We ordered a couple a dishes - noodles with beef (flat noodles in a brown sauce very similar to a Thai noodle dish (Pad-See-Uh - I know it is mispell), Chicken Ginger (love the slices of ginger) very well prepared, and Pork Dumplings. As an appetizer, we tried the Roti with curry chicken - obviously an indian influence dish. Overall, the food was very good. The hainan chicken rice was probably my favorite, and it's a must if you come here. The rice was well flavored in chicken broth, and it comes in a very generous portion. Since moving to the Boston area for work in 2014, this marks only my second time dining at this location and 3rd overall for all locations. It certainly lacked that ooomph that made me want to come back. The most recent visit didn't do too much to convince me otherwise either. It is okay and as the only Malaysian restaurant I can think of in the area, it doesn't necessarily make me want to run back any time soon either. Stand outs - Pineapple fried rice, Roti Telur, Kang Kang Belecan, some peanut filled dessert Medicore - Roti canai, Hainan chicken, seafood combination caserole The fried rice looks to be the more popular product with many tables ordering it. It has fresh chunks of pineapple that are slightly acidic and softened up from the stir fry. The Roti was also a thicker pancake that is served with the same curry as the canai. Flavor was awesome and the curry compliments the roti well. The Kang Kang is a chinese watercress with a shrimp paste sauce (Chinese, viet influence) that is awesome, probably my favorite dish. The Roti canai was pretty disappointing as we ordered two and one of them seemed really chewy and room temp. The other one was nice and crisp and warm to the touch as we tear it apart to dip into the curry. The Hainan chicken also seems to be a popular item but it honestly lacked real flavor. It sits on a plate of soy based sauce but the chicken itself was not too flavorful compared to other whole chicken entrees in the area (Wing's Kitchen). All in all, it's not entirely bad but it's not all great either. There are select dishes that stand out on its own but the meal taken as a whole does not make me want to keep coming back. read more

For Malaysian food in Boston this is one of my go to's. Located in the heart of Chinatown, this place has tons of tasty dishes for reasonable prices. Roti is always tasty and Haianese chicken is always a must. Other dishes I like include the beef rendang, mango chicken, shrimp with ladies fingers Malaysian style, and the crispy golden fried squid. Oh - and also CHICKEN RICE. God I could just eat bowls of this alone. Wish I could make chicken rice like they do. The coconut rice here is pretty good too. Very good roti and Nasi Goreng. Service was amazing. The waitress spoke my native language which was cool to hear.

The dine-in experience was great! Temperatures were checked upon arriving, menus were via QR code, plates and utensils were wrapped and disposable, and the service was great. The waitress was very attentive and helpful (for the satay appetizer we couldn't decide between beef and chicken so she gave us half and half) and the food came out very fast. I got the Chow kueh teow which was delicious and quite a large portion for only $9.75! My partner got the beef rendang rice dish and it was equally delicious and filling for the excellent price of $9.50. I have to say this is one of my favorite spots in Boston, mainly because of the Roti Canai. The indian pancake paired with the curry sauce is honestly to die for. I would just order two of these for a meal if anything. But there are so many other good dishes. For example, this time the pineapple fried rice was bomb! So flavorful and delicious. Lunch with a work colleague. This is a nice restaurant with a theme going on. It's decorated and laid out nicely, with tables that are not on top of each other. I chose the short ribs for lunch and it was interesting. Super hot from the fryer, the ribs were decently meaty and only a little bit of gristle. Tasty flavor and the tangy dipping sauce they came with was nice. I would like to return to Penang with more than a couple of people. I think it's time for another update, went from 2008 to 2014 to now 2017! I went back twice this week, with just 4 days in between! I blame it on the roti canai craving!!!! Service has improved since 2014 so that's good. If they are busy you will just have to wave SOMEONE down. During dinnertime on the weekends it's packed and you will have to wait, if you have a big party I recommend calling in ahead to put a reservation down. Lunch during the weekedays is not as crazy, we came at 11:30 and it was slowly filling up. There wouldn't be a severe wait though if you came during lunchtime. Again, I tried the pad thai and didn't really care for the taste but my mom liked it... as always we got the haianese chicken. You can get a half chicken for under 13$ and then add rice to it for either about $3 for a small or $8 for a large and when they say large, they mean it! I have loads of rice for leftovers! You can also just get a entree chicken rice which has a good amount of chicken and a bowl of rice for under $8. I also tried the curry me and it's good if you are taking a few sips but I wouldn't be able to eat the whole bowl of noodle, it's very generously filled with noodles of 2 kinds! Rice noodles and then a rounded thick one that I didn't care for. I'm sort of a fan..if I keep ordering just the pancake and the rice... but I think I may have to venture out and eat the pineapple fried rice one day. Can I just say that the Roti Canai here is bomb-- SO good that my friends and I each got our own individual orders (trust me, best decision ever). Other than that, the dishes are pretty average. My friends and I ordered the pineapple fried rice, spare ribs and fried curry chicken... Not bad but don't expect amazing food either! Overall, I think this place is good. I am surprised to see that the ratings are below a 4 for Penang because I LOVE this spot. I grew up in Singapore and am given the best nostalgia trip when I am able to eat at Penang. Not only is their food good, their portions are huge (definitely more when you're dining in vs. delivery), and incredibly affordable. 2 of my old college friends and I came here for a late lunch. The restaurant is a beautiful space! High ceilings, airy, wood details. However, the food left much more to be desired. We shared the roti and a stuffed fried bean curd appetizer, and my friend who's vegetarian got a Buddha bowl. Me and my non vegetarian friend shared hokkien char mee and chow kuey teow. The roti was delicious but I wish they gave us more of the roti (we had leftover curry). The bean curd appetizer was okay. Not as good as how my grandma makes it but it's decent. Overall, I think the appetizers were much better than the entrées. The hokkien char mee is not authentic and seems Americanized. It's tasty but overly salty and the texture of the noodles is off and is soggy. Not sure if it's because of the soupy sauce, but it feels like the noodles have been sitting in the soupy sauce for too long, hence degrading the texture. I've had lots of char mee and it's not supposed to be soggy. I brought leftovers home and my mom and grandma agreed that it was Americanized and way too greasy. The kuey teow was slightly better than the mee but also had an off texture. I've had a lot of Malaysian food in NYC and this place was honestly disappointing especially at the price point (it costed way more than I expected!). The place is pretty big but does fill up during peak times. We ordered the nasi lamek dish, seafood taro nest and curry chicken roti. For food, we had the steamed sea bass, salted fish fried rice, char kway teow, a curry soup with tofu and pork, morning glory, hainanese chicken, and the roti. Grabbed dinner here with some friends on a Saturday night (6pmish). No line when we arrived but definitely built up by 7pm so be warned that it can fill up with little warning! We chose to go for a family style route to try a little bit of everything. We started off with the homemade Roti Canai which is an Indian pancake that comes with a side of curry dipping sauce. The sauce itself was very savory (UMAMIIII) and mixed very well with the roti. Rumor has it they were "out of stock" for a while due to a change in chefs soooo while it was quite tasty I guess it used to be better? The next 5 dishes we got were the watercress with preserved bean curd paste, fried pearl noodles, beef casserole, mee siam, and a third noodle dish that I can't recall (claypot something). The highlight for sure was the mee siam which is a slightly spicy noodle dish with chicken. I would definitely order this and the roti again in a heart beat. The watercress was also tasty but nothing super special. The beef casserole was also tender but the portion was a tad on the smallish size. I ordered the Chow Kueh Teow for pick up via DoorDash and when I arrived, my order wasn't made. I watched about maybe 10 minutes for my order to be made. This was the first time I've ever had Malaysian food and I was really hoping that I would like it. Unfortunately, the noodles weren't that flavorful. It was pretty bland. However, there was a lot of protein which I appreciated, but regardless it was still bland in taste. One of my favorite go to places in Chinatown since I was in middle school. I recommend the roti canai for an appetizer. The small portion of chicken curry for dipping is perfect to start off the meal. The roti is a good mix of crispy and chewy at the time. It is slightly sweet. For noodle, I recommend the me siam. Definitely squeeze some lime on it and mix it up. This is a slightly sweet stir fry rice vermicelli noodle with shrimp, egg, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts and other ingredients. You won't get it at any other restaurant so not much to compare it to. It's a ver unique noodle dish. For entrees you can eat with rice, I recommend the mango chicken or mango shrimp. The thick sweet mango sauce is not too sweet, with the right amount of sour to it. Or you can order the special squid in bamboo leaf with a black sweet sauce. This dish, however, has a slight spicy kick. Both goes well with side order of white rice. Also order their Hainanese chicken. This is steamed chicken with bone in served in a light soy sauce. For dessert, I highly recommend the ABC. You rally can't get anything like it anywhere. Its similar to shaved ice but with a surprising array of ingredients in it. By surprising, I mean corn. I have been hearing good things about this place from fellow Yelpers and from my co-workers. I was not disappointed. Ever since my trip to Southeast-Asia, I have been looking for some good Malaysian food, and this place did the trick in satisfying that need.t I already had a good feeling when I walked in, and the place was busy with most of the seats occupied with other customers, especially when thought I was coming in early to beat the dinner rush. The décor is very clean and I personally like the bamboo themed hut they have throughout the restaurant, with a slightly opened kitchen, where you can see and hear the rhythmic clanging of the wok, as the cooks fire off each dish, only adds more to the experience to your meal. I ordered the Roti, Oyster Pancake, Pineapple Fried Rice, Half a Hainan chicken and Kang Kung Belacan (Spicy Chinese Watercress with a Malaysian spicy shrimp paste) and it was all very good. I don't know what they put in the curry that is served with the Roti, but I'm supper addicted; I could eat a huge bowl of just that curry. The Oyster Omelet is loaded with oysters and every bite was delicious, there have been other places where I order this, and you can tell that they use the small canned oysters. This place however, does not use small oysters; these are nice and big and do not have the taste of something that has been stuffed into a tin can. The servers were very attentive and professional, they consistently checked on our table, making sure out glasses were full and seeing how we were enjoying our meal. I noticed that all staff are very fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, so there is no worries in communication with anyone. I came here with a group of friends for Sunday lunch, and I'm so glad I did! The food: Feels like a mix of Chinese and Thai food. We got the roti canai, Hainanese chicken, fried squid, beef chow fun, amongst others. Those were the most memorable. The roti canai dip is good to keep for the rice. I wish the portion was bigger, but it is an appetizer. Hainanese chicken came with spicy sauce and soaked in the regular sauce. Beef chow fun was cooked very tender -- just how I like it. Service: Friendly, our water glasses were kept filled. Food came relatively quickly. The wait: We did not have a reservation. Our group of 10 was seated within 5-10 min for Sunday lunch. Maybe it's because it was my first time trying some of these Malaysian dishes (like the Roti Canai and the Beef Rendang), but I would definitely consider coming back in the future My friends and I got four dishes to share: Hainanese Chicken - to be honest, I've had this type of chicken before, and I know that it's not really my thing. As much as crave this kind of food, Penang's food never fails to disappoint me every time I give them another shot. I ordered the Nasi Lemak (coconut rice) and it was bad. The rice was not fragrant, the anchovy onion side was obviously just taken out of the fridge and plopped on the plate as it was frigid cold, the chicken was dry, and most importantly it didn't come with sambal chili paste! I asked the server for some chili and he gave me a watery, sourish chili sauce akin to the one for chicken rice. My experience at Penang each time has been amazing. They serve up quality food with warm customer service. They're always packed when I get there so you might be expected to wait. My favorite appetizer is always the roti canai-I love the light doughy roti that's served with a side of dipping curry. In terms of the entree, you can't go wrong with their spicy hainaneese chicken (not really that spicy imo) served with their addicting house made sauce. This dish tastes even better with their chicken flavored rice . I also love to eat this with any of their veggie dish!
