I've always wanted to try it here so finally gave it a shot. Was a quiet Tuesday night but interestingly it picked up around 7pm. Umami does not look impressive on the outside at all. Actually it looks kind of runned down and scary. However, I was in a hurry and wanted a late lunch. I ordered a miso soup and Naruto roll. Both were outstanding. The naturo roll may be one of the best I ever had. They have homemade hot sauce for their other items, too. Very large menu! Service was also great. As a lot of REAL customers have stated, there's literally zero communication as soon as you step in. Despite the place constantly being empty, you'll by lucky to be seated by a waiter/waitress within 5 minutes of walking in. And the food is just ridiculously awful. I had no expectations going into this weird little building in Matthews, but I'm so glad I did. The ambience was really nice, the service was great, and the food was solid. A lot of their sushi rolls are fried, which isn't my preferred style, but I managed to find an option that wasn't (there were a lot of choices), and we got the shumai for an appetizer. I'm sorry but the food was not good at all. I ordered a fried Philadelphia roll. I can tell the oil it was fried in was old. Nothing tasted fresh. My date ordered habachi chicken and shrimp it was bland. With the high reviews I was hoping for a new sushi spot but this just didn't cut it. Service was fine, no complaints there. I was really disappointed when I stopped by here after seeing all the reviews. I come to Charlotte for work regularly & I get a generous food stipend for dinner. I had stopped by the gym & was starving to get something in my stomach before going to my hotel. When I walked in, I was nervous about wearing a tank top so I put a hoodie on & most everyone there seemed pretty casual. When I got in no one said anything to me, I kind of stood there and waited til I finally walked up to one of the chef's & asked if I sit myself as there were booths open. He replied that the waitress would talk to me. I sat there for 20 minutes & she never came up to me. Eventually I just walked out. I think I would have preferred any communication. Some of their sushi is literally baked in an oven. This was a volcano roll and it was described just like a regular sushi there was nothing on the menu that indicated it was going to be completely baked like this. I was able to get it taken off and get something else instead but it was a little bit weird. Just beware that you may want to ask for a description of what you order before you order and it comes to the table as hot sushi. read more

You had me at all you can eat sushi that is made to order. My husband and I split the matthews roll, tricolor, and the crunchy shrimp roll. We also ordered gyoza, edamame, and salad. We had incredible service and everything came out quickly. My husbands favorite was the matthews roll and gyoza and mine was the crunchy shrimp roll. A group of gals and I went to Umami for dinner. This is an underappreciated gem in the heart of downtown Matthews. I just had the best bento box in my life ! It was HUGE !!! There were only a couple of tables of people there on a Thursday night, and I have no idea why this place is not packed with people. The Bento boxes are A-Maz-Ing ! They are huge compared to what I've had at most places. You get hibachi with the meat of your choice, fried rice, endamame, a salad, miso soup, and a California sushi roll. You can upgrade to a different roll for $2.50. The food was good quality and very tasty ! They give you a side of teriyaki-like sauce and that Japanese sauce. I got the beef hibachi and thoroughly enjoyed it. I substituted the salad that came with the meal to a seaweed salad. They gave a huge quantity and I loved it. The tempura shrimp and veggies were excellent ! Perfectly crisp and I especially liked the flat disk of sweet potato. The bento box also came with miso soup. Additionally, I got the buffalo chicken sushi roll, just to be different. It was good but there was no heat despite the menu saying there was chili oil. I got a plum wine to go with my meal. Our waitress was such a sweet lady. She said she was Chinese and I was wearing pants that had Chinese writing on them. One of my friends in the spirit of the moment asked her what my pants said. She graciously translated for us. (See photo for this part). The first column on the left from top down means "beautiful" "lover" I'm lover" and "very good". So I guess loosely translated, my pants say "I'm a beautiful lover who's very good." Haha !!! The second column to the right she said she was too embarrassed to translate. So yeah, here I am walking around wearing pants announcing my sexual prowess, I guess. Lol ! Anyway, us girls burst out and died with laughter. Btw... if you speak Chinese fluently and want to message me what the second column says, I'm open to it. Lol We had so much food left over, we packaged it to go. I had accidentally left it on the table since we were busy socializing and saying goodbyes; but our sweet, little waitress runs out to the parking lot with my bag of leftovers and hands them to me just as I'm about to get into my car. I came on a day when there was not an all-you-can-eat option (Saturday). My friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. The ambiance is kind of weird. It feels like they built the restaurant in an old Wendy's that went out of business. We got the vegetable tempura appetizer. I really enjoyed it! Very tasty stuff. The itself sushi was pretty mediocre. I feel like it may be worth it to come here on a day when you can pay one price and eat as much as you want, but it's definitely not worth coming here to when you cannot indulge in that. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I normally hate sushi but their crispy bagel rolls are to die for. Its the only sushi i've ever had that i've actually liked. They also have other options for people who don't like sushi. Their Avocado salad is good and so is their miso soup. Workers are nice and are very accommodating to someone like me who asks a lot of questions when it comes to food i don't know if i will like. Ive been here twice. Once for table service and once for takeout. Table service was great and very speedy. Takeout took a little bit longer but it was not unreasonable, only 15 minutes. read more
