Visited Shula's for the first time. It is a very nice restaurant specializing in fresh seafood. It's a nice place for a date night, birthday or anniversary. Service was excellent. Food came out at just the right pace between courses. Ambience was only "ok"... I did notice that things looked a bit worn. And one thing that bothered me was that there were ceiling tiles that were badly water stained and sagging... nothing active, but it was very unsightly. Given that they are very easy to replace, leaving them there just made the place feel less "special evening" ambience to more like "a diner" which is a shame for a place i expected to be more classy. As for the food we had lots of positives to say. We tried the crab bisque appetizer which was thick and creamy with just the right amount of seasoning and crab meat. The portion for a first course was generous. We also got the steamed mussels in a white wine and garlic sauce. The mussels were cooked perfectly. They were plump, tender and flavorful the sauce was delicious. Be sure to ask for extra bread to soak up some of the broth and juices. The side salads were likewise generous portions, fresh and crisp. Very happy! The main courses come with just one side. I got the fried seafood platter with hushpuppies and my wife got the stuffed flounder with onion rings. The fried platter came with flounder, shrimp and oysters, with tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. All were coated in a lightly seasoned breading that was crisp. Not overly thick. The hushpuppies, which other reviewers said were outstanding, I found to be on the sweet side. Crisp, yes, but overall just ok...I prefer mine more savory than sweet. The stuffed flounder was also very well done. Delicious. The flounder was cooked just right. Flaky and moist. The onion rings were thick cut, beer batter dipped. They were hot and crisp and the portion like everything else here was generous. In the end we did need a box to bring some of our entrees home. We left very satisfied. So I was pretty satisfied with the food and the service. Now if they could just do something to get the dining room as upscale as the food and service this would be an outstanding dining experience... thus only four stars instead of five. read more

We're in from Lancaster, Pa., and were looking for a place with seafood. The food was delicious. The service was cheery. The ambiance was quiet and nice. First thing, the restaurant is around the back, there are no signs to direct you there. Go around the back and upstairs. This was a first time for us and we are already thinking about when we will return. Melissa was absolutely amazing, courteous, and was a sheer delight to interact with throughout dinner. The "cup" of cream of crab soup was probably the best I've had with lots of crab meat. And that was a huge portion too! Oysters Rockefeller, filet, crab cake, and scampi were so delicious and cooked to perfection! This is a cute restaurant, easy to find, and casual...all great in my opinion. We went for Valentine's Day not realizing the menu was limited. The seared ahi tuna came highly recommended so I'm sad I wasn't able to try it but we should have called ahead to ask. Instead, we started with the Calamari which was lightly breaded and crunchy, the caesar salad was sub par (the dressing felt like it needed something), the chicken alfredo was near perfect, and the stuffed flounder was good but very very rich. It felt like it needed something to break up the heaviness so I used a lemon from the calamari to squeeze over it, then it was perfection. Schulas was hard to find. The name of the restaurant was on the front of the building but the restaurant was actually on the back side of the building. There were no signs to indicate the location. We parked in front and had to walk all the way around. Keep that in mind if you have trouble walking. Ruthie, our server, was outstanding--friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. She answered our questions and made suggestions. The lunch scallops were delicious but the portion was very small. It looked like they had been cut horizontally to make more pieces. The fried oysters were very disappointing. They did not taste fresh. They were flat and the breading was heavy and somewhat greasy. The sweet potato fries and steak fries were tasty. Service was extremely slow. Had fried calamari which was greasy, tough, overcooked and flavorless. Waited forever for entree's....but was pleasantly surprised when they finally arrived hot. Hubs had stuffed flounder which was covered in a tasty crab sauce but the stuffing lacked flavor as well as crab. I had broiled scallops which were somewhat flavorful but lacked the traditional broil marks but never the less were tender. I went to Shula's for lunch today with 12 friends. The service was very slow. The food was good. The ambiance is fine. I requested some of their delicious bread and butter, but it was never brought to me. I was shocked when my salad with large crab cake, price listed as "market" cost $50! That's ridiculously expensive for what I ordered! Also, they added a 20% tip to my bill due to our large party, adding another $10 for a $60 lunch. This is way too expensive for the slow service and what I ate. There are too many good restaurants in Hagerstown to ever go back to Shula's. read more

I am so glad Yelp recommended this place on the way from DC to Pittsburgh. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Mom ordered the oysters. They were fantastic! I ordered the cream of crab. Had a gift card from 2023. Yes, we should have used it earlier, but due to circumstances, never did. There was no expiration date on it, so assumed we could still use it, as we have the card and the receipt. Because they changed ownership in the past 2 years or so, the new owners failed to collect the money for the old gift cards, and even though they did honor them for some time, now they won't. So we are out the $100, and I guess lesson learned is don't buy gift cards from restaurants that are a single location. read more

This place has delicious salmon. I asked the waitress what she recommended, and I was not disappointed. The service at this place was on point. We decided to stop in at the last minute on a Saturday night. They did not disappoint. The food was good. The inside of the restaurant was older but was clean. The atmosphere here is kind of diner vibes. Not Many people here but it is probably still a little early for dinner. Definitely a family atmosphere. To me it was a bit chilly inside. After about 15 minutes, I noticed people start trickling in. The waitress came over fairly quick which was fine because I already scanned the menu online prior to coming. She was very nice. I didn't have any questions about the menu or anything so I just ordered. Crab & artichoke dip- delicious! A good blend of crab and artichoke. Very good. I definitely prefer my crab dip with the baguette bread it came with instead of chips. I thought the portion was decent. French onion soup - I've had better. I honestly think it's watered down. The cheese is good. The broth taste seasoned, but just water down. Not really a lot of onions either. A little disappointed. Wedge salad- fresh crunchy lettuce, perfect. A little overpowering with the blue cheese but still very good. This restaurant would have gotten five stars had not been for the French onion soup. Great experience! I came in on my birthday, from out of town, and placed a carry out order. Staff was so kind. I really felt cared for. And the other patrons were so warm and encouraging. Also my food was excellent! They do seafood so well. Honestly they do everything well, but I'm always surprised by how good their seafood is. I've eaten here maybe 3 or 4 times before - I have family in the area - and I feel like they take pride in their food and really do their best for every customer. We were told the manager was not available. When I went to the ladies room, there was the manager sitting at the end of the bar. My intention was to let him know there was a price discrepancy. The waitress, Donna, was fantastic! A true professional. It isn't very intimate, but it is relatively quiet and good for a date night. The food was excellent! I had the Chicken Chesapeake and the crab was large lump crab meat in a very tasty cream sauce. My wife had the Marylander which was a crab cake and filet mignon. I ordered 3 meals to go from Schulas, when I got there about 5 min before they said my meal would be ready the the girl at the counter looked surprised when she looked in her book. She excused herself and went to get my meal or so I thought. She came back with the manager and then they told me this contrived story that someone with the exact name as me just picked my order up just minutes ago which I could tell they were lying. So they said they would get my order made again and it would take 15 min. Half an hour later I got my meal. They never apologized or offered a discount on a future purchase, just here you go. We have eaten at Schulas quite often over the years. At times it is very good and other times it can be mediocre. This includes the food and the service. Schulas has a great variety of seafood and their specials are often yummy, but sometimes their crabs are overcooked and other dishes under seasoned. Their bread is phenomenal...usually, but during our most recent visit, it was burned on the bottom. Such a shame that we cannot depend on always having a good experience.
