I want to thank Dylan and Artie for great customer service. While traveling to Maryland, one of my tires started sounding funny, so I found a Pep Boys nearby, and it turned out to be a blessing. When I arrived I explained my situation and they weren't sure they were going to get me in since it was late Sunday afternoon and they closed at 6p. But, they were able to squeeze me in, and after driving my car, Artie said he could not let me get back on the road with that tire. He replaced the tire and got me back safely on the road. With my extended warranty, Pep Boys had the service contract for maintenance. Four years of service from this location and not once did they check fluid levels. After the warranty expired, I needed tires. The tire shop did a thorough job and advised my coolant was running low. On Saturday May 16 2020 I took my 2008 Honda civic sedan to this pep boys in order to have an oil change. I then handed my keys over to the service advisor at the front desk he proceeds to go out start it up and somehow and damaged my car so badly that it wouldn't go back into either drive or park at all. I was later told by the head mechanic that this service advisor was not even authorized to move my car at all and on top of that he never had me sign the paperwork to authorize them to work on it at all either. The clowns keep my Honda for over a week replaced the neutral safety switch and shift cable at no cost. But they damaged both parts when they give it back to me on Memorial Day weekend 2020. Their GM lies to me and claimed the car was fit to drive to VA beach for me to start my vacation when it was not! Also later on I find out that my medication I needed was no longer in my glove compartment and was missing as well. Later another mechanic hired to fix the car nearby told me they did this to me car at pep boys "a calamity of errors" N. Finally Leete tire and Auto said when I picked up the car a "calamity of errors N. Yesterday, I requested an A/C evaluation by simply saying my AC doesn't work. I received an evaluation indicating i needed to replace my blower motor and resistor. I agreed to the repairs. Got my car at end of day and to my surprise my AC still was not working properly. i immediately called the shop and was advise the AC Technician had left for the day and to bring the car back in the morning. I brought my car back and the AC Technician did another evaluation. I was advised I needed to replace the compressor and orifice tube (Excuse my spelling.) I was very upset that the compressor wasn't checked yesterday. How do you not check the compressor when you're told your AC doesn't work? No excuse, just poor evaluation that shook my trust that the AC Technician was competent enough to complete a thorough evaluation. Long story short, I did not have them service my car. I do not recommend anyone to have their AC service by them. i seriously doubt I will ever take my vehicle back for any type of service based on this experience. i am not a happy camper. read more

I selected the earliest appt I was offered which was about 5 days in the future. On the day of my appt, I drove 30 minutes (one-way) to get there only to find out that they haven't even ordered my tires yet. WTF?!?!? They offered to sell me two other tires instead for much more money (bait and switch). I declined. So, they said they would order the tires I originally purchased online and I'd be able to come back six days from now. They're either trying to price-gauge me and squeeze me on time due to a failed inspection of one of my tires OR their web ordering system and operations are 100% untrustworthy. I made an appointment for a repair. The person said the tech got in at 930, so she'd see me at 10. (So noone was ahead of me). When I checked in, they had no idea who I was or why I was there. 45 minutes after I arrived they tell me that the parts they quoted me for are not recommended. The Subaru parts would cost more. I asked for the price. Twenty minutes later, I still didn't have a price. So, an hour after my appointment time, my car was still sitting in the parking lot and no parts were even on the way. Needless to say, I left. I don't think it's too much to ask to begin and end on time, charge the price you quoted, have the parts on hand when you know in advance that a particular repair is scheduled, and know more than I do about car repair. I hate to write a negative review because the people there are nice, but always get a second opinion if you feel you are being quoted too much. Took my car in and was told I needed close to $1000 worth of work. That sounded high, so I called around and explained my situation to another shop. The owner of the other shop said that the fixes recommended seemed strange based on the mileage and age of my car, so I brought it there to see what they thought. Turns out I only needed one simple fix that was around $200. None of the things Pep Boys insisted I needed (and in fact said my car wouldn't pass inspection without having fixed) actually needed to be done. It's nice that you can schedule appointments in advance, and they have night/weekend hours - but be careful with anything other than basic repairs. Always call around. I booked a state inspection 4 days ago and showed up early to my time today and was rudely told that the appointments for state inspection aren't honored and that it's only first come first serve and all the appointments are booked for the day. How are they all booked for the day when I had a time I selected online after selecting what I was going for was for state inspection??? It also would be one thing if the employees weren't rude and were apologetic for your website sucking, but instead I was met with rudeness and they acted like I was stupid for showing up to the appointment I booked with your website. Ridiculously overpriced! I called to get a quote on a new starter (parts and labor) for my 2004 Kia Sedona van. They quoted me $595. I called THREE other places and ALL THREE places were very reputable with great Yelp reviews and all three quoted me between $285-$350 range. What can I say besides avoid this place at all costs. It would be cheaper and better quality to take it to a dealership. They charge $147 to diagnose and include $0 of that into the repair should you choose to have it repaired there. Their prices are outrageous comparatively. Then when they say the problem still exists after it's repaired elsewhere, they can't take it and charge a second diagnose fee and blame it on something else related to the repair. They do well with greeting you with a smile at the door though but that's likely because they see the next person they can try to swindle. It was my SO car and she will certainly never do business with them again. And in my case, I see it as a long term downfall of a once quality company that is living on a past reputation alone which has cemented the reason why I haven't gone to them in a long time and will never return. I was going out of my way to keep coming here after I moved, but the past two visits were not good. Despite the fact that I have been a very regular customer for years, they were not rotating my tires like they used to, and it caused two to wear unevenly. The worst part of this is that nobody bothered to say anything (no, hey, btw, next time you're in) or anything until I made an appointment to have my brakes checked and then all of a sudden I got a "you need two new tires or you will probably die" (I'm paraphrasing a bit, but that was certainly the tone). I had just been in the month before -- it's not like I was going months without service. The price they gave me was really high, and it was honestly the first time I've ever felt that they were trying to take advantage of me. Surprise scare tactics are never the way to go... if I wanted to overpay for that crap, I'd go to the dealer. I left, got a MUCH better deal elsewhere, and will not be returning. Had an awful experience with the quality of service here. I went in for a state inspection and encountered the following problems: They said I needed to replace the power steering pump because it was leaking. Parts+labor for typical power steering pump replacement cost between $300 to $500. The inspector couldn't tell the difference between engine oil and automatic transmission fluid! (My power steering system runs on automatic transmission fluid). I had to go under the car and point out that the "power steering leak" was just oil residue from an oil leak. The two fluids are not very hard to tell apart with a SLIGHT bit of attention. That is $300 to $500 I could have been paying for replacing something that is working perfectly fine. Secondly, when they put one of my rear wheels back on, they cross-threaded the lug nut all the way onto the stud. When I went to adjust the brakes a few days later, the lug nut was so stuck in there that the stud sheared off. They did admit their fault and replace the stud for free. But I am still very upset with their carelessness with something as simple as putting a wheel on a car properly. Keep in mind that they specialize on doing tires here. Thirdly, when they gave me the car back with a rejected inspection, they forgot to put the sticker on the windshield. I was almost home when I got a call saying they need me to drive all the way back. Finally, after I had done all the work needed to pass re-inspection, I dropped my car off at 9:30am to have it reinspected + have the broken stud replaced. They said it should be done by "early afternoon because we are packed today", which was very reasonable. I got my car back at 8:10pm. That is ~10.5 hours! They said something about only 1 inspector being present that day. Great shop you runnin' there. Overall, I felt the need to jack up my car and inspect it myself after I brought it home. Visited three time to get a tire swapped out that is under warranty. The first time they told me it would be 1.5 hour wait and that I should come back in the morning. The second time after making me wait for 45 minutes without even asking me what I came in for, they told me that they couldn't help me at this location because the tire was from Midloathian !!! Extremely disappointed with the service (or lack thereof) I received today.This isn't the first time I've had issues, but will definitely be the last. The last time I came here, my car broke down 3 days later and had to trade it in it was so bad. Save yourself some time n' money, and research another mechanic that knows what they're doing. I initially took my '18 Chevy Malibu in yesterday for an oil change -- with the understanding that that was the more pressing problem that needed fixing and I would bring the car back Sunday (next day) for the brakes to be fixed - which I am not able to push down all the way/ is very dangerous to drive. Well, they end up doing the oil change, giving me all new tires, and fixing my windshield wipers and telling me they got "prior authorization" to fix my brakes the next day. So I come back today to have the brake problem taken care of and wait 2-3 hrs as they give me new brakes. They take my car down, drive it from the garage, and bring me back the keys saying "Good to go!" I hop in the car, put my foot on the brake, and there's no change what-so-ever after they've just given me new brakes. I go right back inside (which they knew I was coming since they had just driven the still-messed-up car back from the garage) and he had an excuse ready as to why it was my fault because "I had originally brought the car in for an oil change not to have my brakes fixed" .....Uhhh? What???! "It doesn't matter if I brought it in YESTERDAY for an oil change... I'm here TODAY to have my brakes fixed and that doesn't make any sense anyway.. that's what we all agreed on and what you've been working on for the past 2 1/2 hours and have been paid for.." .... "Bobby" would not budge. Just kept saying the same excuse over and over that I didn't originally bring it in for brakes, so it's my fault they weren't fixed...even though they'd been working on the brakes and didn't address the problem..? I will never go back to this Pep Boys again. Ever. I figured I'd try to help other unsuspecting customers by posting my experience here on Yelp. I've only ever left 2 reviews on Yelp in my life..this being the 2nd. I'm under the impression they knew new brakes wouldn't fix the problem but they decided to squeeze the money out anyway -- thinking I'd stay and have the actual, underlying issue fixed by them as well. I want to preface I have never had an issue at Pep Boys until this a.m., when I presented a $19.95 coupon to the ASSISTANT Mgr, who looked at it and said "I can't take this," and I asked why and her response was "bc it doesn't say Quaker Oil." Never have I ever had an issue presenting a coupon before. I told her I've never had an issue before and she said "Do you want to see the policy," and I said "cancel my appt. You're an asshole" and her response was "likewise." Then I told her to go "f*** herself." I've reported her. She said she was the mgr but she's not. She's just a peon ASSISTANT Mgr with a big head. People like her should not be in this type of business when they have attitudes like this. The short and sweet of it... Had a drivers-side rear tire which needed to be aired-up every four days. Took it in to Pep Boys to fix it. While I was there I went ahead and had the oil changed and had the tires rotated. After an hour the car was ready. Was charged for the oil change, the $22 to repair the tire, and to have the tires rotated. Girl at the counter was friendly. Two days later the same drivers-side tire went flat. Clearly they didn't fix the tire, nor did they rotate them, but I sure did pay for them. Took the car back, explained how they didn't do the work I'd paid for, and waited for them to do it. After an hour the tech kept conversing with the girl at the counter. She proceeded to tell me they weren't comfortable fixing the tire because there wasn't anything to be repaired, but rather it was worn and leaking air. Fair enough. However, she then handed me a quote stating that not only did all four tires need to be replaced but the damage was caused by the shocks AND struts all being shot on the entire car. The quote just to do the shocks and struts was $1400. I just moved to Richmond and before I did had a garage where I did my own shade-tree mechanic work when it came to simple things like shocks, struts, basic maintenance, and bolt-on stuff in the engine. I KNOW my shocks and struts aren't bad. There's no leaking fluid, the springs are strong, and the hydraulics so rigid there's zero bounce in the car. Even if they were bad they were trying to charge DOUBLE in labor. It's the double-whammy: Incompetence followed by an attempt to sell me something I didn't need, nevermind at a ridiculously jacked-up price. The girl at the front was friendly but I'm not going to ever go to this store again. Imagine if you're a young person who doesn't know any better. You're likely to get ripped off. I'm torn on how to rate pep boys because there were good and bad things that I experienced. First of all, the best part was being abled to schedule my appointment online and get an appointment for the next morning. I needed 4 new tires! On the way to the appointment, one of my tires went flat so that was the start of the awful day for me. When I got there, I was greeted by a young girl working thed register, very nice, and helpful. It was her birthday, and she was such a pleasant breath of fresh air to what would be a stressful rotten day. I let her know right off the top I needed to be on my way to DC at 2pm. It was 10am. She informed me of the buy 3 get 1 free deal, and said they had my tires in stock. They took the car back within 15 mins of my arrival. So, I thought we were good. I was mistaken. They proceed to do the tires, and about an hour in she tells me they made a mistake, they only have 3 tires and one of the guys was on his way too Midlothian to get the 4th. So I go back to waiting... another 35 minutes pass by.. still not done..then she tells me he drove to the nine mile store first and they didn't haved it so NOW he's on the way to Midlothian. I was pissed because getting new tires shouldn't take this long and I had a tight schedule. Finally they get it done, but it's too late now to also do an alignment. I tell her just forget it theres not enough time. Through all of this, the girl was so professional and did her best to handle me and I told her how much I appreciated her. However, as hard as she tried to get me to reschedule that alignment I do not now or ever plan to go back. I even returned to the mechanic that had replaced it to get them to check it out and they confirmed that I absolutely did not need a new one...and my breaks were good for another year. Yet another vehicle repair location you can't trust. Call for a price quote for two new rear breaks. Was told $158. Sounded good, so I made an appointment. When I came in the price raised to $256. Then they came back to say the front breaks needed to be repaired also. Unless in two days my front breaks went from ok to bad they are just trying to get money out of me. Another shop I actually trust had said the front breaks were ok but the back needed to be replaced. After I told her no, just replace the back ones she said "fine, wreck your front wheels". She walks out of the waiting room, the door doesn't even close and she comes back and says something about the rooters on the back also needed to be replaced. And she wouldn't let me drive out of here with rooters like that. And that would cost an additional over $100. So what was supposed to cost $158 is now going to be over $380. UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES Brought my car here to have the tires rotated and after waiting 2 hours they told me that they couldn't do it because the tire tread was 3/32" different between the front and rear tire on one side. The man said Pep Boy's corporate guidelines prohibited this because it was unsafe. He wouldn't give me a copy of the sheet with the mechanic's hand written tread notations so I copied it myself and went to Sam's Club where they rotated the tires front to back and checked the tread which was 6/32" in the front and 8/32" in the rear (only 2/32 difference) and they stated the wear was even across all tires. The bottom line is this Pep Boy's franchise didn't want to rotate the tires because it wasn't profitable enough for them compared with other work or they just wanted to sell me new tires.
