Food was delicious and came out in a timely manner. In the beginning the servers were quick with refilling our drinks, but started to slow down through the meal. We were surprised that one person couldn't pay their bill and leave. They wanted the entire table to pay before anyone left. After speaking with the employees, that one person was able pay and leave. The menus here still have their Evanston address printed, so it looks like they were taken directly from the other restaurant. They specialize in Sichuan cuisine, just like Ichiban Sichuan and New Chengdu. Prices are quite reasonable, comparable to their competitors. The inside of the restaurant is clean, so that's a plus. Service was a bit slow, made worse by the rigid roles of the staff. The person who pours the water doesn't take orders, the person who takes orders can't bring you a new plate, etc. Ask the wrong person for the wrong thing and they'll merely reply that they'll try to find the right person for you. Food was really hit or miss. I came here as part of a large group, and the dishes we ordered spanned the full range from delicious to terrible. For a supposedly authentic Chinese restaurant, there were surprisingly a few dishes that were clearly Americanized. read more

This is one of the few descent Chinese restaurants in West Lafayette. The food was good and very large menu. I deducted 1 star for mediocre service and lack of English speaking skills. But I recommend this place for good food. The best dish they serve is definitely a hot pot. I was accompanied by a Chinese friend and ordering was easier. We selected two broths for our hot-pot, and then 3 options for meat, fish and tofu. The hot-pot was huge and flavorful. They serve with raw meat and vegetables, which you put in hot-pot, it cooks in the broth within minutes, and you can relish on it. Meat gets the taste of the broth which is full of different spices and vegetables. You can also order dipping sauce as side. Our hot-pot took around 45 minutes to arrive in busy Friday evening. But my Chinese friend suggested it's common in China to have laid back meals. So keep plenty of time in your hand if you want to try hot-pot. Other traditional dishes were served quickly. You pay at the counter usually. Don't wait for the servers to pick-up the checks. The English speaking was problem here, but I would definitely return to try different option. read more

The pale, skinny, Chinese waiter who was taking our cards actually got into an argument with one of my friends during payment, which completely ruined an otherwise satisfactory dinner. The waiter actually wanted to start a fight with my friend and threatened him to come back after getting off work at 9:30PM. I almost called his manager to come look at how terrible this restaurant's customer service is, but instead decided to write this review to warn others about what kind of deplorable people work at this restaurant and if you're unlucky enough to have them serve you. I have been there for multiple times. The first time was on the opening day thay was crazily crowded. The wait time was too long. But the food was delicious anyway. So I gave it second try that was much better and service was improved a lot. And a server told me that computer system had problem when the day opened so that the Kitchen couldn't receive any orders. They would enforce 18% tips to even a party of three, then you know how crappy the service will be. There is no motivation whatsoever to assist you when they can lay in bed counting their underserved 18% tips. They charge you extra when you pay with card, and give you 90% discount if paid by cash to avoid paying taxes (someone behind this need to be actually penalized legally). Lately, they have also restricted splitting the bill with only up to 3 cards, because the dishonest owner has "surprisingly" realized she needs to pay credit card transaction fees! But srsly, you're in a business, we pay you this much and you are supposed to be honest with customers and your practice alike. Many restaurants do this to avoid taxes, which we as co-ethnic bros may tolerate sometimes. But when you are engaged in illegal activities and still being a total douchebag at the same time, you only deserve bankruptcy. Every time we needed water or any type of request I physically had to get up and walk to someone and ask for it during my meal. When we asked for more water during one instance the staff literally laughed at us and started speaking in a different language, clearly about us, making it even more uncomfortable. Most of the time the WAITERS were sitting in a circle at a table eating, and I literally felt like I was bothering my server to ask for things like water and the check. On top of that, they included 18% gratuity in the bill when the lack of any type of service should've received no tip. We've come here a few times and every time this has happened, but this instance was the worst and I had to say something. We (a group) went to visit this restaurant on a Sunday, were there early and there were only another patron (a couple). We would not have expected to receive a service this bad, but this is what happened: 1) We requested silverware since we do not usually eat with chopsticks, but the staff member said that "silverware is still being washed." After a while, they came back with 6 spoons (enough for our group), one of them had food still sticking to the spoon. They brought us two forks and said "this is all we have." 3) Our orders were disappointing. Chicken noodles came up very oily and there were four thin cuts of chicken. The other orders came with a portion that does not reflect their prices. 2) The staff member explained that all order came with rice. They only gave us 2 bowls of rice, and we reminded them three times about our rice. Rice never came until the end of our meal. None of the staff member ever came back to our table to check our order, let alone ask if we needed anything else (including water). Later, when we voiced our disappointment, the cashier/staff member said, "Sorry" briefly, and went ahead with billing, etc. They even made check splitting a rather lengthy process and made an annoyed facial expression about doing so. By no means that our experience represented all other customers, and we would encourage you to try this restaurant for yourself because some of the food that came to other people's tables still looked somewhat appealing. I went to Peppercorns a few times when it first opened and really liked it, but it's quickly gone downhill. I went last night for an early dinner. There were 2 other groups there, and they sat us right between them. Strange, given that the entire place was empty, but ok. They didn't play any music, so all you heard was silence and the other people eating. Our food came out crazy fast. Like so fast that I was skeptical. Once I ate it, it was clear that the food had been reheated from lunch. The Mongolian Beef was so far from fresh that it was almost inedible. About 10 min after our entrees arrived, our appetizer arrived. I didn't know it was possible to screw up potstickers, but they did. The oil they friend them in was burnt, and the potstickers were still filled with hot water which would gush out when you bit into it. If this was a discount place, then all of this would be expected. But it's pretty expensive, especially given what you get for the price. Made reservations for a wedding party there. Was very disappointed in every way. They tried to seat us in a back room without air conditioning. On top of that, the tables in the room did not have any tablecloths, and were covered with stacked sheets of shiny white plastic. we requested that they change the accommodations, and staff immediately took on an attitude of how it was our fault for being picky. They reluctantly told us that they were willing to seat us in the main dining room, but then everyone promptly disappeared outside, leaving us milling around in the restaurant. When they finally came back from their smoking break, the host seemed more interested in putting on his makeup rather than trying to accommodate us. In between dabs of applying lipstick and pancake, he requested we leave. Truly outrageous and inappropriate behavior. The restaurant had only 10% of the tables full at the time we walked in on a Friday night and now we fully understand why. The service is clearly terrible and they are not interested in improving themselves. I can't imagine what the food is like there, but I would tell everybody don't even try to find out. read more

Tl;dr: terrible service even before they could seat our party. Abysmal service. We made a reservation for 15 people for a dinner the day before a wedding. The restaurant, despite knowing we were a large party coming to the restaurant, tried to put us in a room without air conditioning. When we asked if we could instead sit in the nearly empty dining room, the servers adopted a confrontational tone. They did not ever apologize for trying to seat us in a room that was even hotter than outside. When we asked to speak with a manager, one server started yelling at us and told us nobody was in charge and that we could either be quiet or get out. While we were mulling over this ultimatum, all three servers stormed out of the dining room, enraged that we had the audacity to ask for climate control, to take a cigarette break. Faced with the choice presented and the sudden disappearance of our servers, we chose to get out. Never before have I had to contend with such rude, unprofessional, and discourteous staff before even being seated. Beyond that, it's appalling that a restaurant employs so many people who fail to take responsibility for their actions. Given this culture of negligence, I cannot imagine how they run their kitchen if this is how they run their dining room. read more

Absolutely NOT!!! This was the worst experience at a restaurant I have come by in my life. Forget the poor service, lets just talk about the food. I am pretty certain me and my lovely date got poisoned from the Kung Pao Chicken (which I happen to get at every Chinese restaurant I go to so I know what it should taste like). It was not spice, which is what the waitress claimed it to be, it was either bleach or Lysol, or something they sprayed into the air trying to kill a moth. Additionally, not every piece of chicken tasted like the poison which tells me something had to accidentally gotten in there. Apart from the Kung Pao, we also got the Beef in Chilli soup, and Clear Noodle Soup. Both made me think about the poor choices I have made throughout my life. Trash. I had to call my Chinese friend to help me tell them the food was no good. Either way, poor food, poor service, and they made us pay for the entire thing. $50 gone. The food here is actually pretty good. The reason for my 3 star rating is a combination of the spectacularly poor service and the high price point. I've had hot pot here twice and I love the small, personal pots. I was very disappointed that their under stocked sauce station is an additional $2. At any restaurant, basic condiments are typically complimentary (or bundled into the menu price). But the reason I will never return is because of the service. On both occasions, my party had struggled to get simple things such as water refills. When it comes to hot pot, we typically order more items halfway through the meal but had to hunt down our server to put the order in. The mission to get our $85 check for 2 people was just as much of a hassle. Also, the automatic 18% gratuity added to all checks is interesting. I usually tip more than that so no complaints here on saving money but just a heads up because service charges can be off-putting to most. read more

I went to Peppercorns Kitchen last night for dinner with my boyfriend. The wait for a table was around 20 minutes at ~7pm. Their waiting area is very big and comfortable, and the decor of the entire restaurant was clean, modern, and just overall great. Definitely a good place for a nice date. Most of the tables seemed to sit 2-4 people. The restaurant is still setting up, so many of their dishes were not available. The waiters were great and they tried to be as helpful as they could. Everybody was very polite and great staff. Austin was particularly helpful! He answered all of our questions and was just *fantastic*. We ordered Bok Choy in Garlic Sauce and one of their "spicy" Pigs Feet dishes. The bok choy was delicious and very, very authentic. If you're used to eating bok choy, this is a pretty standard dish. Very large serving of bok choy in amazing garlic sauce that wasn't oily and a very light dish. The "spicy" pigs feet wasn't spicy at all, though the dish had plenty of red chiles and very bright orange oil. Warning, the pigs feet is chopped into smaller pieces (a lot easier to eat than a whole pigs foot!), but the bones are a bit cumbersome to eat around if you're not used to it. But the pigs feet were still plenty flavorful and a real winner. The pigs feet serving size was a bit disappointing, but that might be because we didn't want to stop eating! The bok choy was a great palate cleanser and counter to the heavier, meatier pigs feet. I highly recommend them together! read more
