Penn Primary 700 Walnut Street Patient Grievance Regarding Sarah Alles, NP This complaint regarding the unacceptable care I received from Sarah Alles, NP. I have never left a medical appointment feeling so dismissed, disrespected, and unheard. I first want to recognize that the front desk staff and medical assistant were professional, courteous, and compassionate throughout my visit. My complaint is solely regarding the conduct and professionalism of Sarah Alles. From the beginning of the appointment, Ms. Alles displayed a dismissive and unprofessional demeanor. As I attempted to explain information I had received from Labcorp regarding how to place a standing order for my thyroid bloodwork after previously being told she was unfamiliar with the process she interrupted me before I could finish and stated that she "didn't have time" because there was too much to cover during the appointment. Rather than listening to a legitimate concern about my ongoing medical care, she abruptly cut me off. I also attempted to discuss the significant delays I have experienced in receiving responses to my portal messages while I have been trying to manage my health and understand why I have not been feeling well. Instead of addressing those concerns professionally, she commented about the number of portal messages I had sent, which made me feel as though I was being criticized for advocating for my own health and attempting to communicate with my provider. When I questioned why she was being so dismissive toward me, she only then apologized. However, she immediately attempted to justify her behavior by blaming the nurse, stating that the appointment was running behind because the nurse had spent too much time with me. I found it completely inappropriate and unprofessional to shift responsibility onto another member of the staff or suggest that I was somehow responsible for the delay. Patients should never be made to feel guilty for the amount of time their medical team spends providing care. Respectful communication and active listening are fundamental expectations of any healthcare provider. Unfortunately, I experienced neither. I left the appointment feeling that my concerns were an inconvenience rather than an important part of my medical care. This experience was not an isolated frustration. It occurred against the backdrop of ongoing communication difficulties with this provider, including delayed responses when I was seeking guidance about my health. The cumulative effect has resulted in a complete loss of confidence in Sarah Alles as my healthcare provider. As a result, I will be transferring my care to another practice. I am requesting that Office Manager Ben contact me as soon as possible regarding this grievance. I expect this complaint to be reviewed seriously and addressed appropriately. If I do not receive a timely response, I will pursue this matter through the appropriate patient relations and administrative channels. No patient should leave a medical appointment feeling dismissed, interrupted, blamed, or discouraged from asking questions about their own healthcare. I sincerely hope my experience prompts meaningful review so that other patients are not treated in the same manner. read more

I put out a review, which was not complimentary, and received a response from PennMed (no name given) asking for my info so they could contact me to address my issue with them - no, I was not provided with a contact, so I could contact THEM. I provided my contact information, but haven't heard back. SO, after a problem with trying to get a breast MRI while getting an abdominal MRI (just so you know, my breast lump was a matter of inches away from where the MRI already being performed was), I decided to try a different doctor, since it has been difficult to get one with my original oncologist, whose office is literally around the block from me. I walked into the office to make an appointment, and was told I would be contacted within 48 hours. What doctor's office doesn't/can't/won't make an appointment when you literally walk into the office to make one? Apparently PennMed sends out requests for Yelp inbox responses, but never bothers to check when a response is provided. ..... and I hear rural medical care is poor..... read more

The medical care provided is first-rate but at this point I think it's fair to conclude that the implementation of streamlined billing, digital record keeping and administrative transparency promised in the Affordable Care Act has yet to materialize at Penn Medicine. I can have tests done at Capital Health, Robert Wood Johnson and a litany of other Corporate Medicine Bonesaws in the region and when it comes time to pay my bill, Penn Medicine is the only provider who refuses to send an itemized receipt of payment to my email. They claim it's against policy thinking that snail mail is still the way to go. I have waited more than a month and in many cases, two or more for a record that we're square. Oh, it's not that they don't believe in efficiency as they'll wake you from a coma to snag your insurance information in the ER but they are clearly not comfortable with technology as prosaic as email. Well, good for them as they are now my provider of last resort... time to rocket into the 21st Century guys. Next time you'll wait, because the check is almost in the mail. Promise. read more

I called to make an appointment at this practice when getting back in shape, and wanted to get a physical, bloodwork, and other details that would show me what areas of health I need to focus on. When making the appointment they assured me they could provide these services in my appointment. I also had some knee pain I wanted to be checked out. They were booked for over a month, so by the time I had my appointment, my knee pain was not there any longer. When showing up, I explained to the radiologist what I wanted to do, and she mentioned they only treat injuries. I then said, ok, let's just cancel the appointment. She said, you need to talk to the doctor to cancel the appointment. Also, to talk to the doctor, they are going to want to see an X-ray. I mentioned I didn't feel I needed an x-ray, but they insisted and gave one anyways, explaining it's ok, I can cancel with the doctor when I see her. When seeing the doctor, I told her I wanted to cancel the appointment. She said that's fine. I thought it was clear I was cancelling the appointment, but they then sent me a bill for around $500 for radiology and an appointment with the doctor. When disputing this bill, they said since I saw the doctor, I'm getting charged. Total scam. They pressured me into a service I didn't want or need, and assured when I saw a doctor, I could cancel the appointment, but then used me seeing the doctor as an excuse to charge for the appointment. read more

Everyone was super nice here. I made an appointment rough MyPennMedicine portal and they were able to get me an appointment within two weeks, which is almost impossible at good healthcare providers like Penn. I went to see Dr. Woods who was extremely nice, non judgmental, and very informative. They offer walk in hours which is almost unheard of with Primary Care doctors. The facility was extremely clean, the view from the 17th floor is beautiful, I could sit there all day. I'm glad I have decided to make this my go to office for routine check ups. read more

Now I remember why it is best to seek treatment at a world class teaching hospital, than to accept second best from suburban medical providers. They just know more and practice at the highest level of competence and integrity. So, when I sought a second opinion before agreeing to a lithotripsy, I scheduled an appointment with Victor Carpiniello, M.D., on the 19th floor of Penn Medicine Washington Square, this week. Impressive offices and even more impressive people there, from reception through Dr. Carpiniello, and everyone in between. There was little wait to see the doctor after completing the standard forms/questionnaires. He came into the examination room with a warm smile and years of experience. He knew what I was dealing with and the treatment options. If I wanted, he could take care of the condition later in the week on an outpatient surgical basis. I liked the way he talked to me, and his calm demeanor throughout. We agreed to take care of business when suggested, but he wanted me to first have a cardiac clearance as a precaution because of my medical history. That was scheduled for two days later. Turned out, before undergoing general anesthesia for kidney stones, I would need a stress test (which I was due for anyway). That takes place tomorrow. Given the unexpected twists and turns this situation has already taken, my decision to seek more information from a higher authority was the right one. It is difficult to express the increased concern knowing the extra steps that are required to protect my health, while balanced by the sense of confidence and relief I also feel knowing I am in the best hands possible. No knock on my regular urologist who has tended to me for many years, but knowing I am being treated by a leading authority on these conditions; someone who is teaching other doctors how to do these procedures, offers a security blanket that makes going through all this much easier to accept, and sleep at night. Will update this review as all the steps take place and I come out the other end. read more

I've been in the Penn care network all my life and they have never disappointed-- my experiences have always been outstanding. The staff members are friendly, patient, and caring. Not to mention, the view at this particular location overlooking center city on the 18th floor is quite pretty. As a new patient I saw Dr. Steven Chesnick who did an excellent job helping with my hearing problem and I couldn't be more grateful. The one complaint that comes to mind is that it can be very difficult to schedule with speciality doctors, as they are booked months in advance. read more

I came here for a couple followup appointments from a recent surgery and I had a great experience with Dr Oren Friedman and the Penn Medicine staff. I give 5 stars because of the expertise of Dr Friedman. On the 18th floor, the waiting room is nice, the staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and organized. You can park in the attached garage and receive discounted (not free) parking - new to get it validated at the front desk. There is also some (limited) street parking nearby. read more

My mother has been seeing Dr. Boulware who is a PA and very nice. She prescribed the first medication for my mother's severe back pain which worked for a while then she broke out in a painful rash all over her body. Then they tried a different medication which made my mother sick to her stomach and caused severe vomiting. She has ulcers and is very limited to the medications she can take. Years ago when my mother lived in florida she still had these extreme back pain and they gave her perocet which worked really well. My mother asked if she could take the Percocet instead of these other medications and they said that they only prescribe pain meds for patients with cancer, which is a lie. My mother has a friend with back issues who is prescribed opioids, and she is the one who recommended we go to penn. But the PA, Dr. Boulware said absolutely not and then we asked to talk to the attending, Dr. Boominathan and she said the same thing about only prescribing to cancer patients. When I told her that was a lie because we were recommended by one of their patients who does not have cancer and gets prescribes opiates, she said that the visit was over and told us to go somewhere else. I get there is an opiate crisis, which btw, these doctors created, but unless you are literally dying of cancer, they will not prescribe an opiate. My mother is 82 years old and is in extreme pain, however they will prescribe every other medication, which my mom is allergic to and would rather see their patients in extreme pain instead of actually helping their patients, which totally goes against the oath that they take as doctors. I would recommend finding another pain management doctor or clinic to go to because they are only pushing the latest drug that their sales reps are pushing and dont care about actually treating a patient individually. they are useless. Very very disappointed in Penn Medicine!! read more

Probably one of the worst hospital experiences of my life; I guess it's true Penn Hospital is just a name now. Doctor was completely unprofessional; my wife asked a series of questions where they gave you the Penn runaround; totally negative and lack of empathy in the entire situation; you could just see they really didnt care about her concerns at all; Penn Hospital aint want it used to be... All they have left is their name. I suggest people avoid this place at all cost and find/research for better doctors bc these people as you'd expect are more into themselves and their own agenda; shocked at how bad it was; if youre looking for woke doctors with an agenda this is your place read more

I had the misfortune of seeing Dr. Saur in February. My GI doctor referred me to her for a lesion which I had discovered in 2022. I actually gave her a typed timeline of my problem and what I had and had not done to date. She obviously paid no attention to anything I said or wrote. She put in her notes that I was being seen because of something on a colonoscopy report and then pulls up a colonoscopy report from over 20 years ago, where I had a polyp removed. The next colonoscopy report, which she did not pull up, showed everything was good. She tells me the lesion appears to be external only and we would do a EUA and biopsy but then puts in her notes that since it is internal I have agreed to a type of surgery I never heard of before. Client Services took my complaint and said they escalated it to 4 people. To date they have not even tried to contact me. I was given a form to fill out to request my medical records be changed but that is not guaranteed even though a lot of what this doc put in her notes is totally inaccurate. Seems PA hospital cares very little about the patients and the stress they put on us by allowing their doctors to make up stuff in your records. Hopefully no other doctors will believe anything she has written in her report. I have since had the biopsy done by a private practice doctor and I am dealing with cancer. I have been referred to a Penn MOHS surgeon. However, if this will require any consultation with colorectal I believe I will need to change hospitals because from what I have seen the Colorectal section of PA Hospital is totally inadequate to give me quality care. I cannot believe that a doctor can make up stories to put in your chart and you are the one who has to do all the work to try to get it fixed. read more

Dr. Alhambra Frarey and staff in the OBGYN department are wonderful! They replaced my IUD recently and made it an almost painless experience. They were very keen to my needs as a patient and made sure that I felt comfortable at every step of the procedure. Highly recommend! read more

Parking attached to the building but much more pricey than HUP parking in university city. Otherwise, no issues. Like that there is a front desk for questions and to validate parking. The building seems clean and looks nice. read more

I had a bill with a due date of 12/19/19, I called on 12/19/19 to pay the bill, and the rep told me they sent it in for collections on 12/13/19. I've had issues with Penn med in the past, and will no longer be using them. Zero accountability, horrible customer service. read more

I lived in London under the British Socialized Medical system and I was able to get both appointments scheduled and get callbacks back from doctors after tests in a much more timely fashion. The other day I was at another part of the Penn System, Penn Pain Medicine because I was having extreme back pain. It took me 6 weeks to get an appointment even after telling the staff member I was in extreme, debilitating pain. After seeing the Dr, who I believe to be excellent, he told me to make an appointment for six weeks out. I walked out of the exam room to the reception desk to schedule the next exam. I was told that 7 weeks was the earliest appointment! Something is wrong with the entire Penn system if people in extreme pain can't be seen for six weeks and it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get ones Dr to call you with the results of tests and what they mean. Penn is broken. Penn medicine seems to have great doctors with horrendous horrendous system problems. read more

Think twice before you go to Penn Medicine for surgery. Management has made a decision to wake people up after major surgery and not give them sleep medication. They are not honest and do not tell you this in advance. Even though I was exhausted, it was fine with them that I did not sleep all day and all night following a mastectomy. I have post traumatic stress from being tied down in a bed with IV and anti-blood clot booties for 18 hours (from 2 p.m. to the next morning) and not being given sleep medication. I am told that it is the same for heart surgery patients. read more

Unfortunately I met a terrible doctor by the name of William I Jaffe. He was very arrogant and rude to me and my wife. He would did not listen to my symptoms and kept comparing himself to my issues. Terrible bedside manners and simply does not care about his patients. I now have read many reviews online about Jaffe and I wish I never visited him in the first place. I had a medical procedure that I did not need and it left me worse off. I would not recommend this Doctor to anyone. read more

I made an appointment at the lab online for 5:15 pm, and on the website, it says that the lab closes at 5:30. When I turn up for my appointment at 5:15, all the lights are off, and it seems everyone has left. I wait around for a while and eventually see someone walking around. I knock, and a receptionist comes to the door, who informs me that the doors close at 5:17 pm (it is 5:18 by the time I've waited and knocked and she's come to the door)! Hard to believe. Most likely everyone simply left early because there was no one waiting. But don't take appointments if you don't intend to honor them, and don't advertise a 5:30 pm closing time if you're going to knock off early when it's quiet! read more
