Great place in Green River! We were staying at Hampton Inn and tried this little vintage diner for our late dinner. The homemade potato chips were superb! Crispy hot goodness. My kiddo had the chicken sandwich which comes with bacon on toasted bun - he love it. "10 out of 10" in his book. My hubby had the chicken fried steak and he enjoyed it very much and so did I. The mashed potatoes were real and very tasty. The gravy was great. I had the rocking Ruben which was tasty but my hubbies meal was better. We also ordered the old fashion milkshakes. This place is great. Kudos to the cook lady, she was hassling on the grill and serving at the tables when it got busy. We are coming back for breakfast in the am. read more

I discovered, after reading several reviews of this little diner, that I was looking for the "grumpy" early morning waitress when we entered at 7am for a quick bite before hitting the road. Well, either she wasn't there, or I chose not to see a sour disposition and just focus on starting out her day right. I smiled big as we entered and she returned it. Her service was exemplary, the food was delicious. I would like to encourage people to look beyond a frown, one doesn't know what has happened in that person's life in the last five minutes, last hour, the day before. The coffee was great, the scramble I had was full of crisp green pepper, onion, flavorful mushrooms, chunks of crispy bacon and the eggs were perfectly done. I even got my picture taken with Debbie, the server, and I'm sure that both of our days were better for the encounter. Actually, one should know that customers of the Oak Tree Inn do NOT get vouchers for free food any longer. They stopped doing this three weeks before we visited, figures! :) read more

The food is pretty good. The French toast is perfect, it is crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The bacon is okay, it tasted a little microwaved though. The pancakes are fluffy and pretty good. The chicken tenders, eggs, and sausage are also pretty good choices. The drinks were not so great though. The water tasted like metal and the ice tea wasn't strong at all. The service is good but could be better. The staff is very nice and friendly but the service is a little slow even though we were the only ones there. It is nicely decorated and the music isn't too loud and fits the theme of the restaurant. The tables and seats are also very clean. We were a little on edge about this place after reading the reviews but it was a nice place to stop for dinner after a long day of driving. read more

Penny's dinner is an awesome palace to stop and grab a bite off the freeway. The place is very customer friendly with the older style atmosphere. Orders and drinks were taken very quickly. The food was definatly unique and tasted awesome The cons: expect to wait a while. The waiting time is deffinatly a stop and relax to eat. Not quick like McDonald's. This was one of the worse experiences of my eating life. Service was not good at all and neither was the food. They were more concerned about getting glasses of water out then the hot food. This lead to cold food coming to us. Almost everything was frozen, all the way down to the biscuits and pie. We were told that the chips were "homemade" but they were frozen as well. I also saw a meat for another customers meal was microwaved. Still can't believe that. My Philly Cheese Steak was made with what seemed to be hamburger meat and not the typical meat. It is very unfortunate for this place that I could see the kitchen and what was going on. It's also unfortunate for them that I used to own a sports bar and know how food service should be done. We were warned that this place is hit or miss and it was definitely a miss. I would rather go to McDonalds 2+ miles down the road then to ever go here again. read more

Great little diner. Friendly staff and regulars. Decent food. Fast. The food is decent. The servers are very friendly and back each other up (asking if you need more coffee). I think the coffee was fine. Depending where you sit, there are nice views out the window If you are staying at the Oak Tree Inn, they give you a coupon for breakfast or credit towards any other meal. It is conveniently close to the Lincoln Highway (I-80) Exit #89. Convenient return to the freeway and easy truck or trailer parking behind the Sinclair gas station next door. I've stopped at various locations of Penny's Diner on my different drives out west. It's become a fun tradition in my family! It's a nice retro diner style, with classic food. I'm a creature of habit here, though. I always go for a BLT and a chocolate milkshake! They have really nice, thick cut bacon for their huge sandwich. They (usually) give you the extra milkshake in the blender cup, so it's perfect for sharing! and so rich! The service isn't always the fastest, but I never mind cause it's a good break from driving. It's a fun family spot that I have many fond memories of! read more

We were pleasantly surprised to find this place right next to the hotel. I took my 9 year old son in at 11pm at night for a late, late dinner. He enjoyed the scrambled eggs and a waffle and I got an omelette We sat right at the bar and really enjoyed our meals. The service was good, the counter tops were clean and it was peaceful. The food was delicious and the employees were amazing. I had the Classic breakfast- two eggs, bacon, and toast. My mom had the Cinnamon roll. Unfortunately, there was a mix up and my food went to a another table and the cinnamon roll was no where to be found. The manager on duty (I assume) came and checked on us. We didn't mind- I'm a waitress and have mixed up tables. After a short while my food came out, and it looked fabulous. The bacon looked so good my mom had some while she waited and we ordered an extra side- it was wonderfully crispy without being overdone! My breakfast was cooked perfectly and the cinnamon roll ended up being delicious and soft. It was definitely worth the wait! All in all this restaurant has yummy food, quick service, and a staff that supports each other. read more

The atmosphere is charming. 50's deco and music. Im struggling to find something nice to say because the older gal waitress is not nice. I had to get up to ask for more coffee. We are here for breakfast. There are only two other tables. Hope the food us good. Pretty disappointed so far. Well the food was better than the service but not by much. Had to cut the pancakes with a knife. Meal is basically free (Oak Tree Inn - thank you). And free is for me, I guess. Just a cute little diner in the middle of sand cliff, railroad and cattle country. Waitresses call you hon and sweety, super nice. Got the veggie burrito,our waitress tami was sweet enough to point out the green chili that goes on top of the burrito had pork in it, so was able to get it on the side. Decent diner food. read more

Part of a small regional chain (4-5 other diners sprinkled around the western US.) Fun diner atmosphere, reliable diner food. The first time I ate here was in 2008 during a cross-country move because my husband, who had driven out weeks earlier recommended it. AND because there was a place for me to park my 26 foot rental truck with attached car trailer nearby. On that visit, I ate a burger, fries and shake, and was very happy. Friendly atmosphere, cheerful service, nice vibe. I said I would stop again next time I was driving through. Five years later, I stopped again, this time with hubby. I got a burger again; he ordered some of the best huevos rancheros either of us have ever tasted--breakfast is served all day. The eggs came with hash browns and some kind of delicious gravy with carnitas in it. Wow. One reviewer griped about plastic plates, but on both visits, we were served on china. A really charming 50's style diner. I am afraid it really goes downhill from there. We were traveling cross country and we driving through at lunchtime and decided to stop. It really looked promising. They were really really busy so I took that as a good sign as well. We were able to snag stools at the counter, pulled out some menus and . . . . . . . nothing. A waitress finally came up and took just our drink orders, got those right away, and . . . . . . . we waited. OK they were busy. We really weren't in a hurry and figured we could watch the food preparation. I ordered my usual BLT (advertised as Classic) my husband ordered the fish and chips special. And then we sat and watched the show. Ok, more like a train wreck. The person I assume was the head chef, was trying to fix meals and train a new, very inexperienced young man. We watched pretty much in horror as our meals were fixed and mixed and redone and confused. Each item was handled about 15 times in the process. Fries were put on the plate at least 5 minutes before the sandwich was added; bacon was picked off the grill by hand, set down, picked up again, put on a plate, picked up, put back on the grill while the bread was toasted and spread with mayo and then plopped back on top of a piece of sliced tomato and shredded lettuce. And then it sat on the prep area. much the same process took place with the breaded fish, sliced potatoes all dumped in the fryer together. The meals were all finally put together and . . . . . . they waited. He kept saying, "Who are these for?" and kept being told "The people at the counter" We finally piped up and asked him to please give us our meals. Needless to say, by the time we got them, the fries were cold. The BLT was ho-hum the bacon soggy by this point and overcooked. And shredded lettuce??? A sacrilege! The Fish really resembled Schwaans breaded cod fillets and the chips were not cooked all the way through. The food was mediocre and the service nonexistent. I debated about only giving them one star, but the diner itself is really cute and they were hopelessly understaffed and overwhelmed by the large number of people all wanting to be fed at the same time. read more

It's been a couple of years since I've been to Green River. But I'm back to staying over 2 or 3 nights a week. I've been pleasantly surprised with Penny's Diner as of late. I'm not sure what changed, but the food is tremendously better. The service has been top notch. If it's breakfast time, go see Jenny. She's an amazing sweetheart that will tend to your needs well. We're passing through on our way to Grand Teton/Yellowstone and this diner is very convenient to our hotel. We ordered the Triple Decker Club sandwiches (big so there are leftovers) and, of course, the kid had chicken nuggets and fries. All of it very good and fresh out of the kitchen. read more
