She only didn't finish hers because she eats like a bird, but I finished hers even after I'd inhaled mine. I came even describe the flavors (except to say the horseradish mixed in the potato top of the pot pie is inspired!) When I heard that Pennyroyal was an award winning dining experience, I came in with very high hopes. What I can say - The service was wonderful, my food was quite tasty, and the waiting area outside was absolutely delightful (I honestly would have preferred to dine there and in hindsight I should have expressed a preference to dine outside if I had known better). However, the driveway to enter the business parking lot has a HUGE pothole making it very hard nay impossible to navigate if there are any vehicles leaving the parking lot simultaneously. And the restaurant itself is adorable but VERY loud and cramped. I had my chair pushed in as far as I could comfortably do, but was constantly being bumped by servers and patrons trying to navigate to the single stall bathroom. When trying to leave there were dozens of cars parked on the side of the highway, blocking any visibility and making it hard to safely pull out of the driveway when time to leave. Now, the food was delightful and I found the mushrooms in particular a perfect blend of salty and woodsy, a light delicious addition to the meal. The sausage was exquisite and I could find myself craving them in the future. My rye bread was not as flavorful as I have come to expect when requesting rye bread and the slices were really quite thin. My wife also reported her hash was delicious. My friend enjoyed her croissant sandwich. And the soufflé pancake looked incredible, though arrived several minutes after the rest of the party's food so was scorching hot coming out of the oven while our food had cooled to room temperature. Don't waste your time going. There are so many scenic, beautiful restaurants in this area there's no reason to come to an establishment that sells one boiled egg sliced in half for $20. These are sadly the type of restaurants destroying the charm of cities like Saugatuck and hurting the reputation of Michigan as a state of kind, midwestern people. The owner, Melissa, who I spoke to about my $20 "large" platter that came with three small gerkins, a single egg, and some toast, she screamed at me in front of her entire restaurant calling me a "fucking brat" while I held my 4 month old baby. Her anger management issues really silenced the place. Of course she's so busy I don't think she cares if she loses business. But any restaurant that insults its diners with screaming profanity when simply asking questions doesn't deserve the privilege of your patronage. It is the restaurant's responsibility to be transparent about what each item on their menu consists of. I was called "literally insane" for not liking my choice - but it was not what was described to me. When I told her it wasn't what was described to me she screamed "I don't believe you!!" She wants to believe I was some evil customer who came up to say "hey I didn't like my food can I have a second meal for free?" because that narrative makes her feel better about herself - but that is NOT what happened. I walked in the door happily ready to pay and to tip well as always. The plate I received did not match the description of my order from her staff. Restaurant owners must account in their budget for human error. They must also remember they are part of the hospitality industry. You will find no hospitality here. My friends and I came here as our last stop on our little weekend trip and it was almost our biggest mistake. When we got here, we were very confused on how to order so the takeout people told us to go to the hostess at the front of the restaurant, so we did. Then when we got to the front, they said that the patio is takeout only so we had to go back. Whatever no big deal. We go to the back and we order. One of the baristas was not nice. My family and I always look forward to our annual trips to Saugatuck, and Penny Royale has historically been a must-visit highlight for us. We rave about this place to all of our friends every year because the food is superb and the service has always been excellent. Unfortunately, today's breakfast experience completely tarnished that reputation. We were so excited to be back and ordered a full breakfast, totaling over $75. I ordered the Penny Royale Breakfast, but when I tried the sausage, it just wasn't to my taste. I politely asked our waitress if I could swap the sausage for bacon instead. To my absolute shock, her immediate response was a flat "No!" She informed me that she would not swap it because "everyone likes our sausage here" and insisted it was just a "preference thing" because they use high-quality goods. She refused to take the sausage back or accommodate the swap, stating she could only put in a separate order for a side of bacon that we would have to pay extra for. In all my years of dining out, I have never experienced such rigid, dismissive customer service. For a restaurant we love so much, it was incredibly disheartening that the staff wouldn't accommodate a simple request to keep a loyal customer happy over a piece of breakfast meat. We ultimately chose not to press the issue further because we didn't want to completely ruin what had been a peaceful morning, but the interaction left a terrible taste in our mouths. We always tip generously in cash, but today we intentionally left a minimal tip of $2 on the credit card to reflect the pathetic service. It is incredibly disappointing when a place with so many things going for them forgets that hospitality and accommodating guests with such a small request is just so important Later the same day after posting my message above on Yelp the manager responds as you can see below. In response I'd just like to say that there is no need to justify poor customer service. And a customer should not feel bad for not liking something. What an absolute gem! Pennyroyal is a must visit if you're in the area. We drove by and it was popppin' so I was very curious! I found that Pennyroyal opened in 2019 (so wait, glad they made it!), is situated on 2 acres and helmed by Chef Melissa Corey, 2025 semi-finalist for the Best Chef in the Great Lakes! I was able to snag a last minute patio rezzie and had us a phenomenal dinner: *Poutine (house fries, cheese curds & gravy) - okay when you read Chef Melissa's creds...you know she's going to make a mean poutine. I've been to Duckfat in Portland, Maine and I was obsessed. She's clearly brought that know-how of INCREDIBLE Belgian style frites to Michigan and added a spin! *Snap Peas (snappy peas, radish, rampch): Rampch = Ramp+Ranch and it was delicious! I kept it to dip. But the snap peas were perfect and something nice and refreshing. *Shaved Vegetable Salad (fennel, pickled carrots, radish, sunflower seeds, lemon vinaigrette) - we opted for the smaller portion and it was plenty for the both of us to enjoy seconds and we were plenty full with the amount of food we ordered. Anyways, the salad was beautifully and generously dressed. Everything tasted so fresh and not a single wilty veg in sight. The pickled carrots were a nice surprising touch! *Pecan Crusted Walleye (roasted tomato & scallion, mashed potato, deauvilaise): the walleye was perfectly cooked and flaky. I loved that the roasted tomato scallion situation was actually served chilled and just slightly jammy - it was the perfect textural balance. *Campfire Trout (whole head-on rainbow trout, smoked prosciutto, lemon, green beans, almonds, herb butter): Rainbow trout and me have a complicated history haha I remember it as a kid in California that it was super fishy but maybe I was conflating that with the smells of bait and fishing. But, I'm pleased to share that Pennyroyal's was marvelous! The smoked prosciutto was GENIUS. I mean bacon with seafood is a great idea! *Profiterole (vanilla gelato, raspberry sauce, whip cream) - I didn't expect 3!! The last time I had a profiterole was at le Supreme in Detroit and this rivaled that. The raspberry sauce tasted like fresh muddled fruit - so summery and delightful! *Black Forest Chocolate Torte (chocolate cake, chocolate whip, cherry compote) - this was LOVELY - it gave like dirt cake vibes in the best way. I think this place may be a little too yuppy for me. But the parking lot and street were full of cars so I was intrigued. They have a little coffee shop, outdoor bar, small inside restaurant and small country store. Their little country store kind of reminds me of the Clarkson Farms store. (That show is awesome!) The items are all made locally but very expensive. They had produce, crackers and canned fish. For example a small can of fish (like tuna can size) was $18. There's plenty of places to sit down and eat in their garden-esque outdoor area. Very beautiful area and shaded. Looks like the south. We had a reservation and sat on the back patio area - we had between us, the burger which was fantastic, the pan seared trout and a gnocchi/ratatouille- started with a buratta caprese salad - everything was perfect. Had the busy bee cocktail (or two) and shared a bottle of orange skin contact wine - but the finale was the basque cake which has been added to my death row meal wish list. He refused to introduce himself and he was hostile, we waited 30 minutes to be greeted with a gruff server who kicked my purse twice. Favorite bite was on Friday - their xuixo (basically a filled churro) was something I'll be thinking about for the rest of my life. It was so dense in a good way. The filling was creamy and I've never had anything like it. Their cheese danish, pistachio croissant, and cinnamon roll are close contenders.
