I needed an oil change and for a newly purchased used car and my mechanic is closed on Sat. The service was $100. A little pricey, but ok. In the waiting area I overheard a worker (on speakerphone) tell a cust his battery was "low" and needed replacing. The cust said install a good one. The worker told him that battery would cost $560+ it would be extra because it was not in stock. The customer was shocked and apprehensive. I decided to get my inspection done. After the inspector comes to the small waiting area filled with customers to tell a man his car failed inspection for wipers and tires, I decided NOT to get my car inspected. (After reading some other reviews, evidently it's common to have tires and wipers fail at this business. I told both workers. While I'm waiting the guy who failed was discussing the price for new tires. $1100+ for 4, not including alignment. He repeatedly was ignored when he told the guy he wanted a tire price "down the middle". He ended up only getting 2 tires for $860+. Later, the inspector comes to the full waiting area to tell ME my brakes are 1 and 2 points from a failure. She literal was trying to embarrass or frighten me into getting my brakes done. Even though I told her NOT to inspect my car she took it upon herself to do it anyway? Complimentary or not, this is NOT how you do things. I thanked her for info and continued waiting. Then, the young guy behind the counter is now off the phone and yells across the the room, "Why I'm not getting my brakes done? "What was I going to do?" Maybe he thought I had no options? I told him I would be taking my car to my own mechanic....I don't like these types of overpriced, hustling or intimidating tactics and I will not be returning. read more

Bad attitude by staff. I walked in looking for valve stem caps. I asked if they had any. My response, "If it's not on display we don't have any".. I said, Pep Boys doesn't have valve stem caps? With a condescending/ monotone robotic response, we're service only, go up the street 15 mins to the Broomall/Marple store.. Normally I wouldn't make a big deal out of this but how hard Is it to be polite and show some customer service? I Just moved here, I had no clue PEP BOYS has retail and service only locations. Maybe a big sign out front that says service only location would be a good idea.. God forbid some poor soul goes in the store and ask a question and or asks confused.. Pep Boys tires installation I went into Pep Boys in Havertown, Pa to get my tires installations. They changed my tires and broke my sensor, did not put a Wheel nut, and tire caps back on my car. I tried to complaint to corporate and they never got back to me. The guy at the desk said it's his word against mine that he put them on and that he broke the sensor. He through a broken senor at me then he went to the back door and walked to my car and put caps on. He did nothing about the senor and the one Wheel Nut. I really didn't want to write this but unfortunately this issue hasn't gone away as promised by the employees. I brought my car in for an oil change on July 2nd and when I went to pick it up they said there was an issue with the breaks. No problem, I tell them to fix it as I was taking my car to move across the country in 2 days. Better they caught it now than later. I pick up my car and my breaks are squeaking incredibly loud. I was concerned so I brought it in again the next day. They said they only heard minimal noise when they test drove it, and if anything it's just because the break pads had dust on them and it should go away on its own. We'll now it's been over 3 months and they are squeaking louder than ever. The issue has not gone away and has gotten 100 times worse and louder. It's so bad I have strangers stop me and tell me to get my breaks checked immediately (surprise, I already did). One extra star because the employees are always kind, but unfortunately I cannot give any more. Save your time and mental energy and go to someone local who will take care of your vehicle. My check engine light came on after I had a message stating my oil pressure was low. So, of course I had an oil change by a third party. Took my truck in to have the codes read from the engine light. MAP sensor. Ok, so we ordered the part from the dealer. I was never told my car was ready until 5 minutes before closing. Ok fine, I can pick it up in the morning. Set an appointment for a few days from then so they have time to get the part in. Go for my appointment a few days later and the part is not in. They never called to tell me. Finally had the part replaced today. Customer service needs some revamping but I acknowledge that staffing is low. read more

I have always had a very positive experience with the Pep Boys on West Chester Pike in Havertown. They explain things very clearly and want to help fix whatever ails your car. I find them very professional. Also I need to mention that they have a towing service that tows your car to them for $49.99 AND if you apply for a Rewards card, towing is only $25.99. EXCELLENT customer service! I had work done to my 2004 Volvo and they helped walk me thru the whole process. I'm physically disabled so they took their time..were very patient and Ben got me Lyft ride home and back (because it was an all day job) Every single employee offered me help and assistance..and it was appreciated. This place is very dishonest! I went into the Havertown location today around 6-6:30pm to have my tires plugged. The tech took over an hour to tell me my tires cannot be plugged and told me I would have to buy a new tire. Not just 1 tire, he said since I'm replacing 1 tire. I would have to get the other tire replaced also. I FaceTime my cousin who owns a mechanic shop way across town. Showed him the location of the screw on the tires which was directly in the middle of the tires, NOT on the side tread. The tech was irritated that I called for a second opinion. He gave me my keys & told me I did not need to check out. Long story short I did get my tires plugged at a different mechanic shop. Visited for an oil change (as I have with this company for many years), told them I needed it to be Synethetic. After waiting 2 hours (with an appointment), they told me the cost was $20ishh. I told them the synthetic was always more & asked if it was conventional. He confirmed they did conventional, after I told them Synthetic, and then the staff told me I was wrong and my VW didn't need synthetic oil. He went as far as to fake looking up a manual and told me it said conventional. After I proved him wrong, they said they would change it. Less than 10 minutes later... they said my car was changed ready and the oil was changed to synthetic. They didn't charge me & didn't put anything in the computer since I was getting it for free. I knew there was no way the second oil change was completed in less than 10 minutes, but there was no way I would know. Months later I was at VW having my car looked at and it was determined the performance was from conventional oil and my oil was very overfilled. Had my paperwork from VW & made a complaint with corporate but the manager never returned any of my calls. He called me one time and I immediately called back within a minute, and another employee told me he wasn't there. Never trusting them again. read more

I understand they're short staffed so I'm not going to complain about the wait. It's the lack of skill the mechanics have who can't seem to fix a tire. These people will rip you off. I knew what was wrong with my vehicle and expected to pay around $450, they gave me a list of "things to fix" which totaled over $2600. They told me things like "your rear diff is leaking and low on fluid". When the truth was I had checked myself 2 days earlier for the first time in 11 months and it was completely fine. When I saw that on their list, I realized "these people are trying to F me". Do not trust these people at all. We will NOT be going back. My husband went today for an oil change and a tire rotation. To check that the work was done, he put small marks on each front tire with a Sharpie. Needless to say, when they were done with his car, the marked tires were still up front. What else have they been lying about, I wonder? The manager and "Les" were pleasant to talk to and work it. Although the price I saw online was cheaper, they worked with me to give me the best price for my tires. Hoping to come here to let them service my tires, and brakes worth hundreds of dollars. I first called in for a apt, Christopher Brash said he's all booked and would have to wait an hr. I check online there was available spots. I set a apt for 12 and they called me me and said it'll be a hr wait so it be better to come at 2 so the wait would be 15 mins. When I came in he said it be an hr. I had a problem with that so they took my car in asap. This altercation came out disrespecting to me the way he responded, 300 lb man staring down on me, "this is like a doctors visit. You have to wait...". I wanted to get my tires rotated, and a brake check which is free if you have a rewards card which I do. He told me it'll be $15 dollars for the brake check after I told him I had rewards card. What a scam, false advertisement! After returning the keys, I just left. I'll just replace my brakes & rotors somewhere else. On top of that, the new staff is horrible, I hear them arguing at each other while in the waiting room. UPDATE: (DAY AFTER) I just got my service done at the Dealership to diagnose the squeaking noise I had. I just saved my self money (hard to believe)! Pep boys told me I NEEDED a rotor replacement + brake pads replaced. I wanted the top of the line Ankebonos so the total came up to 400-500$ (not sure exactly). The dealership said my break pads were low, and the squeaking noise was just a indication. NO ROTOR REPLACEMENT REQUIRED. They replaced it with OEM parts, and then resurfaced my rotors totaling 306$ + free loaner vehicle all day. $306 OEM part (dealer) vs $400-500 Akebonos (Pepboys- Havertown)? I'm not sure but I'm assuming their business is slow and they need to lie about services people need or don't have the proper tool to resurface. p.s. Went to Pep Boys in Havertown (West Chester Pike). They kept the car for 4 days to do a minor repair (replace an alternator belt.) On the 4th day, the car was supposed to be done, so I called to get a status - but there was no answer. I ended up calling the store 22 times that day (every 15 minutes for about 4 hours), and no one ever answered. Finally, I drove over to the store to find out what was going on. When I asked why they didn't answer the phone all day they told me I had a "d*ck attitude." They said if you want to status information, you need to come to the store in-person to ask. When I asked the employee his name, he said he didn't have to give me that information. I asked him for the name of the manager - he said he was the manager. Then they presented a bill that was MUCH higher than they told me when they took the job. The bill had entries on it that the "manager" could not explain - but he told me that if I didn't pay he wouldn't give me my key. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I will just be another reviewer that says do not go here. Long story short they did a "brake inspection" and brakes failed a month later. Apparently it's not even a true inspection (it's a "visual inspection") Not sure why you have to pay for it then. What a rip off. They missed that the inside pad had fallen off. Went over paperwork and it was shown things weren't even rated correctly (score go 7 when they supposedly they use yellow red or good). Area manager was terrible to talk to. Called to yell and tell us our complaint was unwarranted before he even checked the cameras or spoke to the employees which was totally unprofessional. Go somewhere else. The "service" at this place is terrible and the older guy behind the desk is rude. I called at 9 am explaining that my driver's side door handle will not open from the outside and a polite guy took the details and told me I could come in at any time. I asked for 4:30 and he said yes, that works well. I get there at 4:30 and explain again about the door handle only for the guy at the desk to roll his eyes and say, "Wait, wait, so what's up with the car?" I sensed the annoyed tone but tried to remain polite and explained again what was wrong with the handle after noting that I had, in fact, made an appointment. Without moving from the desk or looking at my car he gets even more annoyed and tells me that this would be an all day thing. When I asked about Saturday hours he shot back "I don't do that kind of work on Saturdays." I'm not entirely sure what "that kind of work" is since again, he never actually left the building to look at my car. Then he blurts out that it's easily going to cost me 100 bucks just to open it up and look at it. I never mentioned a price that I could or could not pay, but by his tone he assumed that I was not ok with that. I have been to Pep Boys several times in the past and have an account...I was aware it would likely be costly but I was more than willing to pay. Again though, I was confused by how he came to that amount without even looking at my car. When I noted that I would have to make another appointment because I could not just leave my car with them today, he then added that the guy who would have worked on something like that was not in today. So this entire conversation was frustrating and a waste of time because someone could have given me this information when I called at 9 AM. Overall, it was pretty clear that they just did not want my business and I will not return to any Pep Boys as I found this experience so ridiculous and the men that worked at the counter completely dismissive of me. read more

Unfortunately I had a bad experience at this same Pep Boys. It was so horrific that I had to end up taking my 8 yr old PT Cruiser to the dealership & put out $1,200 to get the problem fixed. The manager Ed is still a nice guy but the experience was unimaginable. I went back 3 times for a problem that they said would be fixed each time. They never fixed it. I've been in this store on multiple occasions for everything from a container of windshield washer fluid, ice scraper, oil change (which was more than quoted, and not because it's synthetic oil), wiper blades, etc. I've been in the customer service profession for quite a long time, so I know when I'm intruding on someone's day, based upon how I'm spoken to, body language and tone. It shouldn't be too much longer before this store closes. UPDATE 2./18: So I get a reply from the owner "Pep B", (yeah right) and he suggests that I do more work by writing to an email address. Well Mr. Pep B, when a customer feels as I do about your company, you do not ask them to do something like this. Instead, you invite them to contact you directly. You provide a real name, and a real number. Or you ask the customer for their direct contact information, and a convenient time for them to take your call. Total rip off , took my elderly neighbors car in for oil change and state inspection, it was a 2015 nissan versa with 12500 miles on it, i preinspected this car myself( i work at a fleet shop), i pulled all wheels and recorded brake pad and shoe measurements, checked suspension, lamps, tires ,etc...., I dropped car off at 8 am and at 10 am i got a call saying car would not pass inspection, they told me it needed front brakes and rotors, along with wiper blades, i went down tobthe pe boys store and explained to them that i was a mechanic with all my ase's and that the front psds measured 8/32nds on a bonded pad and that the wiper blades were replaced a week before, i told them if they dont pass it i was going to the state police, the mechanic and service writer huddled and then came to me and said they are going to pass it but it would need pads shortly and the blades were "just passable", i know that the front pads have at least 10,000 miles left on them, my shop i work at does only fleets or i would of took it there. Long story short, go somewhere you can trust the mechanic. read more
