When Pepe's first opened I frequented the establishment as it was the best bbq for the price in the area. Unfortunately the rice has become somewhat bland and sad looking, the ribs are mostly fat (so i now avoid them completely), and placing an order for delivery and getting anything extra you ask for (sauce, napkins, ketchup) is a futile effort. On the upside is a good portion of food for the price and a flavorful well cooked chicken in the combo meals (avoid the chicken sandwiches). I definitely do not order from Pepe's very often anymore unless it's spur of the moment due to the proximity to my house but when I want quality in product and service I definitely go elsewhere. read more

Food is consistent and it's pretty good. A little pricey but the portions are huge. Either you'll eat for days or feed a troop. Definitely try the empanadas, the fries and the rice are wonderful and I absolutely love the chicken. Can't go wrong with the pork ribs either. I'm not a big fan of the fish options and I personally do not like plantains but a friend loves them. Oh and I love the veggie sides! It's a great choice for takeout and the delivery (depending) is usually consistent and timely. The place is kind of small and parking is a huge pain. Solid Peruvian restaurant in the area. If you can't tell, the actual place is pretty small -- as in four-tables-only small. It takes up a corner spot in a little plaza, so if you aren't paying attention, you will miss it. The door was open when I stopped by for lunch and I saw a couple of bugs crawling on my table. It's a bit annoying, but then again, closing the door would be a bad idea too (it's kind of warm inside). Lomo Saltado ($14): When it comes to portions and price, I'd say it's worth it. You get a generous scoop of yellow rice, plenty of tender beef, and fresh French fries in your dish. That's the thing with Peruvian restaurants or all South American restaurants -- they serve huge portions for a great price. Thus, you will leave full. Taste wise, the yellow rice was okay. I like how they used the large grain rice, a popular choice with Turkish restaurants too. It wasn't salty or greasy. As for the beef and French fries, I'm a bit torn. While I love the tenderness of the beef and do enjoy the soy sauce base marinade for it, I think the tomatoes altered the dish a little. The natural sweetness just doesn't match with beef; the sweetness of the onions, however, was just right. As previously mentioned, the beef is tender and most of the vegetables mixed with it were nice and crisp. There's a spicy green and white sauce on your table -- add that on everything. I avoid adding sauce to dishes like this, but not only was the sauce really good, it did a great job of covering up the taste of tomato for me. Pepe's BBQ is known for its rotisserie chicken and ribs, so I might make my way back here another day to see how much I like their specialties. read more

Great food, enormous portions at a reasonable price. They deliver to nearby Kessler Institute and call you when they are in the lobby. The wait was not too bad. Our first order was dinner for three people: 1/2 order chicken & pork rib combo w/ black beans & fries ($10), 1/2 order pork & rib combo w/ rice & beans ($12), 1/2 order rotisserie chicken w/ salad & veggies ($10). When you get this amount of food for such a low price, perhaps its best to wait at least 24 hours before writing your review ;-) At any rate - I'm writing this immediately after the meal, so assuming no surprises tonight or tomorrow - this review will be pretty indicative. The food is good... not great, but good... Pork chops were way past 'well done' and the meat in general would have enjoyed less rice - but no real complaints. If you have to feed a group - this is a GREAT choice. Portions are BEYOND big with more rice sent over than would be needed by an army. I ordered online through the website and everything arrived as requested. Of note is the rotisserie chicken, beef and pork ribs. We had delivery, the wait was reasonable and the food was delicious. Lots of food and plenty of leftovers. Kids had chicken fingers the adults had chicken and steak salads. The empanadas were delicious and the fried plantains were so yummy! One drawback was that they didn't send plastic utensils or napkins but overall we will definitely order from here again. read more

Consistently excellent Peruvian BBQ. The ribs have great 'bark', the chicken, chops and steaks are juicy, even the condiments are excellent; their mustard BBQ sauce is singularly excellent, as is their description-defying salad dressing. I immediately contacted the store and was assured the corresponding emergency dental work would be covered and/or reimbursed. Weeks later I have received no such reimbursement. This place is officially fired. I enjoy a few items on their menu, however, I don't think they have ever gotten my order correct when I gotten delivery from them. This last time took the cake. I ordered for myself and a co worker. Well, the woman to took my order misunderstood and I was short an order. I expected her to fix it, without charging me anything extra, since I was now inconvenienced and would be having to wait for the delivery driver to go back and get the additional order. First she said she would not charge me then asked if I would be paying cash or credit for the additional order that she screwed up to begin with. Usually I am very patient and understanding that mistakes happen, but this place seems to make it a habit. Took them an hour and a half (and a phone call) to deliver my order, and when it came it was cold. The flan was upside down and the syrup seeped into the bag. This is one of my favorite local Peruvian cuisine in West Orange New Jersey. The pricing is very reasonable and they give you very generous portions and I always have an opportunity take home later with me to have the leftovers for dinner. Hmm. I've just started going to Pepe's in West Orange about 10 months ago, though I've known of the place in West Orange for about 3 years now I guess, as I frequent the Chinese place next to it. Anyway, as mentioned I finally tried it about 6 months ago, and have held off writing a review of it until I had eaten there at least 8-10 times. Not sure about the a couple reviews that can be found, but the food is excellent there, I mean absolutely delicious, made home style. Mind you, I've not had the entire menu - primarily the Pork & Beef Ribs, Rice & French Fries, Lomo Saltado & the Peruvian style steak served with eggs - they offer more of course but not had everything Never had a problem with portion size, etc. Actually, it's quite a value - especially $19 large rib order with a choice of 2 sides... it's a full 2 meals, at least. So you get 2 home made delicious Peruvian BBQ meals for about $10 a piece. Not sure how one goes wrong in that scenario. Watch your receipt when ordering for delivery. There are "extra" charges. For instance, "Free Delivery to West Orange" ---stated on the menu--- will incur a $2 delivery fee. When I call to complain, they say, "Oh, next time, we won't charge you extra, OK"? No, not OK. "Oh, well, the manager is at the bank right now, he can't talk to you." Terrible service. Ordered online at 8pm today and the delivery was scheduled for 8:45. At 10pm still don't have my order after calling 3 times and being given a variety of excuses. 1) the driver is new and got lost, really it's 2015 every cell phone has gps or can access the Internet. The owner never offered to give me a discount or anything and finally after my 3rd call she just blames the driver for being slow and he's giving her a hard time. While I can understand that you have to offer to make it right for your customers BEFORE the 3rd phone call when the driver is 1 hour 15 mins past the scheduled delivery time. We picked up food from here the other night and I have to say it was awesome!!! and we have ordered from here a bunch of times before and the food is usually consistently good, not great... However Their rotisserie chicken is absolutely awesome! Honestly it's probably one of the best I've ever had.....And the other night all the things we ordered were fantastic! We got a combination plater of ribs, sausage, grilled chicken and pork and it was all great barbecue. We were very impressed! Ordered food from here finally and was very glad I did. I ordered the chicken and beef combo with rice and bean and my wife had grilled tilapia with rice and beans, and tostones. this is only the second time we've ordered in from Pepe's and I wonder why we don't do it more often! We got the whole garlic chicken, very garlicky but delicious. The sides were rice [ perfectly cooked, nice veg inside] and salad. Loved the dressing for the salad, The only way it could have been better was if it was served in a plastic container instead of a foam box. We also got a side of sweet plantains that were delicious. I've never been inside the place. I hate that parking lot, an accident waiting to happen but I will definitely order in again soon. Next time I might even try the ceviche! read more

This has become our go- to on nights we don't want to cook. I love the pork ribs and the garlicky sauce- I want to put it on everything! Shrimp in garlic, chicken, tostones, and beans are good too. Not worth the money, I ordered a full order of ribs which should be a full rack-15 pieces. Received my order, I have 8 half pieces of rib not a full strip of rib a half strip- what a waste!!!
