They have a tasty chili here. Go figure! The Broccoli with cheese soup is always a good stand-by, too. We picked a great time to come here, Saturday afternoon. Had the place almost all to ourselves. Two of us had salad bar, two had burgers and two just had a bowl of chili with fries. Everything tasted satisfactory and the salad eaters went up for thirds. Can't beat that! We had a snafu with the chili and some teenage server, but she corrected her mistake and gave pretty decent service. Then the manager adjusted our bill and assured us she would make this a positive for everyone involved. Very impressive. The restaurant was clean and quiet. We stopped after shopping and both my brother and I ordered a bowl of chili. I heard him say cheese no onion and I always get mine plain. When she delivered our order, mine was perfect his had onion. When we brought this to the server's attention she immediately pointed the finger at him and accused him of ordering it that way. I think the girl was 16yo. or younger. I just know that it drives me crazy when kids never take accountability for any wrong doing. We explained that he's allergic and can't eat onions. Why would he order them? The food was great, the price was great and the manager worked with us on the bill. We understand people make mistakes. Just correct them and stop jumping on the defensive. read more

Food was ok at best. Myself and my wife and dad visited there last night, 11/04/25 I got just a club sandwich and no fries. It was 13.99 just for the sandwich. My wife got a Philly cheese steak that looked like dog food when it came out. Sliced cheese and tough old meat. The salad bar had 3 empty soup containers burning with the last of their food left in them. Very gross and unclean. The service was slow, and she rarley stopped to check on us. Not to many choices up here so here we are. They have a new menu, so I order the bacon blue burger for $12.99 comes with fries. I up grade to chili cheese fries for an additional $3.99 so for a burger and chili cheese fries I'm paying $17. WTF big boy??? I can see paying that in the city for a good burger, this isn't the city and this is t a good tasting burger. I wasn't sposed to be in Bad Axe. I lost my phone service and internet, therefore my Google Maps and GPS as well, up in Port Austin and didn't have a map so instead of driving southwest down the west side of the thumb I turned straight south and ended up here. But it's a nice little town and I liked it. And it was only 15 miles out of my way. I drove up and down the main street of Bad Axe and did a little Yelp research before deciding to just eat at the Big Boy's. I got a nice waitress who worked with me so I could get what I wanted, which was a bowl of Broccoli Soup, a Slim Jim sandwich, no fries, and a piece of Strawberry Pie. The soup was very chunky and good. The Slim Jim seemed way smaller than I remembered from having it in the past, and pretty bland. I added salt & pepper. The pie was good but had an artificial topping. Strawberry Pie is best with real whipped cream, not that stuff that leaves an oily, gummy coating in your mouth. I'm giving it 4 stars mainly because I had such a good waitress (the receipt said Jessica) and because the meal hit the spot. And because there is something comfortable about going in a place you are familiar with, even if it is a chain. read more

What a pleasant surprise. We noticed driving down M-53 that the Big Boy statue out front was wearing a COVID mask. After being disappointed visiting a number of Bad Axe/Port Austin restaurants that seemed to be ignoring the COVID orders Big Boy stands out in their strict adherence. Every other table was cordoned off, everyone was masked, screens in place at the counters, etc. The hamburgers with fresh cut fries were very good, and the service friendly and attentive, and prices very reasonable. When I walked in the waiter was standing on the other side of the room and called for us to make our way over to her. When we got to our table there was food on the ground. When it was time to order I got a salad pretty mid just letuce cheese tomato and cucumber with stale croutons. Then I got a chili and it was pretty bad kinda tasted like the cans of chili for hotdogs and it didn't even come with cheese. Also the fries were cold and chewy. I know it's a bit picky but that was pretty much my whole visit. Not sure I'd come back definitely not worth the price. read more

We really like the blockbuster breakfast. It is filling and it's really hard to go wrong here. The only challenge is the sweet young blond female server forgets parts of the order and I have to remind her. Stopped in last week for lunch on my way back to PA after visiting friends in Bay City. Ordered the sourdough tuna melt. What a mistake! Midway through Ohio I had to stop for a hotel room because of my severe cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. It was the worst food poisoning I've ever had! Two nights and $200 later, I was able to drive home to PA. Usually I drive from Bay City to PA in 12 hours. I should have known better than to eat here. The place needs a good cleaning, to say the least. Michiganders are usually very nice people, but that was not the case at this restaurant. read more

My husband and I go here after his va appointments :) we love how friendly everyone is. We have been here about 6-10 times and out of all them only one time the food wasn't the greatest. We have had the salad bar few times to the tuna sandwich which no I didn't get my husband or I sick!! Fish and chips are nice! Even brought my mother here and she h ad the slim Jim which did seem small. She also had the reuben before and she liked it :) honestly it's a nice big boys not the best I've had bit great people and nice food! read more

My friend took me to the Big Boy in Bad Axe recently for my birthday. We ordered breakfast. I always order my rye toast dry, well done. When I received my breakfast my toast was plastered with butter. I called the waitress over and repeated how I had ordered my toast. She picked it up and as she walked away she said, "You didn't order it that way." I said, "Yes, I did, and that's not the way to talk to a customer." I waited for my toast; my food was getting cold. I said, "I shouldn't have to pay for my breakfast." Jessica, the manager, came over with a plate of light toast & said sarcastically, "I knew it was you. You always have a problem & you are paying for your breakfast." I told her not to talk to me like that, and if they got it right the first time I wouldn't have to send it back. She ran off. Someone finally brought me the toast the way I'd ordered it. My breakfast was colder. I ate part of it. I asked to see Darcey, the owner. Darcey came over with a scowl on her face. I knew she'd been told what had happened. I tried to explain anyway. She said she hadn't been there, and Jessica was in the kitchen crying. ABOUT WHAT!!! My friend, who'd been observing the entire situation, told Darcey exactly what had happened, word for word and in what order, and how Darcey should have handled it. Darcey went to the register and spoke with a man who was checking out, and he said he was just happy when the waitresses smiled at him. We were just behind them, and Darcey looked at me to make sure I had heard him. My friend paid for our breakfast. At the register Darcey was staring at me with a shit eating grin on her face. She'd obviously found pleasure in my displeasure and embarrassment. She said Happy Birthday to me in a sarcastic tone. LIKE HELL!!! Myself and five others had the unpleasant experience of eating at this restaurant on 8/30/2014 at 5:30pm. Our first problem was that three of us had ordered the salad bar in addition to our sandwiches. Two of us proceeded to get the broccoli soup which was brown/caramel in color. I have frequently ordered this soup in the past and I know that the color should be whitish in color. We notified the waitress and they brought out some new soup that looked much better on the surface but then we noticed the brown coming to the top as it was cooling. Having myself worked in the restaurant business for twenty years I know it is not proper to mix old discolored soup and new soup as it becomes a health concern!!! We should have left, but decided to finish our dinners as we were all hungry. I had ordered the big boy sandwich with fries and salad bar, I also requested that the dressing and lettuce be put on the side as I was sharing this with my son. The sandwich came out with dressing drenched on the bun and burger and dressing on the side. So I told our waitress and she said she would get a new one, as my son refuses to eat anything with sauce. A few minutes later the new sandwich comes out after I observe the cook obviously upset and shaking his head. The cook was young, tall, and had blonde hair. The sandwich is then brought out by the manager. I open the sandwich to find the burger patty had the sauce scraped off and another piece of cheese had been placed over the original one on the bottom and not even melted once again covering up the sauce. Not to mention the lettuce was the romaine lettuce from the salad bar and not the shredded iceberg. So once again I call over our server and let her know. She then takes the burger to the kitchen and now obviously the cook is MAD!!!! Seeing how he is visible to the restaurant perhaps he needs to be informed we can see him when he is shaking his head and upset. Mind you my original fries were left at the table I had now a hot sandwich and cold fries!!! Never another apology from the manager NOTHING!!! I tell the waitress about the cook's behavior then she comes back and says the burger had been removed from our tab. The rest of my party had been done eating as I am just beginning and the bill was dropped off, then our server comes and asks if we want desert.....really you brought the bill!!!! Not a good experience and we will be unlikely to return. Perhaps your staff at this restaurant needs to be trained on customer service and complaints as well as food safety. read more
