Specifically, the shop is there to help you enjoy Joseph Sayers Lake, the scenic lake in Bald Eagle. This place rents out a variety of boats to park goers, from canoes and kayaks to pontoon boats and jet skis. Also, you can rent for short and long periods of time alike - anywhere from an hour to all day, according to their website. The website also mentions that they offer an on-lake fuel dock with non-ethanol fuel, fishing and boating supplies, live bait, snacks, drinks, ice, and camping supplies. Like I said: they're here to help you enjoy your time on the water! Reservations aren't required, but are recommended - but also aren't available for each type of boat. I know this because prior to my visit, I learned that canoes and kayaks are first come, first serve. Not a big deal, but still something to be aware of, and admittedly weird since you can reserve a paddle board...just, not canoes or kayaks? When I visited, a relative and I opted to enjoy three hours of kayaking on the water. A few other groups went for the pontoon boats, and we also shared the water with folks who clearly owned their own boats and were using approved launch points to join in the fun. Our visit was pretty straight-forward; we paid, got outfitted with life vests and paddles, and got some help launching ourselves after we asked for it. Coming back in was admittedly less fun since the very busy staff didn't come help to pull in our kayaks; we managed by ourselves but it took a bit of coordination and teamwork since a kayak that's half in, half out of the water isn't particularly stable. We also admittedly dodged some groups of people on land because not every other guest remembered that masks are necessary outdoors in 2020, too; still, the good news about being outside is that it's at least easier to keep your distance. And the staff did mask up at all times, so at least being inside when checking in and out wasn't overly stressful. Boats & Bikes is exactly what it sounds like and I definitely appreciate their set-up, which made it easy to enjoy time on the lake in this beautiful state park. I would definitely come here again and take advantage of the different boat rental options during future visits to the area.

When I admitted I'd never been to Opossum Lake, she looked at me like I was missing out and told me I needed to check it out. Well...challenge accepted! When I got home, I looked it up and discovered it was only about 25 minutes from my house. Somehow, yet again, I had managed to overlook another great outdoor spot practically in my own backyard. A beautiful four-mile trail around a lake? Count me in! I headed out early on a mid-July Sunday morning, hoping to beat both the heat and the crowds. GPS brought me right to the parking area without any trouble, and even though there were already quite a few people there fishing, I had no problem finding a parking spot. The trail itself was fantastic! One of the things I appreciated most was how much the terrain changed throughout the loop. Parts of the trail were covered with crushed stone, others with pine needles, tanbark or natural dirt. It kept the hike interesting without ever becoming difficult. The entire four-mile loop is well-marked, easy to follow and beautifully shaded, making it an excellent summer hike even when temperatures start creeping up. The recent rain left a few muddy spots along the trail, but nothing that slowed me down. PRO TIP: If you're hiking after a rainstorm, use a little extra caution on the wooden footbridges. They can get a bit slick. The trail offered plenty to see along the way. I spotted birds, turtles and beautiful views across the lake and I found myself stopping more than once simply to enjoy the peaceful scenery. One unexpected highlight came when I crossed the spillway bridge. The interpretive signs explaining the history of the dam, the high-water markers and why the bridge was built so high above the creek added a neat educational element to the hike that I wasn't expecting. I always appreciate when a place teaches me something while I'm out exploring. Beyond hiking, it's easy to see why Opossum Lake has become such a popular recreation area. Throughout my visit I saw anglers casting from the shoreline, boats out enjoying the water and families making use of the many picnic areas scattered around the lake. Whether you're looking to hike, fish, paddle or simply enjoy a peaceful picnic, there's plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the scenery. I can already tell Opossum Lake is going to earn a permanent spot on my short list of local hikes. It's close to home. It's easy enough to enjoy without needing to mentally prepare for a mountain expedition. And it's beautiful enough that it never feels like "just another walk." Sometimes you want a huge adventure. Sometimes you just want to lace up your hiking boots, get a few peaceful miles under your belt and spend some time outside. Opossum Lake is absolutely perfect for those days!

The distance around the lake is, I think, about 3 or 3 1/2 miles and there are some small hills, steps, and mostly dirt or pine-needle-covered terrain. In terms of kayaking, I can paddle around all areas in about an hour. It's a convenient, easy-to-get-to location and it's open until 10pm.

There are two levels to the boat, and we headed up to the open air top level. There are a variety of tables and chairs available for seating. The lower level offers the concessions, though there was a friendly staff person who came around and offered to take orders and bring things to your table for you. They showed a movie that was about 20 minutes or so long that reviewed the history of the boat and the area, and then the remainder of the time you could enjoy the river and area. It was interesting to hear about the history and nature of the area, plus how the community all came together to not only raise the funds for the recreation of the boat, but also spent hours putting the pieces together once they arrived. Restrooms area available both on board and in a small facility at the dock. There is a nicely sized parking lot available too. They also offer a variety of specialty cruises, which also sound fun!

The place had some nice hiking trails you can follow or even walk your dog in. My aunt walks her dogs here often, and she never had an issue here. She even let's them take a dip in the water and they love it. I didn't really see any trash laying around, so it looked to be kept clean. There is also a little playground you can take your kids to and have some fun. Next to the playground was a restroom too so you don't have to go far. We went in the early morning and didn't see many people. We were able to enjoy a nice walk in peace and quiet. Overall, it was a good experience and would come back if I'm in town again.

I wanted to break my long hiatus to talk about my Milton state park experience. If you love…read morewalking, looking at plants, and the Susquehanna river, I 5/5 recommend going to Milton State park. Also, if you love Japanese Knotweed, Lol just kidding. Japanese knotweed is not ideal. In fact I hope more native plants can thrive in this environment and restore some stability. Lots of doggos which is very fun! As long as the owners pick up the poop. I would say the worst part of my experience was getting some all over my right shoe, what a bummer! Even after that I managed to have a great time! My one critique is that one of the plaques says Quercus rubra instead of Quercus palustris, a minor detail but I can't not say something. Quercus palustris has pointer leaves and has top branches pointing up and lower branches pointing down. Im getting off topic... Anyway, Milton State park has some lovely history and although it is small and a changing ecosystem, there are some great things happening there. Keep your eyes out for native trees and plants because they are still here! Also watch out for flying soccer balls and running children... I used to play my youth soccer games here as a kid :)

Penn's Cave has been offering guided boat tours for over 140 years and it's easy to see why it's…read morestill such a popular stop. Located in Centre County, PA (which apparently has over 130 caves!), this unique tour takes you through a beautiful limestone cavern entirely by boat. The cave tour lasts about 45 minutes and costs $25 per person. They also offer a wildlife tour by bus, but we only had time for the cave portion. Be aware there's a fairly large staircase you'll need to go down to reach the cave entrance. Something to keep in mind if anyone in your group has mobility issues. Each boat holds around 22 people, but we visited on a quiet Monday afternoon and only had 8 in our group, which made it feel more personal. Our tour guide was excellent and knowledgeable, engaging, and had a sense of humor. He encouraged questions and had thoughtful answers for everything we threw at him. At the end of the cave, you actually exit into a small lake, take a brief spin around, and then head back through the cave to where you started, very cool and peaceful. There's also a gift shop on-site that sells snacks, drinks, and the usual souvenirs. Tours typically depart every 30 to 60 minutes depending on how busy they are, so timing is pretty flexible. All in all, it's a fun, unique experience that's well worth the stop!

It was a Sunday, and we were planning on paddling in Pine Creek, but had a bad shuttle experience there the previous day and decided to try something new on the way home to Pittsburgh. We called early in the morning before they were open, and Dave ended up calling back quickly, and he was very amenable to setting up our shuttle. We got there a little later than we had planned, but they were ready for us, and rapidly got us loaded with our personal kayaks and the rentals, and then we were on our way. To gloss over the trip, it was beautiful, and Dave had given us some tips on things to watch out for, including a bald eagle's nest. Great day. When we got to the takeout, we called Dave, and he was down from their location within 5 minutes. So a great experience....you can tell that they love what they do, and really look forward to repeat business and seeing you again.

When we arrived at the Montour Preserve Chase had our Kayak and life jackets ready and waiting for us and he gave us some helpful insight as to what to expect when we got out into the water. So we headed out into the lake. It was one of the most peaceful experiences ever. We literally had the entire lake to ourselves. As we did our first lap around. We got to see a couple of deer all in separate areas chilling on the edge of the water. They didn't seem to mind us at all. They acted as if we weren't even there. We spent about 2&1/2 hours cruising around. They offer single, double sit on or sit in kayak's and pedal boats if you like. Trust me you definitely want to hit this spot up. It's amazing hands down. When we finally finished we chilled and talked to Chase for a while. He's definitely one of the nicest guys ever and he made our experience that much better. We could've stayed there and talked to him for hours. There's NO question. HEAD THERE NOW IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE A GREAT TIME. BECAUSE WE SURE DID ! We'll l definitely be back numerous times. And we hope to talk to Chase again every time for sure.

We had kayaked a few times before on lakes and in bays, but never before on a river. Since R.A.C. owner Dave was already engaged at a meet on the Saturday we wanted to go out, he put us in the able hands of his assistant, Jim. Jim was a terrific guide. He drove us to a scenic put out area underneath a covered bridge, taught us techniques for paddling more efficiently (which no one ever had), made sure we were safe and comfortable, and even climbed into the water to push us when we got stranded on a rock. (Something that apparently happens in shallow rivers!) We enjoyed a blissful late afternoon and evening paddling 11 mi down river while the sun set. Following our excursion, Jim gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner in Danville (Old Forge Brewery). Here, he and his girlfriend, Emily, came and chatted with us while we waited for our food. We felt like locals! I can't recommend this company enough for value, service, safety, and fun.

At times the hiking trails became overgrown. If hiking is not your thing they also have boating and fishing options. Obviously, the lakes in the park are usually packed with canoes and kayaks. When it comes to fishing, trout is sought after! After day-time activities you can cool of at the sand beach located on the lake. Around that area they have pagodas and barbecues that are great for picnicking! They also have a playground with multiple slides for the kids! During the winter time, they also have plenty of activities including snowmobiling, sledding and ice skating! The bathrooms here are new and clean so you can change into your bathing suit at the park! I would highly recommend this Park!

The cloud cover from the storm did hide the moon but, eh, that really didn't matter. The sunset more than made up for any missed visuals. Eventually we get to a little, and I do mean little, island under the Forster Street Bridge where we got out, had some provided snacks/drinks and got to watch the lightening in the distance and listen to some of the tremendously bad karaoke from the Harrisburg Beach Club off in the distance. Sadly, before you know it, times up and you're back at the HQ in Wormleysburg. Door to door it was a solid three hours. Now about the two staff members...(the owner Matt and Kelsee) they really helped to make this a hell of an experience. We've got some prior kayaking experience and they basically just let us do us while pointing out any wildlife and overall, it was just a really good hang with great laid-back vibes. If someone is on the fence about doing the Full Moon trip, let the pictures do the talking. You can't do this anywhere and honestly the whole experience would have been equally great during the day. We paid for the Fort Hunter drop off location for a bachelor party of 11 people on September 1st,…read more2024. Here I give my reasoning why everyone should stay far away from this business. When Susquehanna Outfitters receives business, they do not care about you. They do not care about the experience of their customers. 1) How can they mess up a reservation drop off location? 2) If they cared for their customers, how would they not know that the water on the creek is too shallow to send kayaks? For some reason the driver missed the turn to head toward the requested drop off point at Fort Hunter. This was made apparent by the accompanying vehicle in the convoy from the business location when they honked the horn at our driver as our driver did not make the right turn when we should have to head to the Fort Hunter drop off zone. Looking back seeing the 2nd truck make a right turn while we continued straight. I was skeptical because when we stopped the vehicle it was only a short distance from the business. Also why is this place called Fort Hunter? Where is the Fort? They off loaded us one by one and while doing so, the driver and his partner were whispering amongst themselves. I was thinking this is weird. I ask, "This is Fort Hunter?" mind you, 5 of the 11 kayaks are in the water. The driver answers, "Yup." Again, the two employees whispering amongst themselves. The 11 of us are now in the water on our kayaks, ready for the rapids... the rapids that never came. They dropped us off at the Conodoguinet Creek, NOT Fort Hunter. About 30 minutes into our float, it occurred to us that we were dropped off at the wrong location. What do we do now? We paid for 6 hours. Would you like to know how it went? There was a 2-week dry span of no rain before this weekend's bachelor trip. Let's start there. Not only did they drop us off at the wrong location, but they also did not test run the creek beforehand. The water was so shallow that there were prolonged periods where you could not even paddle... it was so shallow that you COULD NOT paddle! Why would they send 11 people down this creek when you cannot paddle on it?! The number of times that most of us had to get out of the kayak just to drag it over a "rocky" section, which basically just means 2 inches of water because it has not rained in weeks. Why would they send us down here? We paid for Fort Hunter. What did we get? A hell hole. There was nothing we could do about the speed of which we could get out of the creek. We were at mercy to the flow of it. When someone brings a group of 11 people for a reservation, of which everyone had to pay ahead of time in order to reserve a kayak for the 6 hour trip and the business screws up this bad, it is beyond acceptable. *The 2nd truck honked at the driver that missed the right turn. They still unloaded us into the creek when I requested confirmation of the drop off location based on the reservation.* They knowingly did this. How can it be anything but? When Susquehanna Outfitters receives business, they do not care about you. They do not care about the experience of their customers. If they did, how would they not know that the water on the creek is too shallow? How can they mess up a reservation drop off location? What are you paying for? You as a customer are responsible for returning the equipment that is rented safely and without damage, back to the business. That is why you pay $80 a person per kayak for a 6 hour excursion experience. Not a 6 hour roast in the sun and float without the ability to paddle and times of needing to get out to drag the kayak because of shallowness. THE BUSINESS' ONLY RESPONSIBILITY IS DROPPING OFF THE PARTY AT THE CORRECT LOCATION! HOW CAN YOU MESS THAT UP?! It was a horrible experience for everyone involved in the party. Everyone was absolutely fed up with the entire torturous trip and experience we had with Susquehanna Outfitters. Diabolical. Either they knew what they were doing and did it anyway or, they didn't and that is even worse when you put your trust and faith in a business to conduct the bare minimum of care for their customers. When having words with the employee that obviously was not equipped to handle this type of mistake, they offered no recourse. There was no accountability. THEY DID NOT CARE. We, all 11 of us got robbed. And worse, it was a torturous experience that took away 6 hours of our day. The groom was not pleased. I recommend no one give them your business unless you want to be the butt of the joke for their incompetent employees. Rent anywhere else. This business should be out of business. STAY AWAY!
