Stopped at this eclectic place for a bite to eat for lunch. It's a coffee house, restaurant and gift shop all in one. There are two dining areas inside and outdoor dining in the back and in front as well. You order your food at the counter and they'll bring it to your table. My husband and I shared the pretzel bites to start. Puffy little pillows of goodness. I had a cheese flatbread and added kalamata olives. The pizza was excellent and had a great crust. My husband absolutely loved his sandwich. He ordered the Italian artisan sausage sandwich made with housemade sausage, ham, pepperoncini, roasted onion, spinach, tomato, provolone and Italian aioli. He called it "the best sandwich." We enjoyed this unique place and if ever back in the area, we would stop here again. read more

The food is always good. The drinks are usually tasty (not strong tho) and the service is great! We sat on the patio, little loud (on the main strip), but nice. Sitting there when the sun is low can cause brightness (umbrella are really high up and don't tilt) and heat, but if the umbrella is blocking, it is a nice spot read more

Stitch stopped by Root in Fennville and had a tasty-tasty breakfast treat--hippy hash with corned beef, served in a beautiful handmade clay dish that made it feel extra special. The food was delicious and full of flavor, and the coffee gave Stitch the perfect morning boost (zoom zoom!). Everything was reasonably priced, which made Stitch's wallet do a happy dance. There's limited outdoor seating, but plenty of cozy space inside to relax and enjoy. Stitch says Root is a lovely little spot for a satisfying start to the day! read more

Great food, nice woman taking lunch orders. Downside? I waited over 40 minutes for a sandwich to go that was actually sitting on the counter for god knows how long... To add to it all, the order was incomplete and there were no napkins in sight, no bag, no thanks for waiting. Why? There was no one helping the inexperienced woman on the counter who was clearly in the weeds. Tip: train your staff and teach them to move past waiting on people one by one when there is a long line and instead push through the orders for efficiency. Then break for a few to make the drinks to go with the placed food orders and repeat. Better yet, have more help at lunch or observant staff that can jump in to help, one making drinks, one processing orders. That would help a ton. Nice menu, good food, charming ambiance. Roots Café is the kind of place that makes you question your life choices--specifically, why you thought it was a good idea to eat there. Don't get me wrong, the food is delicious. The pancakes? Fluffy little clouds of joy. The empanadas? Practically a masterpiece. The BLT? A sandwich so well-executed it could run for office. But the staff? Well, they could not be less interested in your existence if they tried. And believe me, they are trying. Here's the kicker: we ordered beignets. Naturally, you think, "These are incredible, let's get some dipping sauce." Foolish us. They refused to bring it. Not like a "we forgot" situation--no, this was policy.We were informed we'd have to go pay'$1.50 at the counter before they would even consider bringing us the sauce. Is there a beignet sauce black market I'm unaware of? Are they rationing this stuff? What's next--pay-per-napkin? It's honestly remarkable how unfriendly they are, like they've made a sport out of it. For a place with food so good, the customer service is so bad, it's practically performance art. If they put as much effort into being pleasant as they do into making perfect empanadas, Roots would be an unstoppable force. As it stands, I'd rather eat pancakes in silence than deal with the hostility, which is saying something because, again, the food is great. But no amount of delicious beignets is worth the emotional damage. read more

We live in Detroit but stopped in here after spending the weekend in Allegan. The food was good or better than any spot like this in Detroit. We both got the hippy hash, my husband is vegetarian so he got it with tempeh, I got it with brisket and horseradish sauce. The pickled onions in it were a nice touch. To drink my husband got a cup of coffee (served in a handmade ceramic mug) and I got a can of kombuche brewed in Grand Rapids. You order at the counter but they bring the food out to you. Ours came out quick. After we started eating, a bunch of people showed up. Before we left I went up to order some begneits to go but because all those people had come in -- and I think they only had three people on staff -- it took about 15 minutes for them to be made. I understood what was going on so I wasn't mad but just a heads up if you're in a rush your service might be quick or you might have to wait a beat. The place has local arts and crafts that you can buy scattered around the shop. It wasn't all for me but I enjoyed perusing it while waiting for my beignets. If you're in the area you should at the very least stop in for your morning beverage, an afternoon local soda or an evening cocktail. We'll definitely stop back by when we're in the area. read more

This magical spot was such a delightful discovery. Thank you, Yelp for putting it on our radar. We did a harvest host stay at a nearby winery the night before, and decided for this overnight trip not to cook breakfast in the camper van and instead splurge on a nice meal out. My husband lived through the Yelp suggestions and there were lots of 4.5 star breakfast options within a 15 minute drive in any given direction. I'm so glad we settled on this spot. When you walk in, you feel like you've just stepped into your cool artsy aunt's house. There's all kinds of cozy, antique seating, and your eyes are overwhelmed with all the things to look at between the artistic and artisanal products for sale on the shelves and the cafe area in the rear. We had a really hard time narrowing down what we wanted to eat, because for such a small place, they have such a elaborate menu with so many different styles of food. We wound up getting a caramel apple crepe, which was prepared at an outdoor station behind the building, beignets with lemon thyme curd, and pork empanadas with some magical magical sauces. I would expect to have to go to three different restaurants to get each of these diverse kinds of cuisine so wonderfully prepared, but here it all happens under one roof. There's spillover seating in the art gallery next door, and my only tiny complaint would be that in order to see all the art and bougie food on the shelves, you feel like you're looming uncomfortably close to other folks dining in the restaurant. They were incredibly busy during our visit but seemed to handle the flow with complete grace. Never imagined I'd find a spot in fennville that I liked as much as the neighboring Salt of the Earth restaurant, but I have. And if you hit town at a time when Salt of the Earth is closed, you can grab a loaf of their incredible bread here. There is more kick-Ass cuisine in a square mile in Fennville then pretty much anywhere else on Earth. read more

If you are ever travelling around Fennville, MI and want to have a delicious artisan meal in a fantastic space served by friendly staff then stop into the Root Cafe'! In response to COVID they have added a new patio out back with 6 or 7 covered picnic tables. They plan to add heaters and use it in the fall too. I only know this because of the lovely chat I had with the owner who happened to be out back the day we were there. It's a great spot to have lunch and we will definitely be back!! read more

After a late start on Sunday my husband and I rolled into Fennville with the hopes of making it to Salt of the Earth before brunch wrapped. Alas, we missed it by 15 minutes, so we went into the Root instead and I'm SO glad we got there late because I might not have checked this awesome place out otherwise. The menu is small but it's good and cheap. I was feeling breakfasty so I went with the puffin plate. Puffins are a delightful mix of pancakes and muffins and they're served with an egg bake (a rectangle of eggs with some herbs), a nice helping of bacon, and two slices of watermelon for around $6. It was simple bt delicious. My husband got the breakfast sandwich which was eggs and cheese and bacon and such on a croissant. He also had great things to say about it. They also have a cooler full of interesting flavored waters (both sparkling and not) like the lemon ginger I tried and the lavender mint sparkling water my husband had. They also have a nice selection of pastries and sweets as well. Not sure if they only serve Uncommon Roasters coffee but they do have some and since we love Uncommon I was super psyched to get to enjoy some without having to run into Saugatuck. I got an iced coffee and they give you the option of regular ice cubes or coffee ice cubes. THAT RULES! Keeps your drink cool without diluting the caffeinated goodness. The space is cool, more rustic and earthy in design, and they're adjacent to a cool shop next door filled with locally made food stuffs (bread, pasta, etc) as well as art and home decor. Our barista was really lovely and very helpful. Across the board The Root is a fantastic experience and I definitely look forward to my next visit! read more

While vacationing in the Saugatuck area we stopped in at roots Café to get a couple small bites for our trip back home to Chicago. We ended up getting a flatbread and a sandwich and shared together my husband, myself and my daughter and I was blown away by the delicious food. The flatbread was absolutely amazing. The ordering situation is a little bit unique as it's inside a store front so we sat in the back patio area which was covered and they had heaters which was not necessary on that day but nonetheless it was a really good eating experience so if you're coming looking for tasty bite especially for lunchtime, this place is awesome!!! read more

We took a detour to come here, as it was recommended to us by our hotelier. They had a huge menu that was available all day long. We sat outside and our kids loved the board game selection. The Greek lentil salad was well worth the detour, as were the beignets. Yum! read more

This is a really nice and unique coffee shop located in downtown Fennville. They have many beautiful art items for purchase and the best beignets you can get in the state of Michigan. You can choose to sit either inside or out but I personally prefer sitting on their back patio. read more
