Food ok... be careful with price gauging! So I've been to this establishment many times and like many of you, I've ordered without really looking at the prices. So today I was more attentive. I asked the price of the full Pork ribs. She says $25. I said I don't want any sides so she said "that's $2 less". I asked how much is the half? She said $18 So I said I wanted the half with no sides.. the price$19 While I wait I started to look at the menu board. I discovered the whole rack of pork Rivas was $18. Half, $10. Minus the $2. Would not recommend. It had a lot of potential! The meat both in burger and sandwich were great. But! They did not get either sandwich right! Burger was missing onion. The sandwich was missing peppers and it had onion on it! Which I get heartburn from and made a point of not picking as a topping. It appears that we've found a nice little hole in the wall place that sure can pack a punch with their Peruvian rotisserie chicken and bbq pork ribs! Very excited about this one here. Dropped by just to try it out an I was not disappointed! Thy are quite generous with their portions and the prices are decent. I will likely be coming back for more - and bringing people with me next time! $13 for a combo meal, extra side of plantains and a drink. Combo - Got a 1/2-sized chicken and pork ribs combo. The ribs had a nice bark, and the meat right on the bone was a little tough and thin, but as you got to the meatier part beyond the end of the bone, the meat was juicy and very flavorful. The chicken was a breast/wing quarter. Despite having the white meat, the chicken was not dry but also juicy. They also had a homemade mustard-based green (pepper/tomatillo?) sauce that complemented the chicken VERY well. I got yellow rice and beans as my 2 sides, and I'd say the beans were EXCELLENT! Rice was pretty standard, but when combined with the beans and flavorful meat, just very good all around. Fried plantains - I'm no expert in these here, but I can tell you a couple things - they are GOOD! A nice mix of hot (temperature), sweet, sticky/gooey, almost like just eating dessert early with your meal. Not a huge quantity for $3, but with the amount of food you get for $8, really not worth complaining THAT much - because it's not like I really could eat much more. Drink - pick your option of snapple or some other tea brand - or if you're picking up or dining in with more people, they have 2 liter bottles for $2.50. And if you still had any doubt that this is a legitimate peruvian bbq place, you will find Inca Cola in their refrigerators. Doubt no more. Come here when you have the chance. Nothing fancy. I don't write reviews that often and only when a place deserves it. This place has terrible service. This is the first and last time I will order from this place. I called for a delivery around 12 PM. The woman who took my order was so impatient with me because I wanted to make sure she got my card number and my address right so I asked her to repeat. I wanted to leave a tip for the driver on the card and she hurriedly said, "Ok how much?" I took a short pause to calculate how much the tip would be and she said, "Ay yayay...hurry up!" I don't care how good their food is...assuming that it's even that good. To answer the phone and ask customers what they want - it's not that hard. To get impatient should the customer asks questions or pause to consider how much tip YOU ARE GIVING them is uncalled for. For a place that charges $18 for a chicken and pork combo (6 pieces of pork medium sized pork ribs and not even half the chicken!!) without anything on it is ROBBERY! 6 pieces of sweet plantains for $4!!! I had to order food for a house guest while I was not around and this was the nearest (and I'm assuming quickest) option to my house. The Jalea/calamari a $20 dish was inedible, it only had 3 shrimp which was over cooked as well, 1 over fried and over breaded little Neck clam, there was no octopus only hard over cooked rubbery calamari you couldn't chew I asked for roccoto (red pepper hot sauce, ) and Huancaina sauce (sauce for potatoes) instead they gave me, 4 sauces for Rotisserie chicken that I didn't ask for and only 2 small (Huancaina sauce) and 2 not even small half full containers of Roccoto sauce. As usual, my coworker and I sought out a new restaurant to try for lunch near our job and once again, we are displeased with what West Orange has to offer. We were excited to try Pepe's BBQ because of the great yelp reviews, proximity to our job and because I love Peruvian food, for its diversity and flavor. Oh, and my coworker was craving French fries. I had the Argentinian sausage over rice and beans lunch special ($7). It was a good price for a lot of food but the rice and beans were very dry. The sausage was ok, but maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. My coworker had a chicken empanada ($4), he said it was okay, small order of French fries ($3) and flan ($4), which he really enjoyed. Overall, the regular menu prices are a bit steep for the portion size and being a small BBQ spot. To be honest, I hope we just made bad menu choices and the rest of the food is a lot better because it's so close to work. I guess I expected more from a Peruvian restaurant. I'll probably give this place another try just to taste the rotisserie chicken. This place should also have more diversity on their lunch menu so patrons can try traditional Peruvian dishes in smaller portions at a reasonable lunch price. read more

If your looking for an abundance of low quality cuts of meat that are over-cooked, then this is certainly an option. The ribs are incredibly fatty, the steak is often extremely tough and over cooked. The Maduros (sweet plantains) also were a disappointment as they were fairly burnt. Agree with other reviewers about the cost being incredibly reasonable for the quantity of food, but it certainly makes sense when you see the quality of what you get. if your stomach turns at the thought of crappy buffets like Golden Corral, then this may not be the place for you. On the positive, the rice and beans are done well and they have this awesome yellowish sauce that is delicious. We have had Peruvian food many times and Pepe BBQ is one of the best. We ordered the rotisserie chicken which was moist and tasty. It came with this creamy garlic sauce that was amazing!!! I think it is also their salad dressing. I normally don't finish the salad but the dressing made it! We also got the beef Arroz Chaufa which was a tasty fried rice. Pepe's BBQ has a affordable lunch special but the food seems to be lacking flavor and taste. Coming from a Peruvian background it is pretty easy to tell that this place is missing the Peruvian flavor. I had their 1/4 "pollo a la brasa" with rice, French fries, and black beans. The beans were great but the fries were obviously straight out the freezer while the chicken didn't taste good at all and the rice tasted like cardboard. The first time was Salmon which was super dry, second was garlic chicken which was ok, and this time was garlic shrimp and vegetables which the garlic shrimp was watery and bland. This is hands down one of my favorite places to eat when craving Spanish food. It also helps that's in on my way home from work and I know the menu inside out lol. I would recommend ordering over the phone and then picking it up - as it saves time. If you are a first timer - any of the lunch specials are fantastic. My family has been ordering from Pepe's since they first opened in West Orange. We normally order the chicken and ribs platter, with sides of rice and veggies. I love their bbq sauce and the hot sauce they make is delish. I am also a big fan of their sandwiches, the grilled chicken particularly. On weeknights when nobody in the house feels like cooking, but we don't feel like eating out- and regular take out won't suffice, this is the place we go to. P.S. I think the reviewer who wrote the negative review must be the first person I know who's gotten sick from this place. Pretty good food at a good price, except for the empanadas. Those things are tiny for the $3 or 2/$5 price point. Had the lomo saltado here twice. Very good flavor both times, but the beef was a bit tough the first time around. Other than that, it's an incredible deal for either the half or the whole. Both times I've had two full servings from the half. My friend got a whole, and that thing looks like you can feed at least 4-5 people with it. Service was also good. Had a small laugh when they mistook me for a Spanish speaker then found out I was a Filipino. Apparently, they're Pacquiao fans! read more
