Gyoza, Salad for Oyakodon, complimentary miso soup with noodles
    Ashley C.

Really glad we came here when they opened because by the time we left, the whole restaurant was full! Our server was so nice, and I appreciated that they gave us paper plateware and utensils for our kids. The food came out very quickly too. If you like a lot of protein, I would recommend adding an extra portion! It was plenty for me but my husband would have preferred double amount. The oyakodon was just okay...chicken was mostly dry, but that's not the dish you want to come here for anyway. Beef pepper rice and beef pepper udon are the way to go!

Came back after years and it was nice to see their price hasn't got too much higher since inflation. Still reasonable price and service is quick. However I noticed quality has def gone down. Their portion of meat is less and sauce is not as tasty(garlic soy doesn't taste garlic just salty). Also no more black pepper ?? I rather pay more for the same taste I used to love.. unfortunately I won't be coming back anymore but if you're looking for quick & budget meal, this might be good. They also serve miso soup to everyone which was nice.

My boyfriend and I haven't been to Pepper Lunch in forever!! But, I had a craving for teppanyaki and we decided to go to Pepper Lunch. We used to go here pretty often, but stopped because we kept hearing that it went down hill. However, we went one weeknight and it was not busy at all. My boyfriend ordered #1 and I ordered #3 (Beef Udon) and a side of garlic butter. We actually really enjoyed our food and the service was really friendly! It tasted the same and we got really good service. Hopefully it stays that way!

Parking is easy, since this place is located in Milpitas square. For the food, I'd probably rather go to sizzling lunch which is basically the same thing, taste is similar, but they give way more meat.

I am absolutely saddened that they are closed. They were the OG sizzling lunch can't compare.

I'm so sad to hear that Pepper Lunch is permanently closed! Their food was amazing, their service was great, and it was a cozy little spot with affordable meals. Attached is the letter they have posted about closing the restaurant.

Service was really quick and friendly! I came by on a weekend right at opening for the dinner rush and was seated right away. We tried the onion rings as an app which were a lot better than I expected from here! The sizzling plates are standard but nothing blew me away. The eggs were placed at the bottom so it got stuck to the pan sadly. Pricing is pretty good especially for the portion! I recommend for a quick and affordable bite.

The place is located in a large plaza with other restaurants so there is ample parking. The restaurant was clean and service was good. I ordered the Beef Pepper Rice (Number 1). The beef was tender, the rice was cooked just right and their sauces went well with the dish. The only thing I feel would make it better is if there was more beef to improve the beef-rice ratio. Price was fair.

Old school no frill spot with transparent pricing and consistent quality food. The teppan style chicken and beef dishes are my go to for the spot, but you really can't go wrong with anything they have here. I love the chicken plate, because it fills me up without breaking the bank. If you are feeling fancy give the beef plates a try. It's very rare to see a place that serves good food, at a pricing point like this. Service is also quick and prompt. I would recommend you give this place a try. You won't regret it!

4.4 stars! This place is so nostalgic and has been in the community for over a decade. I have to be honest that though I live this place, we havent been here in a long time. That said, everything tastes the same and its the pepper lunch flavor that I keep comparing other places to. Everything was as I remember!!

Pepper lunch has been a family favorite for many years. We are always satisfied and it's fun to cook the meat on the hot sizzling plates. Our normal go to is the beef Yakiniku with garlic butter. Their beef pepper rice is the signature dish. I also enjoy their sizzling beef with udon and curry sauce. Service is always friendly. Small spot but homely.

Terrible service. The food truly is bland. If it wasn't for the garlic butter and garlic soy sauce the food wouldn't have any taste. The staff wasn't friendly and I was grossed out seeing the waiter wipe down tables with the same rag and then deliver food. I'm not too sure he washed his hands each time. I won't be back.

My wife had been here weeks before. We had to come here so I could validate what she was raving about. Established in 1997, the ambiance certainly felt that way, though Pepper Lunch arrived in America later by 2018. We, oddly, perused the menu via QR code, which was as current as it gets. Our server checked on us often, which was quite a feat as they were only two tasked to holding the packed fort during Saturday's lumch rush. My Beef Curry Rice plate arrived sizzling and my wife educated me that the meat was served raw. Mixing the creatively arranged plate of ingredients was key as the beef quickly changed colors from pink to "get in my belly". Though I found the dish lacking in flavor, a quick dash of the teriyaki and garlic soy sauce dispensers, and voila. I also did taste the buttery flavors of the rice during this lunch. I was full after this meal, but my wife & son had to pack their's to-go. A decent meal for me. I'm wondering why it's not counter instead of table service, but that's just me.

Is the restaurant open for indoor dining?

    Yes

Is the store open on new years for take-out?

With take out, how are the sizzling plates being served?

Exactly the same, but already cooked! Might be able to tell them how you like your meat cooked though?

Has Pepper Lunch closed now or do they have completely new hours that are not listed here? I tried calling during dinner service two Sundays ago and even tonight, but the line kept ringing and would be busy at other points.

I also tried calling during lunch times for last few days and they didnt pick up; a recent review also states they went to the restaurant twice in person during the dinner hrs and saw the place wasnt open (but w/o any notice or new hrs..)

Is this location still open for takeout?

    Why have you been closed?

Can the sizzling plates be ordered for takeout?

Yes and food will be cooked.

Will Pepper Lunch be open on New Years?

Yes、we will be open normal business hours.

That alone should tell you something All these years later, it is still just as amazing as it was back then. Same great atmosphere, same entertaining chefs, and most importantly... the same consistently incredible food. My go-to (and it will never change) is the Genji combination--filet mignon and shrimp with bean sprouts. The filet is always cooked perfectly, the shrimp is delicious, and everything on that grill just has that flavor you can't recreate at home (trust me... I've tried ). And let's talk about the extras... The salad dressing? I would pay good money for that recipe. I've tried to recreate it more times than I can count and it's just not happening. The soup is always comforting and perfect. And ending the meal with green tea ice cream? It's the cherry on top of a perfect experience. The chefs are part of the fun--they make it an experience, not just a meal. There's something so special about sitting around that grill, watching the show, and knowing exactly what you're about to get... because it's always spot on. After all these years, this is still one of my favorite restaurants ever. Not many places can say they've stayed this good for this long. If you haven't been... you're missing out.

Their vent hood was barely working, creating such heavy smoke that sitting there, I could feel the oil and smoke all over me, which was disgusting. This was not my first time having teppanyaki, but their setup and malfunctioning vent hood made it a really unpleasant experience. The most disturbing part, however, was the saltiness of all the food presented to us. There were four of us celebrating a birthday, so we ordered across all their teppanyaki menu options. It was so salty that most of us could not finish our food. The first thing they cooked was the fried rice. When I tasted how salty it was, none of us could eat it; all four of us took one bite and just could not continue. I immediately told the chef, "Please do not make the rest too salty. This is way, way too salty to eat." Nevertheless, everything else they served was still extremely salty. On top of that, the chef seemed annoyed, as if we were talking nonsense. This is definitely not a good choice. If you really like teppanyaki, I would recommend choosing a different place. The facility is old and outdated, and it is far from the best dining experience.

It's basically a very similar meal to what you'd get if you came for a normal meal, but no theatrics like the onion rings volcano, the pulsing rice heart, or utensils being thrown around in the air. And they cook the fried rice (it comes with veggie fried rice) elsewhere, because it just comes out in bowls. All that's fine - we've seen the show many times. We didn't have a reservation but got seated right away at a table with more people there for a quick lunch. A server took our order and was honest enough to say "get the NY strip" instead of the filet mignon, because the filet was the frozen and people sometimes sent it back. So we got the strip, which was pretty good. What I like is you get veggies with the meal, soup, salad, rice, so it's a complete filling meal. The chef's conversation and grill-side demeanor is pleasant and happy, and the food quality is fine. I mean the meat (even the NY strip) was just OK, didn't seem like Prime level beef, but for the price and all things considered, it was a fairly priced meal that we enjoyed.

He was super entertaining and funny and really put on a great show for us. The chef we had yesterday (we were celebrating my boyfriend's mom's birthday and my belated one) wasn't quite as interactive..but he was fast and efficient..and the food was still delicious. I always order the Samurai Treat..the six course meal with steak and shrimp. Extra garlic butter is a must! I like my steak rare..and the chef yesterday cooked it..or should I say undercooked it perfectly. The chicken fried rice here is consistently great..so flavorful and yummy. Service can be a little hit or miss at times..but the restaurant is usually busy..so it's understandable. Personally..I'd rather have a slightly slower pace server than a server who's rushing to turn the table and drop the check. It makes for a more relaxed and enjoyable dinner. It's also a halal restaurant so you'll notice this on the menu since they do not offer alcohol or pork items. One of my favorite discoveries of this restaurant is the chicken teriyaki roll. I feel like more restaurants need to offer this! I loved it! Their hibachi is flavorful and meat is tender. You get the same great flavor of a typical hibachi without having the awkwardness of a chef cooking in front of you or wreaking of food smell on your clothes when you go home. This environment is like a typical restaurant where the food comes from a kitchen in the back so it completely eliminates that. Large groups beware - This restaurant is small so and we witnessed a table of 8-10 get separated since they could not seat them together. I'm sure a reservation ahead of time would have helped this situation. Food is really great quality though and we will definitely be back!

The rice was not hot enough, or I could say, room temperature. There were a bunch of raw white onions and pickles in it, I guess they were the culprit for the room temperature rice. The onion and pickle smell and taste were just too strong that we could barely had any taste of the rice and the steak themselves. Basically, we felt like we were biting a whole white onion fresh from the grocery bag. We also ordered gyoza and chicken karaage, which I think they were frozen and reheated in microwave.
