Awesome flavorful food!! The rotis and satay skewers are a MUST to start off the meal. The roti is so airy and the curry so flavorful. The beef skewers are the most tender skewers I've had yet, and pair extra nicely with the peanut sauce. The hainannese chicken is a large portion, but be careful with small bone pieces due! I enjoyed the mee Siam as well, but it was a little on the saltier side. Even then, the group thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we left with all empty dishes. read more

I don't know how I went so long in Boston without knowing there was a Penang!!! I grew up going to a Penang with my family in NJ often and it was one of our favorite restaurants. My go-to here is Roti Canai to start (pro-tip: keep the leftover curry after you finish the roti and if you want ask for a bowl of rice to pair it with - extra meal with your starter!). And also my favorite here is the Spicy Thai Chicken which is just a spicy version of the Hainanese Chicken. When I want a little kick and spice (always do pretty much), I go for the Spicy Thai Chicken and when I'm just all about savory, I opt for the Hainanese Chicken. The staff is very attentive and checked in on us to refill water and clear plates often even though the restaurant was very busy. I saw people here catching up with friends, on dates, eating with family, so it really seems to fit most occasions. In terms of rating what I tried, Hainannese Chicken: I was really surprised by the portion size of the half chicken, but wasn't surprised by how fast it disappeared. Despite my initial worry about the pool of soy sauce it came in, the soy sauce wasn't actually very salty. It complimented the chicken well, and I think that maybe we should've gone for the full chicken. The chicken was not at all dry, and I think if you want leftovers of anything, this would keep very well. Spareribs Malaysian Style: I believe there's something satisfyingly primal about having the opportunity to eat tasty meat off bones, so I personally enjoyed this dish a lot. It was also seasoned well. I will warn that since it is fried spareribs, there is some amount of chewing involved, but it's not exactly chewy. Vegetable Casserole: Vegetables cooked in a savory white sauce. We got this dish mostly because my friend wanted to make sure we ate some vegetables, but I ended up being glad that we got it. The tofu in it is amazingly soft on the inside, but still has texture on the outside from the frying, and so it was absolutely delicious piping hot. The vegetables weren't mushy, except the mushrooms that kind of always end up mushy in anything, and the crisp crunch was a welcome addition to the meal. Mango Shrimp: Not exactly my favorite. I will cut it some slack because shrimp isn't my first choice of meat. However, it didn't seem like there was much shrimp in this dish. Mostly mango. And although the mango in the sweet sauce was tasty and plentiful, the whole dish was overall underwhelming because it was the same sweet flavor and soft texture again and again with the mango. I would recommend trying something else on the menu. Coconut Rice: The large bowl is massive and probably too much for three people. We barely finished half of it and took the rest home. It had a noticeably salty hint to it, so salt-haters beware. I personally think the rice is a must-have to pair with the other dishes. read more

Was looking forward to eating here today as I had been there before and was taking my son out for lunch. Dishes come out as they are prepared. Our appetizers came out, then my son's meal. Waitress never came back to check on us. Son finished- no meal for me. Busboy came by to ask if my son wanted a to go box. I told him my meal never came out. Delicious food. Incredibly fast service- our meal arrived about five minutes after ordering. Was served with red solo cups and plastic utensils though which was a bit odd- probably just a dish washing issue in the back. This place was alright. I am a huge fan of Hainanese chicken and generally enjoy it, but this one was disappointing. The chicken came out very quickly after ordering, but it was cold and had almost no flavor on its own. Chicken stock rice was great and somewhat made up for the lack of flavor in the chicken itself. The Hokkien Char Mee was underwhelming as well. Lacked flavor and the sauce was very watery. Overall an okay place to eat. YUM came here after watching a youtube video of Boston chinatown food tour. Got the Nasi Lemak which is comes with coconut rice served with chili anchovy curry chicken and hard boiled eggs. This was so yummy and so so flavorful!!! Different flavors that all went together very well. I absolutely loved the coconut rice omg it was delicious and so subtle with the coconut flavor. Probably my favorite thing actually. I also loved the curry chicken, the sauce was deep and rich and was delicious with the coconut rice. I normally like the mee siam, Singapore rice noodle, chow foon noodle, Curry chicken, and Tom Yum soup. I was looking up and down on Yelp this weekend to find a place in Boston with Singapore chilly crab. This came up first in the search. The authentic soup should be cooked with shrimp head and shell with some pork ribs ( not too much) and sambal. Their version is very different. More like pork ribs soup. I treated myself to a big lunch here. Got the roti canai (must try!!), beef chow fun, and bubor chacha (a yummy coconut milk dessert with chunks of sweet potato, taro, and tapioca pearls). The flavors were all spot on! The beef chow fun was a huge portion and I took half of it home. The bubor chacha came out looking a little bit messy (it was spilling over the sides of the bowl) but tasted heavenly. I thought it was overall a good deal: $20 for all three dishes. The service was good too - the waitress checked in several times, there was free hot tea, and they boxed up my leftovers nicely. The prices are pretty cheap so this is a great affordable option if you're craving something hearty and filling, but definitely not the best tasting food or the fastest service. The Hainanese Chicken was disappointingly tough. I am used to the poached chicken from my typical hainan chicken orders to be soft, tender, and flavorful, so I was sad that the chicken here required a lot of work and chew to eat. The "flavored" rice was pretty average. I did enjoy how cheap the food here was (every noodle/rice dish with meat and veggies is under $10) but the service left much to be desired. We waited for quite a while to get water, food, and for the check to come out when we were done. My boyfriend (Malaysian) & I (Indonesian) ordered Roti Telur. Both of us are familiar with how Roti Telur should be cooked & how it should taste like since we lived in Malaysia for more than 10 years before moving to the states. The Roti Telur straight up was a disappointment. First, there was very little egg, and too much onions. The onions were falling off from the roti itself and it was unappetizing. It felt like eating roti with a side of onions. Not to mention that the curry taste bland too. Besides that, the service was at the bare minimum and I personally would tip about 12% for courtesy. However, it made us uncomfortable as the server came back to us and insisted for a tip of 15%. Due to these experiences, we are not coming back and we dot not recommend dining in here. It has been probably close to 10 years since I was last at Penang and when I returned this past weekend, I was blown away at how good everything was. We were seated shortly after arriving on Sunday afternoon - it was around 1 pm and much to our surprise there was not a wait. The server was extremely courteous and quite friendly for being in the Chinatown area. We tried the roti canai which was a nice mix of flaky and chewy. The coconut curry dip that comes with it also pairs really nicely with rice. We also had the satay chicken which we found to be on the sweeter side - note that the sauce that it comes with the extremely sweet. Regardless, the chicken was well cooked and moist. We also had the green beans with shrimp paste which were the star of the show. The green beans were cooked to perfection and maintained a nice crisp bite without feeling overcooked. There was also a healthy amount of shrimp included in the dish. Our last dish was the Cantonese Chow Fun which is a gravy noodle dish that comes with seafood and vegetables. We were really impressed with this dish as it was the perfect level of savory while maintaining a light feel. Would highly recommend this dish. read more

My party and I had called in advance to try and make reservations for 7pm on a Friday evening. Unfortunately, they don't take reservations but also reassured us that they always had tables unoccupied in the restaurant. Nonetheless, 3 of the members who arrived on time had to wait about 10min for a table in the back as it was definitely a full house during peak dinner time. I've noticed that staff were kept busy, and they definitely had to be flagged down from time to time to order and to ask for the bill. They were very patient, friendly, and professional so we had no issues with this. The noise level does pick up, so be prepared to shout across the table as well from time to time. Also, beware that the plates and cups set up for everyone at tables are plastic (yep, red solo cups everywhere)... clearly environmental consciousness is not Penang's priority. **THE FOOD: I've never had Malaysian food so I can't speak to the authenticity of it... but all of our orders were very tasty (even when we ordered at 8pm)! We ordered the Roti Telur (sp?) as a shared appetizer & it lived up to everyone's hype on Yelp. Has a unique taste of potatoes (I think) and onion on thin roti, but definitely avoid if you're not an onion fan because the slightly cooked raw onion taste did remain. For my main I ordered the Mee Siam, which is a sort of fried noodles with shrimp, tofu, and bean sprouts and it wa super filling (easily shared with 3 ppl) + had a nice spice to it. The portions were plenty big for me as well. My friend got the chicken feet and mushroom soup, which we felt was a bit on the bland side in that the soup didn't have much depth to it. It was good, but nothing too special. The chicken feet were very bony as well. The thai iced tea was SO GOOD-- it was the perfect refreshing drink to the spiciness that started building from the Mee Siam. I wasn't sure if they offered bubbles/boba but if they do, I'll get it with the iced tea next time for sure. Overall, I was absolutely full by the time we were finished with our meal and could've easily had leftovers if we had chosen not to share each other's orders. The pictures don't do the food justice when it comes to the portion size; trust me, they're big. I'm so glad I discovered this location with great vibes and good, filling food. This was our first Malaysian food experience. The place is very inviting with original decorations. We ordered a couple a dishes - noodles with beef (flat noodles in a brown sauce very similar to a Thai noodle dish (Pad-See-Uh - I know it is mispell), Chicken Ginger (love the slices of ginger) very well prepared, and Pork Dumplings. As an appetizer, we tried the Roti with curry chicken - obviously an indian influence dish. Overall, the food was very good.
