Ever since moving to Charlotte, have always been on the lookout for good Korean food, something I had so much easier access to in New York! For some reason, all the Korean restaurants found their way in the Matthews area and after consulting my trusty Yelp, checked this place out based on the prior reviews. Met my expectations and my hankering, but didn't blow my mind. The portions were decent and the hubs and I were able to share a Bibimbop and an appetizer and still have leftovers. I was disappointed there weren't more side dishes offered (we only got two and a soup), but it was good enough. The service was decent, but only checked with us when we called them. No proactive checking in with us otherwise. The place is really easy to pass by without realizing you missed it. It's tucked away in a grocery store and you would think you are in somebody's house instead of a restaurant. I don't know that I would come back here again, unless I find out all the other Korean places in Charlotte aren't up to par. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Small and quaint. Service is friendly and pretty fast. We had the bulgogi and my hubs had the short ribs. Very tasty and my daughter even liked it. We will definitely come back again. This is probably the best korean food you'll get around Charlotte metro area. It's even a bonus since there's a grocery store attached :) so it's a win win! read more

I love this place! We first went here because it is the closest Korean restaurant near where I live and it was date night. Not only was the food great, the grocery store attached was a huge plus! First i would like to say the food was delicious. Better than most kbbq places ive been to. But the service was horrible! We arrived at 630 and didnt leave until 830. There were empty tables but the waiter kept telling us there were people eating there. We also had to grab our own menus, repeatedly press the service button just to order (no one came.) We had to request for refills which took a few minutes for them to just grab a can from the back. The only time the servers came by our table was to give us our food and our check. We were never asked how the food was. But like i said. The food was amazing, im just not sure if it was worth it for dealing with such bad service. read more

I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of Korean food, but read the reviews and thought I would give it a try. I love a good hole in the wall & this place is nearby. The food was good, and very pretty (my husbands). We had the fish shaped ice cream for dessert and I grabbed a few face masks in the grocery store. It's a great little shopping/lunch adventure! Some food are very good. Some are okay. Wait time is very long. 1-1.5 hrs easy. Even if you call and order ahead for a take out, they take dine in persons order first. They may say the order won't take long but when you arrive, u will see that was never the case. If you want Korean food you may want avoid busy hours. Highly recommended. Had 3 of my qualifiers for authenticity: kids (of said ethnicity) running around in kitchen, restaurant located in back of (said ethnicity) grocery store, and bars on the windows (although minimal). The waiters were young Korean kids who spoke perfect English and very friendly- there is a bell at each table that you ring when ready to order. The menu is pretty big and has pictures of everything. Kids menu: N/A, wouldn't recommend for picky eaters but for the more adventurous, you can find good grilled meat and rice options that will expand your kids culinary horizons! Kids review: The dumplings ("yaki mandoo", fried pork dumplings) were good with the sauce. The rice is really sticky but good. We liked the meat (Korean bbq with rice) the most, it was the best. Parents review: We got one order of dol sot bibimbap in the hot pot, it was a little light on meat but so delicious. Loved how the rice got a little bit crispy in the hot pot. The chili sauce was a perfect addition. We also got an order of the spicy pork - huge portion of delicious spicy meat. Not too spicy, just right. The pickle side dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The only downsides were that the decor is a little drab and there's no alcohol served here. Service was great, though. The kids enjoyed the service button on the table - just ring the bell when you need something and someone appears instantly. So cool! When you're done eating, make sure to stop by the market for some treats - the kids love chocolate pokke sticks and strawberry ramune (Japanese soda). read more

Yum, Yum, give me some!! I was looking for a good lunch spot in the area and came across to this small Korean grocery store/restaurant. I walked in the side door to a little store with a room with people in it. The waiter was nice and showed me to my seat. It was a very quaint spot that reminded me of places abroad. Often places are the most ascetically pleasing to the eye but the best with the home cooked vibe. I e always wanted to try Bi Bim Bop and boy was I happy with the food. It came in a clay pot which was sizzling. The sides were a variety of the things that I couldn't pronounce but good none the less. I highly recommend this spot for a good homey meal and just curiosity of Korean culture. I hope to come back and get more food!! read more

PePeRo is one of my favorite Charlotte restaurants-what am I saying? It's on the TOP of my list of faves!!! Everything I've tried has been fantastic! My latest discovery was the goat stew. It simmers on a burner right at the table. The meat is super tender and there are no bones to mess with, and there's a large variety of veggies mixed in. It's spicy, but not overwhelming. Perfect to share between four people or two if you want to enjoy leftovers. I highly recommend it! read more

I love this place. They serve authentic Korean food here. My favorite dish to order is always going to be the seafood pancake and spicy seafood soup. It's locally run by the owners of the grocery store. It's convenient because they have a little bell attached to the table and so when you are in need of anything you can ring the bell and they'll be right there. It's a little bit further from the university area so I don't stop by as often however it's definitely worth the drive. read more

As far as Korean food in Charlotte goes this is the most authentic I would say. It's located in the back of an asian grocery store and has booths and tables. Service is good and food is good. There's not many Korean restaurants to choose from in Charlotte so if you're looking for one I'd go here. It's not fancy and doesn't offer the flare newer restaurants in Southend but it's tasty and very affordable. read more

My go-to Korean place in Charlotte. I like it because it's authentic, tasty & affordable. I wish I'm more adventurous when it comes to my ordering, but I swear by the spicy squid over rice. For $10, that's the best darn thing EVER! Now, let's not kid ourselves, the service here is spotty. I have been itching to find a nice Korean place in Charlotte! I was used to having lots of choices in Chicago and I was worried that it was going to be impossible to find that here. Luckily, Yelp did not steer me wrong! Stopped in for a quiet lunch- the place looked simple and clean. Our waitress was attentive, very friendly. Ordered a seafood pancake that was thicker than I have been used to in other restaurants, but still perfectly golden and tasty. The sauce that came with it was salty/spicy and proved a good combination. My husband got a dolsot bi bim bop (I cant spell!!) and I had some clear noodles with beef and veggies. Everything hit the spot perfectly! I had leftovers and am still excited about it. The little market portion is cute and has all the usual items- aloe vera juice, sweets and chips, etc that you can't get anywhere else. I will definitely be back! I recently moved to Charlotte after living overseas for the past ten years, four of which were spent in Korea. My favorite food is Korean and I know it can be difficult to find decent Korean food in some cities. So I was ecstatic to find Pepero! I have been there four or five times in the past few months. The quality of the food has been excellent each time. I usually order the Samgyeopsal (pork), it's served as "spicy pork with vegetables". I usually get the yakimandoo (a simple pan-fried meat and veggie dumpling), which have been great as well. The restaurant is tucked in the back of their Korean food shop. So, most of the ingredients you eat at the restaurant can be purchased at the shop up front. They even sell kimchi! Anyways, I highly recommend Pepero! read more

This was sooo good! I'm still tasting the spices from the chili paste and kimchi. Ok, back of store...restaurant...yah yah yah...don't have to repeat everything. This was my first experience with Korean food. Being born and raised on eating grease with my chicken, I don't have much of a chance to really compare this to any other restaurants. The only other "culinary" food from where I come from involved Pizza Hut and the chinese buffet. Man, I need to get out more often. I am totally in love with bibimbap now. The tray (it was takeout) was full and there is still some left over...must...not...force...it...down...The kimchi was good too but I couldn't eat the last bits that are swimming in the chili sauce. Too much spice for me. Again, not to say it wasn't good. The people there were very friendly. I did come across they don't take credit cards unless it's $10 or more and they don't have a take out menu (boo) for me to take to work. However, after I got back from the bank, my food was ready, and given to me with a smile. (They deserved a hug for that.) Overall, my taste buds had a great time. My stomach? That's yet to be seen. We found this place after our fave [ kojan bistro ] closed down. My wife is the true aficiando of Korean cuisine and we decided to try Pepero the day we discovered Kojan had shut down. What can I say we both needed fix. Suffice to say we were glad we did. This is a small family run place in back of a small grocery, much like one would find in Korea. Decided to visit PePeRo for Jam bong (excuse my spelling) on a trip to Charlotte. Update, There are more seating in the restaurant part now, at least 14 tables for 4. We ordered the Jam Bong, seafood pancake, udon noodle soup, and friend squid over rice. All the food was excellent, the soup broth was rich in taste, though it was very red, it was not really spicy (the only downside). The fried squid came in a really nice bbq sauce, and it was obvious that the ingredients were fresh. The side dishes were yummy too, fresh kimchi ftw. In short, PePeRo offers great food and even better price!!! read more

Today I went to this "authentic Korean restaurant for dinner". Every since I moved to Charlotte, I went there quite often since the restaurant was my primary source of "Korean cuisine". They have decent soup broths and nice and piping hot Dol Sot (Stone Pot) Bi Bim Pap. Today was just one of my personal visits to dive into the realm of MOUTH WATERING and savory beef broth. (Sul Lung Tang) $12.99. The reason why I gave this restaurant a 1/5 stars was it's BAD WAITERS and FOOD QUALITY. Today, I came during the more busier times where there was more people. Many people know that the side dishes, "Ban Chan" are free when you visit there. MY FIRST REASON WHY I GAVE THIS RESTAURANT A BAD REVIEW WAS BECAUSE I ASKED FOR THE BEAN SPROUTS AND THE PICKLED SEAWEED. THE WAITER WHO ALREADY HAD SLOW SERVICE TO US, EVEN THOUGH WE ARRIVED BEFORE THE GROUP NEXT TO OUR TABLE, FAILED TO GIVE THE SIDE DISHES. TO BE HONEST, I CAN EXCUSE THAT BECAUSE IT WAS A BUSY DAY. THE THING THAT REALLY IRKED ME TODAY WAS THAT FIRSTLY THE WAITER ONLY GAVE US THE SIDE DISHES FOR ONE TURN ONLY. EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN HAVE MORE REFILLS TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. (NOT UNLIMITED LOL!) I personally asked the one of two waiters working there whether I can get a second turn for myself and to go with the white rice. The waiter states that they ran out of the bean sprouts and that they are making new ones. After 20 minutes or so, when my food arrives, I spot that there is still the bean sprouts and that it is given to other tables nearby. SO IN SHORT, I HAD TO EAT MY DINNER WITHOUT COUPLE MORE ROUNDS OF SIDE DISHES, SERVED IN TINY LITTLE MINI-PLATES. The second reason why today's visit to the restaurant was a shortcoming was due to the lack of garnish in my beef broth soup. Sul Lung Tang. You many believe that this is just a trivial thing that does not really matter, but during my numerous previous visits, everything was on point. The soup lacked flavor without the use of salt and pepper. Additionally, my friends ordered the Ae Gu Tang, which was a hot and spicy fish egg soup. My second friend ordered the hot and spicy cod fish soup. The egg lacked flavor and was frozen. There was only like three little thumb sized pieces. For the cod fish soup, it only had couple pieces of fish meat, with mostly bone. My final words for today was the use of tips. Personally, I believe in giving tips to those "hard working" waiters. Well today, even though I had 5 people, with my total bill adding up to 51 dollars, the tip which the waiter includes at the very beginning, was 9 dollars. Apparently it is 20 percent of the total bill. I personally felt that I could not give tips that much for such little service and effort. The waiter did not even come to our tables, only twice when delivering the water/tea and delivering the actual dinners. The waiter did not even state whether you want side dishes, or refilling our cups or asking whether the food is good or not. IN SHORT, everything was due to the poor service and bad food quality. THE RESTAURANT IS DEGRADING AND FALLING BELOW THE QUALITY LEVEL. I HOPE THAT THIS COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW SERVES YOU WELL, AND HAVE YOU PONDER ON WHETHER TO GO THERE OR NOT! HAPPY EATING! read more

Food is authentic, delicious and inexpensive. So glad I found this place. Very humble, plain dining area but the food is 5 stars. Very nice staff, waitress was lovely and polite. They even have a call bell at each table, to summon the waitress. I had my fave dish, Bi Bim Bap, and it was served with the traditional side dishes. The menu had plenty of choices and it offered Korean brown tea with ice water for free. 99 cents for cans of soda. No beer or wine served here, but the food made up for it. This place never ceases to make my stomach full and satisfied. They have a variety of dishes that I have yet to try, but I usually go for the jajangmyeon (black bean noodle dish) or the bibimbap (assorted vegetables and beef over rice) in a regular bowl. I had the bibimbap once in the hot pot and it was really good. The rice is crispy at the bottom of the pot and it stays warm for quite some time. My favorite appetizers are the tteobokki (rice cakes) and yaki mandoo (fried beef dumplings). I've tried the kimchi and seafood jjigae, they were good (especially the tofu; they're soft and warm to eat), but I wouldn't get them as often. I had the ramen hot pot one time with a group of friends and my oh my, it definitely fed all of us and fulfilled our stomachs. This is a hidden place where you won't believe it is a opening restaurant and Korean grocery store. We ordered three dishes, spicy pork, soft tofu soup and Chang Jiang mun~ spicy pork and cha Jiang mun are amazing,highly recommended! Soft tofu soup is not that impressive, they can def work on that. Sides are good and you can ask for refill~ all of this cost us 35 bucks including tips!
