My wife and son got to the shop at 9:30 am, and the smog technician wasn't there. When he did arrive, two cars that arrived after my wife were serviced first - and then she was told the smog check would take about 30 minutes UNLESS other customers with car issues pulled in. Apparently, those other customers were the priority. What?! (Predictably, the truck wasn't ready until 12:46 pm.) Our old 1999 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner needed a STAR approved shop, and I had used this service center when I needed a similar smog test for an RV several years ago. That time, I dealt with an older gentleman who was quite pleasant and seemed legit. Well, the truck passed ALL tests except the "visual" inspection, as the service provider would not sign off on a couple of hoses that appeared to be cracking - but not cracked yet. So, a $60 charge for a "No Pass" verdict when it passed all electronic tests. Then, my wife was offered an incomplete quote on "necessary" hose replacements - $135 for two of the hoses, but no quote on the third, larger hose because this mechanic wasn't sure of its price. And, of course, IF she would have done service there, an addition $30 dollar reevaluation fee (Remember, it passed all electronic emissions tests) would also have been assessed along with the vague hose replacement costs. Our regular mechanic doesn't have smog services for STAR-ed vehicles, but we're going back to him for hose repair advice; I'm not going to have my wife deal with this scammer again! By the way, a friend my wife saw there (another lady) was given a recommendation for a new battery but was told to come back later for servicing. Yes! That must be a real time commitment to change out a battery! (We hope she went to someplace that offered her the needed servicing on the spot.) End result - $60 on some shady practices, in my opinion, and nothing else except the prospect of shelling out more money. Don't get me wrong, a business should be paid for services rendered, but this discretionary call by the technician appears questionable. I'm not willing to chance any further servicing there. I feel like they already "stuck it" up my tailpipe for today's charges, but they can stick anything additional up their own tailpipe without the benefit of fleecing us. (I - and my squandered $60 - hope it's something BIG!) read more

I brought my car to this repair shop for two things: 1. Soft brake pedal 2. Leaking coolant It took three weeks before I got the call to come pick up my car. They did a complete brake flush. "The soft pedal is better but not completely resolved" I was told when I got the call. They still charged me full price for the flush, even though the pedal was still soft. When I drove off with the car, I realized that the pedal was exactly the same as when I brought it in, there had been no improvement. The next day I got a warning light about the coolant being low. I topped it up but got the same message the following day. It was leaking more than before. Basically after $810 the car was still in the same exact condition, maybe worse. I brought the car back. This time they determined that it was the brake master cylinder. I insisted on buying my own part. When I picked up the car four weeks later, the pedal was a little better, but was still soft. This time they said that the issue was because the part I brought them was "made in China". They did not charge me for that extra work (part of the original repair work to resolve the soft pedal) so I will not make an issue about the soft brake pedal. Regarding the leaking coolant, they told me that the previous owner had used silicon for repairs to the cooling system, and they did not want to touch it because this would "open up a can of worms." So they gave me back my car with the leaking coolant issue and did not mention anything about a refund. I came here because of the word "Affordable" in their name. It ended up costing me. I'm not the type to complain about things, but when you give me back my car in the same condition and don't think a refund is warranted, then I have to say something. We have one car, a 2008 Subaru Outback, that has seen some hard miles. I had always hated bringing it in for services and repairs until I met Ali at Affordable Auto Repair. He and the other mechanics that work there are kind, take pride in their work, and are very thorough. We originally brought our car to Affordable Auto Repair after we were overcharged for a failed repair at another mechanic. He quickly found the problem and showed me. Came for a smog check on a blazing hot day, and let me tell you, the air-conditioned lobby was a life saver. I've been to more than a handful of smog check places, and this is the only one that I've seen that runs the AC, most just open the garage doors and let the breeze try to blow. Anyway, with that out of the way, I can get on to the great hospitality that I saw while I was there. Super nice guy, the place is actually pet-friendly (he loves huskies), has a very welcoming demeanor, gives a great price whether or not you have a coupon, and he even noticed that a patron left a nice hydroflask in the office, called them up, and said that he'd hold on to it for them. I've taken it to six different highly rated mechanics who have each said they fixed it and charged me over $500-1000 each time. I went to this place for smog for my 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I passed the smog at the other place 3 months ago. At this time they failed me because of missing EGR. Last time when I passed smog.
