it's hard to find a good, honest, well-priced, friendly mechanic; in the bay area we had an awesome shop that took great care of our cars and they did a wonderful job on education, so we were bummed when we moved back down to LA and were forced to find a new mechanic. when i needed service on my car, the first thing that my first-generation traditional chinese dad did was cut out ads for deals on service; as i hunted them down online for reviews and on the BBB i found out they were awful and was growing discouraged until i saw the BBB reviews of performance auto center: http://www.la.bbb.org/Business-Report/Performance-Auto-Center-13010683 even better, they were close by and easily accessible, so i stopped by with my dad and met the owner, Jas. back when i took my car there, i was still a uc berkeley grad student and his son was just applying to colleges. we gossiped about colleges (go bears!) and he was so personable and helpful that i couldn't resist feeling immediately comfortable. as he was taking care of my car i enjoyed reading the articles about jas in the cal poly newspaper about him talking about caring for the cars of students and treating people fairly, flipping through is various car magazines, and chatting with him and his equally friendly mechanic, javier. fast forward and years later, my dad religiously takes all of his cars here as do my husband and me. my dad always raves about jas - jas has had his workers drive my dad back home instead of waiting in the shop, fixed my tire for free where another service shop was going to charge $50 just to look at it, and, most importantly, he always does a very thorough and fair job inspecting and caring for our cars and his prices are very reasonable and competitive (i just got my 150K service that included oil change, spark plugs, transmission on my 1997 honda civic for $184). i also like that they always call to update you on the status and cost breakdown, answers every question that i have (i'm a big fan of education), and in the rare cases that they don't know the answer to my questions, will research the answer and promptly call me back. they're open 8am-5pm on the weekdays and i believe open half a day on saturdays; there's a slightly sketchy-looking after hours drop box (it's basically a black hole in the wall) but it works and they call in the morning when they get your keys. yay for jas and javier! read more

I've been taking my cars to Performance Auto Center for several years and have always been grateful for the good work and fair prices from Jas and his team. Last week was no exception. I brought my car to have him check my belts and hoses to see if any needed replacing. I know that seems like an open invitation for a mechanic to "find" parts that need replacing. But after having been to PA many times, I trusted Jas' judgement and honesty. One of the hoses he replaced was not in stock and e was unable to get it until the following day. I was frustrated by having to leave my car longer than expected and expressed this to him on the phone. He patiently explained why getting the correct hose was important and why the hose was unavailable that day. It took me some time to understand that he was right. When I went in the next day, he apologized that it took longer than expected and for how it inconvenienced me, and reiterated why it was important to have waited for the correct part. Jas is a dishonest mechanic. If you own a diesel I highly recommend to not bring it here he is not a diesel mechanic even if he says he is. I have invoices and proof I spent over 8k cash with this horrible mechanic . Not to mention he had my truck for almost a year & still can't get it right . Doesn't honor his warranty work . Fantastic service and I really couldn't be happier. I was having some trouble installing a replacement fog light housing, since my original had recently shattered. Dropped into Performance Auto Center (without an appointment), and even though they were busy, they immediately were able to help me out. The put my car on the lift, took a look at it, and were easily able to replace the shattered housing in just a couple minutes. I asked them how much I owed them, and they simply shrugged and essentially said "ehh, don't worry about it." This blew my mind, since I had called around and other places had quoted me over $50 just help install the new housing. I drive a hybrid and get my synthetic oil changes here for a great price! My family that lives locally have been coming here to Jas for years and I recently started coming in the last year! They also have time whenever I call and are promptly done with my car. I sometimes ask them about tire rotation or non-cosmetic things, and they always help me! If you're in the la Verne, Claremont, Pomona area and you need car assistance, come here to Jas and Javier. Looking at other negative reviews, people complain about not being able to bring their own parts or not being able to use aftermarket parts. Simple explanation is that Jas will never settle for cheaper or aftermarket parts because there is no guarantee that it will work just as well as the OEM or what the car originally came with. So yes if you want cheaper brake pads for example from like autozone he won't put those on cuz they aren't the best for your car. He and Javier will give you what's best for your car no questions asked. I went in today for a routine oil change and I also told Jas and Javier that my brakes were squeaking and was shaking a little. Javier took it for a test drive and has explained to me the possibilities why my car could be squeaking. In the end he only charged for the oil change and nothing for the brake checks and such. Simple. Don't go anywhere else. And yes if you get butt hurt about people being frank with what you need to fix your car then put on your big boy/girl pants on. I've been going to Performance Auto Center for the past 2 years for oil changes. With every visit I have experienced excellent consumer service. The guys here certainly care about their customers. I once came at the last minute to receive an oil change before going out of town. Even though I didn't have an appointment, they took care of my car; despite how busy they were. I first used Performance Auto about 20 years ago. I priced out repairs and the owner, Jas, was the lowest. That's how we started, and I've used Performance Auto ever since. Every so often I check his competitors, one year ago I had a coupon for 25% off on labor. That could be a lot of cash, but Jas still charged $250 less.
