I had the Bistec a la Pobre ($22) -- a perfectly-marinated hanger steak served over generous portions of french fries, white rice topped with a freshly fried egg, and a side of grilled sweet plantains. YUM! The flavors were absolutely spot on. My dining companion loved her Pollo Saltado ($19) -- a generous portion of tender, boneless marinated chicken sauteed with onion, peppers, and tomato served over french fries with a side of white rice. We found this restaurant by luck. We were at a cafe nearby and we were hungry for something different. Glad to have stumbled upon this one. The restaurant is very clean, beautiful plants and our severe was very sweet and attentive. The owner greeted us as we were paying our bill and thanked us for our visit. Very sweet man as well. We ordered two chicken plates and chicha water. The best chicken fried rice I have ever had hands down and the portion was very big. Enough for another dinner next day. Such a cute place. Very clean very friendly. Gives authentic & warm vibes and it's BYOB. Met the owner Don Freddy! who's super sweet!!! Such a great host. Was around the area and wanted something different. Couldn't have meat today and they were able to do the green spaghetti dish with shrimp instead of the usual steak. :) he recommended the soup with chicken (going to taste the broth but I've never tried Peruvian soup before), and their purple corn drink (highly recommend) which I also never had. The soup (pic below) is so good with that squeeze of lime and the Peruvian hot sauce (it's not that spicy but gives the soup EXTRA flavors that my mind and heart is so grateful for! Visited Peru Chikann on a Sunday with the family for my Mom's birthday. From the outside, the location looks modest, since it's in a strip mall with a decent parking lot, but walking inside the decor was warm, colorful and inviting. Staff had a large table set up for us and were friendly answering our questions about the menu. (Heads up: There's a little wait since food is made to order. But no complaints here since it's a great place for a chat and leisurely meal.) We had mussels and calamari appetizers and seafood, chicken and steak entrees. Everyone enjoyed their meals, commenting on how everything was well made and flavorful. We finished the meal with desserts, freshly made fried dough with sweet sauce and flan that came with a candle and birthday song. We came again, bringing my daughter this time. We tried a few different things and truly enjoyed them all. My daughter tried the purple corn juice, delicious. For appetizers, we had the beef empanada and quarter roasted chicken. Delicious! For entrees, I got the ceviche based on the recommendation from the other customer last time, and it was so good, great flavor with varieties of seafood including crab. My daughter had the Tacu Tscu b/c it was so good last time. My husband had the Entrana. We all enjoyed our dinner very much! If you like Peruvian food, you should try this place. Don't be misled by the review rating. Hillsborough's restaurant scene is terrible so it makes sense why very basic, bland and flavorless food is being given this rating. Honestly the food is terrible and very expensive. You can get much better food, lots of choices and great town experience in neighboring towns in Somerville, Bridgewater, Princeton and even Flemington and New Brunswick. NJ has a lot of good Peruvian food places as well. Don't waste your money here. read more

The food I ordered seemed ordinary. The beef strips were dry/overcooked. I did however enjoy the flavor of the sauce with the onions. They described steak cut fries. I found French fries at the bottom. The sauce saved them though and they weren't too soggy. I sort of questioned why they provided rice along with it since french fries are a starch too. The green sauce added to the flavor when I added the entree over the rice. The sweet plantains didn't taste sweet. Maybe they should fry up ripe plantains instead. The cashier was nice and served up a hot meal to go. The dining area was pleasant to see with cloth covered tables and tall water glasses. I may return some day and choose a table. I gave 4 stars because they serve the to-go packaging with black plastic. Somehow they didn't get the memo that black plastics contain flame retardants. I've heard so many good things about this restaurant. It didn't disappoint. We ordered the skirt steak which came with rice/ beans. The rice/ beans were unremarkable but flavor in the steak made up for it. The steak was also a good size- enough for 2 meals. Owner is extremely friendly & very customer oriented. The waitress doesn't speak much English but did a good job understanding our requests & was very attentive. BYO always a plus. He suggested we try the papas rellena appetizer which was a special that day.I'd seen it on menus before but never ordered it. It was good. Then we had our usual roast chicken with the works. The chicken meets a high standard and the French fries are very good.The owner recommended we have picarones for dessert. If you're up to it I'd recommend getting them.
