This venue doesn't know how to organize events! I've heard experiences from others too and today I got to experience it first hand. From what I thought it was going to be a goodnight vibe going out to support the line up/headliners. We arrived at the exact time the venue advertised the artist will perform. The bouncer told us they actually ended 2 hours ago from the original time they said. I was furious because not even a notification was sent to us that they changed the time. I would figure venues would notify their customers about the time changes but not even an email sent. Definitely not coming back for another events to this location. We came here on a Saturday night just before the band set up. It was a little tough to get into the records with the band there, so come early if you are after records. My husband said they had some nice rare unopened records for sale. He had a beer and the nice bartender fixed me up with a very pink and tasty Little Doll cocktail. We noticed you can bring food in, otherwise, some bags of chips at the bar. We got a good parking spot on the street. read more

There are two stores (on the smaller side) on York Blvd, the cooler area of Highland Park, almost across the street from each other. Nice vibe, decent vinyl selection, the prices are a tad on the pricier side. It could be a tad confusing (they each have a different address), but if you have time, pop in each of them. Customer service is very nice, people working here are cool, chatty and know music! If you're in the area and love music, these places are worth at least some browsing! Essential for the newbie starting their collection as well as ardent collectors filling in blanks and all in between. Their SEALED classics game has few peers. Cool shop, one super frustrating thing is that they have 2 shops across the street from each other but both have the same sections. So for instance if you are looking for a Pharaoh Sanders record you have to look in the Pharaoh section of both shops. Would be way better if they divided their sections between both stores. Also if you are selling records Permanent pays way better ( at least in credit, I haven't sold for cash yet ) than Amoeba. read more

I have shopped at 100's of record stores in the world and Lance is easily in my top 10 owners. Lance knows his music, he is honest, friendly, wants to talk music and does his own compilations. Plus, he has the coolest sideburns in all of record store owners worldwide. Reading what peps are saying on yelp about "attitude" and "portlandia" is so not true. Their record selection (heavily slanted to all variations of rock) is in the top 10% of all record stores. Stock is always coming in and every week or so is a new buying experience. They get in a good amount of harder to find records including some great rare records. Prices are like any other store, 80% of them are standard store priced, maybe 10% is for less and 10% is for more. Normally the records marked up a bit are the rarer records and they can command those prices because they sell. I swear that within less than two months it seems that 90% of the wall records are sold, so apparently they cannot be overpriced as some yelpers have stated. In short.......Lance is Ace. In Lance I Trust. Will always and forever deal with this store. The people at this shop work very hard to supply the shop with great records and acquire the wax people are hoping to find. They are doing all the legwork putting in tons of hours each week and we should be thankful there are still great owners out there. I suggest you should take my advice and shop here. read more

Picked up a ton of records, Beatles Rubber Soul and Revolver for $10 each, the Who, Crass, Harry Nilsson, Stray Cats, ELO. All of the records were cheaper than other stores in LA, some ridiculously cheaper. All play good, though some sleeves are worn. Really well-curated, the employee was nice. Really cool store at the back behind the bar. The bar itself is really nice and the atmosphere seems really homely and divey. I would go back to check out live music. Plenty of street parking. Nice outdoor area in front of the record store itself. read more

This review is for reselling your lps. I took in some great condition lps all close to Near Mint original 60s rock/ psych and 80s uk punk. These were all mostly titles that wouldn't sit long in the bins and the shop could resell fairly quickly. I dealt with the store manager who was rude & blunt on his buying preferences. He browsed through what he wanted pulling out about half the stack. He offered me a really low price for them. I was shocked knowing the prices he is selling these lps in his bins. Ive sold records to this store many times before with decent offers but this guy low balled me. A fun store to browse with nice overpriced wall candy. Oh yea, later same day I sold all the lps for more than double what they offered! read more

I came in for the first time last Saturday for the Ausmuteants in-store and didn't want to leave. The staff was really polite and down to Earth, and their selection is a good mix of highly collectible and/or weird stuff lining the walls and good quality punk/post-punk/etc staples filling the bins. I get really overwhelmed or tense in a lot of record stores because there's so much too-cool-for-school posturing or they're just trying to do too much, but I felt really comfortable here. I saw lots of stuff I wanted without having to sift for hours, and I feel like if I wanted them to find something or order something for me I wouldn't get made fun of. I got a book because I am so cool that I go to the record store and buy books (pushes glasses up nose, hits inhaler) and the girl who rang it up for us was super nice and gave us 10% off just because. I want to come back right now and curl up at their listening station until they kick me out, which they'd probably do in the friendliest and most non-judgmental way possible. read more

In the case of "VG" and lesser condition records, the prices are gouging for what you are being offered. I am surprised that they can keep the doors open with the beaten, ringworn copies of records that they have as the majority of their stock. My only guess is that people don't care or aren't knowledgeable about pricing in regard to condition. There is a grading system for a reason folks. People seem to be accepting this garbage out of ignorance or because they are "used" records, without realizing that there are cleaner copies online or elsewhere for the same, if not less. Why support brick and mortar if this is what is being offered? Until the fools get wise...... read more

There's two stores right across the street from each other- one has more bargain bins than the other. Staff in both are very friendly and inviting. I went in this weekend and they were having a $0.25 and $1 sale on bargain records and I found 8 in great conditions. read more

In the midst of moving out of my house of 23 years, we stumbled across a ton of old records that my grandma had been hoarding in a closet. I swung by yesterday with all of them to see if maybe Permanent Records would want to add them to their collection. Lance diligently went through all of the boxes pulling the ones that are resell worthy. Honestly, he was like a machine going through those things! Unfortunately for me, there is not a huge demand for Robert Goulet records cuz I had a ridiculous amount in those boxes!! Haha He did find a handful and offered me a really great price! Besides being someone that is up to date on all most all types of music Lance really knows to operate a business. He is very knowledgeable when customers come into the store with questions on who is who in the music and record industry. He not only knows the digital end of the equipment he also knows how to wire a system. I couldn't ask for a better friend. My wife and I have known Lance for about 15 years now and he treats us the same today as he did when first met him. The prices are fair and the records are great. It's a bit pretentious but that's what you would expect on York in HLP. They have a decent selection but it's best to go with an open mind rather than with your mind set on something. I like that you can actually browse their new records on their website, though it's not totally reliable, as one of the two records they said they had was not actually there...again, open mind. They have two locations across from each other and they are both worth checking out. The smaller location has more rock. If you know what you are getting from the other location, you can pay all together at one location. Worth checking out if you are the store to buy records...excuse me, vinyl (eye roll). read more

One star review due to the handling of record store day. Rather cynical to take photos of people who had waited for hours to get the Wax Trax record, when they knew full well they were going to be disappointed ( only 5 copies in each store ). Wax Trax was in both stores - but the one on the Hermosillo side only had that / no other RSD exclusives. There were about 20 people waiting in line - they could have come out before opening and told us that most of us were wasting our time if we only wanted Wax Trax. Particularly as there were no other RSD releases on that side. Instead they had us all file in there and took a photo of 5 happy people and 15 disappointed people. I also overhead staff saying they often only have 2 or 3 copies of RSD releases. I know that RSD is all about exclusives - but if it's that limited, it's kind of a waste of time. So very badly handled overall I think. Definitely will not bother going back in future for RSD - and it kind of puts me off going there in general. read more

Ridiculously overpriced. I have buying records for about 35 years. This place is gouging customers.

My girlfriend and I gave his place a try last week and were surprised by the number of records this place has! There's a good variety of stuff (most of the other reviewers pretty much hit it on the nail) and there's plenty of records to gloss through per genre. My only complaint would be the prices and conditions of the records. Most of the records here are on average $15-$25 and while some of them are in pretty good condition vinyl wise, the covers are sometimes a mess. We bought a Cure record that had some wear on the cover (no biggie for us) but the record loops in some areas and it just felt not worth the price. Either way not complaining too much as we did walk away with 4 records and perfectly happy with all of them. read more

A great selling experience! As a middle aged person going to sell my old records in a hip neighborhood, I was prepared for some serious bad record store attitudes, but I could not have had a more pleasant experience. Lance was extremely friendly, and maybe it was because I established that I knew what my records were worth, but he paid fairly and I ended up with a nice mix of cash and trade (that I thought was priced very fairly, btw). When ever I'm in east LA, I have to stop by. Great selection, and cool staff. Definitely worth it. I always find some good deals. Don't be discouraged if you see some high prices on some of the records that seem more common. They are very good at pricing based on the grade of records and rarity of the pressing. I buy a lot of vinyl. I am familiar with a number of stay-the-course record stores in the Los Angeles area. I am glad they are still here. Permanent Records (PR) also sells on discogs under LA_Rarities. But I decided to visit the store in person recently to pick up some LPs purchased online. First, I believe PR staff tries to be helpful. Their style might lack bedside manner, but I long ago gave up expecting to see John Cusack in the vinyl stacks biz. Prices are fair for purchase (no experience selling to PR) and the store is laid out decently. I think each title, especially used, is individually priced - so being certain of which pressing might be best. I bought the "LA Pressing" of Fear of Music (FoM) here which goes for significantly lower online ($15 for NearMint instead of $20 for VG+). However, other FoM pressings are much more pricey (north of $50). Also, I purchased 3 other LPs from PR and 2 were below market. So, there is a give & take. BTW - I saw the other comparisons, and I visited the other Highland Park record store - and did not find it a better experience (disinterested staff instead of attitude?) nor a better value (unless you wanted vinyl of questionable quality). The PR online guy did spout a lot of rules to me, but I think he was simply trying to be helpful, not off-putting. Bottomline, pleased there are brick/mortar places to visit when I tire of online browsing and grateful PR is stacking for us. read more
