We were in the mood for seafood and decided to try Chics since we weren't too far away. This is a combination fresh seafood retail shop and a sit-down restaurant. The decor is like someplace you'd find on the eastern shore...casual with lots of model boats and sea motif artwork. The service was very friendly, they treat your like you are family...happy to answer any of your questions. The service was prompt and professional. The food of course is went we went and it was delicious! We had a cup of crab bisque which at first sight was super thick...but happy to say that it wasn't pasty. It was hot flavorful with an old bay seasoning that was just right. We also ordered the crab dip appetizer which came with crispy toasted pita. It was thick with flaked crab, perfectly seasoned and creamy. It made for a wonderful opening dish. Only downside was that it arrived at the same time as our entrees. We both ordered the fresh, fried oyster platter which came with 5 sizeable oysters plus two sides. I got fried and hushpuppies, and my wife got onion rings and coleslaw. The oysters were perfect, mild tasting, with cocktail sauce or tartar sauce, lightly breaded. Delicous. The serving of hushpuppies was huge. They were crispy and just dense enough with out bring doughy. The onion rings were coated in a beer batter that was perfect. Crispy and light. Not like other places who's beer batter rings are so thick you can't find the onion. The rings here were very good. Do expect to pay for your fresh seafood. While the ambience is casual, the prices are not. A dozen steamed crabs in peak season were over $90! I could buy 4 lobsters at the grocery store for the same price. I know that this price is not unusual, in just saying that if you are looking for fresh seafood, you will need to expect to pay for it. It's not a place I could afford to visit every week, but when I'm in the mood for seafood, either to cook at home or to eat out, this business will be high on my list. read more

Robbie at the seafood counter is the friendliest gentleman. He was knowledgeable of all the seafood and made some great recommendations. I got a pound of haddock, a pound and a half of shrimp, six oysters on the half shell, and a slice of carrot cake. Quite honestly, I'm shocked that this restaurant has only 3 5 stars. I have frequented this restaurant several times with my wife and several family members. We have never been disappointed with their food. Although the menu is not extensive, the food here is excellent. My favorite dish here so far is the lump crabmeat sautéed in a garlic butter sauce. The stuffed flounder with lump crabmeat is another delicious dish. The cream of crab soup appetizer is loaded with crabmeat and absolutely delicious. On Saturdays they offer a dozen soft shell crabs for $25. The service has always been excellent. The dining area and bathrooms are very clean. The area is small that has about twelve tables that seat 4-6 people each. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are offered with dinner. There is also a fresh seafood counter for those looking to bring some fresh seafood home. As for the pricing for a meal, expect to pay between $40-$50 per person. Chic's seafood is a little hole in the wall tucked away on the southside of Hagerstown. It's an authentic Maryland seafood restaurant. My fish was great and I was so excited to find a place that serves hush puppies. You can also buy seafood there to take home to prepare. Nice experience. read more

Chic's Seafood has been a staple in Hagerstown for decades. Overall, the food is good, but I've had better. I ordered the "fish-n-chips", and while the food was okay, I was a little confused by how the fish was prepared. Every time I've ordered this dish in the past from other restaurants, it's covered in a crispy batter and fried. The fish I received looked like it was breaded with breaded crumbs and fried in a skillet. Again, the fish itself was fine, I'm just not used to the way it was prepared for your typical fish & chips. I would liken the fries to boardwalk fries, but, unfortunately, they were overcooked. The staff was super nice and accommodating. It's just a shame that I didn't enjoy my food better. Chics seafood I live in Florida my friend and I go up there twice a year she used to live up this way and never had a problem until recently we ate inside enjoyed it and like always we go to the market to take stuff home we both spent close to $200 a piece which we normally do well when I got home I realized the fresh lump crab meat that I purchased ( 2 containers) had expiration dates that were expired 6 months ago so I had my friend check hers and hers was also expired so she made some phone calls and got nowhere no refund no nothing so we just spent all that money to throw in the trash (because I will not eat six month expired food) first she had talked to an employee and then the next day talked to the owner she said it came in fresh so there is nothing that she can do so my friend decided to call the company that it came from they said they do not put expiration dates on fresh product So in the end we lost out on at least $$200 worth of food however chicks seafood lost our business and will spread the word around I used to rave on how good chicks seafood is now it's going to be the opposite So sad that they could not help us out. I've waited a while to put this review out figuring they would do the right thing I hope this review helps other people in the future DON'T GO TO CHICS read more

My chef husband and I really wanted seafood before leaving MD & Chic's popped up on a google search. A little nervous due to the reviews but alas, the bad reviews were unfounded. 1. That "smell" people complained about? It's called seafood people. It's called fried food. It's a delicious smell that reminds me of the fish shacks on the Pacific Ocean. If you don't like that smell; probably shouldn't be eating at a SEAFOOD restaurant. 2. Our food was delivered promptly & everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. 3. Hubby got a seafood combo; I the DELUXE crab cakes. It is a ton of food! The "2" shrimp are actually HUGE so two was plenty. The "1" oyster was HUGE. My husband can put away a ton of food & he couldn't finish this platter. Deluxe crab cakes were filled with nice lump crabmeat. No gross fillers that shouldn't be there. Homemade tarter sauce. People who complained about the crab cake probably ordered the less expensive one which is NOT made with lump crab- trust me there's a difference. Don't blame the restaurant for your stupidity when ordering. 4. Yes the decor is dark and a lot of wood. THATS WHAT A SEAFOOD SHACK IS!! Omg people. Haven't you ever been to the west coast? I've been here twice in the past month with no complaints. RAW OYSTERS were delicious (best I've had in this area). Crab topped pretzel is a meal itself, by far the biggest pretzel I've seen. I drove from NY to NC with my family and wanted to grab Maryland crabs Togo for dinner. I am a big fan of clam chowder soup and have tried many seafood restaurants along the East Coast (from Maine to Florida). This restaurant makes a clam chowder soup the WORST. I ordered a pint of New England Clam Chowder Soup to share with my son. It has almost no clams, tastes SOUR, and very thick texture like mashed potato. My son said he can literally use chopsticks to eat this soup. Crab cake is deep fried but tastes okay. I only gave one star for a cashier. Very disappointed, wasted my time and money $$. read more

We came here because I wanted good seafood while we were in Maryland. I read the reviews on yelp and people seemed to love it or hate it. So we decided to give it a chance. It's a quaint little place with tables made from old singer sewing machines and sturdy solid wood tops. The server was nice and attentive without hovering. She was also very sweet to my 6 year old. I started with cream of crab soup. It had big juicy lumps of crab in it. Then I had the combo #3 with the lobster tail (I added crab imperial), crab legs,steamed shrimp, steamed clams and oysters. I would have traded the clams and oysters for more crab or shrimp but overall I was completely happy with my dinner. The boyfriend had the clam chowder and then the crab leg and shrimp dinner. He seemed pretty happy with his two. I'd definitely come back. If I ever do, maybe I'll go for the whole crabs that they throw out on the table and give you a hammer to eat. We were on our way from Pennsylvania and decided we'd like some crabs. Searched Google and this place came up. Average rating was four stars and the prices looked super affordable for seafood, so why not? (I still can't understand why ANYONE would give this place four stars, but whatever.) So the place has a weird set up. The entrance takes you into what looks like a deli, and the restaurant is off that. There's a downward ramp going into the restaurant, and it's SUPER dark in there...I almost fell because I didn't see it. Anyway, the restaurant itself is just a small room...with a really gross smell in there. I mean, I don't know why we didn't leave right away (I guess we were exhausted and hungry as crap). So the menu looked great, lots of stuff to choose from. We both got the snow crab legs with baked potatoes and "buttered corn," which I assumed (wrongly) was corn on the cob. We also ordered the crab dip as an appetizer. Omg that crab dip was so gross...weird taste, and soupy, and the chips we're just WEIRD, I can't describe them. So we got our food in about fifteen minutes. So, the crab: a cluster and a half for $17.99 with the side dishes. The crabs were steamed, but didn't come very hot, and had no seasoning (like Old Bay). Oh, and the dipping "butter" that came with the crab was literally flavored oil. Nasty. Baked potato was fine, though it didn't come with butter...it was some margarine spread or something. The corn was literally canned corn, and it was cold. The only bite I took was the initial one, and I almost spit it out. Gross. So, between the putrid smell and the cold, unseasoned food, I'd recommend you stay away. We would've been more satisfied with McDonald's, and $40 richer. The one star is for the server. She was sweet. We wasted $50 today. Lesson learned. read more

We dined in person today, and it was great to be back! I had the broiled crab cakes, and they were truly lump crab meat with a light, pleasant seasoning. Nicely done, Chic's! My family also had the sautéed mussels in a garlic and white wine sauce, a simple broiled haddock sandwich, and a shrimp basket. And we started with a tasty bowl of Maryland crab cake soup. The decor is fun-- nautical and nostalgic, and the server was friendly and attentive. They also have clean and updated restrooms, and a takeout counter for buying seafood to cook at home. It was a wonderful and memorable meal, and we will be back again soon! read more
