Well this restaurant has been a staple here in Calhoun for over 30 years. It is always great to support a local owned place. The staff was very friendly and service wa great, I had a chicken over rice lunch , I did ask for no celery but was informed the vegetables are pre mixed . I also asked about if they did there own potsticker or egg rolls but no they buy SYSCO. Probably the veg mix is from there too. BUT the lunch was very goo and the Hot and Sour soup was fantastic !!!! The building is plain and unassuming and might be missed if not for the roadside sign. The entrance is along the side and not the door facing the main road. There was a sizable dining room and I was immediately greeted and seated on this summer weekday for dinner. Service was attentive and friendly and refills were prompt. I ordered the Won Ton soup and it was tasty. For my entree I selected the Beef with Szechuan Sauce. The spiciness wasn't high, but sauce had a strong sour flavor that wasn't enjoyable. Wow so this place has good food and I was in the area and decided to drop on in for a quick lunch special. I have never paid more than 10$ with tip. I figured hey it might be 12$ with tip given the cost of everything but boy was I wrong! 16.57 for the lunch special BEFORE the tip! Food is good but not that good! It was okay, but nothing special. I thought being an eat-in place was a good sign, but the food was just basic buffet type stuff. The chicken (sesame chicken) was overcooked and tough, and the rice was overcooked and hard around the edges. Rude and hateful people. My husband when in at 7 pm to order an egg drop soup to go waited for about 15 minutes no one even looked at him. He even called while he was standing there waiting. No one answered the phone finally at 7:20 pm, 10 minutes before they closed a woman came up to him to tell him they were closed. Not the kinda service you want to experience your first time there. This place is not open much so I haven't been here in many many years. The sesame chicken was flavored good just lacks sauce. The general Tso chicken was too salty I ate two pieces and was done. We had been told about this place and how good the food was. The menu is varied and prices were reasonable. The Mongolian Beef was fair. My sweet and sour shrimp was better than average. The staff was friendly and seemed sincere. Service was prompt, there weren't a lot of customers. The atmosphere wasn't what we expected. Perhaps it had been a long day. Very low frills(if any), but that's okay, you don't eat the frills, do you? 2. Fast to be seated, despite being busy. 3. Fast to order with a small(ish) but sufficient lunch menu which I believe it's the way it should be. You're not overwhelmed with 100's of choices. 4. Fast to table. 5. Excellent hot and sour soup. 6. The owners are great people who know you well and always make sure you have a great experience every time. My favorite dish is the sesame seed chicken, the chicken has this kind of soft crisp taste and it is finished in a sweet and sour type sauce that I have never seen at any other location. At one time, I ate at Peng's regularly, but today was the first time I have been back there in 15 years. It was a VERY disappointing experience. I ordered their Sesame Chicken from the lunch menu, and chose the hot and sour soup to go along with it. The hot and sour soup tasted terrible, and literally smelled like someone had washed their sweaty gym socks in it. I usually devour every last drop of hot and sour soup, and turn up the bowl to drink the last bit. I left over half of the soup in the minuscule bowl. When the sesame chicken came out, it had chunks of some unidentifiable meat, that appeared to have been painted with red tempera paint and allowed to dry, then sprinkled with sesame seeds. I managed to cut one of the pieces in half with my fork and put it in my mouth, but it was dry and leathery, and honestly smelled spoiled. The egg roll was OK... tasted like the kind you buy from the frozen foods section in the supermarket. If this is the norm for their food now, I will NOT be returning in the future. I got up and paid for my food, and left it in plain sight, nearly untouched. The server looked at it, but did not question me... merely took my payment for the meal. It must be a normal occurrence for people to get up and leave after only eating one bite of their lunch there. read more

I ate there today and could not eat the Kung Poa Chicken. It had a very bad taste I could not place. My boyfriend smelled it and said it smelled like ammonia. I just ate half of my boyfriends meal, because noone would help us. The owner was at the register and very rude. She treated me like I was lying. The only thing she said to me was we have been cooking for 14 years. You ate the egg roll and soup right! I told her I have been eating my whole life and something is wrong with that chicken. She does not care if her food is bad be careful... But she was at that register to charge me for my egg roll and soup(which was the same price as the meal apparently). I will not be back. For years now, I've been strangely enchanted with Peng's. Every time I visit home, I MUST go there. I always order hot tea and the shrimp imperial with wonton soup, forgoing the egg roll for extra rice. Even when the server rarely swings by the table, I feel like I'm well taken care of.
