I usually avoid writing negative reviews or speaking ill of businesses or people, but I feel compelled to share my experience at Peppermint while attempting to get permanent jewelry. Visiting from out of state, I planned a fun afternoon of shopping with my friend and had always wanted to try permanent jewelry, so I decided on a whim to get an anklet at Peppermint. The process should have been a red flag when the woman struggled to get the bracelet on my ankle, and it even came off while we were still shopping. We tried again, and she assured me there would be no issues, but shortly after on our way to dinner, I found it had fallen off. I called to request a refund, as the service clearly didn't work, but was told they couldn't refund me, leaving me out $50. I returned the day before leaving New York to get it reattached, but was told the chain I chose wasn't suitable for an anklet--something they should have mentioned initially. I picked a new chain, but it only lasted about two weeks before it fell off again. Overall, I'm disappointed that what was supposed to be a fun, spontaneous purchase turned into a frustrating headache. To not offer a refund on a service that wasn't successful is really poor business. While the store is very cute, I wouldn't recommend getting permanent jewelry there. read more

OKAY, okay you get it. Discovering Tanvi and her team of associates has been a game changer for me as I have been transitioning my wardrobe from collegiate child to adult badass over the past few years. My favorite thing about this boutique is the friendly-but-honest feedback the entire team has been trained to provide. If something isn't flattering or isn't right for my coloring, I know they will kindly let me know and suggest something else. I have bought clothes for all occasions, in addition to a number of hilarious greeting cards and Rochester prints. I learned not to be afraid of jumpsuits in this store ("But my BUTT" "shut up") and always leave feeling more confident than when I walked in. I find the pricing to be incredibly reasonable, especially given the durability and curated sourcing of the clothing in-store. I have certainly done my fair share of splurges here as well, but know I can find what I need no matter what my budget is. The dresses I've bought have ranged from $38-$99 and anything in between. Peppermint definitely came in handy this weekend when I was wanting to get a unique and and fun birthday gift for my cousin! I was able to order a couple Rochester exclusive gifts online and picked up my order in store. The process was easy to order online and my order was ready the following day (I ended up ordering late Friday higher so by Saturday morning it was ready!). I ended up deciding to walk in the store and look around before I picked up my order. They have so much variety from fun and bold jewelry to cards to dresses and even cloth masks. Peppermint is a great shop to find unique, local-made and local-themed gifts (for women and men), as well as an awesome array of stylish and trendy clothing, statement pieces, earrings, jewelry, purses, stockings and other cute things that you realize you cannot live without as soon as you see them. I have a been a fan of the shop since it was located on Park Ave down by Meigs; the proprietor is fashionable and fabulous; I think of the collection available in the shop as 'curated' as opposed to simply sourced because I could see her wearing anything and everything in the shop, and that makes me feel inspired to take risks, try things on, and keep my wardrobe up to date. The location in the Culver Road Armory is also convenient, with great hours, online shopping, and free parking. Inside there are mirrors and changing stations, as well as helpful staff to answer questions and make suggestions. They also offer gift wrapping and multiple methods of payment. Shopping here is almost too convenient. Finally, this is a woman-owned, minority-owned business, and I would rather support them with my shopping dollars (holiday and every day) than any of the big box retailers. I have been wanting to make a visit to Peppermint for quite sometime. I finally had time yesterday to make the trip a good distance from home to their store. What a mistake, and waste of my time. I was "sized" up from the minute I walked in the door, just kept checking me from head to toe, making me feel very uncomfortable, and like I did not belong there. I understand the problem with theft these days, but to hover next to me the full time, was unacceptable. I am a middle aged woman that was shopping for Christmas gifts, and made a special trip to their store to spend MY money. It has been a long time coming... I don't know why I haven't been into this boutique before. Honestly, I had one of the best shopping experiences ever. Tanvi immediately helped me out, showing me a variety of dresses and tops that I probably wouldn't ever have picked out on my own. I was open to trying new things, and the actual experience of shopping here was like a personal stylist sessions. I ended up walking out with three new dresses and a cardigan that I am in love with!! Typically, I have been turned off by small boutique shops because I never seem to fit into the clothes. Generally, they are tailored to thin, trendy girls. Peppermint is definitely trendy, but an XL girl can definitely find something here. Tanvi said not to pay too much attention to the sizes, just try things on. And she will help you find something that is going to fit - you might just be surprised. The atmosphere here is also chill and relaxed, and there are so many cute accessories and gifts as well. To top it all off - the prices are SO reasonable. You can break the bank if you want to - but you don't have to! What a great little place.. oddly enough when it was on Park Ave I never went in and it was a short walking distance. What a travesty! Now at the Culver Road Armory a bigger space and lots of parking a plus. It's lovely inside you will sometimes be greeted by Cooper and Rosie the stores doggies too cute. Lots of lovely dresses I got one for a wedding, accessories are cool and unique, great purses and etc.. upstairs they have locally made cards and all sorts of "Rochester" things to get for yourself or gifts. It's time I updated my review for Peppermint, most notably because their new space is perfection. It's the best place for them to grow now that they're in the Culver Rd Armory. The space is open, bright, and industrial. There's so much room for more beautiful things! Not only do I love Tanvi and her team, but half my wardrobe has been purchased here. I've gotten some of my favorite (and most complimented) party dresses here as well as the most cozy tunics and tops. Her designs are beautiful and unique, and the other designers she features are fitting with the brand and style she's established over the years. There's a fine balance between trendy, cozy, classy, and flashy, but she seems to nail them all with the variety of items in her store. You feel special walking around town knowing that you're one of a few people who own it. The selection of blanket scarves is amazing; they're the softest. There are several accessories including a wall of necklaces, sassy phrased stamped on bracelets, funky earrings, and stylish studs, as well as clutches and handbags (Mat & Nat brand). I bought a sweater and didn't try it on. I didn't like the way it fit so I brought it back. Because it wasn't within SEVEN days of the purchase I could not return the sweater... even for store credit. What a horrible policy that makes it hard for the consumer, especially ones who like to shop local. Very very unfortunate. Also the store is trying to remove negative reviews. I LOVE PEPPERMINT. It is my go-to place for high-quality, unique pieces. Everything I've gotten from there has been incredible and I always get tons of compliments. Whenever I have a specific thing I'm looking for, like a great sweater, cute dress, pretty necklace, ROC-inspired gift, or my first-ever jumpsuit, I always find the perfect piece here. Also, the staff and the owner Tanvi are all so warm, supportive, and welcoming. Boutique-style clothing has been intimidating to me in the past because I felt like I wasn't "good enough"/skinny enough to have those kinds of clothes. Peppermint COMPLETELY changed my mind about all of that! Every time I go in there, I find an affordable, flattering, unique item in an empowering environment. This is a great little find! It is somewhat hidden around the corner from Trata and none of my friends had ever mentioned it but I stumbled across it one day leaving West Elm. The first time, I ended up buying some jewelry and a very cool poster from Etsy for my office. The second time, I bought a ton more jewelry and a very cute top and wanted to buy more. I ended up chatting with the owner, who is a very hip younger woman originally from Dubai. You could tell from her clothing that she had great style and she explained the store carried items from all over the world. We had an interesting conversation about her travels to interesting and not-so-common destinations around the world where the fashion was diverse and unique. These travels inspire her and drive her great taste, which is evident in the store. The items in the store are unique, trendy and affordable, with mainly apparel but a smaller home decor section upstairs and a surprisingly large amount of Rochester themed items. My favorite was a t-shirt that said "But first, Weggies." It's similar to Thread, which I'm sad closed down, and we are lucky to have it! I love affordable boutique stores like this that allow you to get away from the mainstream trends and be more expressive and original. read more

This is the place to go if you want Rochester-related gifts. They have tons of "I love Rochester" or "ROC" giftable items like t-shirts, ring holders, cards, jewelry, desk-figurines, etc. The downstairs has women's clothes (lots of dresses), jewelry and some bow ties (kind of random). The upstairs has the home/gifts stuff. They sell cards, desk placards, lesbian and gay-related notepads, and a bunch of other cool retro-looking stuff. They have plenty of parking as well. Their dresses ranged from $30-50. I thought a lot of their sizes looked small-ish (though I read reviews that said they did offer plus-sized clothes?). I went to college in Rochester and survived 5 glorious winters before I had the sense to go where the weather didn't want to kill me. In the decades since, I often tell friends, family, and new acquaintances about how grim and depressing Rochester was. Apparently, the NY Post did an article that accused the city of being grim, and I was offended! That said, a college buddy of mine found that this wonderful shop had a hilarious commemoration of the grim and depressing and shipped me a mug stating such. It was a fantastic, unique, individual type of gift that you can't find at any big box store! The world needs more shops like Peppermint with cool and different gifts like this!! The best part is, they shipped the mug to me in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, my mail carrier moonlit on that old Chevy Chase movie (you know the one with the psychotic letter carrier) and the mug unfortunately arrived broken. I wrote a short email explaining what happened, and Lauren replied back within an hour! She didn't need much from me to get a replacement in the mail, again packed well but this time my mail carrier apparently was having a better day and it arrived in perfect condition in a couple days! Amazing store! I love the array of stuff, both Rochester-specific and not. I've gotten some of my favorite shirts (Rochester is My Happy Place) from here, amazing Christmas ornaments, and some really beautiful prints. The best part? It is not simply Rochester-specific. I got my sister a gorgeous designer purse for a graduation gift, a personalized necklace, and I've gotten the cutest tights. Peppermint is always my first stop when looking for gifts, especially if I have a general idea but not a specific one for what I want to get someone. You cannot go wrong here. This boutique is a really great addition to the Park Ave shopping scene with unique items at reasonable prices. Unlike some boutiques the size ranges for clothing are fairly extensive which I can really appreciate as a curvy gal. Peppermint carries items that flatter every body type, plus really fun accessories that anyone can wear. Please read my original review before you read this! It is still accurate. I just wanted to give a little bit more information on why Peppermint is different. I spend way more time than I should at Peppermint and I have come to realize what sets them apart from other clothing stores. It is the fact that if you so wish, their staff will spend time helping you put together an outfit. I don't mean the basic b things salespeople throw onto mannequins in the mall. Peppermint is owned by a designer and you will see that in how outfits are put together. Even if something seems out of your comfort zone, I urge you to give it a shot. Honestly, my mind has been utterly blown time and time again on how they put together separate items of clothing that seem to make no sense and create one cohesive combination. Of course, you can always just buy what catches your eye (and unfortunately for me, almost every time, something(s) catches my eye). But...every now and then, let Tanvi and her team take the wheel. It is like she is a designer or something (hint: she is a designer. a brilliant one at that). She will definitely push your idea of what is "you" just a little bit. read more

There is far more on display to choose from, which is great, but frustrating because I wanted it all. The jewelry selection is just sublime, from dainty, to large statement pieces, I was beyond impressed.... and don't get me started on the clothing. Peppermint is the reason I continue to tell everyone I know to shop local and focus on small businesses when appropriate. How did one store become the focus of my efforts? I think my love for Peppermint was inevitable, but it was a simple silver necklace that sealed the deal on this one. Several years ago, I wandered into a little boutique in the Park-Meigs Mall. In fact, it was so long ago, the shop was in its previous location. I was immediately taken by the jewelry selection. When you walk into a store and decide you want everything on the rack, you know you've found a good one. In the end, after browsing every display at least twenty times over a few visits, I decided on a small silver pendant that had a flower on one side and the word "strength" on the other. To this day, it's the necklace I wear most frequently. It's also the necklace that showed me the one downside to Peppermint: once an item is out of stock, that's the end. Therefore, I never did get the matching "karma" necklace, and I've racked my brain trying to find it again online or anywhere at all. If anyone is familiar with it, please help a Yelper out post haste. Peppermint is also known for the adorable selection of dresses and other apparel, some of which is designed by the owner herself. While the rule about items in stock still applies, it's a little easier to accept with dresses because you have a better chance of being the only person you know with the item. My pro tip is to keep a close eye on Peppermint's social media accounts for new releases. You can cross check their website for the price, and then get over to the shop to try it on. I've acquired several adorable dresses this way, and a few tops to boot. Speaking of boots, the shoe room is in the back of the store and worth a visit for some hidden treasures. But the best reason of all to visit Peppermint in person? You may get a visit from an adorable dog. Every good store needs a cute mascot, any animal that qualifies as "adorable, small, and furry" will do. When you shop at Peppermint, you really get to see a store where you're a valued customer. I purchased a David Bowie pin from a different Rochester boutique. When I misplaced it, that store directed me to Peppermint. I'm not local to Rochester, so I asked if they could ship it to me. They normally don't ship such small things, but they made an exception for me, and I appreciate it so much! I got a tracking number quickly, and they included some awesome stickers! I used to live in Rochester and go to school up there, so receiving a surprise sticker from Dellarious was so nice and brightened my day. I'll have to stop by when I'm in town again! read more

My experience doesn't seem to mimic others. I went in on a busy Saturday and spent around $400 on gifts. The young woman ringing me up had an issue with the CC terminal and actually ran my card twice. I was concerned but she confidently told me that only the second would register. Of course, two days later, it shows as processed in my online statement. I called the store and was told to bring both receipts in (I ONLY had one) and when I did, there were two sets of blank stares and told to call my cc company. (Manager/owner not in at that time.) I did so but took four months to straighten out -- four months! Apparently, they were extremely slow in responding to my cc company and it couldn't be resolved until they responded. I did like the items but this actually soured on me shopping there again unless i had cash on hand (which is a rarity.) read more

I am very disappointed with Peppermint because they do not stand behind their jewelry and as of today I will no longer recommend them to anyone. I have been a loyal customer (supporting Shop Local) for the past 5 years but no longer. I bought 4 necklaces as Christmas gifts for my daughters. All had a state & heart pendant with a shiny gold finish. I returned one to the store today requesting a replacement in stainless steel or store credit because after less than 2 months the gold finish was gone from the necklace chain & heart. I was told by the sales associate who contacted the owner while I waited that because it was not returned within their 21 days after the holiday return/exchange timeframe AND because of the poor condition of the necklace, Peppermint would not provide an exchange or credit. In good faith I spent $86.40 on 4 necklaces. No more! If you don't stand behind your products, I won't buy from you. read more

I'm so happy I just moved around the corner from this boutique! I stopped in to browse and was immediately drawn to almost everything they carry. The clothes are trendy and affordable, with the added plus of being way more unique than your typical mall outfit because there are limited amounts of each piece. They also have plenty of jewelry and accessories to dress up your new outfit. My personal favorite part of the store was the decor/gift section upstairs. I was not aware of their policy. If I had been told at the time of purchase I would either tried it on before I purchased or not bought it. The first time I stopped into peppermint as a Rochester promoter, I expected an average boutique with a staff served to inform and sell like must modern installation boutiques. All are welcomed by the cozy atmosphere of the store and storefront, and I was welcomed by the in-house designer, Tanvi immediately, and was able to speak to her about her fashion design journey and opinions of the industry.
