Was in the mood for something similar to Portuguese barbecue and found this place. Ordered on a Friday night and the food arrived timely and hot. As for the food, this place has a lot of potential but the execution was just not there. Short Rib Sandwich, came with two big pieces of short rib, was not tender, it was severely over cooked, and the bun was like wet paste because of condensation. The meat was like eating rubber. This came with French fries. Mixed Grill, came in a half pan with three flanken beef ribs, two chicken breasts, 4 sausages, two pork chops. I opted for a side of fries and a salad. The meat had some flavor to it but once again the ribs and pork chop was overcooked. It also came with housemade chimichurri, which was delicious. Maduros, were really good--sweet with a bit of char. This place has the right idea, great portions, good prices, and a nice menu. However, the cook time on the meat should be revisited. The buns and fries due to the steam needs a solution so customers aren't receiving mush. An air fryer was able to crisp the fries but the bun was done. I ordered takeout here for one of my offices and the experience was seamless! I love the online ordering option, which is very user friendly. Was able to schedule it for the next day. Pickup was quick. Ordered a whole garlic chicken which was juicy and tender.. we love the sauce! The chicken empanada was average, but tasty. The fried rice could've been better seasoned and was a little bit on the dry side. The beans needed extra seasoning and were a bit watery. I loved having a passion fruit juice option... love passion fruit! And the extra packets of sauce that they give really helps. Great tasting BBQ sauce. But, wow... definitely gave an extra start for the amount of food. Really plentiful portions which you appreciate during these day and age of skimpier portions for more cost. I'm accustomed to the Portuguese BBQ places in Newark, but I have to say that this Peruvian place was much better. 10 out of 10 for everything ( the yellow rice, the chicken, and the fries). After losing my craving for Chinese food, I decided to give Pepe's BBQ a shot to spice up my life and try something different. First off, I am going to say straight away that parking here is BAD. The lady that picked up the phone was very friendly and helpful when ordering. I'm not an expert in Portuguese cuisine at all but she was able to help navigate the menu and answer all my questions. I ended up going for the Fried Fish (Flounder) Lunch Special with yellow rice and vegetables. It also came with a choice of soda or water for a very reasonable total of $12.80 cash. I was very satisfied with the portion size and overall value. The fish was not rubbery and the vegetables were not overcooked. The dish also came with two different types of sauces, one barbeque and one chimichurri. For me, the sauces really helped with the flavoring. OTHER INFO -There is a rewards program. You get 1 point for every dollar you spend. I'm scanning door dash and boom PEPE'S pops up and boy did I have a treat! The portions were out of this world, the food was still hot and everything was so good. I got the Half order of Rotisserie Chicken and the Beef Rib plate. When I opened the lid I knew it was going to be good it looked beautiful. The chicken was so moist & juicy with a bunch of flavor. It literally fell off the bone the tenderness was out of this world. The Arroz Chaufa rice was the perfect side dish reminds you of an Asian fried rice but you get that Hispanic flair. The veggies were broccoli & carrots I love me some steamed veggies and I had no problem with them at all. The Beef Ribs had a nice grill taste and they were perfectly seasoned. They were firm but had great chew, a perfect cook in my book! I don't know what the green sauce they gave me was but man it was fire, it had a little bit of spice and a strong cilantro flavor. I want to love this place I really do. The staff is pleasant, service is quick but the food is not all that. When you hear about Peruvian Chicken, you automatically think your mouth will be bursting with flavor. Not here. So I've kept ordering from this place in hopes that some way, some how, the cook has been changed or maybe they were having a bad day and next time will be better. I usually get the whole platter for 25 bucks and extra stuff in case I don't feel like cooking and can save for leftovers. The first time I ordered the Short Ribs with Chicken, Rice and Salad. The Short Ribs were decent, they were grilled, the chicken was bland, no flavor, not on the skin or anywhere. It was dry. The Rice taste like boxed rice or parboiled rice with no flavor. The salad was amazing with the salad dressing. I ate the heck out of my salad. The sauce that comes with the chicken is not your traditional Aji Verde sauce. Their sauce is Yellowish in color and does not have heat. Its meh.... nothing to rave about. The 2nd time I ordered the Beef Ribs, Fries and Salad. That day I was not trying to have food disappoint me so I went with what you cant mess up. Grilled meat, Frozen Fried French Fries and a Salad. I bought a chicken empanada as well. It was dry and bland. The 3rd time is a charm. I ordered Shrimp al Ajillo. But the sauce was green and didn't have a garlic kick at all. We also ordered Pork Ribs since I gave up Beef for Lent and the Chicken again. The ribs were tasteless, the chicken was tasteless but the salad was a hit. Im done with this place. I gave them the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves. I might as well say I want to throw $50-$60 down the drain, let me order from Pepes. I really wish Palacios Del Pollo didn't close its doors. That was some bomb chicken right there. My expectations were really high for Pepe. Wow... what a disappointment. I have not written a review in a long time. And do not like to write bad reviews. This one is actually bothering me so much that I decided to let people know the attiitude of this estabishment. I must mention I spoke to what I believe was the owner. Next I must mention that the food is delicious. I've been patronizing Pepe's for years. There are 2 BBQ take out places I like however my usual choice is Pepe's because the sauces for the food are the best out of any. My go to is a whole BBQ Chicken and my 2 sides are vegetable and salad to keep the calories low. The peruvian green sauce is great but can be hot and I mix it with the most delicious salad dressing that comes with the salad. You can drink the stuff it is so good. I also on holidays sometimes order catering style and and get 4 chickens and salad and veggies for a large amount of people. I also always order extra dressing. Here's is where the annoying part comes in. They used to give you extra dressing if you asked for free. Small individual plastic cups which was great. Then I guess so many people asked and they decided to charge.....I had no problem with that because they are in the business to make money and shouldn't give away extras for free. Then I found out they sell the dressing in pints plastic containers like the kind you get a Eppe Essen for cole slaw or Nanas for soup. It was 16 ounces for $5.00 so I always ordered that. Then I noticed the containers got smaller and the price stayed the same. I had no problem with that what with inflation and such a lot of places do that. So now you get about 12 ounces for $5.00 and I always ordered that. So yesterday I go to place a order and there is no item for the dressing. I call them and they say they changed it to a bottle and it is called yellow sauce bottle. It was now $8.00 for a bottle so I ordered that. Well to my surprise when I got it it was a tiny bottle, had to be about 7 to 8 ounces....ouch!!!! I was so annoyed that it now went up $3.00 and they give you at least 4 ounces less. It would have been one thing to keep it at the same price and lower the amount but this is crazy. I decided I needed to let them know of my dissapointment how they did this but the owner did not care. He was only concerned about his great new bottle because "people didn't like the plastic containers". And how these "sell better" even though there is way less product and so much more expensive. I told him that is ridiculous why do people care if it's in a bottle or plastic container? Anyway being the great customer I have been for many years he did not care. I told him I though that was a bad business practice but it's his business and he can do what he wants... but it has to be off putting to others and not just me. So I am letting you know to beware. They have expanded the take out place so maybe he can't afford it and is trying to recoup in other ways. No reason that can't offer both choices a cheaper plastic container and or the more expensive fancy bottle. I rather have more product at a less expensive cost. It's good business. I'm an advocate for their great food....I am not an advocate for getting over charged for a product especially in a sneaky way. read more
