The burgers and fries are to die for and love the staff !!! Was visiting the Big Bend region, and had a horrible day after falling 7 feet into the Rio Grande river near Santa Elena Canyons. Got back to the hotel and needed a bite to eat. After getting my meal the burger and fries were fresh,seasoned nice, and cool staff that was hella friendly ! My wife and I were on a backend leg roundtrip from Hot Springs to Baton Rogue when we got hungry. I remembered the classic looking diner in Livonia LA and called to see if they were open at 8:00pm. We discovered they were open 24 hours a day so we stopped to eat at Penny's Diner. First impression was,"Wow! What a cool diner!" We joined one other diner and chose a booth with pink seats. There was only one person in the diner and she appeared to be all of 16 years. When we walked in she was on her IPhone!!! She came down and took our drink and food orders and left. She came back 3 minutes later with 2 waters and a milk and set them down in the middle of table. No straws, napkins or forks provided. I got up to ask for these items but she wasn't there; or was she? I happened to see a monitor and it showed her sitting on floor under the cash register with her IPhone. She was hiding and I asked my wife to look over the counter and verify this. She did and I was correct!!! While observing this young girl we saw her scratch her head/hair several times, her ear once and pull up her shirt and rub her stomach. My wife about fell out of the booth when the girl reached inside her pants to scratch her hip. Folks, you can't make this up. Saving factor was that every time she would come over she washed her hands. Eventually a middle aged woman came in and started cooking our food: breakfast for both of us! During this time, a guest from the attached hotel comes over complaining that the hotel clerk overcharged him and she had to fix the mistake. Eventually our order was delivered and it was good. The young girl set our plates down and returned to her phone but we needed strawberry jam for the toast. I had to get up and ask for it. I also had to ask the cook for refills since the waitress was too busy with her IPhone. While eating the cook and waitress got into a verbal dispute over the girl finishing her work before she left at 10:00pm. The cook walked off in a huff and the young waitress went back to her IPhone. When we finished, I had to go get the bill because the waitress was oblivious to us. When we left the young girl was the only employee in the diner and one other couple was eating. I felt sorry for them and glad to be leaving. To the owners of Penny's: you could have a good place if you had someone run it right and had customer service as a skill. If I could give this review no stars I would. This was an extremely frustrating experience. We arrived around 11:15 PM, ordered, and and almost an hour later had only received one of the meals (there were 6 of us) and a Cinnamon roll. There were only two or three other people in the diner, and absolutely no reason for it to be taking so long. The cook just kept talking and hanging out with the rest of the staff instead of making our meals. We finally left (again, almost an hour later) when we realized the cook had started making a to-go order for a guy that walked in instead of our food. I have no idea what the cook's problem with us was, but it was extremely upsetting for all of us. I would like to add that our waitress was really sweet and not responsible for the cook's action, but he needs to be FIRED. Also, just to clarify we STILL paid for the meal and cinnamon roll/ drinks we received. The entire situation was ridiculous. read more

Then I again decided ok I guess there's no waiting so went to order and the cashier asked someone else to help me they come and tell me they have to wrap silverware first before taking my my order. Finally she comes gets my order and then keeps telling me they don't have anything I wanted and I was trying to be polite and change and replace my food but she kept saying why don't I just take a $1 off the price?!! Really?? Then she comes back and says they didn't have what we agreed in and finally had hash browns she told me they didn't have them earlier. Zero stars if I could! Stopped into town for a couple days and thought a good old fashioned diner would be a great start to our trip. Not so much! Asked the waitress if the pies were made there since the menu stated fresh baked pies. She told us nothing is made there. She also explained that they used to years ago but not anymore. Everything is from frozen. There is nothing fresh! We sat at the counter where I watched the cook handle raw meat then rinse his hands with only water and a paper towel. Seriously! Can you say cross contamination? This guy is going to kill someone! If that wasn't enough, the burger patty he tossed on the grill was frozen! He grilled it for a while then transferred it to the flat top where he not once, not twice, not three times but four times cut into the burger and then smashed any juices left in the meat right out of it! I feel bad for whoever ordered this train wreck but it had to taste as dry as the dirt outside. This was a perfect display of how not to cook food! The sad part of it all was the place has all the tools to cook really great food. It would seem the owner is disconnected from what quality food should be. My recommendation would be to eat in with a frozen pizza rather than eat here. It's not a matter of if, it's when someone gets sick from the mishandling of raw foods. I realize it was a very busy weekend and they may have run out of a few things, but wouldn't you think it best to inform your customer as they are ordering pancakes that you're out of butter? Maybe give them wheat toast when they order wheat toast or when the waitress asks if you would like brown or country gravy to actually bring the brown gravy they chose? Maybe let the customer know that you're out of hash browns and not just serve them tater tots instead. If we wanted tater tots we would have gone to Sonic. With my meal I ordered the vegetable medley which was pictured on the menu and received a salad with the explanation, yep you guessed it...out of vegetables. Drink glasses went dry and took forever to get refilled, I finally got up and walked through the kitchen and filled my own tea glass, it was so refreshing. This is only half of what actually went wrong. You would be better off not stopping at Penny's Diner. Definitely will not be returning. BTW, no discount was offered to apologize. It's like the Waffle House of alpine.... it's got a 1950s kinda feel but they cook right in front of you so it's cool to talk to the cooks. It's really small so get there early I really like that it's 24 hours so you can get something no matter how early. read more

The NO meat hashbrown order had ham, got resistance when we asked them to remake it. The French toast and skillet were inedible. I'm use to Waffle House and glad that there is one here in this small town! Unlike the restaurants here in town, they service the whole menu all day and is open 24 hours 7 days a week. On the flip-side, the food is decent just like any other Waffle House. They do get pretty busy in the late nights during the weekends. read more

My husband and I stayed at the oak tree inn next door 2 nights and ate at penny's 3 times during our stay. We were happy with the food and the service and the price. We technically only payed for one meal the other two were complimentary but the prices were fair for the food. Yes some of their food is frozen or boxed but it's a good quick. Especially when it's the only 24 joe option in the area. They could use a little cleaning and updating but otherwise we would definitely go again. read more

** This is the first review I've ever felt the need to write ** A group of my friends made the 6 hour trek to Marfa Tx for my surprise engagement and 30th birthday celebration. It was a Saturday morning and We drove the 30 minutes back to alpine to take 4 of our friends to this cute diner (that we had eaten at 2 times before with no problems) There was a different staff there this day FOR SURE... and the young cook kept pushing back our order. In my opinion, if you can't serve a table of 6, you should not be open for business. We wait an hour and a half before we get our first 2 plates... which was either eaten or became cold before the next 2 people got their food, and so on. I ordered the same thing from a few days before... it wasn't nearly as good, and it had a hair in it ! That's when I went to ask for a manager, which I also have never felt the need to do before, and I was ignored by the cooks and answered by the sweet but extremely shy waitress that the manger wasn't there. We waited over 2 hours before everyone had their food. The manager showed up some time before then but never felt the need to check on us or follow up with my issue. By the time our group FINALLY left, we walked up to the "manager" running the cash register and stated our issue... she just apologized and said she was trying to hire more cooks. But there was no way were were going to pay for this food or service. The young cook, in a fit, finally said he would pay for it. DONE. Never going back. read more

Truthfully, this place deserves 4.5 stars. After a lovely evening stay the last room available at the Oak Tree Inn, we enjoyed our complimentary diner breakfast. Not only was the atmosphere friendly and bustling, but the diner as a whole was warm and aptly decorated in true '50s diner fashion. The staff was cordial and welcoming. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, and the assortment of breakfast meats was far from dissapointing. Crispy and delightful, the bacon was one of the meal's many highlights. The coffee was fresh, and we were impressed with the quality of hashbrowns considering how busy the restaurant was. They had a slew of condiments available at our disposal, which complimented the toast, and the eggs came perfectly over easy with the yolk runny and sumptous. Don't make your relationship with Penny's a one night stand, keep going back for more of Penny's Diner and the Oak Tree Inn, it's a combination that just works. read more

Saw this place when we arrived inn town on our travels this year. Told each other "we need to try that place out. Looks like a great throwback diner. They have to have good food!" Damn were we wrong. After back country traveling for 2 days at Big Bend we got back into Alpine, dropped our supplies off at the rv park Lost Alaskan ( which is a great park) and cruised on over to Pennys. I ordered the Chicken fried steak with onion rings and fries wife ordered the omelet and daughter ordered pancakes with bacon. I was looking over the menue and was thinking about ordering a chocolate malt also. After 35 minutes of waiting we finally got our food brought to us by the cook not waiter. One. At. A. Time. About 5 minutes in between. Mine had been sitting up on the counter for about 5 minutes before my daughters and wife's were brought out. We then had to go up to the front and get our own silverware and napkins ketchup and hotsauce. I told my wife if mines cold I'm returning it. It wasn't cold but it was nowhere close to hot. I was Sooo hungry I wolfed it down. Not good at all. My daughter ate her bacon but only cut up her pancakes. My wife ate hers. I told my daughter to eat her pancakes but refused. I tried a bite and they were worse than microwaved pancakes. Needless to say I refused to donate anymore of my money for the malt. They never came back to ask how everything was and if we needed refills. We paid our $35 for crap and walked outside where I made the joke " I bet I'll be crapping all over in about 20. My wife laughed as she suggested we go to sonic to get a couple shakes to wash the nasty taste out of of mouths as I happily agreed to. So we are at Sonic. Order our shakes. Then it hits. Not even 20 minutes. Deep gut pain. We get our drinks and haul ass to the camp. I never had yelp until now. Downloaded and wrote this whole review while crapping that nasty stuff out! We ate hear 5 or 6 years ago and it was fantastic. This time was big disappointment. Only one booth had customer. ALL the rest were empty and had not been cleared off. Had to Waite for them to clean one for us. The waitress was not friendly at all not even a smile. Ordered, I ordered a salad also expecting it before the main meal arrived. Instead, the waitress came back to the table to take our order, forgetting she already had. Finally brought our main dishes, and still no salad. After asking she went to get it. About half through the meal she finnally brought it. Watching the cook, he did not have on gloves, never washed his hands, using his hands exclusively to handle the food. He dropped his knife on the floor, picked it up wiped it with a rag and continued on. The whole place was dirty needed a thorough cleaning. We will never go back! read more

Ate breakfast every morning at Penny's for three days, one morning the bacon was a little too crisp. Planning a return trip soon and will stay at Oak Tree Inn and eat breakfast at Penny's.
