My teenager wanted to pick up a few vinyls, and since I'd been meaning to check this place out (it's right in our area), it felt like the perfect opportunity to stop by. As soon as we walked in, there was a live stream going on, and the cashier came across pretty loud and a bit intimidating, at least from my teenager's perspective. To keep things simple, I just told him to grab what he was looking for and we'd head out. While he browsed, I ended up finding a couple of records for myself too. The shop itself is really cool and has a unique vibe, different from other record stores I've visited. It's not your typical setup, which makes it stand out in a good way. One of the best record stores around! There's a little something for everyone. Vinyls, pins, clothing and the best part is the store cat greeting you when you walk in. The front part of the store has plenty of vinyls to dig through, all organized and ready for you. The small upper part of the store has tons of clothing / band tees. If you're a well versed fan of punk rock, you might know the name Dr Strange. They released records from legendary acts like Voodoo Glow Skulls, Guttermouth and Face to Face among others. Well the Doc has had a record store in the same neighborhood location since 1997 and it is predictably incredible. Located on the corner of Amethyst and Lomita, Dr Strange sticks out like a beacon of awesomeness. Once you're inside you'll find yourself in a sea of all thing punk rock. Records, CDs, band shirts, magazines, patches, clothing you name it! Prices are all over the place because they have a ton of rare stuff but there are still deals to be had. They also do occasional concerts which are either very cheap or free! They update Facebook and Instagram (along with weekly livestreams) often so that's the best way to find out about shows or incoming goodies. The man himself is truly a character! There just are not places like Dr. Strange records. In a world of streaming and apps it's nice to have the alternative where you have something physical you can hold. And with tv shows and music being able to be censored or even wiped off of streaming services, physical media is as important as ever! Best record store in the area...in southern california...in the US. Can't change my mind. When you walk in Bill greets you as if you're old friends and always asks if you need any help or looking for something specific. Which I once asked for a certain band and they had just sold their last copy and I came back months later (second time there) and he remembered me and said he had some LPs come in. Their selection of punk albums is amazing and they're always getting new stuff in. Of all the shops I visit in the area they're also the most fairly priced. It's a bit on the expensive side, but realistically with the cleanliness of the store and the quality/ care of the used records, the price makes sense. Absolutely love this place. I waited awhile to check this place out but when I did it was well worth the wait. The vibe and feel is on the side of like punk rock , so expect the music to be as such. I loved it all. And I'm not even a huge punk rock person. Definitely stands alone and very unique. There were two guys working both were really awesome. I was talking to one of the gentleman and he was telling us about the history and info about the place, I guess they also have shows there that are free, I gotta check that out for sure! They have new releases, some old vinyls new and used. I ended up finding some solid gold and it honestly was a steal, they also have a clothing section, sell a bunch of knick knacks, vinyl records and a small section of compact discs. Overall was bad ass, the business, the staff, the goods, everything was amazing. I've been a few times and each time holds a new story along with a fond memory for the keeps. Last but deff not least; ask em for some stickers they hook you up. If you know me that alone would have me loving the joint but with them it's just the cherry on top. INTRO: There aren't enough words in all the languages combined, for my description of this place. So, I will keep it simple. I like old school punk and new wave. This place has it and a lot of it but, the merchandise doesn't stop there. uh-uh. CLOTHING: They sell shirts with band names on them and shirts from the shop itself. Devo is a common theme here and I find no fault with that. INVENTORY: They have pins, buttons, vinyl, CDs, stickers, patches, shoes... so much stuff and it is well organized and displayed. This is definitely not a hoarder scenario as I am sure you will see things as I did... The building, built on a a small and quaint corner lot, is completely deceiving from the exterior because once you enter... you realize that it is quite spacious on the inside. Give a strong nod to whoever made up the floorplan. It works well, as it is conducive to shopping. NOTE: If you want to see Dr. Strange Records properly then, you will agree that this place is like Giligan's Island... "... A three hour tour..." LIONS? TIGERS? CLOSE...: They have a cat that roams the store (and you thought those felines were limited to quiet and dusty bookstores.... Nope! I can't wait to come back after my next deployment... Specialising in punk rock, you'd be hard pressed to find a better record store, even putting it up against Hollywood's Vinyl Fetish (or others) back in the day. Punk rock and everything related, including thrashcore, thrash and early "speed" metal are the themes and selection at this oddly located record shop. Need a bullet belt and classic motorcycle leather jacket to complete the counterculture look? They probably have what you need. Selection: Vinyl (yay) and CDs are the mainstay although the collection of the former outnumbered the latter. Pouring through revealed they have a lot of underground titles and obscure things. Now I know where a former neighbor likely acquired his ulta-rare Latin American punk stuff. Also in abundance were suspected bootlegs but generally those are CDs converted to "analog" and often sound squished with clipped dynamics at both ends of the spectrum. Case in point was the classic Glen Danzig band between The Misfits and self-titled group called Samhain. If only it was their better record, November Coming Fire! Nevertheless, the selection of clothing, hoodies, shoes and accessories is the best I've seen in the IE and similar to The Vinyl Solution in Huntington Beach for the punk preference. I'm sure to return because classic punk on vinyl is deficient in my admittedly humongous collection. read more

I have been to plenty of stores that claim to "just" focus on a particular genre, which is often code for an alphabetized section of reissue LPs. Not so at Dr. Strange. The whole store embodies the history of punk rock music. Any competent hunt for popular, essential, or rare punk tunes begins and ends at Dr. Strange. Scads upon scads of jet black vinyl crowd most of the wall and floor space at Dr. Strange. A punk initiate would easily be weirded out by the volumes and volumes of 12 inch, 45s, and CDs littered about Dr. Strange. What an onslaught of exquisite, vintage punk merchandise! Somewhere in the midst of the records one can spot the coiffured golden locks of Bill, the infamous owner and manager of all that is too eccentric for conventional society. This punk aficionado really knows how to organize a cooler than cool storefront. Everything in this store simply will not behave. The whole layout of the store is loud with rarified and kitschy punk patches, apparel, and artwork. A neon sign in the middle of the store really ties the whole space together better than a back patch ties together a rebellious jacket. I can't safety pin down what else makes Bill such an exceptional owner. So I suggest all serious and fatuous punks reading this review DIY. (Say hi to Jinx, the punk cat in black. Although my kids are grown I occasionally get them a Dr. Strange shirt and send it to them to remind them of their home town. Ordered a shirt on feb1.Was still processing on feb15.Thats ridiculous for one t shirt and I didn't even get an email saying please be patient your order will ship.So I emailed them and they refunded my money a few days later.At least they did that.I can get merch elsewhere but they messed up cause I had told a friend about them then had to msg her back saying be careful so it's ok.It could at least say it takes minimum 2 weeks to process an order plus ship time on their site, but nowhere does their page address shipping.Thats bad read more

This is an awesome store. Their prices are reasonable & some items were quite cheap. I got a cute handmade mini coffin for only $10 & a pre-owned t-shirt for $7. This is the first record store I've seen that sells pre-owned clothing for under $10. They also have public bathrooms & plenty of street parking. read more
