Had a cake from people's bakery.... is was so good and moist. It is a must try. So so good.

This bakery is a staple in the Southwest Detroit community! I've gone to this bakery since I was a little girl. And even when I moved away, when I would come back to visit family, I would always make sure to stop by the bakery to order a Cream Puff and an individual size Sweet Potato Pie. Today I decided to stop by the bakery, as I haven't been in some time. I wanted to get my usual. Small size Sweet Potato Pie, and I also ordered a Chocolate Icing Cupcake. The elderly lady that was helping me, she wasn't too happy that I took a picture of the menu (As my thoughts were to post it so people could review the menu and the prices). As the lady bagged my order, she asked me was there a reason that I took a picture. I tried to explain that I enjoy reviewing different places, such as restaurants and bakeries, etc. But she still didn't seem very happy about my answer and even asked "What's a Yelp", lol. So, unfortunately, I will not post pictures to respect her issue with taking pictures. But everything was still good from how I remember the baked goods tasting. Oh wow great news People's Bakery on Fort Street has been sold and reopened. What a fantastic way to celebrate 313 Day and National Pi Day. The brothers from Alabama decided a year ago to close n retire as Covid took over the world. Yep a whole year , new owners so pleasant and friendly have big plans. Once everything open up 100 percent and everyone got the vaccine. They gonna open full inside dining room with great food. For now just a walk up window in the front door. This cute bakery has been run by its current owners for 39 years. Prior to that, another family ran a bakery here for 45 years. There has been a bakery in this location for a very long time. I stopped here with a coworker today and it was a pleasant break from our fieldwork out in the sun. My coworker got a carmel cupcake that she said was very good, and I could see how fluffy it was. I got a German chocolate cupcake, also good. They also had rolls, small sweet potato and lemon pies, fritters, donuts, and cronuts. Their menu is somewhat small, but there were definitely other offerings--I was too hungry to note them all. There was milk, bottled water, and soda pop to drink in the cooler. The coffee had run out earlier in the day (It was about 1:30pm), but in the morning there is coffee to be had. Credit card and EBT are accepted for orders totaling at least $5. Otherwise, bring cash. There is a small counter with a few stools if you want to eat there, though I suspect most people carry out. The family running the bakery was very friendly, and this place had a charming old fashioned vibe that has become all too rare these days. The prices are right, too--our cupcakes were a dollar apiece. Next time I'm in this area, I will be stopping by to try a mini pie. read more

Charming spot. I was hearing about this place for years before I actually came in. They have some of the best donuts in town-- glazed donuts, glazed donut "sticks" (which are more like rectangular donuts than sticks), cinnamon donuts, and a bunch of stuff I couldn't afford the caloric intake to try. I went here 2 weeks ago. I have tried to go a few times based on reviews but I had missed them because of them being closed. The neighborhood is spotty (I usually have a 4 year old and 6 year old in tow) but the prices were good, the little tarts looked tasty and the donuts were tasty. The varieties are very limited like an old bakery -ie no sprinkles, just fritters, custard,lemon, etc) The atmosphere reminded me of something down south.... quaint and peaceful. I don't know that I would make a run to go back because it isn't convenient for me but it was good :) read more

I have been to about 20 or so top Yelp rated bakeries in the Detroit metro area. If I have to go on flavor alone, this place beats out almost all of them. Only one or two other bakeries are on par for sheer tastiness. Dollar for dollar the value at People's is unbeatable. read more

Love this bakery. Have shopped here for over 20 years buying for myself and the job. Ordered large sweet potatoe pies some with double crust and the large apple pie for a crowd. This is one of those Detroit area gems that I have driven past a million times before stopping in. It's a quaint little place, like stepping back in time. This place has been around for yeeeears and still has the same decor and setup and best of all the same recipe's. It really does have that old school 1950's feel to it that gives it a unique appeal compared to a lot of other bakeries. They have a large variety of things like standard and mini pies (sweet potato, lemon, apple, pecan, egg custard) as well as cupcakes, cookies, donuts, cream puffs, cronuts and cinnamon rolls. Oh and fresh dinner rolls. The pies are a little pricey but you get what you pay for which is a fresh and tasty dessert free of preservatives and chemicals. Same with the cakes. OMG! Are they still there? We used to visit this place when they were called "Cephus". My hubby grew up in the neighborhood. Luv Luv Luv their delicious cupcakes and the sweet potato pies are the best. Sometimes, the regular cakes can be a little dry, but maybe it was just an off day for cakes. We have moved away to FL, but I'd be willing to order for reasonable shipping. LOL. I truly miss the place. A true treasure of SW Detroit. Peoples Brother are the best around these parts. The bakery is not open on Mondays or Sundays and its best to get there when they open it you want something right out of the oven. If you wait until 5pm you won't find much left! read more
