my husband got a giftcard from this shop (literally a handwritten note that said he had $50 credit) after reading the reviews I said we should to go in with low/no expectations and that a giftcard is nice and worth the trip- i'm not sure why there were so many bad reviews. the place was organized, the owner was super nice, he had suggestions, it was a pleasant day, we were a tiny bit over the giftcard and the owner made it an even sale. we will be back, the selection was great and the location is wonderful, made for a really nice afternoon. read more

Wow, the different reviews on here are kind of fascinating. I'm trying to think what accounts the stratification. One person gave one star because they parked illegally, and the owner wouldn't kick out his customers and lock up to move his car. Wow, that's fair to give him one star. I've met Joey twice now, and I'm gonna believe him, and this women felt emmbarrassed because he told her how to handle the record properly, and not scratch it. I'm sure people mishandle stuff and ruin his inventory. A guy gave 1 star 'cause it was closed. He was upset since he supports small busineses. If you really support indie stores like you say, you would know many are sole proprietors that might close for an emergency. So you call and make sure they're open. The big givaway as to many people's credibility was their comment on price and selection. If you thought the selection sucked, and prices were too high, then this isn't your world. Go to Amoeba and buy their remastered overpriced garbage. If you know vinyl, and the proper etiquitte, then I think you'll get along just fine. Actually you'll get great stuff. I've visited about 10 places locally in the last 6 months, as I was buying stuff on discogs.com but I wanted the fun of the hunt and to go out. And this made it worth it. I swear, for me this had the most stuff I wanted, at the best price, undercutting discogs.com if not outright then when you factor in postage. I spent 15 minutes on just the first row of new stock alone. You can scan the bar code on most records, and it will tell you the price for that exact pressing on discogs.com. And you can look it up other ways if its pre-ISBN. They had some awesome records priced well. There was an original pressing of Love and Rocket's Express, Two Brian Eno album from the 70's (music for films, take tiger mountain, both unplayed) a great Byrds collection from Sundazed of outtakes. I got She Sells Sanctuary, a mint 12" of the single, good 2 LP Zombies Comp. I could have spent $200 and gotten mint unplayed records that were cheaper than on discogs. I LOOKED EACH ONE UP. That's how I know. I looked up a lot of the other people's reviews who left 1 star reviews. When I saw their other reviews, I understood about half of them. They like chain stores, they watch Friends reruns. It's leans toward people who know how to handle a record, and can be chill, and become regular customers, and form a relationship. I There were a couple of what seemed like people who knew there way around a record store, who were unhappy. Not sure what happened there. Maybe Joey wasn't at his best and did not come off well. But that was the exception. A lot of the other one star reviews I think were people looking for, I don't know what the kids buy today, Katy Perry? Oh also good Dylan and Beatles bootlegs. This isn't Best Buy, where they're going to greet you, with a huge smile and all that crap. They don't carry Taylor Swift. Most other countries in the world, they don't accost you with a smile at the door, and beg for your business. That's not normal; it's uniquely fake and American, but most American don't read or travel so they know nothing. The 1 star reviews, their other reviews told me half of those peopler were useless and didn't know anything about records They probably wanted brand new records (which are basically digital files pressed to vinyl) If you thought the selection sucked and they were overpriced then you know nothing. The fun of record shopping is going through the stacks and finding Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, 1st pressing, unplayed. He had a nice John McLaughlin record I didn't know of. (If his name is totally foreign, this store isn't for you. He played on this record Bitches Brew by this nobody Miles Davis. Not important) And if you trade in your records, guess what, you don't get retail prices. I was not impressed with the people who gave one stars and I don't think he even wants your business. And he's probably seen so many people screw up the records that he comes over and asks if you're looking for something specific because of how you acted. Records have only come back into the mainstream maybe for the last 7 yrs, not sure, And I genuinely thought half the people who left 1 star reviews were dilettants and wouldn't want what he sells there. The other 1 star reviews, I'm not sure of. Maybe that's on Joey. So I'm gonna say the 5 star reviews were legit, as were some of the one star reviews. Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he's sick of stupid people who show no deference for things they know nothing about. Revolution Records is a small store in the middle of Melrose everything. It's impossible not to pass by if you walk around. The place is a tad dark, they don't carry a lot of merchandise. What they have it's diverse enough: vinyl, t-shirts, tapes, CD-s, a bit of everything. Prices are kinda high and customer service can be better. Closed Mondays. I came for the comic shop (will not soil their great name with any association to this place), and I parked in the back. In the year that I've been coming to this shop, weekly to play DND until the pandemic hit, I've never had a problem with being back here, which was every week because street parking was full on weekdays: I would never park here if I wasn't a patron to one of the businesses in the front. Having been so used to coming back here, I didn't think twice about parking in the available spot when I stopped by to stock up on comics pre-lockdown # 2 I came back to my car being blocked- okay. I waited maybe 10 minutes thinking the owner would return. They didn't, so I asked the comic shop if it was one of them. No. They checked the camera and said it was the record shop. I went in, asked the guy if he knew who owned the TOYOTA 4 RUNNER. Immediately, he angrily said "I can't here you!" so I asked louder. He said "Yes, I do" I said "okay, can you move it?" He said angrily "when my customers leave" I said "okay" and turned to leave Then he angrily continued "You don't live up there, why did you park there?" I said "I went to the comic shop" He angrily said "there's signs all over saying no parking" I said, "I thought it was allowed if I was a patron at a shop" He angrily glared and shook his head. So I'm out here, waiting for him to move, and it's been some time. He only had two people in his store so unless they're really into records, I'm sure he's doing it on purpose. It's fine, I have yelp to pass the time. Oh, and allll those signs he said were posted? This is the only sign from my vantage point. A sign that's not even in front of every spot. Meanwhile, the side of the wall where he could have parked but didn't has a better visible one. Can you guess why I don't park there? Because that one is obvious! I've popped into this record store a few times over the years and the guy who works there with grey hair and glasses is just a miserable person. Always cranky and rude. I hadn't been there in awhile and popped in this weekend. I was flipping through the records and he came up to me and said "hey if you're gonna flip through the records do it like THIS" and then proceeds to show me how to flip through records! I'm a vinyl collector and go record shopping several times a week, I've never had someone tell me how to flip through their records, and I promise you I wasn't doing anything weird. I was on my lunch break doing my regular walk along Melrose. I pass this record store all the time. I first went in this shop back when I started my job in 2019 - a very not so friendly experience! I hadn't gone back until today. I figured it's been over 3 years, maybe the vibes are better? Nope! Got worse. The shop owner is a total jerk, and dare I say, a little racist. It started when I walked in the store - it was just me and him. No hello, just stares. I pushed through the awkwardness though and immediately went crate diving. ~ 5 mins had passed, when he begrudgingly asks if he can help me find something I might be looking for? I meet his pessimistic tone with a more pleasant one and let him know that I'm good, I'm just browsing and thanked him for asking. Can y'all believe this man rolled his eyes? LMAOOOOOO. Who gets annoyed at someone growing through the crates at a record store??? Mind you, at this point another patron had been in the store with me. Y'all think he asked him if he needed help at that time as well? I'll let you guess the color of his skin too. Y'all can make your conclusions just like I did, ha! Now, I should've definitely left at that moment, but honestly, knowing my presence was upsetting him that much kinda made me chuckle, so I kept on with my dive. He lets me know that he needs to close up for 5 mins and asks me to leave the store. Coward! I came in Revolution Records not expecting much. The quantity isn't as much as other shops and I honestly expected to find nothing but old jazz and classical records. I was completely WRONG! Once you get to digging you will start finding some gems. From reggae to extreme metal they have something for everyone! But by far my favorite part of visiting was chatting up with the owner. This guy is a straight OG! He knows his stuff and I love his enthusiasm when talking about bands. You can tell this guy love what he does and is a straight hustler when finding things for his shop. Don't be discouraged when reading the reviews. He's just a guy running his shop the way he sees fit. 10/10 will come back again! There's been records store in the past where they have a large inventory but majority is junk and over priced. Not Revolution Records. They have quality here! Also it's priced very well! I HIGHLY recommend this store! Their selection may seem small upon first glance, but it packs a punch. If you're a seasoned collector, someone who only recently bought a turntable and needs records to put on the platter, or just looking for a gift to give your friend who's into vinyl, you should definitely stop in. They have a surprisingly good selection of Classic Rock, Punk, Jazz, Misc, and entire bins dedicated to rare records for the collectors (which I seldom see stores do). I visit record stores throughout LA and much of the United States actually, and this is probably among my favorites. By far the best record store in West Hollywood (which I think it qualifies as being in) Certainly the best of the 3 record stores on this side of Melrose, not as large of a selection as they Record Parlour per se, but very rewarding and honestly, with better prices on staple records (not knocking the Record Parlour, they're great too). I have never written a yelp review for anything, and never felt compelled to do so until I went to Revolution Records today (also I do not work for the store, nor do I actually know the owner aside from visiting the store, I'm just incredibly appreciative of this store, and I really hope more people can check it out!) My teen daughter wanted to buy a record for her friend's birthday on Amazon. I suggested we go to a real life used record store to 1) support mom and pop brick and mortar, and 2) introduce her to the delight of browsing through the treasure chest of possible finds through the alphabetical record bins. When we arrived, the older white haired man working there told my daughter and her friend he had to close the shop for 15 min. So we patiently come back to the store excited to find a record. So as we perused the racks, the older man started to admonish us for not putting the records exactly as they were originally in the bin - they were originally tilted backwards, When you browse, they fall forward in the bin. Then he proceeded to walk to the bins next to us and made a point of putting the records exactly as they were, perfectly leaning back to the wall, with great exaggeration. I said out loud, "This is the worst shopping experience I've ever experienced!" (I'm just too old for this!) I found a record in a bin but I couldn't find the same of the song, so he told me to open the record to view it.....I was struggling to get the record out of the sleeve.....and then he came to my bin and AGAIN, with great exaggeration, moved all the records in my bin so that they were perfectly back to the original state, lecturing me about how the whys. I had pulled a record out for just 3 minutes and wasn't even done looking in the bin! Then he had the gall to tell me that if I put my ice cream cup down, I can use two hands. At this point, I said, "My ice cream cup is on that other table, I am using my two hands, AND I wouldn't have had to buy an ice cream if you hadn't closed your store for 15 minutes! Forget it, let's not buy any record here!" And my teen daughter, shrinking in embarrassment, said "please sir, I'd like to buy this Madonna record". She is too young to identify jerks. I held my nose and bought the record for her (which by the way was even MORE expensive than a new one on Amazon)....then she called her younger sister to let her know we just were at this record store on Melrose....and her sister says, "the one with the mean white haired man? I said I liked Michael Jackson and he told me I had terrible taste in music!" That's when I looked at the store's Yelp reviews, and realized, his treatment was not personal to us. First and last time I'll go here. From the outside it looks like a good record store. Well organized, music playing on a vintage set-up, cassette tapes. But the guy behind the counter who I'm assuming is the owner didn't seem to want me or the person I was with in his store. I could tell from the size up look he gave me when I first walked in. I make it a point not to touch anything unless I know I'm serious about buying but as I was looking at the sticker prices I realized they we're a bit to high for my liking. Now underneath is where the 1.00-5.00$ records were. These I immediately dived into, even though I didn't find anything I liked. The 1 star part of my story. As I was looking through this section the guy behind the counter was now in the aisle behind me and repeatedly saying in a low sardonic tone "Jesus...Jesus...Jesus...". This is when I decided to leave. Definetly the worst record store experience I've had. Luckily there's other's I've been to and really like. Whenever I travel, I always hit a record store. And nearly always BUY stuff. And, I really loved the records in this shop. They seriously had the most Iggy Pop and Stooges I'd ever seen in one place. Also, so many rarer records I had in my hand to buy at $20-$30 a pop! Worth it for a quality find- even if overpriced. I entered the store in a mobility scooter and the guy at the counter didn't even acknowledge me. Did he think I was a derelict because I'm disabled? I browsed for several minutes in the Punk/New Wave section, where I wanted one of each of almost everything I saw, but just felt him scowling at me from his perch. While I was collecting the vinyl I was going to buy, three women who looked like they walked out of 1982 came through the door. He immediately went to greet them and proceeded to excitedly talk about his Bauhaus and Siouxsie posters he had in the back. While in the back, the women and I laughed and joked about brawling as we (pretend) fought for the same stuff. So, when the dude came out, I tried to get a peek at the cool stuff he was showing them. He turned his back to me, looked at them and asked, "Is she with you?" When they replied no and indicated that we were just chatting - he rudely moved to another part of the store to make the sale. He was SO friendly to them that the contrast was extremely noticeable and made me very uncomfortable. Throughout my visit, I asked him a couple questions to indicate I was a serious buyer and complimented him on his collection. All I got were one-word answers and a couple of disinterested grunts. I finally got fed up when he went behind me to the bins I was searching and huffily reorganized them. I set my stuff down and rolled outta there. I'll spend my hundreds elsewhere, thanks. read more

I visit about 40 independently owned record shops around the country a year and buy about 50+ records a year. Unfortunately this one was the worst experience I've ever had. First, the prices are high - maybe 20-30%. I wouldn't mind that normally because I will pay more for a well curated selection with clean used vinyl and decent customer service. This was none of those things. The used vinyl is, for the most part, dirty, in less than average condition, and the selection is just so-so. Nothing you can't find someplace else where the people are decent. But the worst part was the "service" of the guy working there who I think is the owner. We walked around the store and checked a few bins. My wife was interested in a shirt, I saw a few records that piqued my curiosity but the owner could not be bothered to acknowledge our presence. Then he got rude. As we left my adult daughter thanked him for letting us browse. I was outside the door on the sidewalk taking a picture of their sign - because I always try to snap a pic of record stores to post online as I travel so I remember them for next time. As I finished the owner yelled out the door "PUT YOIR PHONE AWAY." I was outside on the sidewalk mind you. I looked in and said "what?" and he said "NO PHOTOS." I said, "it's a sign on the sidewalk. What do you mean?" He said "you can't take photos." At this point I got chippy. I said "actually I can take pictures on a public sidewalk all day long and if you want to call the police I'll wait here for them." He told me it's rude to take a picture of a sign on the sidewalk. So, that's the kind of guy you're dealing with. He's such a brilliant businessman that he doesn't want you spreading his signage around social media. Which is probably why his store was empty on a sunny Spring afternoon in one of the busiest shopping districts in LA. That and he's doesn't care about customers. I had a really good, fun experience there. Me and the owner talked for probably 30 minutes about music and bands and he referred me to two great CDs by Black angels for my car. Everything went fine. Nothing noteworthy to complain about at all. He asked if I could lean the vinyl back and I did, nothing crazy there though I figured it was just his store display preference. His own personality is a little jarring in ways but nothing I haven't seen before. Pretty normal shopping experience with just a quirky white haired dude running it. Joey has hand picked a selection of all the vinyl gems you could ever ask for -- not to mention vintage T-shirts, posters, cassettes and anything else a music nerd like myself could want. Probably the worst experience at a record store ever. I said hi to the owner which flat out ignored me and then started to push vinyls back that I hadn't touched while sighing and saying things under his breath. My cousin who is visiting out of town asked him a question & he didn't even want to answer her so we walked out. We later realized he immediately locked up and left after us. This is a really cool record shop on Melrose, stocked with tons of used vinyl records. They have a bunch of rare gems up on the walls, and the bins are stocked with lots of interesting discs. I thought the owner was friendly, we had a brief conversation about Ray Davies. I picked up a vintage pressing of 'Something Else By The Kinks', which was in great shape (still in the shrink).
