One star may seem a bit harsh, but let me explain. Years ago, I worked at a PepBoys in AZ. I'm well aware of their business practices, as well as how things are done in the shop. This specific location failed to meet the expectations I developed when I was working in the industry. I took my car in for a tire rotation, an oil change, and a starting/charging system eval as the car was cranking slowly. I can only *assume* the tire rotation and oil change were done correctly based on how poorly the safety inspection and start/charging eval were done... I was told my starting/charging system was in good shape and that my battery passed a load test just fine, but a few days later my car failed to crank/start on three separate attempts. It eventually started, but when I got home I opened the hood and IMMEDIATELY noticed that my alternator belt is in very poor condition (deep length-wise cracks indicating it may fail soon and is likely slipping). Immediately meaning it was the first thing I noticed because it's IMPOSSIBLE to miss. I was never told about this when I picked my car up... A bad/missing alternator belt renders the charging system in your car completely useless as you're not running the alternator (and thus not charging the battery) without it! Fail number one. My wife took the car a few days later, and I noticed a few fluid spots on the garage floor. These turned out to be coolant. I figured a few drops wasn't a huge issue so I'd keep an eye on it, but a day later I parked the car in the garage and noticed a strong smell of hot coolant, so I opened the hood and poked around. Turns out there's no coolant in my overflow tank at all like there should be, and there's a significant amount of crystalized/dried coolant on the bottom of my engine block, indicating a leak that's likely been ongoing for some time. This, too, was not mentioned to me upon picking up my car. Fail number two. So if I can't trust this shop to do the simplest of tasks (inform me of an obvious coolant leak, and notice a critical component in my charging system is faulty), how can I trust them to do other, more important, work like the rear brake job they suggested? If they can't be thorough enough to catch a bad belt and a glaringly obvious coolant leak, I'm sure as hell not letting them touch my brakes! After supporting PepBoys for years after working there myself, I'll be moving on to another shop that can handle my vehicles maintenance in a way that I can trust to protect my and my family's safety and that respects my time and hard-earned money. I went in for a diagnostic check on a acceleration issue and was informed aI needed a complete engine replacement. Was told my timing chain was bad ( just changed 3 years ago about 12,000 miles) among other issues. Estimate around $3-4,000.00 to change motors. I knew was total BS!! I changed two solenoids and throttle body . $200.00. Plus the $110 I was charged for a racket of a diagnostic check!!! Don't go there even for a oil change you'll be lucky to be able to drive your car away. And yes I contacted customer service. NO response read more

Just moved here and don't really know any local mechanic spots yet. Pep boys was as good as any for a basic oil change and tire rotation as I didn't have time to do it myself with busy work schedule. Called and called and nobody answered phone, I understand being short staffed so I Made online appt. for next morning. Dropped my truck off they were already running 2 hours behind which blew my day. Literally 4+ hours for a oil change, and they didn't rotate my tires like I asked. Ok, so I notice my truck leaking like stuck pig the following days and oil level is low. Call them to look at it, another FULL DAY of no truck. They let me know that the low oil level is "within safe level" so basically, they didn't fill the oil all the way up to save money. Then, they say it's my power steering high low lines... nope, brand new, I just replaced them myself.. "oh yeah, they do look new, we'll call you back" ... yep.. "it's your power steering pump.. we can fix it for $627.00" uhhhh... I'll get back with ya skippy. Do you think they topped off the oil? Or even the power steering g fluid? Nope. Tell ya what they did do. THEY LEFT MY POWER STEERING CAP OFF! Stay far far away from this location. Not only are they not able to change oil. I've been here a few times, and for the most part, the majority of the people who work here don't seem to care about their job, especially in the service department. They will take forever to approach you, and act put upon if you approach them, even when they are clearly dead/slow in there. The service people will especially act affronted if you ask them for the important details of a service provided, like how much it will cost and when they will be able to get to it. The last time I was in there, they also quoted me $50-$60 just to remove ONE stripped screw from the side of my steering wheel. That is the modern mechanic for ya -- $60 is the cost of courtesy, for an act that would have built rapport with the customer had they just done it for free or for less than a bleeding electric bill, and that would have then earned them the big bucks for large repairs down the line that such a customer would then feel confident in them to do. But hey, like I said, they clearly don't care about/have any pride in their work, so that's to be expected. I'll take my business elsewhere from now on, please and thank you. read more

I went to them because my AC was only working part of the time. When it worked out was great. I went in for an evac and recharge which cost $200. I get home and my ac is blowing hot air again. So, next day I go back and expain the problem. The service manager was great. No complaints with her. However, the service tech decided I needed a new compressor which would cost over $1000. I got a second opinion. The AC compressor is fine. The AC expansion bar is bad. That part cost me $7. I have lost any confidence in them. However the staff was friendly and wait time was reasonable. They put a steering wheel cover on for me at no charge while working on my vehicle. I will go back for routine maintenance. Anything other than that I'll check elsewhere. read more

Went to three other chain auto parts stores before coming across this store that I have never seen before. I had little hope in finding the radiator cap that I needed for my son's 2015 Subaru Legacy. I had gone to Autozone, O'Reilly's and Advanced auto and all were helpful but the so called universal part was less than for his car. As I stated in the autozone review, the Legacy is built in Lafayette since 1989, you would think most auto parts stores would have the appropriate replacement parts for these vehicles or at least call out the correct part. Well, Pep Boys does. After my journey around Lafayette and almost to the point of giving up and going to the dealership (which everyone knows costs twice as much or more) they had the correct radiator cap. Congrats to this company and location. I also saw they have repair service available which unlike the other auto parts stores means they have actual mechanics if you are in need of one. They don't have a Pep Boys in my home town and I have been in need of a place to get repair work done. The next repair I need, I will give them a try. read more

My husband and I were driving from Louisville to Chicago on I-65 last Sunday when our 2002 Honda Accord with 160,000 miles on it broke down....completely stopped! We had no idea what was wrong or what we were going to do about getting it fixed on a Sunday afternoon.. The tow truck driver called Pep Boys and they said they would fix it for us right away. We got over there by 3:00 and they were absolutely wonderful! They replaced the alternator and battery and got us back on the road by 6:00. Mike and his staff were just fantastic. We made it home safe and sound. Mike even called us Monday morning to see if we made it home alright. Talk about great customer service! I highly recommend Pep Boys. They are knowledgeable, efficient, and caring. If I lived in Lafayette, I would take my car there for all my service needs. read more

Eli told me that it would be done in 20-30 minutes, so I said I would wait and signed the paperwork. Thirty minutes later, they hadn't even moved my car from where it was parked in front of the shop. When I explained to the manager that I was in a hurry and had been promised 20-30 minutes, she told me there is no way they can predict how long things will take. Was 70 miles from home and my tire went flat.Went in to this location. Was told that they were too busy by service writer Ian. This was at 11 am!! Ian told me I could leave the car and come back the next day! Where was I suppose to go??? The even sadder point is that my husband works for Pep Boys in Fishers, Indiana and his store would NEVER do this to a stranded motorist. Luckily, Sears was close and they had me in and out in about 20 minutes. Sears was super nice and friendly. So disappointed in Pep Boys! Took my car to the dealer, and they said I had a bent rim and that all four tires needed replacing. I took it to Pep Boys to get a second opinion because the tires are fairly new. I told them I wanted to wait on it rather than dropping off the vehicle, and they put it up right away and were able to tell that the tire wear is because of my car's suspension, and that they are still safe to drive on. They also recommended another place in town that may be able to repair my rim, and were honest about how if I bought a rim from Pep Boys, they'd probably have to buy it through the dealer, so I was better off trying to repair it or purchasing it directly from the dealer myself. All this took about 20 minutes and they didn't charge me. Fast, friendly, and saved me a lot of money! read more

I've been here several times for oil changes, and once for a transmission flush. The service is always accurate and quick, and the pricing is fair, especially with the coupons I usually get in the mail. I've also saved substantial money over the competitors when ordering my parts online to be picked up in the store. Even had good help at the parts counter when I had a couple of questions from an older gentleman named Chuck. I also had a time when I had a scheduled oil change appointment, and the tech came into work an hour late, making me wait longer, and they didn't charge me for the oil change. Who does that? The guys here are the best. They always try to fit me in around my work schedule and I love how they stay open until 8pm. One time when I was in a bind right before close, two of the employees stayed open late just to run some tests and help me get a new battery so I could get home. They really are friendly, helpful, explain what they are doing, and go above and beyond in customer service. It's never fun waiting for work to be done on your vehicle but the employees at Pep Boys make it a good experience and I keep coming back for all of my vehicle needs. I was in a time crunch so stopped by to get oil change and wheel alignment. On a Sunday morning with no one in shop yet so figured be quick well 2 and half hours later they finished. When I got home I noticed a tick noise that wasn't there before oil change. I took back they were not helpful at all was actually unprofessional. 2 weeks later ticking noise still noticeable so went ahead had oil changed again another place. Well tick still ticking. From what I'm told from mechanic that pepboys bad reputation and that people usually take cars there to die. Sounds like the technician still had car running when changed oil and that they were pretty sure I had convential oil when i paid for full synthetic. My car broke down on the way to Florida with my kids and we didn't know where to go or where to be helped but I would like recognize Patrick at the service side he helped us with a warm welcome and he knew that we were from out of town and he offered to keep our car on the parking lot in order for us to get a tow to take our car back to Florida the next morning.. My college-age daughter was left crying in her car in their parking lot with a flat tire last night. She called them from a gas station when she realized her tire was flat from hitting something on the interstate as she was passing through the area. They told her they would wait for her. She drove on the flat to get there and then the employee just shook his head "no" when she arrived and knocked on the locked door. She was scared and also a bit shocked that two adult men with the ability to help her would not even talk to her. In another 15 minutes or so, the remaining employees ran out to their pickups and left. They did not even ask if she was okay. I talked to the manger today (Colin) and he was apologetic, said he would be having a conversation with those employees, and asked if she got it worked out. Yes, she did. The parents of a friend live in a nearby town and they got themselves bundled up, drove into Lafayette, and put her spare on for her. I am thankful for people like them who will actually help someone in distress. I only wish the employees who had the necessary skills to do it quickly had taken 10 minutes to do it for her. I would have been leaving a glowing review on here today instead of a negative one. How would one of those men feel if a nurse or doctor with lifesaving skills just stood by and watched when one of their loved ones needed assistance? Be human, people. read more

this is terrible experience. my friends did a mechanics check before he bought his car, the report said the only problem was oil and cabin filter needed to be changed. there was no big problem with the car, so we went ahead and did the transaction right away. however, 3 days later the car failed to start, we tried everything we could think of but it did not work. Now we have to tow the car to nissan dealership and have it checked. we don't know how much the cost is going to be. anyway, apparently the mechanic check missed the problem, he is supposed to be responsible for this and cover the expense, at least part of it. but when I called them, they refused to take any responsiblities. their reason was very ridiculous and aggrevating! they said they could guarantee everything was fine at the time of mechanics check, but not anytime after. seriously? not even 3 days? if that is the case, what is the point of spending around $100 to do the check? this is the worst experience I've ever had. And, I'm not challenging pep boys fans here, maybe they do well in other things, but if you ask me about pep boys, I'll say avoid it. read more

I've been to this location several times for service on my vehicle and everyone has always been very helpful. My most recent experience, I went in for a noise that was coming from the back of my car, it ended up being the wheel bearings which had been replaced a little over two years prior at this same location. We checked the paperwork, and although the 2 year warrantee had expired, Eric said that they would still honor it for me, amazing! I discussed with them that I wanted to make an appointment for a later date to get this fixed for financial reasons, and I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding, and they ended up replacing the bearings anyways. When I went came back to pay for it once my vehicle was ready, they completely waived the labor costs for the work they had done because of the misunderstanding and the fact that my vehicle had been there for several hours. Despite the minor hassle, I'll definitely be back! They have a great team who is always willing to go above and beyond! read more
