I have been coming to this Pep Boys for 3 years and generally have good experiences here. That said, I know that particular staff definitely can make a world of the difference so I'd like to commend Edder (not sure if Im spelling it correctly) for being consistently a pleasure to work with. He always is polite, knowledgable, and willing to patiently talk through my vehicle reports/diagnostics with me. He recently went out of his way to find a really economical alternator replacement for me (which isn't easy to find). I've also had other great interactions with the employees here, but I'll note that I usually drop off early in the morning or when I'm not in a rush (because they are often busy and there can be lines). Overall though, lines are a sign of regular customers which is a testament in itself. Also, Pep Boys has been easy and quick on replacing any parts under warranty that I've had issues with. The reason for this review is because I would like to provide you with my horrible experience at one of your stores. I have always been a loyal customer to the Pep Boys located at 261 Mclean Blvd, Paterson, NJ 07504 . I have been taking my vehicle for years to this location for oil changes. I never had a bad experience until now. On Thursday 02/27/25 I went in a little after 5pm to get a normal oil change. I waited like usual and was actually very happy on that day. Then, the shift manager by the name of Kenny called me up to the register for some reason. I really thought it was because my car was ready, however that was not the case. He actually stated that something was wrong with my Audi A4. He took me where my car was located. He got inside my car and pointed out that my transmission light was on. I asked what was this all about? Due to the fact that my car did not have this problem before. He stated that he did not know the reason either. Due to this reason my car was not drivable. I had to leave my car at the shop until the next day. I had to call a towing truck so they can take my car to Jack Daniels Audi Paramus - Service. There they analyzed my car and gave me the reason why my car was in this condition. The Tech stated that the car was not drivable because it seems that someone at Pep boys drain out the transmission fluids form my car. Now, I don't know if this was a mistake on their part or was done purposely. I was really upset and called your corporate office and file a complaint. I also have the report from Audi that states this information. Now, Audi is charging me almost $900.00 for this mistake. I do not believe is fair that I have to pay for something that was not my fault. This has put me through hell. I also spoke to the general manager by the name of Frankie and he was very unprofessional. I will never go back to this location ever again. This is very sad that they have to put customers through so much stress. This is also time consuming for me due to the fact that I have a full time job and go to school after that. Unfortunately, if this is not resolved I will take it to a higher level. This was unjustified, and should not happen to anyone. Came here three times. 1 for an oil change which was set to take 1 hour 20 minutes according to their staff. Took 4 hours because they didn't have the oil filter... 2, had to come in another day due to another service, they said 3 hours top but when dropping off the car the tech says it needs to be there over night? Spoke with the manager because different staff were telling me different things. Eventually it was completed in 6 hours... 3, for a tire repair. On the phone they said it would take 30 minutes. Then in the store they said it would take 1~1hour 20 minutes. So I waited 1 hour 30 minutes with my 4yo and my car is still in the parking lot. They called a Lyft for us but not sure why tell me 30 minutes, which is the reason I brought my kid. Final time pending. read more

Completely deceptive and just straight *ucked up I went in to replace a sensor ( which cost me 400$ with labor ) after just replacing my engine and the guy simply forgot to connect my air ventilation system . My van overheated and I almost blew my gasket 20 min after leaving . I had heard PEP BOYS takes advantage of their customers by fixing one thing and messing something else up just to make sure you go back but this is just cruel . *UCKIN SHAMEFULL . Bought a battery here in 2020. It's now 2023. The battery had a 4yr warranty. Ok no prob sometimes there are duds. Well I'm back to get it replaced and it's been almost 3 hours! They did a full diagnostic safety check. I just want the battery replaced! They have me sitting here waiting this whole time. I've complained multiple times to the manager. Called to schedule an appointment on Saturday at 1pm. person on the phone says to just come on in at 4. So I did, waited 2h there and they could not get to my car and I had to go. That's fine. They told me to schedule Friday in the morning and leave my car to make sure they can get to it. Dropped it off Friday 9:30am, they called me at 4pm telling me to leave my car over night bc they could not get to it. Next morning they call me bc they don't even know why my car was there. I'm giving it a 2 for the staff lack of respect for the Spanish community that calls in. The guy Mo would pick up and if it was Spanish caller they would ask, "do you speak Spanish?" Not sure why all the bad reviews. I needed a car battery for my 2014 Hyundai Elantra. After calling Advance Auto Parts & Autozone (both closer to my house) and being told they both only have 1 battery left and its $185-195. Insane! I called Pep Boys. They told me $65 all in with taxes and installed. I was in and out in 45 minutes. Great customer service and honesty all around. Sadly the other 2 places feel the need to lie and over charge. My wife and I recently purchased a BMW 328i Cabriolet with rear wheel drive. My goal was to equip this vehicle with quality winter/snow tires all around. After shopping on-line, I found PepBoys to have the lowest price. While in the store, I also found a good selection of Proline alloy wheels. The Service Writer, Carlos, offered me a great deal on the package that included 4 General Arctic Winter tires, 4 Proline wheels, valve stems, lug nuts, mounting, balancing, and installation. Aside from the good pricing, Carlos exhibited a very high degree of knowledge, patience, and understanding while helping me with my selection. Carlos also worked with me on my budget and personally assisted me with making certain that all of the components met the specs. of our BMW. (Carlos had the 4 conventional tires, that had been removed, neatly bagged so that I could handle and store them at home without getting our vehicle or my hands dirty.) Carlos is to be commended for the manner in which he interacted with me, the customer, despite it being a busy day. They don't give you updates, I mean I would think if your car is there for a week you would receive a phone call but no I had to contact them to find out what's going on. I had a great experience at this pep boys location today. Went to work one day and my car started making a terrible grinding noise when I pressed my brake. This happened out of nowhere. I'm working 6 days a week right now and only have Sundays off. I needed this fixed asap because my car is my bread and butter. I called Saturday at 5pm to book an appointment for my car for brake pads. The man said bring the car in sunday at 9 am. I was there at 855 am and they let me in the store. After I told him my name he took my keys and said they will call me in 30 min to tell me what's wrong with the car. When I got the call from pep boys he explained what was wrong with my car and what needed to be done. They found out my timing belt was rotten, I knew something was wrong cause the car made a noise in the morning when I started her up. He told me how much the parts cost and how much for labor. He said I needed front/back break pads, rooters, and a new timing belt. Total 530$. I thought that was a fair price so I said do it. They didn't come off as dishonest car mechanics like most mom and pop shops do. I also liked how he broke down part and labor cost, made me feel like I wasn't getting cheated. I came back around 1pm after getting a text informing me my car was done. When I payed he said I get a 50$ rebate gift card, that's awesome! So the total was 480$ I usually feel ripped off when I take my car in for repair but not this time, I will def return to this location. They just earned a new customer. This is the worst place. I would give negative stars if I could. Came in for new headlight bulbs and blinker out. After 4 hours I said I have to leave and they didn't even get to blinker. One week later and headlight bulbs do not work. Had to take to my regular mechanic to redo what they did and the bulbs were fine just attached wrong. On top of that they didn't put a piece back so now I have to order a replacement part too. Customer service never even responded. read more

I started to become very suspicious because the car really didn't feel that bad while driving, so I figured a second opinion never hurts. I then decide to take the car to Nissan for the second opinion. Nissan inspects the car and tells me that everything is fine and you only need to replace a sway bar (didn't even cost 100.00) I wanted this to be the first place I go so consumers can know what this company is about. As you can see from my earlier review that I was totally dis-satisfied with the service. - So i decided to contact the management at Pep boys to let them know about the problems I faced -I was not expecting much of the response but to my surprise within a day somebody from Pep boys contacted me for knowing more details. - A ticket was created to track my complaint - Service Manager Mr. Rivera from the same store contacted me through email and phone and discussed me the whole situation and listened with empathy and patience. - I was offered a refund to what I paid earlier $52.27 for diagnosis - When I went to pick up the refund I was surprised to see the changes in the store - I saw that they have hired new customer service agent and the store had a totally new vibe I am very happy to see how Pep boys management took serious measures in response to my complain especially the service manager Mr Rivera. Louis and his service staff at the Paterson NJ shop, spearheaded by mechanic Jackson, diagnosed the combination of sudden noises beneath my 2004 Blazer hood. Willy then price matched their website to give me the best deal. I had a 10 minute wait to get my truck into the bay, and 15 minutes for full diagnosis. The money saved on the alternator allowed me to get my exhaust problem addressed as well as a leaky hose. The parts and labor warranty is included with the deal and I am thoroughly impressed. While I waited inside, I was checked on by 3 other staff members. THIS PLACE IS GREAT! 5 stars for sure. read more

There needs to be better oversight of appointment scheduling and time to complete work. I scheduled an appointment to have four tires installed on a Saturday afternoon. The entire service took more than 3 hours. Upon taking my car the service advisor said that they were a little backed up but it shouldnt be more than an hour or so... There was supposed to be a complementary vehicle check that clearly wasnt completed because when I returned for an oil change the next day( I forgot to remind them to do it the day before) The service department informed me that I needed new brakes. This should have been seen the day before, so I guess the vehicle inspection was never completed the day before. By the way, today's oil change which was again by appointment is over 2 hours and still waiting. They did not move my car into the bay for over 90 minutes. I like this place. The workers are helpful and courteous and things are usually in stock. Whenever I buy windshield wipers they install them for free. I bought wipers last week, ordered online and they were waiting for me at the counter when I came in. The gentleman who installed them for me was concerned about the fit, after he installed them and we tried them out. He went back into the store to make sure I had ordered the correct wipers (I did). He spent some time with to make sure everything was ok and then refused to accept a tip. read more

Upon checking it PEP Boys says I have a bent axle and the cost just for the axle is $700.00 and that it would take 5 to 10 days for the axle to arrive from the dealer and they would need 350.00 for them to order the part . I declined service and called my Honda dealer. They said an axle costs 350.00 and after checking my car found NO BENT AXLE AND ONLY A SCREW IN MY TIRE!!!! I returned to PEP boys to complain. I don't know where to begin... I purchased brand new tires (Continental) from the Pep Boys location in Paterson, NJ back in Dec 2017. I drove off to only find my car shaking as it accelerates to 50mph.. Called the location I purchased/installed them, I was told to come in they will check it out. I did, they told me that they put my tires on wrong. What that means is that tires for Acura vehicles go on a specific way. Tires are label, outside/inside. Anyway, they said this would fix the shaking issue.. I drove off got on the highway, and it shakes, again! Fast forward to it now being 6 months of me going back and fourth with them and not finding the issue, my front tire pops as I drive on the highway. Almost had an accident, I go BACK to pep boys for them to haggle me and try to get money out of me over tires I been having an issue with from day one....after arguing, they replace my popped tire. Said they did a wheel alignment and balance that I should be good....i drove off, again on the highway.. My car shakes and steering wheel goes to the left....i immediately call pep boys and speak to Solomon (who originally sold me the tires, and kept on tell in b me everything is fine with my tires) and told him my car is shaking and going to the left what did they do... He said AGAIN bring it in and they check it out... At this point I refused to keep going back and fourth to a shop that not only didn't know what they were doing but bills you for things they never ACTUALLY did on your vehicle. Now, I had to go to second shop to see why are the tires making my car shake... Sure as hell, this shop figures it out that 3 tires (remember 1 popped and was replaced) were defective tires and had bubbles all around the front.... The shop marked the tires with chalk and allowed me to feel the air bubbles myself that explained all this... Then the 2nd shop checked my alignment (which was never done by pep boys) that was in the red.. They provided copy of my before and after alignment... I went back to pep boys to show what was discovered THE SAME DAY and demanded I get the tires replaced. Once again, after having to argue with them... They replaced my tires with good year ones which were cheaper then what I originally paid....now due to months of back and fourth the shaking caused my axel to crack from the weight and vehicle being driven with all the shaking. Pep boys cost my 932$ for defective Continental tires, that got replaced with 630$ Good year ones, 847$ axel repair. Oh, BTW... My Acura has a tire lock key, which pep boys broke while changing my tires and denied they did when they were the only ones that changed my tires. Had to buy a new tire lock, 50$. Fast forward to the latest and great pending issue today. I didnt learn my lesson the first time to NEVER buy anything from pep boys or deal with them, I go purchase a AC compressor (after market) for my acura rdx April, 2019... My mechanic installed the compressor that turned out to be defective ALSO as it continued to drain my car battery while the car was turned off overnight. I called the pep boys I purchased it from (Hackensack NJ) and told them what happened. The manager told me to bring the defective one in and they will give me a replacement... Now may I remind you NO ONE told me that pep boys was FULLY aware that these after market AC compressors are giving issues to vechles like mine and are not working.... Well, my mechanic installs the 2nd replacement compressor and fills it with freon, as he has it running for a few minutes so the new freon can run thru the system.... My vehicle dash system says " check engine (with codes) and VSA system failure"!!!!!! The REFURBISHED AC COMPRESSOR has done some damage to my vehicle that it is effectingtthe turbo boost in my car that won't accelerate as it did only 3 hours prior to installing the compressor.... I'm awaiting on how much it's going to cost me to fix!!!! I have all paperwork on what has transpired PEP BOYS IS GARBAGE... Their waiting room was closed because of COVID so I waited hours in the blistering heat, and they didn't even pull my car into the garage. Don't install tires at Pep Boys in Paterson, NJ. They lie to you about being "illegal" to install only 2 tires--and if you push them enough to only install 2 tires, they will do it (and they drop the act of it being illegal) and then they will push your car out of alignment so you have to go back and spend money on an alignment. I understand 4-wheel drive cars need the same tread, but this PepBoys staff pushes EVERY car to a manditory 4-tire sale! In addition, if your tires wear out prematurely like mine did based on the mileage rating (such as only 36K of the 60K expected miles per Michelin), they refuse to give you a credit--stating that each car drives differently so credits are only given if the tires aren't worn down too much. That's crazy to think they won't warranty tires based on mileage expected by the manufacturer! I get nothing but lies from their salesmen so they can make the most profit. Took my Maxima to the Meadowlands Nissan dealership for a new alternator and ended up walking out because the price they quoted was ridiculous! AND they stated that I needed a new battery. Called up Pep Boys in Paterson, spoke with Carlos and he gave me a quote over the phone and scheduled me for later that evening.
