I made a appt with this pep boys to get a new car battery. In what was actually not their fault, they were very behind and I had to wait close to two hours. i did feel that potentially they were priced a lot higher than necessary when I paid However, neither of these things were truly the issue. The next day after I got my battery replaced my car started making a grinding noise when I started it and when idling. My car is still under warranty so I didn't want to take it anywhere but the service at the dealership so I wouldn't have to pay. as it turns out, pep boys didn't put my battery in correctly and messed up part of the air filter causing it to "grind" against the fans. This luckily DIDNT do damage to the fans but easily could I have! I am very disappointed with the situation! will not be returning read more

I'd give a Zero. I had long day after being stranded in a parking lot for most of the day. Towed to the nearest facility with a tire. Which took most of the day. This was the shop I was referred to. Stay AWAY. I can only recap my experience. I gave them my car. I locked the door. They were only supposed to put new tires on. They were closing. So I had to leave it over night. I picked it up the next day. Thought all was in order. I did notice they left my car unlocked when I approached. Just thought they rushed with the clean up. Things were spilled on the pavement from the inside. Which come to find out I had items stolen from it. After speaking with the manager, I find out leave your car unlocked over night without adequate cameras. They don't care much for details for protecting your property, doubt their work is much different. read more

Terrible service all around, rude workers, over priced repairs and negligent maintenance

They are not the fastest shop in town because they are always busy. Here's the thing though - they are busy because they are good and people come back! I've been taking my cars to Pep Boys Irondale for years because they do excellent work and their prices are extremely competitive. The front counter/service manager Joel is personable, straight forward and easy to deal with. The technicians I have spoken with were polite and pleasant. Untrustworthy, incompetent, and liars. The last several visits indicated high turnover, extended wait times, and less thought and care put into my vehicle. They've only had one positive Yelp review since September of last year, so I should've seen trouble brewing. I definitely didn't expect this. I had to come back Saturday morning for a gauge light they should've checked two weeks prior during an oil change. When I called three hours after dropping it off, they still hadn't looked at it. An hour later they tell me it'll be a whole new alternator, battery, and belt. Ironically, the first two were less than 2 years old, and installed at a...wait for it...Pep Boys in Mobile, AL. I wrote a review about that experience as well. Check it out. The repairs came to $804, but Robert said "I have a 15% discount here that I can apply to the repairs." I said "Ok, so somewhere in the $670-680 range?", and he confirmed that, "Yes, the 15% discount would be in the $670-680 range." This was the same conversation in which I stated that I had somewhere to be later and I wouldn't be able to make it back by the time they closed (7pm). I asked if they had after hours pickup, or if they could hide the keys on my car somewhere. Robert said they could hide them in my fuel cap, but I explained that I don't have another set of keys to get into the car to open that cap and retrieve them... I recommended putting the keys on the back left tire, and Robert said that would be no problem. Four hours later I get a call from Ryan, the closing service manager, telling me they'd finished with the work and I can come pick the car up. I'm 20 miles away without a car, so I explain very clearly, again, that I'll need to do an after hours pickup. Ryan confirms. I paid over the phone and asked him to leave the keys on the back left tire. Well, when I get there I realize two things. My keys are nowhere to be found (by me and two friends), and they charged me the full $804 for the work. My apartment and office keys are on that key chain, meaning I can't drop my computer off at the office and I have to find somewhere else to sleep that night. Thank god I grabbed my charger out of the car before I left. So, after toting my backpack around downtown Birmingham all night, I Uber to my sister's house, wake up Sunday morning, and get a ride over to Pep Boys, only to discover that they locked my keys in my car, as I specifically asked them not to do...twice. I then have to sit there for an hour waiting for a locksmith to arrive and get my keys out of my car. Then, when I mention the overcharge, Robert says "Well, I left Ryan very specific instructions on the keys and the discount." He offered me a free oil change and I just laughed and said "Thanks man, but I'm never coming here again." He said "Well, this is all I can do." Today I called to ask about the overcharge. I spoke to Ryan, who said that Robert hadn't told him anything about the discount or the keys. He said "I'm sorry but I can't refund you an amount you've already paid, all I can do is offer you discounts going forward." I said "Ryan, you don't get it, I'm not coming back there bc you and Robert have screwed everything up so badly, why would I?" and he responded "Ok then it sounds like our business is finished." I made an appointment to have an air conditioning coolant line replaced. This is something they had actually looked at and patched a year before. My car was in the system when I called for the appointment. The patch they put on before was great for many months, but came off when I took my car to a manufacturer dealer with an alternator belt problem. The car dealer quoted me about $770 to fix the air conditioner hose. I waited and due to the recent intense heat, decided to take it back to this Pepboys where they diagnosed and patched it last year. Even though I told them the problem, they ran a $50.35 AC system leak evaluation in order to give me an estimate for repair. Okay, maybe that was necessary, but it wasn't discussed with me ahead of time. Then they quoted me over $900 to fix the problem, much higher than the manufacturer estimate. Not really sure what the $12.57 "miscellaneous shop supplies" charge was for. I did like the free comprehensive inspection. But I do have a little front light that is broken and a cracked windshield and they weren't mentioned in the inspection report. The 10% off coupon was helpful. So I went in for an oil change and an estimate for the air conditioner problem which I described to them ahead of time and it cost me $191.90 with taxes and the $20.35 discount. I brought my vehicle in to have two tires put on and a rim at 2pm. I explained to the manager that one of the lugs was stripped which he said that he could get off after leaving my car their and coming back at 6pm that still hadn't looked at my vehicle. Mind you I have a rim that is severely cracked and a bad tire. I didn't get notified until 8pm that he couldn't fix my vehicle. read more

They always perform a courtesy inspection ( if you're a reward card member) and they will explain if something is amiss with your vehicle. Stellar service. I was annoying and had a ton of questions because I've been duped before but they handled everyone of them extremely professional. I didn't feel like I was being condescended at all like you feel at other places.. These are guys are straight forward, no hidden fees kind of place. I have tried to get an oil change here on more than one occasion. They force you to take an appointment. As I sit here writing this I see one employee sitting down and two others standing outside doing nothing for the general manager to tell me he doesn't have the time to change my oil as nearly his whole staff is doing absolutely nothing. Only reason I gave this place a star is to write a review. Otherwise, they would have not gotten one at all. I'm a young African American woman and I definitely felt gender and racial bias towards me. Chris (manager) and two other white males talked down to me and disrespected me in front of many customers. Once a white woman came in with a similar complaint and they took care of her without hesitation. Short of one year I had to have my car worked one for the SAME problem 5 different times and that's from 4 different locations. The reason I went to 4 different location is because I was stuck at different parts of the city and could not drive my car. The men at this location told me it was my fault because I should have drove it to them regardless. I also had my car towed twice in one day because it wasn't fixed like I was told. Thank goodness it didn't break down on the interstate and waited until I go to a safe exit. I would never recommend anyone of any color and definitely not a woman to go there. I was told that changing the hub bearings on one side of the front of my truck would take 3 hours. I called them in 4 hours to ask if my truck was finished. They told me it would take about 3 1/3 more hours. I also thought $600 for changing out some hub bearings was much more than I expected. read more
