The techs at Tom's auto service are amazing! Very knowledgeable and helpful. I'm an Oregon native but currently live in California. I was up visiting in grants pass when all of a sudden, a terrible noise was coming from the front right of my engine bay. Not knowing the exact cause, had my suv towed into Tom's early on a Monday. By Monday afternoon they knew what was wrong, had the part is stock and could get me back on the road by end of the next day. They were even complete early and upon pickup, the tech showed me the broken fan from the radiator fan assembly that was basically wobbling away making quite the ruckus. I am so thankful that Tom's was helpful, knowledgeable and quick. They did come highly recommended by some friends so I'm glad I trusted them. If needed, will definitely take vehicles back to Tom's. read more

The old mechanic was nice enough to stop what he was doing and go for a test drive to diagnose my issue and recommend another shop for a muffler fix that worked out great. No charge! Not saying they will do that for you but they were honest and real human beings. The shop itself is funky but so what? Old school. I think the negative reviews are by people who don't listen well and don't understand that car repair can be hit and miss. read more

My daughter and I were having car trouble passing through Grants Pass on our way home. Toms has been wonderful, we have had our car's serviced here and they are friendly and helpful. They communicate well and let us know all the details about what was wrong. Prices are great and they don't try to up sell you just good home town place. We appreciate this business letting us drop our car office after hours my husband works swing shift and I work day shift so we have limited time during the day mostly my lunch hour to do a car drop off. These guys are awesome. We were traveling through the area and our Truck started to have problems and blew a code. Called them up, they said if you can drive it up we will look at it on the spot. We limped in, they assessed the problem and properly diagnosed the issue under 5 minutes. Got the rig fix'd and headed out. The ford dealer said they couldn't see us for 2 weeks. I believe they did a good job on the alternator but I was a upset about the fact that he quoted me $110 on the oil change (which is about how much it is where I'm from) and then ended up charging me $150 (he said that $150 included the fan). I understand that they have to make money but I would've liked him to be honest about the prices from the beginning when I had asked. I don't like surprise charges after my car has already been worked on. I need to know what the charges are to make sure I can afford it and $150 was out of my budget but I was forced to pay it since they did the work. It was dishonest on their part :( read more

I had a major mechanical failure on my 70's vintage Jeep Truck while en route to Northern California from Seattle. Left wheel, including brake drum and axle, departed the vehicle while on Interstate 5. Destroyed the rear axle. Got it towed to a hotel parking lot in Grants Pass and in the morning started calling around. After a few calls I settled on Tom's Auto Service. Towed it there. These folks are solid, fair, and competent mechanics. I'm a mechanic, but far far from home, my shop, my tools...I had to rely on them to get this truck back on the road. As rear axles for a vehicle of this vintage are few and far between it took a week to find one. They let me store the vehicle at their shop at no charge until I could bring it to them. They took a few days to get it installed which was fine by me, and the following weekend I picked it up. When I say installed, understand that there was a lot of mix and match of various parts plus a brake rebuild, and all of this done on an outside concrete pad next to the shop during a 100 year heatwave. They put my old parts in the bed of my truck, neatly boxed. The price was beyond fair. I was at an extreme disadvantage here, and there was no sign at all of any price gouging or padding whatsoever. If someone came in my shop and asked me to do the same work I wouldn't have been a dime cheaper. This is a workaday world, get it done shop. The don't have a bunch of cars sitting around. They get the work done and back out the door. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Since arriving home I've went over the work they did. It's first rate. No cut corners, no shortcuts. I called them on the phone, I thought they were alright. But when I had my car taken in, they apparently lied to me about my brake cable. They told me that it was rusted and no good. I took it to another mechanic and he showed me it was a plastic cable. The cable had been cut by a sharp instrument. The also ruined my wheel drum by drilling a hole in it, so I had to buy a new one. I also took a truck in and he supposedly fixed it. It developed even worse problems. NO thank you! I will not go there again read more

I used to go to Tom's Auto Service for all of my auto maintenance and repairs. When Tom was alive, the service was great, ever since he died however, it is not. I had a timing belt replaced on my Honda Civic by Tom's Auto, and when I picked it up, the car engine was making a strange sound. I brought it back for them to check and they said it was the new belt, and that it just needed some time to stretch. Well, it never did stop making the noise. A few months later, the car stopped running on the highway. I brought it to Tom's. They couldn't figure it out. Brought it to the local Honda dealer, and they said it was the computer which got destroyed by a jolt from the alternator, which was loose. $1100 later, my car was back in business. I'm pretty sure that when Tom's Auto did the timing belt job, they failed to properly tighten the alternator bolts, which caused the sound, and it eventually came loose and sent a jolt into the computer which fried it. Also, my A/C wasn't cooling that great and Tom's Auto said it was the PCV? valve which needed to be replaced. I would require taking apart the dashboard and was a long process to get to it. Estimate was around $1000.00. I brought it to the same Honda dealer to have it checked out and they said that the PCV? valve was OK, and the actual problem was a blocked cabin filter. They replaced the filter and now my A/C works great. Cost $25.00. Tom's Auto used to be a very reliable place to take your car. These days, not so much. read more

We were traveling through to Washington. When we pulled into the hotel our ac quit! 100 plus degrees for the next few days. Still had to get fixed or take a chance of not getting home. Called Toms Auto and he checked to see if the ac unit was available and we were in luck! Brought the truck in at 8:30 and was out by 11:30 and $100 less than what was quoted. Horrible service! Did over $300 worth of damage to my car. Had to bring back my car for them to fix my alternator AGAIN. Still had a warranty on it. However, when they put it back in the car they broke off the clips to hold my coolant hose and it was just hanging. Ended up burning a hole into the hose and having coolant spray everywhere. Not only that they broke the window button and claimed it was "already loose" so it wasnt their fault. And now my car is making weird noises when I start it up. So I have to take it to have someone else access the damages. Oh and Im 9 months pregnant dealing with this. Horrible place. Beware of this place. read more

I have taken my Subaru in 3 times for the same problem. They can't find the problem and when I told Jim my headlight wiring was fried (had burned out and melted the connection) and needed to be checked, he told me "I don't care if your headlight catches on fire, I won't fix it today". I'm a single woman who relies on a service provider to show professionalism and respect especially when I'm trusting them to be the experts and fix my car. I was so shocked at the level of rudeness I turned and left. I had to leave my car there all day and nothing was fixed and they never found the original problem BUT they did charge for 1.5 hours of "diagnosis". This is THEE WORST repair shop I have EVER dealt with. I was very inconvenienced and insulted. Don't think about using this shop when there are much better alternatives in town. Single women who need a mechanic should run the other way! read more
