We've been dining at Pepe's on our yearly trips to Cozumel for the past 10 yrs, forcing myself to accept their recent inconsistencies on service and food. We were a party of 5 entertaining a guest for dinner. I made the reservation online requesting 7:30 p.m. window seating in July for an August dinner. I received confirmation from Jose. Upon arrival there was no window seats available (oddly enough they had seated a gentleman at a window seat, seated for 6, (Go FIGURE). I stated to the hostess that I had requested a window table a month ago. She then opened the private dining room for us which was stifling hot and had to be cooled down the waiter to serve that room was very disinterested and disregarding toward us. We ordered cocktails, normally the bar makes an excellent Cosmo. this time the first martini cocktail glass was 1/2 full, when I ordered another it came full but dark red like they just poured cranberry juice in a glass, I sent back and came back with the same glass of cranberry juice. Then I requested to add more Vodka and then they came back with a glass of vodka unknown to me it was Belvedere Vodka, which needed not to be for a Cosmo until I got the charge on the bill $$. Moving on to the food. There are "2 quality" of beef choices: Premium and Regular. 4 of the dining guest ordered the Regular priced steaks only to be told "the kitchen is out of their choices" and that the premium beef selection was the only option. Note: all the beef ordered was requested to be done medium rare. I ordered the Creamy Mushroom Pasta. When the food came 2 of the steaks came out perfect 1 of them less than perfect and 1 well done (not to mention all the gristle on the "Premium Choice Steak), and to note: the Mash Potatoes that sat on the plate like a potato soup. There was also a request of French Fries instead of Mash Potatoes that finally came after asking 2 times and after everyone was almost done eating. My pasta was under cooked at the ends, stuck together and when I asked for grated cheese it was never delivered as I sat waiting and waiting as my pasta got cold. The bill was a hefty bill and was did not want to make a stink about the food and drinks because we were entertaining a guest... sorry so many other places, will NOT be back next year or recommend this place. The only reason that Pepe's is a 4 and not a 5 is because they just didn't have enough servers. Our server had a ton of tables and was making their table side Caesar salads, which was a 5 minute ordeal. Hiring a "Table side" guy that just did banana's Fosters/Caesar salads would probably go a long way here. That being said, the man was affable, he was just clearly overworked. This review is in two parts. The first is my meal, then "Other peoples meal". Pepe's food is just "Better" than most meals I had in Cozumel. The Tuna tartar was quite good, though not as chilly as I'd like. The Risotto and scallops were good, but "Cool", but that's partly because of my counter parts (although a good chef would have all the items ready at the same time). The banana's Foster was as extravagant as the presentation at Brenan's in New Orleans. The Caesar salads were made table side, it was a lovely presentation. Now, my counterparts ordered their steaks.... Well Done. UGH. You can't pick your friends tastes. Anyway, the waiter brought out their shoe leather, and it was still quite pink in the middle. So it was sent back. Came back, and it was still pink. Sent back again, and finally my friend just gave up. In short, if you want a well done steak, order the chicken. For real. Pepe's is a lovely restaurant on the second story, overlooking a beautiful landscape. Perhaps they were just short staffed that day. I have been coming to Pepe's grill for years - it was pricey but the tableside service and quality of the food offerings made it my one must-do. Well, no more. Although they have upgraded the building, the menu offerings were minimal. The food, however was AWFUL!!! The waiter didn't know what a scotch& water was, the grilled lobster tails were tough and the only saving grace was the grilled asparagus. $170 (american) later we left disappointed and will NEVER go back. I had made a reservation about a month in advance for our 30th wedding anniversary. I asked if they had a good seafood selection and they responded that they did. I had asked for a window seat also and they said that they would try. We arrived almost an hour early on this day as we were shopped out and tired. We were escorted to the second floor and seated along the window overlooking that waterfront. The server identified me through our reservation and stated that they prepared a special dinner for two for us. The meal was fabulous and the service was outstanding. Carlos and the group made our dining experience and anniversary a very memorable one. When we come back we will definitely eat here again. read more

We were looking for a cool comfortable dining experience for lobster. We were sat next to the window and could see all the outdoor activity. Arrived around 8:00 pm. Our waitress was Avry. She was very friendly. The bus boy staff however were not friendly. One young bus boy brought our food out and stomped away never making eye contact. He simply left it sitting there ! Felt lots of tension between staff toward Avry. My Marquita was tasty and well crafted. Lobster was scrumptious and Avry did a great job of making our Caesar salad table side. Beautiful, elegant ocean front dining. We were very satisfied with the food and service. Our waitress was a lovely young lady from California who was very helpful with our food and wine choices. All in all, it is a very nice restaurant to enjoy the scenery and higher end food choices. We all had steaks and seafood and it was all cooked to perfection. This is not a restaurant for children. Only down fall was the conversion of prices from pesos to USD, but this happened all over the island. read more

The food was very salty and not tasty. When we said that to the waiter, he just said ok, and walked away (we expected a replacement or another suggestion from him). The sea food platter was overcooked, and again very salty, and to our surprisment, we weren't told it's a dish for two people until one minute before it was served. We went here the other night for dinner and really enjoyed our experience. The food was excellent, I ordered the fish of the day and my companion ordered the lobster. Both were fantastic. The waiters were very professional. The ambiance and the view were exceptional, we were able to watch the sunset from our table which was lovely. If you're in Cozumel for vacation, I highly recommend you have a meal at Pepe's. read more

They have a vast selection from seafood, burgers and some of the local dishes. I can't say enough that the staff is AMAZING. The atmosphere is the best i've seen in Cozumel since we arrived in Thursday, we will definitely dine here again before we leave. read more

This has been our favorite restaurant in Cozumel for the past 15 years. Although it has gone through some changes in the past few years. The constant has been the quality of the food and the impeccable service..Shout Out to Miguel and Baltazar who have treated us like royalty and family each and every time we have been there with them. Pepe's menu ranges from steaks., to seafood and chicken . The Oysters Rockefeller are outstanding and served on a bed of heated rock salt. The Surf and Turf is also excellent. I have never had a bad meal here. They will even accommodate off menu items for regulars who are not willing to try the newer items LOL. I pay this place a visit whenever I come to Cozumel ,for me it's not complete without dining at Pepe's read more

Pepe's is a pretentious overblown steak house with a few well done items on the menu. First the caesar salad is quite good and prepared at table side ( the only glitch this last time was the one waiter had to constantly leave his salad duties to tend to other customers as they seemed to be short staffed.) The meat is not prepared correctly and comes to the table grey and rubbery. The bread is inedible. pepe's has not mastered the art of fine dinning and only pretends to do so In more sophisticated quarters it would not last a week! read more

The negative reviews here really confuse me. As someone who lives in a major metropolitan city and dines out frequently, I found Pepe's to be outstanding. In fact, we had a table of 6 discerning eaters who all agreed this was our best meal yet in Cozumel. Warm, genuine service, excellent table-side Caesar salad, and perfectly-seasoned steaks and lobster. Came out to approximately $50 per person with tip- more than reasonable. (Note: only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that our steaks were all a bit under-done). Would happily return any time. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Cozumel. I have been numerous times and this is a must have on each visit. Today I had the surf and turf, while the turf was a bit tough to cut, the taste was a delight. Others in my group tried the lion fish and it was fabulous. read more

If you ever come here you MUST eat here. Atmosphere is amazing... They play Childish Gambino, Drake, etc. The food is exceptional from the oysters to the coffee and desserts! This place is AMAAAAAAAAAZEBALLS. We came here for my sisters birthday and they gave us a complimentary flaky soft beautiful cheesecake. If I could give this negative stars I would. This was THE WORST EXPERIENCE. It was Valentines and at the time this restaurant had a 5 star review. My boyfriend and I made a reservation well before. Originally we wanted an 8:30p.m. reservation but he told us they only had a 9pm available. We showed up 15 minutes early to check in and the host who took down our reservation was no longer there and had put us down for 8 p.m. instead. Because of how late it was we decided to wait for a table to open up instead of looking to go elsewhere and were treated rather poorly during our wait because we were "late." It took 50 minutes for us to be seated and the food was not up to par. Our appetizers didnt show up until 45 minutes after being seated and entrees took another 45 despite it being nearly empty at that time. The vegetables were clearly microwaved, the meat was frozen and thawed out improperly creating a very unpleasant texture and the lobster was rather flavorless as well. The manager told us he would give us our bottle of wine complementary but when we recieved our check to no surprise it was still at full price. The communication between the employees and professionalism was definitely lacking. I would not suggest anyone eat here. read more

I ordered their premium quality ribeye steak medium rare what they served was an over cooked medium well done sirloin that was slightly thicker than 1/2 inch. I tried to eat it but it was, no kidding 3/4 gristle and the rest was very tough. Normally I would have had them take it back and replace it but it was a group of us and didn't want to distract from the fun. I did show the waiter it wasn't edible and the pile of gristle he happily removed it and left it on the bill $30. So if want a good steak go somewhere else Cozumel has many great restaurants just not this one. read more

Horrible! We got right in to the place fast, but that was the only thing that was fast tonight. Every step was an eternal wait between courses. First, the drinks were fair but certainly watered down. We did get our apps, but they were only fair. We were told they had just run out of the house Caesar salad. It's a house specialty - how do you run out! We didn't get our entrees for about 100 minutes after we ordered! My son's steak was as rubbery as a condom! The fish platter was just as rubbery! I had to ask for the potato that we were supposed to get with it - plain as Jane - no butter, sour cream, etc, just a baked potato! The best - my wife's lobster crepes had a large piece of paper in it!!! So waiting for the frustratingly long time just to get crappy food. I actually had to ask the waiter to not charge us for the paper crepe! No comped drinks/ desserts, or anything! The tables around us had the same problems! There was a large table next to ours with about 12 people, who had to send back their gray steaks, and had the table served 3-4 people at a time. When we left, people there had been eating for 20-30 minutes while the majority of the table hadn't been served! We went down to talk to the manager. I told him it had to have been one of the worst dining experiences I ever had, and he honestly could have cared less! I told him my wife waited 40 minutes to get her mojito, which we had asked for 3-4 times, and his response - you should have asked sooner!!! What a disappointment. Saw the 5 star reviews, but not the small # of reviews overall, "small n problem" as my stat nerd gf would say. Quirky: as each dining party ascended the steps to the dining room, they were announced by the hostess ringing a bell (which I think now must mean "more suckers on the way up!")--impressive surroundings, polished marble floors. Great bread basket with very cold herbed butter. Good appetizer of shrimp & mushroom casserole, served with tortillas, but overpriced at $15 and change. Entrees fell down. Gf's enjoyment of lobster crepes impacted by weird mustardy sauce--she doesn't care much for mustard, and the sauce was nowhere mentioned on the menu. Not a whole lot of lobster either...side of "roasted vegetables" was couple slices of carrot, some broccoli, calabasa, and maybe 1/2 dozen green beans, unseasoned/unsauced & stone cold. My fettuccine frutti di mare "sautéed with white wine & olive oil" was actually drowned in goopy Alfredo-like sauce, completely overwhelming what frutti there were, and again, there weren't many--two of the biggest mussels I've ever seen (do not like having to cut mussels in half to eat them), maybe 3 smallish scallops, couple shrimp, bit of calamari & some disintegrating fish. I diligently did my best to fish out all the protein from the soupy mess, & left most of it. "Lime pie"--was expecting something like the classic we have in USA--instead, it was more like lime sorbet in graham crust, directly out of the freezer and not appearing very home made at all! Table behind us ordered steaks, I heard one guy say "it would have been better if it was cooked", and a girl said hers was tough & chewy. Waiter a bit supercilious, maybe he would like to come back as a Parisian... We have had better dining experiences in more humble places here & look back on them fondly. Unfortunately had the worst service I have ever experienced at this restaurant tonight. We had Christmas dinner reservations for 7pm. We were early and sat at 6:45. By 8:45 we received our salads only and had to flag a waiter down for drink refills. The waiter brought the drinks and I asked if dinner was coming soon. He told me they were "just busy". By 9:30 (so 2.5 hours later) we received our meals. Our meals came in two waves. The first group was half done with the rest of dinner arrived. My medium well steak was rare and someone else's steak was 90% fat and gristle. I left the table and asked for a manager. After waiting quite some time outside the kitchen a guy saying he was the manager finally came to me. I told him the situation and he literally walked away and didn't say a word. Our waiter came over and said my steak was being removed from the bill. We asked for our bill 4 times before finding the manager again. The manager laughed in my face and said we should had left after the first hour if we weren't happy. Then he threatened to call the cops on us and escorted our party of 7 out. I asked him to please call the police and I would love to share the dining experience we just had with them. He informed us we better make sure we had all of our personal items because he didn't want to see our faces again. He refused to give us the owners name and tried to say he was the owner. Then he changed his story and said he wasn't the owner. It was awful. We filed a complaint with the tourist police. We also plan on emailing who is listed as the owner and manager on the website. I understand it was Christmas and they were very busy. The food we did receive that was edible was great. There were multiple other tables complaining as well to not only the staff but sharing their unhappiness with the other diners. Our family of 5 spent Christmas in Cozumel and had dinner at Pepe's one night because of the great reviews we read online about it. I can speak for all 5 of us that none of us would return to Pepe's and in fact, wish we hadn't dined there. We sat at a table with a great ocean view, we had a fantastic waiter who made great recommendations, and we had a delicious octopus appetizer but that's about the only good that came out of the night. What went completely wrong is the following: first, a man at the bar was obviously listening to our conversation and came to our table to chime in. He introduced himself as a supervisor at the restaurant and began trying to relentlessly sell us tours through him. We told him politely several times we already had excursions booked but he would not stop. He finally went away after about 15- 20 minutes of his wheeling and dealing attempt including showing us videos on his iPhone. Next, I ordered one of the steaks on the main menu and asked for it to be cooked medium. My steak came out completely rare (and trust me, rare is an understatement- more like completely inedible). I asked for it to be cooked a bit more but instead a whole new steak came out and it was even more rare than the first one. I cut right into the middle of it and it leaked blood everywhere! I asked to take it home to cook myself (this was over a $40 steak!)and even the waiter noticed that the steak was inedible. Both of these nuisances would not be a big deal if we weren't spending over $300 on a meal. I've never dined somewhere spending over $300 on a meal and have had a supervisor make us listen to 20 minutes of him trying to sell us tours (and going on about how the excursions we booked were not good or that we were paying too much) nor have I sent a steak back only to have it come out even worse the second time! I don't think it's unreasonable to want to be left alone and eat edible food while trying to enjoy what should be one of the nicest vacation dinners you have on your trip. Thumbs down! read more
