We have given the Peppermill several chances over the last couple of years due to lack of restaurants in Bad Axe other than fast food. The food is "meh" at best. Omelets containing raw vegetables, crumbling fried fish, under cooked hamburger, to name a few. Then there's the staff. We tried to avoid one waitress that always seemed frustrated and sweaty. Unfortunately she served us a few times. We were there recently during lunch and our waitress came to the table for something. I looked up and noticed she had snot hanging out of her nose. If you are sick stay home. Disgusting. We will not be back. I would give zero stars. read more

When you enter it looks like the decor is from the 80's, oak tables and chairs, stained class lamps. Thankfully, no dusty curtains. We ordered one soup and salad bar. My partner said it was good. I ordered broasted chicken, mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Chicken was excellent. Slaw had a strange taste. Potatoes seemed like instant. Service was good. The place seemed clean. I was visiting up north with a friend, and she took me to the Peppermill, which is her favorite place to eat in Bad Ax. Great food and service. I was quite amazed that they gave a discount if you used cash. For sure I will return when I am back up in the thumb area. So that gave me a chance to spend some of my $2 bills. Beware if you go here 8-10 minutes before the morning Special ends and you sit there till someone takes your order at 11:01 they won't adjust the breakfast special price. It's just the principle they can override the register system if they want to. They say oh the register is fixed at the new higher price. It's not about the money it's about customer service. Now the food. This time it was the bacon not well done, last time it was overcooked eggs and undercooked bacon when still asked for well done! What an excellent dinning experience. Everyone works as a team. The owner gave us menus & drinks. Our waitress was very helpful, she guided us through the menu & explained the soup n salad bar. Service was great, all the staff was kind and helpful. I got 2 eggs over easy, side of bacon, and plain waffles. I ended up getting severely sick after leaving this restaurant (to the point where I was in the hospital and I'm still recovering). I should have noticed that everyone else that I was having brunch with ordered scrambled eggs and I was the only one with a "lower egg temperature". They said they couldn't credit my card because it is a third party company they use for on line orders and would take my info so I could have a credit for the next time. Have been coming here ever since are favorite place up here closed down. Once again all restaurants up here lack in everything. I ordered the skillet it was suppose to have grilled onions and green peppers...it didn't The eggs were suppose to be over easy, they were over hard, and the sausage that was cut up in dumped inside had to have been sitting around for a couple of days. The pancakes were rubbery. The bluberry pancakes had the bluberries just dumped on top. The server was good, they have one there that has no business working with the public, sit on the main floor and you won't have to encounter her. Used to be a place I always liked to go...But you are not welcome here, If you ask for the owner Tom McCollum (who I know), ask or complain about their food being "too salty" that we couldn't eat it (3 dinners and 2 bowls of soup), then they demand you don't come back again (a very not nice, unhelpful, cold acting manager Carissa) who said they don't and never add salt to their food (then who did/does?) her response seemed to be it comes in that way, from where? I thought everything was homemade by them...they didn't even apologize, or care, or offer a solution or refund, except not to come back again and that no one else said this to be true...IS THEIR ANYONE ELSE WHO THINKS THEIR FOOD TO BE WAY SALTY?...What about high blood pressure?, etc. Carissa said that nobody is allowed to talk to the owner Tom...Wow! So now I'm the bad guy? I used to always talk to him...he would always recognize me (us) and want to talk...I used to be a fan, we have a lot in common. It's OK. That's about all I can say. The locals come to eat and sip on coffee and argue politics. They have a soup and salad bar all the time and it's OK. They offer breakfast all day which is nice to have the option. The wait staff is hit or miss but they re usually working pretty hard (2 for the whole place). Nice and casual place. We arrived not certain they served breakfast. They do. The menu has numerous egg options including a dozen omelette varieties. There are also griddle options and pancakes. The lunch and dinner menus looked quite good with wraps, burgers, chicken and steak entrees, as well as "catches from the sea". If ever in Bad Axe, it's definitely worth checking out. By far my favorite place to eat in Bad Axe! It's very clean and has a great vibe to it. It doesn't have a bar so you don't see many obnoxious hooligans there. It's a great family restaurant! Service is great. The waitresses are very friendly and on top of everything. The food is always more than I expect;taste wise. Don't even get me started on their famous chicken noodle soup! We drove around Bad Axe looking for a place to eat and found the Peppermill, it appeared to be the only sit-down restaurant in town. It was around 1PM, I ordered a hot meatloaf sandwich, and my wife ordered an omelette, since they have all day breakfast. My meatloaf came with mashed potatoes and stuffing. I could taste the dehydrated onions and celery in the stuffing, and it tasted like it came from an instant mix. The gravy was very salty, and also tasted like it was canned or instant. The meatloaf was kind of bland, but at least it was real meatloaf, unlike the stuffing. The mashed potatoes were real though, and were actually very good. Overall, my meal was the definition of mediocre. As for my wife, she works is a cook by trade, so she knows how things work in restaurants. She said the hashbrowns were good, but she took a few bites out of the omelette, and pushed her plate to the side. It was greasy and gross. It was filled with these nasty onions, that my wife said tasted like they had been sitting in artificial butter for 2 days. She couldn't eat it. I tried it too and almost spit it out. The omelette was pretty much inedible. The waitress came up to take our plates. This was the second bad restaurant experience in 3 days in the Thumb, so we didn't say anything about the omelette. The waitress didn't even ask why my wife didn't eat it, which I would think any good server would do. We paid and left, and began our long trip back to Ohio with my wife frustrated and still hungry. I post this negative review not to be a jerk or a food snob, but because 2 out of 3 restaurants we went to in the Thumb were very bad. This is a big tourist area, and these people are sitting on a potential gold mine. If they actually served fresh food with real ingredients, they would rake in the money. As it stands now, I'm bringing my own food next time I go to the Thumb. Also, it's interesting that Yelp chose to "filter" another negative review, because that review looked similar to our experience at this restuarant. read more

There was a funky smell when I walked in and my gut reaction was to try another place. There were plenty of people eating there so I decided to give it a try anyway. Sometimes the small 'family style' restaurants have surprisingly good food. I ordered meatloaf that came with a soup & salad bar and the soup sounded good. I got chicken noodle soup and couldn't get past bite one, did not taste like chicken noodle soup at all. The salad bar would have been ok but the lettuce was not fresh and had tons of brown spots. Basically, the only thing I ate were the mashed potatoes that came with the meatloaf, I had a few bites of the way overly spiced meatloaf but would not order again. Well I wouldn't go back again so I don't really need to ponder on what items I would order. read more

Was driving thru looked on Yelp for a restaurant in the area. When we pulled in the parking lot a police car was leaving knew it must be good. Very nice and attentive waitress comfortable chairs. Today we went to the Peppermill for breakfast with our three kids under the age of 5. Our server was a lady named Sue. She was phenomenal. She was very friendly and courteous. But here is how she impressed us, she brought all the kids food first. That allowed us to cut and get the kids food ready. Then when we were almost done cutting up food and putting it in front of our kids she brought our food and then offered to help our son put some syrup on his pancakes. That allowed us to get a hot meal too. Now she did this even though the place was packed and she seemed super busy. What a champion! I even caught the manager to tell him that Sue's service was superb. I wish every server in other restaurants would know this trick. A family who eats with small children should always get kids food first. Now to the food. The farmers omelette was very good and the home made wheat bread was good. The kids all liked their Mickey Mouse Pancakes. I tried some of the kids pancakes and they were very good. My wife had a patty melt which she thought was decent. The place is very clean and family friendly. The men's bathroom has a changing table in it. Sounds silly but a lot of restaurants forget that sometimes dads have to change baby diapers as well. In summary, great service, good food and family friendly. It is no wonder why they were packed today! I also listened to the waitresses talk, they seem to work very well as a team. I heard and saw them working together to help give that quality service. We will definitely go back. read more

You might also love if here if your taste buds have been singed off in some freak accident and aren't able to tell how bad this food is. They aren't shy about disguising where their food comes from, GFS labels on everything. Their main means of cooking is with a microwave. So do yourself a favor and go to the IGA or the Walmart and pick yourself a Tombstone pizza and save yourself $20.00 and the grief of waiting for a sub-par meal. Busy 4th of July weekend. not enough help scheduled. I felt bad for the servers..they just kept smiling. Ordered breakfast. Looked good..but the sausage patties were burned on one side. The side that was down. Had an interesting conversation with the Manager who happened to be in the kitchen cooking. Nothing he could do about burned food coming out of the kitchen. No apology..no concern. He would take my breakfast off the bill. The owner of this restaurant should be very concerned that this Manager is so lackadaisical about its patrons.
