Within a few miles we had lost about an eighth of a tank of fuel, and after pulling off it was clear we had a major fuel leak after the pump--nothing I could fix on the side of the road. AAA towed both our truck and trailer to Kelly's. Even with other vehicles ahead of us, they diagnosed the problem quickly. The repair wasn't simple due to how buried the component was, but they handled it efficiently and got us back on the road. I trailered the car 250 miles south to Merlin, to get things sorted out. Fred was able to start working on the car right away and he quickly deduced that it was a valve issue. He sent the head to Eugene to get rebuilt, got things back together, adjusted the carburetor and now the car runs like new. This is not an inexpensive repair, but we spent about half what we would have in Portland for the same work. Fred is a great mechanic and as honest as the day is long. Everywhere we called said they couldn't fit us in for a few days but Jim, who was about to close for the day, said he would stay there until we arrived to try to help. He was there to greet us and help get us back on the road as soon as possible. And instead of taking advantage of our desperation, we had to beg him to let us pay him because he was just genuinely trying to help us! As awful as the temperatures were and the unbearable smoky air, most people would have gone home to escape the conditions.
