We were looking for breakfast and came across this diner in the area. I'm a bit of a diner snob (diners in the South just can't be beat), so this is what I thought: Hashbrowns: At first I was excited that they seemed extra crispy, but they were actually a bit overdone and dry, which I rarely have found in a hashbrown. I guess I prefer them dry to soggy though. Grits: These were average; they're made with water so not creamy kind, which I expected. Honestly, it was nothing to write home about, but still my favorite item of the day when paired with ham. Coffee: This is just plain diner coffee; you know, that sub par, slightly watered down thing that perks your soul after the fourth cup? Ham: This was also nothing to write home about, but they gave a pretty big portion, which I appreciated. Chicken fried steak: This was my least favorite as it was too oily and the texture of meat was mushy to me. Really reminded me of a warm soggy sock. Beef hash: This was a close least favorite as it was also too mushy and looked remarkably like cat vomit; we sent it back to have them cook it more, but still wasn't very crispy and I couldn't bring myself to eat it. I didn't try french toast but it was quite small for the price you pay. My family thought they were okay. Overall, it's not somewhere I'd come again, but I have some edible options in case I have to. Quick service, friendly staff. The unfortunate part was the food and cost. :( The gravy in the biscuits & gravy tasted just... kind of weird? Like under seasoned or even a little sweet which was strange, and it barely had any sausage bits in it which was disappointing. The bacon did taste good but $6 for four slices is kind of insane. They also need to update their website pricing because the only reason I tried this place out was for the $10 biscuits & gravy + $2 for 2 eggs, listed on the website. I paid $14 for that instead of $12 - sure, $2 seems negligible, but the prices should be updated regardless so people know what they'll be paying if they check ahead. Hopefully their other dishes are better but the biscuits and gravy and expensive bacon is a no for me next time. read more

Then the coup de grace. $21.26 for two eggs, hash browns, ham, small wheat toast. Jam and jelly containers tasted like they've been there long time. Service was good. Ambiance: classic greasy spoon. I eat at Pelton Cafe often with friends and family. The staff are always very friendly. Super accommodating. The restaurant is clean. Some mornings there's a line and you have to sign in on a piece of paper. Never had to wait too long. They're great at refilling your coffee. read more

Stopped by for the first time to do some work and eat. I ordered food and champagne, and everything tasted great. However, the service made me feel rushed. Before I even finished my food and drink, the check was dropped off and I was asked if I wanted a box. I decided to order another drink anyway, but before I could finish that, the check was brought again. At that point, I just paid and didn't bother ordering anything else. However, they took our order after 3 parties orders were taken (these parties were seated after us) and we kept letting the staff know we were ready to place our order. So we felt extremely ignored. Waited for someone to take our order for 20minutes. Finally placed our orders and 40 minutes later our food still hadn't arrived. At no point did anyone check in with us . Then when a gal finally walked by, I asked if I could get the check for just our coffees because we'd been waiting for an hour. Our waitress comes back to ask if we wanted the check for our coffees. We Paid $9 and change just for black coffee. At no point did anyone even apologize or try to explain a delay. Just ignored us as they had for the last hour. read more

My son in law took me here for a Mothers Day breakfast. It was my first time there. They seated all 6 of us quickly. I had the French toast it was your standard French toast. No complaints. The egg was cooked to my request of over medium. I did enjoy my sausage links. They were salty and juicy. The wait staff was attentive and helpful. Both my grandsons loved the pancakes. Pendleton café has been a staple of this classic downtown San Leandro for many years It is a daytime breakfast lunch café and closes about 4pm. I've been here over the years and I had some good and bad times and I recently visited after the Covid reopening Many of the downtown San Leandro restaurants are now open as of July 2021. The day I visited it wasn't a great experience. I ordered a simple a fish fried sandwich, it wasn't the lunch hour so it wasn't crowded but the service folks lost my order ticket I noticed after 25 minutes to a half hour later I still hadn't received my meal and all the other customers who ordered after me had received their meals. I finally asked the staff to please at least serve me my salad. This is when they discovered my order was never sent to to the cook. After I pointed out my meal was never served - I got the feel from the staff that it was somehow my fault for not pointing it out. They could not find my ticket - but after 50 min I finally did get my meal - a basic fish sandwich with a very under cooked batter. I took the sandwich apart and just at the doughy fish filet - with little favor. I was never asked to have my drink refilled - or to be compensated since the meal was 40 min late. Easy parking in the P center lot and - the shopping center has many other restaurants to visit. Customer service at this diner has disappeared. If you want to support a mom and pop diner I suggest Nicks and Cozy Kitchen about a mile from the Pelton. read more

Came with some friend who used to live around the corner and come here , once a week. They raved about the Hummbaby breakfast. When you walk in, you're welcomed with the sound of a creaky door which only added to the whimsical and vintage decor. It has an old time feel to it, for sure. Very nostalgic, which I can see why people like coming here. I wish I had time to walk around and check out all the trinkets and doodads. Next time I will for sure! So for food, I had the Green Chilequiles and it was fantastic. The tortilla bits were crispy, and the tomatillo sauce was tangy and flavorful. My eggs came out with the white runny, for over medium, which I don't care for. I just asked for them to microwave it for a bit, and that did the trick. I'm really not hard to please when it comes to food...(unfortunately for my waistline ) . Our server was really nice and so was the other staff. Friends had the Hummbaby and the French Dip. Went there on a Saturday, we were lucky to find parking as it can be rather difficult in that shopping center. We sat at the bar because there were no tables available. This place has really gone downhill since the change in ownership. It used to be a neighborhood spot with a daily breakfast bunch that sat at the counter - there is no counter and no community feel to it. No regulars to greet you and share their wisdom with the next generation or just provide some comfort familiarity. Everything is hurried and the food is BLAND. So disappointing compared to past quality. Service is sad; seeming like workers aren't treated well? Questions about the menu aren't welcome. Met the owner. She is RUDE and brusque. No customer service skills or basic social skills. A waiter seemed to look at me pleadingly like - don't bother ! While talking to her about my sons food allergies and therefore questions about the menu the waitress and the menu couldn't answer. She was less than helpful or even rational. I say with sadness for the history of this spot -avoid! Someone please take over ownership- wouldn't be hard to fix the issues there and bring back its greatness!!! read more

Had a country feel to the atmosphere. Food came and it was mediocre. My whole dish was cold ( I order the "hmmm baby" which is eggs cheese and sausage patty on toast with gravy on top , house potatoes on the side ) nothing was warm absolutely nothing . Disappointed , I asked for a box to go .... and as I'm packing up my dish I see a long red hair in my house potatoes . Eww ! If I hadn't of started packing my food I could of ate that !!! I showed them and told them I'd like my refund or a discount . They first offered me water or a soda to compensate, what the heck?! A cup of water isn't the equivalent of what I just paid for and I'm not quite sure offering me more food after my food came with hair in it was a good idea . So I asked to speak to the manager and she said there was nothing she can do to refund or discount me since we paid with card , so I pretty much paid for hair in my food . Never coming here again . This was the first time since the pandemic and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that customer service has improved significantly and the quality of food is better than I remember. I ordered an egg white omelete, but when it came, it was yellowish, nothing white about it.The guy said it was egg white, but I could tell later it was not.I can not eat eggs, it upsets my stomach for the whole day, and that was what happened,unfortunately. We really wanted to try Pelton Cafe a while ago whenever we were in Downtown SL, but they were usually closed for the day....so we finally ordered delivery during COVID-19. If you're looking for a restaurant that has solid breakfast and lunch options at affordable prices and a quick turnaround time, this is your place. We have ordered a few times and tried their Breakfast Croissant Sandwich, French Toast (Regular and Cinnamon Raisin; I preferred Regular without powdered sugar), Ham and Eggs, Chicken Tenders, and Chicken Sandwich. All were satisfying and as expected. I love that you can make special requests for egg whites (at an additional cost) for almost any of their breakfast dishes. They also pay close attention to any allergies or requests you mention in the notes as well. A kind handwritten "thank you" was on the bag with the plastic ware, condiments, etc. Portions were not small or large, but good for the price and filling. We loved this place & we live walking distance! I'd had this place bookmarked since we moved. We hardly eat breakfast out but we had business to get done early in the morning so we popped in. They literally have everything flowing perfectly on a busy Saturday morning. We were sat as soon as we walked in, everyone checked on us. Every plate that went by looked so good. I was really hoping this place would be good... I read the reviews and they had some really good ones. So I went ahead and ordered me a French Dip Sandwich & Au Jus with a side of broccoli cheddar soup and orange juice to go. They forgot my orange juice for starters. The steak in the sandwich was tasteless and dry also too hard arou the edges, the au jus sauce was tasteless. The broccoli cheddar soup was extremely watery. No way would a restaurant make this. This tells me they added water to stretch it out and as I'm aware some restaurants do this to save money, this even tastes watered down. This is sad, especially given their prices. read more

Fantastic little local breakfast spot in San Leandro. So happy we found this place as they do authentic breakfast, great service and a down home kitschy vibe in an awesome package. The "new" owners have been there for 14 years, so you know it's a local favorite. And the decor looks like my grandma's basement. So good. Had the most perfect pancakes with eggs over medium. Wonderful and filling. The omelets looked awesome and hash browns were just like you like them. French toast was there... and then gone.
