Going into the rental, I prepared myself for the worst experience of a lifetime, but for all of the…read moreinconveniences I suffered, I was compensated, so in the end, I suppose I got what I paid for. First off, Penske starts off with higher rates, but is the only company where you can negotiate (price matching) and that gives discounts such as Triple A discounts over the phone. Budget and U-Haul do not offer this, so Penske will probably always come out to the cheapest. Also, Penske gives you unlimited miles, so you don't have to worry about accidentally taking detours. But here's where the bad stuff happened: 1. The only way that Penske would have been price-competitive was with the Triple A discount. I personally did not have a card, but I am covered under my family's plan. I didn't know if this was going to cut it, however, so I called Penske to make sure. The person on the phone said it would be ok to bring my dad's card, as long as we had road-side assistance. But the person at Chelsea rental said that I had to have the card under my name so that she could swipe it. So she did not apply this insurance. 2. Chelsea Rental, the contractor that houses Penske, did not check the back of the truck before we drove it away. So I drove the truck all the way back to the UWS. Only to open it up and discover a bunch of crap in the back. There were about 20 dollies, and hundreds of pounds of packaging material. So I had to drive it all the way back to Chelsea and have them take it all out. This delayed the trip by about an hour and a half. Here are the redeeming things: 1. The Penske truck we got was brand new. This probably meant the gas mileage was pretty good. compared to other older trucks of the same size. 2. They compensated me for the "bad stuff" and refunded $75 dollars off of the total rental. Other things to know driving to Boston: You can make it on a full tank of gas. You will just need to fill it up right before you turn it in, and it will be about $60 dollars in gas money. I opted for the $50 dollar insurance, but I really did not need it. Waze will tell you a way to get there that is shortest, but keep on I-95 as you exit New York, as this is the road without little tunnels that will scrape the top of your truck off. Once you get into CT, you can take 84 to 91 (or 91 to 84 or something like that... (go through Hartford)

I don't want to blow up the spot of the guy who helped me out, but lets just say I got a bit of leeway on some things. On top of the friendly and generous attitude, I got a brand-spanking new truck with no damage and an honest fuel gauge. Speaking of dishonest fuel gauges, Chelsea U-Haul can suck it. Not having a hellish rental experience was an extremely refreshing change, and having a great rental experience was a complete surprise.

This was an okay experience overall. I had a reservation for a truck rental for a student film, and…read morethe checkout process itself was pretty smooth -- I was able to do most of it on my phone. There was a line when I arrived, but the employee working did a great job moving through everyone efficiently. There was some confusion with their internal hand‑off process, which was frustrating and slowed things down, but eventually I got my truck. The vehicle was clean and ran smoothly. The only downside was that the lock on the back was broken, so I had to buy my own -- hopefully that's been replaced by now. The return process, however, was super easy. I just dropped the truck off and left, and my final bill came through shortly after. Overall, a decent experience with a few bumps.

Convenient location in Manhattan right off the West Side Hwy. Pick up was simple - walked in and showed my info and the van was ready right away. Drop off is easy as well. Staff at the pick up desk quite friendly for an early Sunday am. Few things to note - they add a $15.95 facility fee on top of everything for renting from the Chelsea location (seems absurd to me). Might want to refill gas on your own. I drove 14 miles and let them refill the gas. They charged me for 2 gallons but it's nearly impossible to have used that much gas going that short distance. I rented a cargo van, which looks small in the pictures, but when I arrived, they had graciously upgraded me to a larger version which was a little hard to drive through the streets of New York City.

We were scammed out of $59- BEWARE!…read more We rented a van from the Bensonhurst location, for a move just across town. After returning the van, we arrived home and I was able to view my receipt that had been emailed to me. I was surprised to see that they had charged me for almost 45 miles. As suggested by U-Haul, I had taken a photo of the odometer that morning, before we left the lot. The photo I initially took showed a higher starting mileage than claimed by the U-Haul receipt. According to my odometer photo and the ending mileage, we had only traveled around 11 miles, not the nearly 45 miles that they charged us for. The woman helping us that morning was very nice, so I called to tell her that their mileage calculation was inaccurate. I thought that she would be able to resolve the issue, especially since we had a time-stamped photo of the odometer, taken before we left the lot. Instead, she told me that she had sent a link via text for us to upload the photos showing the condition of the van and the odometer, before we left the lot. She said that uploading the photos before we left would have been the only way to prove my claim. There was no such text on either of our phones, and we were never informed that we were supposed to upload photos anywhere. We were only advised to take photos, which we did. If a franchise does not make enough money renting vehicles, they should increase the fees, not cheat their customers. I would have happily paid the $59, if it was an honest charge. Customers should be aware that they are scammers.

WARNING: SERIOUS RAT INFESTATION!!…read more Rented unit #4903 for 3 months. Opened it to find 20+ LIVE RATS had taken over. Video proof below. Everything contaminated with droppings and urine. Multiple items destroyed. Clearly a facility-wide issue as numerous other complaints have been reported. Management's response? Blamed ME for having one sealed food bag in storage and denied all responsibility. Other customers here have mentioned similar rat problems. Health hazard concerns: - Active rodent infestation in multiple units - Potential hantavirus exposure - Facility clearly has inadequate pest control I've filed complaints with NYC Health Department and 311. Currently working on compensation for destroyed belongings. If you're currently storing here: CHECK YOUR UNIT NOW and document everything. If considering this location: Look elsewhere unless you like rap poop and piss on your t-shirts and mattresses. Will update if they resolve this, but so far completely unresponsive to the serious health risks at their facility.
