Pennyroyal came highly recommended and I am really glad we got a chance to check it out. The best way I can describe it.....a very serene setting, but a chaotic dining atmosphere (on a weekend). It is just really, really busy. The wait for a table on the beautiful patio was over an hour. Also, they only have one restroom and there was a line for it the whole time we were there. The food was worth the wait, and we did not experience the service issues others have mentioned. If they have the whitefish sandwich on special - get it! What an absolute gem! Pennyroyal is a must visit if you're in the area. We drove by and it was popppin' so I was very curious! I found that Pennyroyal opened in 2019 (so wait, glad they made it!), is situated on 2 acres and helmed by Chef Melissa Corey, 2025 semi-finalist for the Best Chef in the Great Lakes! I was able to snag a last minute patio rezzie and had us a phenomenal dinner: *Poutine (house fries, cheese curds & gravy) - okay when you read Chef Melissa's creds...you know she's going to make a mean poutine. I've been to Duckfat in Portland, Maine and I was obsessed. She's clearly brought that know-how of INCREDIBLE Belgian style frites to Michigan and added a spin! *Snap Peas (snappy peas, radish, rampch): Rampch = Ramp+Ranch and it was delicious! I kept it to dip. But the snap peas were perfect and something nice and refreshing. *Shaved Vegetable Salad (fennel, pickled carrots, radish, sunflower seeds, lemon vinaigrette) - we opted for the smaller portion and it was plenty for the both of us to enjoy seconds and we were plenty full with the amount of food we ordered. Anyways, the salad was beautifully and generously dressed. Everything tasted so fresh and not a single wilty veg in sight. The pickled carrots were a nice surprising touch! *Pecan Crusted Walleye (roasted tomato & scallion, mashed potato, deauvilaise): the walleye was perfectly cooked and flaky. I loved that the roasted tomato scallion situation was actually served chilled and just slightly jammy - it was the perfect textural balance. *Campfire Trout (whole head-on rainbow trout, smoked prosciutto, lemon, green beans, almonds, herb butter): Rainbow trout and me have a complicated history haha I remember it as a kid in California that it was super fishy but maybe I was conflating that with the smells of bait and fishing. But, I'm pleased to share that Pennyroyal's was marvelous! The smoked prosciutto was GENIUS. I mean bacon with seafood is a great idea! *Profiterole (vanilla gelato, raspberry sauce, whip cream) - I didn't expect 3!! The last time I had a profiterole was at le Supreme in Detroit and this rivaled that. The raspberry sauce tasted like fresh muddled fruit - so summery and delightful! *Black Forest Chocolate Torte (chocolate cake, chocolate whip, cherry compote) - this was LOVELY - it gave like dirt cake vibes in the best way. We've been coming to this restaurant whenever we're in town, but this experience was enough to ensure we won't be back. Our reservation time came and went, and we weren't the only ones affected. Several other parties with reservations gave up and left because their tables weren't being honored. When we asked the owner for an update, we were met with a combative, passive-aggressive attitude and absolutely no apology or accountability. I've worked both front and back of house, and I understand that restaurants get busy. Delays happen. The difference is how you handle them. Good hospitality means acknowledging the inconvenience, apologizing sincerely, and finding a way to make guests feel valued--whether that's offering bread service, a cocktail, or simply communicating honestly. Instead, we were treated like we were unreasonable for expecting our reservation to mean something. When we were finally seated, our server was incredibly impolite. He refused to introduce himself and he was hostile, we waited 30 minutes to be greeted with a gruff server who kicked my purse twice. At that point, we decided to leave without ordering (leaving behind the drink I ordered and paid for at the bar while waiting). As we walked out, staff members were high-fiving, which only reinforced how little they cared about the guest experience. Someone should hand the owner a copy of Danny Meyer's Setting the Table. Hospitality isn't just serving food--it's making people feel welcome and respected. Unfortunately, that's exactly what's missing here. Those claims are simply false. No one expected free food or special treatment. We simply expected our reservation to be honored or, at the very least, a sincere apology and a professional response when it wasn't. Instead, we were met with hostility. What's most disappointing is that, rather than taking accountability, you've chosen to invent details about your guests. Judging by your reviews, this isn't an isolated incident. Your response only reinforces what so many others have already experienced. We left without ordering because of how we were treated. The facts are the facts, regardless of how you choose to portray them. As the owner said - find someplace else and we have plenty of recommendations ... They have a little coffee shop, outdoor bar, small inside restaurant and small country store. Their little country store kind of reminds me of the Clarkson Farms store. (That show is awesome!) The items are all made locally but very expensive. They had produce, crackers and canned fish. For example a small can of fish (like tuna can size) was $18. There's plenty of places to sit down and eat in their garden-esque outdoor area. Very beautiful area and shaded. Looks like the south. We bought a chocolate chip cookie and raspberry cornbread muffin. Didn't love either. 5/10. I bought a gift certificate for my brother and his wife. All I got when I bought it online was a receipt and the instruction to ask for the gift certificate when my brother arrived. He arrived and presented evidence, including a receipt for the purchase of the gift certificate. Despite all that evidence, they REFUSED to honor the gift certificate because, the chef said, he/she was too busy to try to figure it out. It is not like he can go back next week since he has traveled hundreds of miles to get there. I would NEVER trust these people so beware if you ever send them money online. I will make it a point never to go to that place and I am sure that will also apply to my extended family that is so angry that the gift was not honored. Hands down one of my favorite spots to hit up when I am in Michigan. I love their pastries! This time around they had blueberry pastries and they were all delicious! The quiche is served cold but even then it was really yummy!! Rating: Cheese danish: 9/10 it's different than the one I got last year but it's still really good! Blueberry cheese danish: 10/10 really flaky and just perfect! Quiche: 8.5/10 served cold but it's it really good flavor. It is on the sweet side not savory. It had spinach inside and was wonderful for breakfast after a long drive. Lemon blueberry croissant: 9.5/10 the blueberry jam mixed with the flakiness of the pastry paired so well! We were looking for a great experience for our last night in Michigan, but it ended up being a bit different than we had hoped. We were waiting for our table and decide to go to the outside bar for a pre-dinner beverage and had the pleasure of meeting the bartendress with the personality of a drill sergeant, she would bark answers to questions and proceeded to get snippy when we caller her out on it and then played the victim to the other person behind the bar! We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation on a Thursday night. It was a beautiful setting. And then it went steadily downhill from there. We stopped by the bar to order a cocktail and the bartender was very aggressive and dismissive with the fact that she didn't have the ingredients to make one of the requested cocktails. Our friend simply told her that her tone and delivery could use some work. At that point, she basically ignored us. My gin and tonic was the last drink made. I said thank you and she stared a hole through me. As we stood there and had our drinks, we heard a couple of staff members complaining that they had been there since 8:00 a.m. (at this point it was 7:30 at night). We were seated on time and our waiter was very nice. However, the chef in the kitchen was obnoxiously loud and upset. Apparently someone had sent back a fish sandwich three times and she was berating every staff member that she came in contact with. Kitchen staff were also ringing the hell out of the bell in the kitchen. There was obviously something going on with the staff. While we didn't have any issues with the food - it was just average at best, but because of the overall experience, the evening wound up being a huge disappointment for our friends, who live in Saugatuck, because they had been so excited about sharing this place with us. read more

We went here for a winter weekday lunch and it was very busy. It's a small place, but they do have a dog-friendly patio in the warmer months. We had the chowder, beet salad, and the white fish melt. We spent maybe 4 days in Saugatuck, and came here 3 separate times for breakfast and pastries. They have rotating pastries by day of week. Favorite bite was on Friday - their xuixo (basically a filled churro) was something I'll be thinking about for the rest of my life. It was so dense in a good way. The filling was creamy and I've never had anything like it. Their cheese danish, pistachio croissant, and cinnamon roll are close contenders. Savory highlights: the breakfast sandwich and their hot sauce were delicious. I would pass on the hash. Matcha latte was pretty good as well! You will wait if you get here after 9. Our server was a familiar face, he was our bartender at The Butler the day before. Started with a cinnamon roll made from croissant dough. Interesting but still very good and loaded with icing. What an amazing gem in Saugatuck! I have only been for brunch and it has never disappointed. The omelette is amazing. They prepare them in a French style and it is executed so well. I am so saddened I did not take photos of our amazing brunch! We selected the cafe on a random map search as we drove from Holland to St Joseph! We are so happy we tripped onto Pennyroyal and will be back! After risking our lives driving the pot hole ladened dirt road to park (hahahha), we were greeted with smiles right away and seated. Just a note...they do not take walk-ins for Dinner, so be sure to make a reservation ahead of time. They have an ample menu with a nice selection of fish, proteins and salads. Highly disappointed. The food was not spectacular as it was once and we were overcharged for the wine. Instead of re-ringing the check, they offered us free pastries. Since we didn't want to make more work for them, and we are locals, we said sure. Mind you, this was a buy one get the other free because they were old. This morning I heated up my chocolate croissant and sausage croissant. The sausage had a small piece of sausage in it and honestly tasted old. The chocolate croissant had literally 4 pieces in each corner of morsels!!!! Have you been to Paris?? Have you been to Meijers??
