I walked in and immediately knew this place was legit- it has the smell I associate with Jewish delis. I basically made my own sandwich, a pastrami one, on an everything bagel with Russian dressing, coleslaw and liptauer. It was so good! I opted for a side of Brussels sprouts and they were amazing! They came with something that tasted like yogurt and had honey drizzled on top. Service was really friendly, docked a star cuz they got busy and then it became really slow. It looked like only a few people were working the floor. I also got a black and white which was huge! It was also quite delicious and my parents enjoyed the rugelah I brought them back. Great place for an affordable and FILLING lunch. I started out with the matzo ball soup, mainly because I had this in New York before and loved the refreshing flavor when I'm away fro home. The waiter recommended the Jewbano and Reuben. Coming from San Francisco, it was frustrating that a sandwich took 30 minutes to prepare but I the vibe in RVA is much more laid back. During this 30 minutes I noticed that almost every table had to pack their food to go... O_O Our food arrived and there was no way I could take bite of the Reuben the way it was served LOL very generous portions of protein. The Jewbano was a bit too salty for my liking but I enjoyed the Reuben very much! I ended up eating each meat by the slice hahaha. If you're dining with one other customer and don't have a big appetite, I recommend ordering one sandwich and adding a soup. Went for the first time in almost three years because of Covid and never been in Richmond-- it was as amazing as I remembered. The menu seems to be a bit truncated but still lots of great options . I've never eaten there without getting the borscht and it was as amazing as I remembered. My two dining friends and I then shared the schlubby fries and while they were really tasty, there was a lot going on -- fries, pickled onions, pickled jalapeños, pastrami, havarti cheese and Russian dressing. I loved it but the two other guys thought it was a bit overboard. We then each got a sandwich -- whitefish 'crab cake' with sardines with a side of potato salad, the chickens schnitzel on brioche with a side of slaw and the roast beef sub with the everything chips. The whitefish cake was delicious and I loved the funk of the sardines on top. The potato salad was very finely processed which I love but I can imagine some folks not enjoying it. Didn't try the roast beef sub but my friend loved it -- I will say it's one of the more straightforward of the sandwiches but he loved it. Did not however like the everything chips -- they were adeptly fried but we all agreed they were really bland. Did try the schnitzel sandwich on brioche and it was really good. My friend loved it too -- the dollop of zhug really took it to another level. Really disappointing. I've been trying to get to this restaurant for ages, and finally made it on a day that they're open. Ordered a corned beef with a side of potato salad. The corned beef had clearly been sitting in a steam tray, possibly even in liquid, because it was completely dried out and flavorless. There wasn't enough mustard in the world to make it tender and moist. I liked the potato salad, but it's absolutely not a traditional deli salad. It's basically cold mashed potatoes seasoned with dill. Green salads on other tables looked fresh and delicious. Should have gotten one of them, but one doesn't go to a deli for salad. Pickles were fine, but standard commercial ones, not the half sours one expects in a deli. Service was fine, friendly and efficient, especially for such a crowded, small space . The servers bussed tables, too. I was hoping for a decent deli. I didn't find one here. We won't be back. read more

Benny Goodman. Just order this. It is delicious. It consists of potato latkes, smoked salmon, poached eggs, dill hollandaise, and salmon roe. The entree costs $14, but every bite is worth your money. You will not regret it. This is probably my favorite brunch restaurant. I also tried the Jewbano sandwich, which has sliced beef tongue and sliced beef brisket. Not many places offer beef tongue on their menu, but the meat just melts in your mouth. This is the first time I've tried Jewish food, and let me tell you, "It's Yiddish for Delicious." Many of their dishes have pickled vegetables, which I'm not too big of a fan though (Benny Goodman with pickled onions; Jewbano with pickled zucchini). I tried the apricot and pomegranate housemade soda. The apricot soda tasted like peach soda. The pomegranate soda was still good, but I wasn't a big fan of the aftertaste. I would suggest getting there early if you plan on dining for lunch/brunch, especially Saturdays and Sundays, because there will most likely be a 30-45 minute wait. The restaurant has limited seating. There is meter parking on Grace Street, the street where Perly's is located. But if you don't mind walking a few steps, there is free 2 hour parking on North 2nd Street. read more

We walked in with Starbucks cups, so they very kindly asked us to dump them in their mugs and dispose of the Starbucks cups. Totally cool about it, which we really appreciated. I found this beautiful jewish deli on my way out of Richmond and wouldn't resist... The location is located close to the library. We ordered for pickup and everything was ready-to-go. The food came with plenty of napkins and utensils. The staff was friendly. We got an onion bagel with chive schmear (cream cheese), latkes served with salmon, roe, and eggs, matzo ball soup, and a challah bread sandwich (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and cheese). The matzo ball soup is not pictured here because I gobbled it up. The soup was warm, filled with fresh carrots, celery, and herbs. Yum! The onion bagel was a bit stale (not enough to dock a star), but I enjoyed the schmear. The onion was delicious too. My girlfriend absolutely loved the latkes and everything was seasoned well. The latkes sat on a bed of vegetables, including leafy greens and cauliflower. My sandwich came with a side. I chose the potato salad and I could taste the fresh lemon zest and dill. We came to Perly's on a Saturday early afternoon, hoping to miss the brunch rush - well little did we know the brunch rush is an ALL DAY THING! The line was long, but moved quickly and we were seated probably after at 20 mins wait... not bad at all! Cocktails are delicious, and well crafted. You can choose to make your own sandwich or opt in for one of their creations! I ordered a small matzah ball soup - and it was truly excellent. Think a chicken noodle soup with some dill kick and instead of noodles, you have this amazing ball of dough in the middle of your soup that you can take chunks out of. *sigh* Definitely a heart and belly warming dish. I then opted for the pastrami breakfast bagel sandwich with havarti and an over medium egg. HOLY RIDONCULOUS MY TASTEBUDS WERE EXPLODING! This sandwich is phenomenal and by far the best pastrami I have ever had! It's on the crispy side and just pure deliciousness! egg was cooked just right so it ran over my bagel and got that yolky goodness all up in there. My only complaint is... I wanted more pastrami... On our way to DC, we stopped by Richmond VA for a few hours and had to try this place as it garnered so many positive reviews. The wait for us took about 40 mins which is understandable. Seated down, we got one meat knish $9 to share and that actually was pretty good and fluffy with meat inside. It came with a side of red cabbage and honey mustard. Unfortunately, that was the only bright dish. My son got the Jewish Sailor $15 which was an open face pastrami sandwich with beef sausage and other fixings. He didn't enjoy that all too much. I got the Sub Snyderman sandwich $15 which is supposed to be hot roast beef with horseradish sauce, melted provolone and pickled peppers. I liked the idea but the final product was a bit underwhelming. The roast beef was lukewarm and some of the pieces were like end parts and it was just clumpy. Also there was way too much cheese where it was a bit overpowering. I did like the fried dill French fries that came with it. My wife got the Fillmore Frittata and she thought it was just alright and wasn't all that tasty. I am sure this place has tons of staple dishes but based on our one visit, we had higher expectation and it just came up short today for us today. read more

I love the Deli/Diner look! We had the hummus sandwich and they added two extra pickles for us and gave us two different sides. They were extremely generous with their portion sizes which is always a plus! I am a sucker for lox so we got the Benedict that had smoked salmon on too if potato Loktas( I spelled that wrong) but basically the delish hash brown type thing.) I would definitely record both these items as they were extremely delicious and portioned well. I would pick the potato chips when choosing a side because they are soooooo crunchy!! I love love love love Perly's! It is by far hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond. If I ever have out of town guests coming to visit, the first place I take them to is Perly's. On my recent visit, I discovered the fish board that comes with two full bagels, spread, 3 selections of fish, and all the accompaniments of pickled vegetables. I think the suggestion is for 2 people to split it but there is so much food that my husband and I couldn't finish it all. If you come to Perly's though be prepared for a wait. There's a market next door that you can grab a coffee from while you wait and the streets are pedestrian friendly that I usually will just stroll for a little to pass some time. On a recent business trip to Richmond I had the pleasure of eating at Perly's. Who expects a great Jewish deli in the capital of the South? For most people pastrami on rye, is the ultimate deli sandwich, but I judge delis by my favorite, the hard salami on rye and Perly's was great. Not only was it great, but it was less than $11; I'd expect to pay $18 or more at most CA delis. Even better were the garlic & dill fries. I got a look at their breakfast menu and even though my breakfast was included at my hotel, I had to come back to Perley's for Benny Goodman, which is smoked salmon and poached eggs on latkes and topped with salmon roe and Hollandaise. It was amazing. I picked up a Perley's sandwich on my way to the airport, because I knew it was going to be better than anything I'd get on the plane. We started with the Potato Latkes and the Potato and Duck Pierogies. The Latkes were crispy, flakey and served with a tasty apricot apple sauce and creamy chive sour cream. The Potato and Duck Pierogies were the star of the show. Oh my god. I can't stop thinking about them. I would eat 5,000 of them. Melt in your mouth duck paired with the perfect mushroom and onion sauce. Yum. I got the cinnamon babka French toast and a chocolate egg cream. They were both exactly what I wanted them to be. Great caramelization on the French toast and the stewed apples and pecans gave it great texture. This place is the real deal! An authentic Jewish deli in Richmond? Yes, Virginia, you can find kosher in RVa! I've been to the Carnegie & Stage Deli in NYC and Canter's in LA and this place will stand-up. I went on a Monday morning at about 11am and waited for 20 minutes for a seat at the counter. They were running a 30 minute wait for a table and there were lots of people waiting. Had I known before hand, I would have gone to the Stella's Grocery next door and waited in the warmth. A great cup of coffee, an exceptional Ruben and more than adequate for a meal, I got a 'go box' for the 2nd half. You will park on the street, free for a half hour, roll the dice for longer if you feel lucky. Or you can opt for a pay spot if you wish. The corned beef meal is heavy on the hash, lots of it, plenty to share. The 2 of us should have made that the entire meal. Nevertheless, we moaned blissfully through the waffles also. Lots of very good apples too. We ate about 1/2 of the apples and most of the waffles. Get to Perly's before opening time, which was 9AM for us, if you want to be in the 1st seating.
