I called to see if they carry Oliver Tree vinyls as soon as I found out about his passing, because Oliver Tree meant a lot and I wanted to have his vinyl as a memory of him, anyways I called the store and asked, and whoever answered the phone (sounded like an older gentleman) came back and said "We don't have any, but we might start carrying his music since he's dead now". The rude and snobby tone left me utterly speechless. What an insensitive thing to say, a simple "oh not right now, but we might get some soon" would have sufficed. I've gone here before and even complimented the extension of the store but never again. You don't have to like all genres of music, but at least the mindful. read more

If your looking for common bands and posters this is a good place but if your trying to sell anything to them you will get ripped off they don't give you anywhere near what your stuff is and they expect it to be in perfect condition. I've took rare records to this place and gotten nothing back your best bet to sell is to try eBay or any online service before taking it here the staff is super nice and shop is clean but they only provide big name bands they do have a movies and tapes and records the price isn't that bad but they don't take bootlegs concert dvds like rhino records and they have very little selection other then rock pop jazz blues basic shit read more

Super friendly, hometown welcome even before stepping inside. Well organized genres & artists. Lots of hidden values throughout if you have the patience. First and foremost thank you for taking the time to read this review. I have a voice recording of the conversation between myself and a representative of the company named Steve. Had I not recorded the conversation than I doubt anyone would believe the story I'm about to recall. Me and the wife have a record collection which consists of roughly 5 boxes or a out 600 records. We were selling them on platforms such as eBay and actually with some good success. But it grows tiring listing each one, preparing the record to ship, driving it to the post office hoping it makes it in one piece and all the good stuff. My AI had suggested selling them to a record shop in one fell swoop. We knew we'd take a loss but we were willing to at least have look. Perhaps the loss would be worth the times saved on listing each one individually. So we took 5 boxes down to pennylane records in the hopes of getting a quote. The employee (Steve) greeted us and said that they would need some time to sort through the collection and come up with a offer. We agree to leave the records at their shop and they insisted upon leaving a 200 deposit with us in good faith. At exactly 6:58 pm we got a call and what happened next has got to be one of the most unprofessional, childish things I've ever even heard of and upon a phone call downtown it turns out to be illegal as well. I believe the officer I spoke to quoted a PC 454 possession of stolen property. So this phone call made to us 2 min before they close was disappointing. They offered us a very low price and we're not willing to budge. So after some back and forth and no movement on their behalf Steve announced that they put alot of work going through the collection and so if we wanted it back we would now have to bring the 200 deposit plus an additional 200 dollars. I couldn't believe my ears. I asked him if he were serious and he said we gave you a very fair offer had you not been willing to accept it you should not have wasted our time. I said but sir it is not fair on so many different levels. First of all you never mentioned a fee if we decided to not accept your offer he literally said accept our offer or it's going to be 200 more to get your stuff back. Feeling totally hamstringed by this mans thieving tactics I tried to work a compromise about 100 of the records are sound tracks from video games. I said Id accept his low price if I could remove the video game records. At that point he said those are reprints and essentially worthless. So if their worthless than you should have no issues giving those ones back. Ge chuckled this man is a irate little old man with a very hair trigger nasty little attitude. He said if we agree to take those out his offer would be half of that. So the offer is now half for removing what you said was worthless. I told this man do you need a minute to really think about this proposal your making to me right now. He didn't he was totally ok with this pirate tactic. This man this representative of this company was acting like a common thug a pirate. This problem gets worse I put my wife on because I can only tolerate so much ignorance and the first thing he said was "oh he doesn't want to talk to me what is he 7" my wife says ok so when can we pick up our records. He said not today we put them in storage....... What the F is this place for real. He said come down pay the 200 give us back the other 200 400 total and we will make arrangements to get your records. He than said he'd be off the next three days. We ended the call there and my next call was to law enforcement and my cousin who is a district attorney In the inland empire. read more

I have been coming to penny lane records since 2019. I was 16 then and i still go there now at 23. This place is a 25 min drive minimum from me. Everytime i have gone there looking for something specific i find it at a reasonable price. Never had a bad experience. The owner there is super nice and respectful. I saw a review hinting at racism which is genuinely insane. Im an obvious looking mexican kid and they treat me so well there. Very conversational and love to talk about music with the employees and owners. Highly recomend you spend some money here. They have a good selection of music and the prices are the best in my area so far. read more

We came to this place because we want to give small businesses a chance before we hit up big box stores. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience where we wanted to possibly sell some of our collectible CDs today. The older man (whom we assume is the owner) and a younger worker were completely rude and frankly, probably racist. They didn't acknowledge our presence and we were just standing around waiting to be assisted. Finally we were helped and the older man was short and irritated. As he was assessing our items he was clearly irritated and started slamming our cases and tossing them like he didn't even care. He left annoyed and the younger man took over to help. He was rattled to the point his voice was shaky and said "let's get this over with" and offered us a dollar for each item. I don't always type up negative reviews. This place truly deserves zero stars. I highly suggest you go to other places for business. We will never return here as clearly they don't value their customers. read more

If you're a new or casual record collector, this place isn't for you. It's not a fun experience like all of the other shops on the area. No one greets you when you come in or asks if you need help. They have a too-cool-for-you record shop vibe right out of High Fidelity. It's hard to browse when there's more than a few people in the store because it's cramped. It was also more expensive than nearby shops when browsing some of albums I recently picked up at other shops. I've seen them posting about record store day pre-orders on their facebook page which is generally not allowed. Head to Rhino if your considering this place and you'll have a better time. read more

A transplant from Pasadena to settle down in this quaint old town neighborhood. And yes penny lane Is still on my ears and my eyes as well as my heart. Oh the countless treasures on wax one will find as well as cds and cassettes. Not to forget the hard to find 45's that are so rare you'll be glad you stopped by. They also carry an assortment of unique vintage retro tin posters and postcards. As far as the gems on wax,they mostly have all the outlets of rock and jazz plus a few other genres but more of that noise the kids call Rock & Roll. The shop is small and the atmosphere is always vibing with the classics in the background. The staff is very knowledgeable plus they give excellent insight and opinions. Parking is a breeze during the week but gets a little hectic on the weekend.And that's my take on this gem.Peace read more

**update: they have now expanded. i'm kinda surprised that others have had bad experiences at P.L but record store day is usually crazy. still, no excuse to treat customers that way. i wouldn't take it just to get some records and neither should anyone else. (history) penny lane was a small chain of sizable music stores in the 90's (maybe even before that) that i used to go to back when they were around. then he closed all the stores for awhile (presumably personal or business things happened) and the owner moved to a small warehouse in upland maybe around 2010. they only moved to a small shop in upland maybe 8-10 years ago. the owner was never bad to me but i do get a sense of "his way or no way" which isn't uncommon. as far as i recall, the 2 guys who work there now are either his son's or employees who the business is being handed down to in the future. rhino, amoeba, wisecrack and others are also guilty of music snobbery but its always been that way. read more

Great place to visit! Penny Lane has all sorts of records (even CD's) to choose from. Some new, wrapped in original packaging and some used but in great condition and for a good price. We picked up lots of fun vintage records for the kids that ranged from $1-$3. I even got Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton Christmas record for my Grandma. Penny Lane also has a variety of stickers, buttons, and posters. Owners are very nice and compared to other places the records are very reasonably priced. A hidden gem for sure! read more

went to the store to participate on the exclusive record store day 2024, I was in line for about seven hours however we were lied to many times. Owner "Steve Brickler" had a very harsh tone of racism. He was very disrespectful to his customers his staff. I get it this day might be very overwhelming, but I also saw the owner touch one of the customers and snatched multiple records for multiple people was arguing with multiple people overall just really disrespectful I've been coming here for one year now. Writing this on behalf of my bf who came home with some of the greatest finds!!! As you walk in the door you may think this record store isn't big enough, but one look into any section and you'll change your mind. I found a range of different artists from The Cure, Blondie, The Doors, Queen, Tears of Fears, Fleetwood Mac, The Carpenters, The Eagles and even Mac Miller. I didn't feel rushed and was shopping at my own ease. This record store offers buy 10 get two more for free. I didn't catch the two names of the girl and dude in the front but they were both very nice & friendly. When I paid they wrapped my records in a box instead of a plastic bag which was really cool. With tons of choices and genres, this has high potential of becoming my favorite record shop - especially being so close to home. Will be returning 10/10 read more

Will never come back for one basic reason: "Zero Customer Service" My family and I walked in to search for some records, Older man and an lady working there watched us walk in and both looked at us and said nothing ( the principle of a business is to greet customers and make them feel welcome) we looked around for a bit and got a couple more looks and they both went back to what they were doing, and they seemed put off by us (we're an ethnic family, and I felt profiled) we decided to leave as they said nothing. Thank goodness for GPS maps, otherwise I'd never have found this hidden gem of a record store. Apparently the owner moved from Pasadena a number of years back, regardless, his collection is well curated and organized. My first objectives these days are 'recently arrived' bins. If that proves futile (not very often) I immediately ferret out the blues and jazz sections. I scored biggly on both accounts on my first visit. Additionally, if you manage to get 10 or more records or CDs you earn one free. A nice incentive to say the least! I generally have no problem walking the tab up to $100. Unfortunately, for me, all I seem to need (or is it want?) are collectables averaging $20-30 each. While this shop does not mark up old pressings as much as stores in LA or OC, rare records still cost a pretty penny. My girlfriend also scored some great jazz ad well as a clean early pressing of Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind" for $24. A fair price considering what eBay sometimes has in worse condition. I also took note of the CD section and scored some older jazz titles plus a hard to find King Crimson disc. The owner was a cool guy and I enjoyed chatting with him at the register. All-in-all, a definite must go to shop in an area not well saturated with Indy record stores. read more

Went to this place with a bunch of DVDs -- mostly mainstream stuff. I just wanted some sort of trade for them -- wasn't looking to get rich off the things. Guy turned his nose up at me and informed me that he's only interested in Criterion and arthouse stuff. Yeah, I'm sure you are, buddy. I'm sure you'd love to pay me $1 for a Criterion collection title and turn around and try to sell it for $15. These places need to think about how they handle people, especially when it comes to trade/purchase. You'd be better off selling Criterion and arthouse titles on eBay -- you will get far more back from your initial investment. You also won't have to deal with the attitude that you do at Penny Lane. Definitely won't be back. These people try to take advantage of their customers. read more

First time at this spot. Old guy (assuming the owner) and some other older woman was there and gave no greeting at all. That would've been fine except then I asked for a receipt for some postcards and the older woman goes, "Ohh sorry I already deleted iiit" and I'm just staring at her like...okay? Go find a way to get it back then lol. Then she gets annoyed about it (God forbid you have to recall a transaction and press 'print', ohh the inconvenience!), then owner asks me why I need it and I said that I always ask for a receipt, and he jokes passive aggressively, "sorry when something doesn't make sense to me I have to ask." It doesn't need to make sense to you (though it's alarming you run a business and don't understand what typically happens when people make transactions) bro just give me my receipt. If I bought a single pencil and I ask for a receipt, why act like I'm asking you to solve a sudden math problem? Oh, and the section is quite limited (not a 1-star reason). Had a bad experience here today. I was looking specifically for 45' singles today, and the way this store has 45's are in $1-$2 bargain bins at the bottom of their LP album racks. I was browsing and I guess it started to get busy. I didn't think I was in anyone's way, but owner passed by me bending down looking at 45's and said "Not a good day to be looking for singles." A Minute later he said "hey, singles are not for sale today. I looked up and said "What?" and he said "Singles are not for sale today GET UP AND MOVE." I could not believe how rude the owner was to me, a customer. I will NEVER come back here again, which is sad because I had looked forward to coming here. read more

Inventory is average at best. Prices are high. The buyer was an absolute jerk to my record collecting friend who brought in records to sell, treated him disrespectfully and like he didn't know anything about records. At the end of insulting the records brought in for sale or trade, said he would take the box of records for free if my friend wanted to leave them. I was there and heard the conversation. Needless to say, my band of record collecting buddies, who drop hundreds per month each on records, will not walk into this store again. Way to go, Penny Lane! Great place when you need a good dig for treasures be it vinyl, cd's DVD's and more. Store set up is very comfortable and the owners are cool, I've following them for years. Vinyl selection is very good and you can find some real affordable and sometimes hard to find gems in the cd and dvd sections. Great spot to pick up your free copy of the record collectors guide right at the entrance of the shop. This record store is well organized. All of the vinyl in the main/top bins are in vg+ to nm condition. The mgmt. does a very good job of only stocking above avg. condition records in the store. Prices are reasonable, and I have definitely found the occasional treasure here. I am usually pleased by the house and funk music offerings at PL, and PL definitely fulfills it's stated goal of specializing in quality used vinyl. My husband and I saw this shop a week ago and decided to stop by yesterday to check it out. It was my husband, myself and my 70 year old mother-in-law. We looked around and I picked out a few albums, and my husband had picked out some cds. Although my husband can spend hours looking through these things, us ladies were ready to move on. We decided to walk around to the other shops. Right as we got outside to the sidewalk, the older man behind the counter came running outside to ask me where the cd I had was. I turned and replied I had placed it on the rack. This man goes back inside and starts complaining that I had just thrown all of the items I picked out down on the albums. My husband who was kneeling down stood up and said those are the items he was going to purchase. At this time the store clerk replies " oh yeah I guess I did see you guys together ". My husband has no idea that he went running outside to see if I'd stole a $2.99 cd. This person needs to act like he's had more than one customer at a time in his shop. Very disappointed!!!
