimp to share. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the sauce on the side in a large pour bottle on the table was amazing and very different than expected. The plantains were delicious my GF is of Puerto Rican discent loved them said good plantains are hard to find. The coconut shrimp was perfectly cooked and crunch the sauce was very nice. One key thing here THE FOOD IS NOT SPICY AT ALL. !!! That was our fear it's flavorful not spicy the owner said his mother couldn't handle spice and the recipes are done with that in mind. read more

Haven't been to sugar shack in 12 years and no clue why it took so long to go back! We started out with the sample platter. Everyone was delicious as was the complimentary Johnny bread. We dug in so fast, I didn't get pics of our entrees! Between the 4 of us we had the ribs, the marinated steak, the curry chicken and the jerk chicken. All was so good and plenty of food! My family had takeout prepared for a 70th birthday celebration. We usually go there once a summer but we had such a big group this is what we did. Literally, fall off the bone ribs, chicken wings grilled in a special marinade. Perfection! They gave us special sauces in ramekins. Sugar Shack is my favorite place to eat at Ocean Isle Beach. We only come once a year for our summer vacation, but I even have a favorite server who has been there year after year. In fact, I recognize a lot of the staff each year. I don't know what I do if I couldn't get, my annual fix at the Sugar shack. *Tourist Review* This place is such a lovely and understated establishment. This is my second time and it's consistent in service and food quality. Food: The ribs and steak are truly their special dishes. Although their other dishes are delicious, these two entrees have that extra pizazz. I got the ribs for a second time and they were both amazing and tender both separate times. We tried some other dishes such as curried goat and brown stew chicken and they were tender and flavorful. Also, their appetizer wings are a must! Service: Servers were great from the host to our personal waiter. No complaints here. Environment: The dining area is cozy. It isn't a huge restaurant but is composed of booths and tables. I would recommend a reservation as we observed a wait outside and the restaurant becoming very occupied shortly after opening. There is an outdoor waiting area where you may sit as you wait for your table. I recommend reserving and coming here for a warm hearty meal. read more

Came to this area on vacation 15 years ago and been back every year since. We tried the Sugar Shack our first year and eat here at least once every visit. Great menu and really great food. We came in on a Friday night at 6:30. The server had an odd attitude really. He told us they were out of snapper, steak, grilled chicken, and shrimp. The only things left on the menu were jerk chicken and pork, ribs, and a chicken stew. I had a hamburger that was completely underwhelming. Large burger on a plain bun with a piece of lettuce, no fixings. The fried plantain was good. Our friends enjoyed the ribs and my husband enjoyed the stew. But nothing I had planned to order was available. Just odd to be out of a majority of the menu. Each year while at the beach we make sure we stop here for at least 1 meal. The food does not disappoint! The best steak and rice you'll ever have! The jerk sauce is so good too, we always buy a bottle to take home. The service is always great, fast and polite. They love telling the story over how the restaurant got started. Do not go here! First we arrived with 22 people instead of our reservation of 25. We tried to call to let them know we had less people, but they did not open until five.The hostess was very rude and said they turned away people to seat our party. Did I mention we had to put down a deposit for the reservation? Honestly should've just left then. Then they had no chicken tenders for my son. They also serve no liquor. My other son was super excited to try their steak and we were the first party in the restaurant. After two people ordered steak they said they were out. We also wanted bread and they told us they were running low and could not give us any more. Honestly, I have been to countless restaurants in my life, and this was by far the worst experience I've ever had. Everyone was just super rude especially the hostess. My mom thought the jerk chicken wings were to die for, they were perfectly spiced with a flavor that lingers in the best way, and the meat absolutely falls off the bone. If I were you I would get the chicken wings . The curried chicken with rice was also incredible, though I must warn you, it does stain your nails if you have polish on them, but totally worth it!! This is one of those places that I don't get to eat at all the time. But it the place you want to keep under wraps so that no one knows how good the food is. Get the early and have a reservation because you can't get in. Food is always good fresh and lots of good tasty things to try. I got the steak wife got ribs and daughter well she got a burger and fries. Appetizer we got meat patties and crab bits. So yes I recommend this place with 5 stars.
