I've visited Pep Boys before when I lived in Chicago, but when visiting a friend in the Philly area, a tire kept coming up flat every morning. We called around first thing on a Saturday morning and no one was working or accepting appointments on a reasonable basis, except Pep Boys. They told us to come around 5pm, and since we had a full brand new tire for them to put on, they said they would check it out. NGL, the waiting area leaves a lot to be desired, but customer service said they would do their best to see if our new tire would work and do their best in an hour. We strolled over to the Amazon grocery, but there's not much else here on foot, came back to wait, and new tire was put on like a charm and very affordable! Thank you, Pep Boys. read more

Scheduled oil change and tire rotation for 3pm dropped car off at 2:30 and went to the gym. Came back around 5 to grab my keys. Was told she couldn't find my keys and told me to wait in the lounge. After 20 min I went back up to ask about my keys just to be told they have my car up now and are doing the oil change. What's the point of an appointment if you aren't going to start it at or near that time?? They ended up not charging me for a tire rotation. I went for a simple tire change and ended up getting up charged for stuff I didn't need. online it said the price was going to be just under $200 but on the phone they said it was going to be almost $500. On Saturday I visited the Haverford location for my annual inspection. They found that there was something wrong with my front right wheel bearing, but did not have the equipment handle it. I had a hard time finding anywhere else that handled press in press out wheel bearings, but I called this location, got an answer, and scheduling an appointment was a breeze. They took good care of me, and kept me in the loop throughout the whole process. The price I paid was less than the estimate, which is always nice. read more

"We don't have you on the schedule. You made the appointment online. Corporate don't know what they're doing. You'll have to leave it for a couple of hours". "I'll come back...What time?" "Leave it or we can't help you." "I'm a mile away" "Leave it or it doesn't get done". It's happened to me before at this PB's. Read the other reviews and you'll see a pattern. Set up an oil change appointment for a week and half in advance at 08:00 am. Once I got there they said no mechanic will be in until 10:00 am; even though the person I set my appointment up with said it will only at 20-30 min and I'd be out by 08:45 am. At the start on check in the rep started trying to add on tire changes, tire rotations, brakes, rotors and anything else he could think of. I asked if they could look at my tire since I was pretty sure a nail was in it, After I declined all he keeps pressing for tire sales since, "there a really good deal going on right now." And I guess since I told them about the nail. Finally they took my car and did a "complimentary Vehicle Inspection" in which they "found" multiple things wrong with my vehicle. Including you guessed it needing new tires. I had just gotten my vehicle inspected less than 2 months before this visit and the whole vehicle passed, so they are just making bs up to up charges people. If you think about going here, please don't. Find a reputable home mechanic, these big companies are just trying to make money off you. These guys are brutal, I took my car to their shop to have inspected. I do the honorable thing and mention that my car was showing a cat efficiency code. So I'm already charged the $100 dollar diag and they confirm the cat code. And tell me I need a new catalytic converter. Which cost me $1300. What they failed to tell me was that my flex pipe was rotted out and had a hole in it and that's why it was throwing a code. I took it to another shop that showed the pipe to me and asked me why Pep Boys changed my cat and missed my pipe being in this condition and then stated I more than likely just needed to fix the pipe. So I call pep boys show them the pipe and they agree to a partial refund and never sent me a check. This was in May and its in July. What can go wrong if you need to balance the wheels/tires? Turns out -- a lot, if you go to Pep Boys in Broomall. I have two sets of tires for my 2013 Camaro: one performance set for summer, and an all season tires for the rest of the year. Both sets are exact manufacturer recommended size, both mounted on two identical OEM recommended wheels. The set is staggered -- 10 in wheels in the front, 11 in wheels in the back. Tires are the same size on both axles. The all season tires are about 2 years old, and I maybe have 15k miles on them. They were fine when I removed them in June this year. Since it's the fall again, I swapped the sets about a month ago to all season tires, obviously, and felt a small vibration on the steering wheel in the range of 55-75 mph speeds on a highway. I thought that the wheels needed a little balancing, so I stopped by Pep Boys and dropped off the car. About 45 minutes later I get a call from PB, saying they couldn't balance the wheels. I was told that the wheels were so bad, they couldn't balance them at all without multiple ounces of weights. Hm, I thought, it shouldn't be that bad, but perhaps I really do need to replace the tires, who knows. But whatever, I'll come and pick up the car, and then we'll see. About 10 minutes later I get another call from PB telling me the front wheel locked up ton the brake caliper. What? That shouldn't happen, after all I drove the car normally to the PB. The guy told me they will investigate what's happening. Another 15 minutes later I receive one more call, -- and I was told that to Pep Boys' surprise they have learnt that my wheels are in different size! So they installed a wider rear wheel to the front axle, and of course it didn't fit there. But who cares, right? They even tried to drive the car this way! So yes, naturally they have scratched a coilover, and chipped a brake caliper. Yup, they had no idea that the wheels were staggered, even though I specified my exact car model in their database. Apparently their car database does not contain this information, so I wonder what else they do not know about your cars? Oh, and also they scratched up the inner part of the rim while installing a ton of weights but I'll get to that later. A technician then spent about 15 minutes over the phone arguing with me that I have the wrong size wheels and tires on my car, even though I know for a fact that it's 100% exact OEM wheel size and the only recommended tire size for both axles. At some point I just gave up and decided to pick up the car, and solve this issue somewhere else. But on the way home I immediately felt that the car has become completely undriveable above 40miles -- huge vibration in the steering wheel first and then the whole car would shake like crazy. Honestly I wasn't sure I'd make it home even though it's less than 5 miles from Pep Boys. But luckily I've made it home, took off the front wheel, removed the weights installed by Pep Boys, and installed my own eights in the spots where previous weight were - boom, the car is back to some minor vibration on highway speeds. Thanks for making things worse, Pep Boys! Hey, at least they didn't charge me for this BS. Nevermind the scratched wheel, caliper and a coilover, of course. And as a cherry on top of that when I got home I couldn't find a security lug nut key in my console. At first I thought Pep Boys forgot to put it back in the car, but it's actually worse! They left the lug nut secret key in the nut on a wheel, and didn't tell me about it! So I drove home with it in the wheel, and it's just a miracle it wasn't lost, and stayed in the nut. Otherwise it would be another adventure to remove it and buy another set of lug nuts. So yes, thanks for nothing and for making things worse, Pep Boys. I gave you a chance to show you are worth considering as a service, and you blew it so hard, that I will stay away from Pep Boys forever. And it was just a simple wheel balancing procedure, I can't even imagine how you can screw up anything bigger than that. read more

I was amazed by the service I received today. In a world of selfishness and dishonesty, the employees at pepboys were friendly, knowledgeable, and honest. I had the pleasure of working with Jen and Ken for a last-minute issue with my car. They not only took me in right away, but treated me kindly, with respect, and was able to fix my car immediately. I am so upset by the service provided or let's say LACK of service that this place provided. We were in town for my baby girl's first birthday party and noticed our car was exuding an awful smell from the engine. The morning of the party, as soon as they opened, we dropped off the car asking the person to help us out. They never called us back and so we ended up having to ask favors and borrow other people's cars to finish running errands for the party. We finally called them before the party started and they told us they were still trying to finish doing a maintenance check and that we would be able to pick up at closing time. When we finally picked up the car, they did absolutely nothing to the car. The car still smelled plus THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. They were closing up and my husband had to bang on the front door for several minutes before someone came out. How was he supposed to drive the car back home? The car was in worse shape than when we had dropped it off. What did they do with it all day?!?! No clue... do yourselves a favor and avoid this place. Take the time to find another auto place bc this place will only sabotage your situation even more. read more

This place took advantage of my mother, she went in for her tire pressure light, a 2 second job, an hour later & a charge of $30..... they couldnt even tell her what they did, apparently they balanced her tires. Nope, never again This was handled with a phone call to corporate. I booked an appointment online oil change for the 5:30pm time slot. I arrived at 5:15 and was told they don't schedule appointments within an hour and a half of the service center closing. I did receive confirmation from the online booking system stating my appointment was confirmed. I asked if I could pay to get my coolant at least topped off. Guy said no. I couldn't even buy it from the store because they closed before the posted hours. No customer service. A zero rating should be an option. read more

I've patronized various locations of this chain for many years. The size of their locations can vary significantly and this is one of the larger versions. That's great news as they have tens of thousands of little things that you might need to keep your wheels running and looking spiffy. If I have a need to buy something like a bulb, or some kind of interior accessory, or wiper blades, this is where I go. They rarely fail me for this and the prices are competitive. These folks also service cars and for that they are not very good. Over the years I tried them two or three times and finally given up. As others have mentioned the wait times are outrageous and the mechanics often seem to be standing around or chatting or doing anything but working on cars. It would be a little more bearable if there was a restaurant/bar or fast food joint in this plaza but alas there is not. They get three stars form me for their retail store and two stars for their service operation. read more

This is about my Sept. 17, 2021 visit to Pep Boys. I had an Avis rental with a leaking tire.The good part is in the end they did the work well. Also they were courteous,. Although often they were being courteous was while they were giving me misinformation about why it was taking hours. I was there forever until they realized the tire couldn't be fixed and would have to be replaced. Then there was a long delay because they didn't remember which Avis branch I had told them I rented the car from. They needed this information to call to authorize the new tire. It would have saved me time and worry about Avis covering the cost if they had simply asked me again. In the end I had to leave because they were taking so long. So it took two trips and around three hours to replace one leaking tire! read more

Pep Boys gets a star because I have to put one and I'll give them credit for the convenient hours it's open. Otherwise, don't waste your money. Every time I have gone there, I foolishly have spent hundreds getting one thing or the other fixed. In August, I went for my inspection, ended up spending about $900 on something to make sure it would pass inspection. Wonderful, great. A month goes by and a light goes on about my tire pressure sensor not working and I know I need an oil change too. I end up bringing it to a local mom and pop shop because I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on whatever Pep boys is going to tell me. After giving my car the oil change, they ask me who inspected my car? Because the frame was rotting and I should have never passed because my car was basically a death trap if I were to have gotten in an accident. They said whoever did it, should be in a lot of trouble. Fast forward a week and I'm car shopping and the dealership basically says the same thing. Do not go to Pep Boys ever except maybe an oil change except they'll probably find something wrong and charge you a bunch. They allowed my car to pass when apparently it was incredibly dangerous for me to be driving. I will not ever be taking my car there again. read more

This place is terrible. I had an appointment for an oil change at noon and waited at the store. At 1:15, I asked the service desk person Akeem about the status of my car. He disappeared into the service bay and then returned and said it was "up next". I asked, "why have an appointment for noon if you're not going to be able to honor it?" I was planning on waiting on site for my car since it shouldn't take too long, but when I got there I was told their online system allows for over-booking and it would be a 3 hour wait. Trust the 1-star reviews. It's hard to believe that a store that is part of a large chain can have such lousy customer service and stay in business. I went in to purchase windshield wiper blades. First, the catalogs for the part numbers are gone. Apparently, they want you to do all the work online at home and just show up, grab the parts, and hand them money. There are no parts numbers here, so I go up to a runty little guy with thinning gray hair and a horrible attitude at one of the CS desks and stand there for a full minute without him acknowledging I was standing there. I said, "Hi. I need some wiper blades." He said -- no exaggeration -- "I'm in the middle of something. You'll have to wait." So I stand and watch him looking at something on the computer screen for two more minutes before he says, "This is going to be a while." Now I'm ticked, and my tone is obvious. "Is there some other way I can get the part numbers or the blades?" "You can go over there." He points to an elderly lady. She is pleasant, and I'm pleasant in return. She looks up the parts, gets the blades, and I buy them. After a half hour trying to replace the blades (one of which I discover is missing an adaptor), I realized she sold me the wrong blades for my vehicle. One is fully 2" shorter than it should be. I have shopped here for my auto parts off and on for 15 years. I'll never step foot back in this store as long as it employs inconsiderate, petty jackasses and people who don't know which parts to pull. read more

I took my car in to check for an unexpected noise (I did not have an appointment). I left the car and they diagnosed it by afternoon and then I decided to leave it overnight for state inspection the following day. I had trouble with my insurance and registration cards but the staff at pep boys worked with me.There also was some miscommunication about work being done on the car but the assistant manager (think his name is Jerome) was very professional and gave the best customer service. I've gone hear for at least 15 years. I had them at about 4 stars, but they need help on their customer service and interaction. By biggest complaint is their handling of used oil. They expect it to take 1hour to dump my used oil, so I left my container asking to get it back. Well I never got it back. Another update: 3 out of 4 times in the past year, "their oil bins are full" they won't accept used oil but they'll change it from my car. They'll let me buy the oil, filters, etc. but we're not going to help you unless you get your car serviced so we can find things wrong with it... If there was another competing store close, you'd better I'd switch. Prove me wrong. read more

Utterly terrible customer service. Not only unfriendly but just blatantly rude. Do not go to this pep boys. Not only are they rude, they thought something was electrically wrong with the car, when really they just couldn't figure out how to change a simple light bulb to fix the turn signal. Took the car elsewhere and they fixed it instantly. We asked, can we have a refund since you did not fix the issue you claimed to fix. They said, "no we are charging you for our time." Which seems unfair because when you are charged for something you expect it to be fixed right? As some of the other reviews have stated, these mechanics take advantage of people. Recently went in for alignment, did wait a few hours but ultimately delivered my vehicle on time. Waiting room is literally a corner of the store but at least they had water for you. Why have 7:30PM appointments available on the website if you don't like having them? The man at the front desk was absurdly rude and gave me attitude as soon as I walked in for an oil change saying that they don't like 7:30 appointments even though it is an option on the website. But Apparently they have some unwritten rule that 7:00 is the cut off. When I was leaving I tried to be nice an apologize for making a late appointment (even though it's an available time on the website) and he says "well ya know now" Only Reason I gave it two stars was because the mechanics were nice guys. Simple review is that I was trying to buy a car battery on the 4th of July 2012 and I got there about 15 minutes early and called this store around 45 minutes ahead of time and sure enough I got an answer on the phone and she (Merilyn) opened up 15 minutes to let me in and buy this battery for my dead car. I installed the battery in my car and it worked great. It just shows people who care about other people and understand tight situations, If you go to this pep boys, go to Merilyn's register, she will for sure, make sure your well taken care of. read more

RIP OFF. HORRIBLE SERVICE. So I brought my car in for State Inspection, which Pep Boys apparently thinks is a license to steal. They failed all 4 disc rotors on my car. They couldn't fail the brake pads because I put new pads on in the last month, so they decided to fail the rotors since I didn't replace them when I did the pads, because they didn't need replacing. Then they tell me they want $650 dollars to replace the rotors. WHAT? The rotors are $40 dollars apiece and it takes 15 minutes a wheel to replace them. Even less time if you already have the vehicle up on a lift with all four wheels removed, which they did. Brakes are the #1 scam for these places because they are cheap and easy for Pep Boys to replace and they overcharge a fortune for them because most people don't know how to replace them or how easy it is, so Pep Boys takes advantage of those poor folks. Here's something I bet you didn't know. Pep Boys marks up the price of their own parts when servicing your vehicle. Pep Boys sells the rotors for $40 apiece, but charges $80 apiece for them if they install them. Seems fair, right? OH NO. they also want to charge $275 in labor to install them. So they mark up to double the price of their own parts, and then charge labor to install them. Scumbags. But, whatever, I needed to get the car inspected. My son needs to take it back to college this weekend. So I took the car home and bought rotors at Autozone (turns out Pep Boys didn't even have them in stock). I installed them on all 4 wheels in an hour in my driveway. $160 total cost and an hour of work instead of $650. Pity the person who can't do this themselves and is at the mercy of these scammers. Then I bring it back to them. Pa state inspection says they need to verify repairs have been made and put the sticker on it. They tell me they can't do anything for me today, that since the car "left the facility" it needs a complete re-inspection and they don't have time to do that today. So, in other words if you don't pay their rip-off prices and get it repaired by them then you're screwed. You're screwed because you have to find ANOTHER day to kill to get your car inspected again. I'm sure if I bring it back there they will find something they "missed the first time" and try and rip me off again, restarting the process. Also, they take appointments but apparently they don't know what that means. It certainly doesn't mean they work on your car at that time when you bring it in. I had an appointment and they told me to leave the car and they inspected it 4 hours later. So to get it "re-inspected" I would have to do that again. I have 4 cars and have literally spent thousands of dollars at Pep Boys on parts and service (they can check my rewards card). For that, I got no sympathy or help. I was told to get in the back of the line again and they couldn't have cared less that my son is now driving back to college in an uninspected car, and they would do nothing to help me, when all they had to do was verify the repair had been made and put a sticker on the car. The people in the store obviously don't care about my situation or have any interest in keeping my business. I assume that reflects a corporate culture of squeezing money out of customers at all costs, and if you lose a few along the way then "oh well". Especially me since I don't appear to be their target demographic (I'm not a sucker). I hope Pep Boys values the $55 I gave them for my inspection. They were the last of my dollars they will ever get. I will get the car re-inspected but it won't be at Pep Boys. I'll pay someone else to do the inspection again, and write off my Pep Boys experience as a $55 lesson learned. read more
