Perry is like the Don of beach bike rental. There are about 6 or 7 blue stands lining the boardwalk from Venice up to the Palisades. Rentals are straightforward with a license and credit card needed up front. There are plenty of bikes to choose from too. From the corny "I'm SO a tourist from Norway" tricycles to the "I am SO a tourist from New York" chopper bikes. We opted for the "tourist from the SFV" beach cruisers and got our swerve on. In two hours you can go North to where the sidewalk ends then double back and hit the action at Venice Pier before making your return while moving at a leisurely pace! Or you can just go get drunk. You do pay extra for the location but it's worth it. If your looking for high end customer service, this is not your place. It's a beach cafe and there is only counter service unless you get the Beach Butler which is awesome but expensive. They serve you on the beach at the water front. Very romantic! My husband and I were on a crazy 35 mile bike ride of the strand and stopped here for a quick break and lunch. They had a decent variety of menu items to choose from. The prices were overpriced, as to be expected, but the portion we received was decent. We were able to eat at a table in the sand....and I love eating with my toes in the sand, with a view of the ocean. This review is for the cafe alone: This past weekend I was in LA for a bachlorette party and staying right down the beach from Perry's in Santa Monica. Sunday morning, about 10 of us wanted to grab something to eat before having to leave for the airport. I had passed perry's the day before while walking along the beach and thought it would be a quick and easy spot for such a large group. We showed up around 11 and had to be in taxi's by noon. Piece of cake right? No. I knew it was a bad sign when I got to the window to place my order and after stating "I'll have the fish tacos and a large coke" got nothing but a blank stare. The employee literally looked as though I had made the most complicated and ridiculous request. I have to say, my overall impression is that the people working the counter here have less than a full deck of playing cards, as all 10 of us had a pretty similar ordering experience with more than one person. My fish tacos and soda were $14, took 30 minutes to make, and had noo taste. Really the only upside was that it was nice to sit outside and people watch. read more

My family came from out of town specifically to rent bikes and ride, and NOWHERE on the website is there any reference to CASH ONLY. Yes, there IS an ATM inside (sketch), but none of us brought ATM cards or enough cash to cover the expense, only credit cards. Also, the weird thing is they hold your credit card info but you need to pay cash. Strange, and weird. Suggestion: update your website to reflect your cash only policy, so people know in advance. read more

This past Saturday morning on a whim my wife and I decided to walk down and get some coffee on the beach. I figured we'd get a burrito while we were at it. Unfortunately, my intuition about this place was pretty spot-on. The service was not great. My cup of coffee was just slightly more than halfway full. My burrito took about 20 minutes to come out. Take this place at face value: it's a convenient spot to grab a bite to eat or a drink on the beach, and prices are comparable to other spots in downtown SM. Stopped riding my bike with friends to grab a drink and a quick bite. I ordered a meal that had 2 slices of pizza I substituted the salad for fries, 2 bottles of water on the side and an extra small drink no ice. They didn't tell me there wasn't any pizza and we had to wait longer which resulted in returning our rented bikes late. A customer didn't pick up their order of fries so when I went up closer the lil lady who took my order asked me what I was waiting for. Then she asked did I want to start with the fries that the person didn't take because my pizza is cooking since they ran out. WTF. Why would I want these fries that have been sitting here woman? She's been coming here religiously every weekend and loves the fact that not only is short term parking is cheap and plentiful, but also that this place is not crowded. What you do: order first then grab seats on the sand. Preferably by the bike path (just a mere suggestion to up your viewing pleasure). What a great spot to people watch. Ordered: High Tide Burger - served on a sesame brioche bun, topped with a couple of onion rings. This burger really hit the spot. Moist beef Gravy fries -maybe it's the whole poutine boom, but I found this to be a simple dish but tasty enough. Ambience was great. Quite laissez faire. You can literally just sit there for hours. They do offer some other services. That being said, not only will I be coming back to rent out a couple of bikes, I need to investigate this butler service of theirs. read more

One of their workers named Maria, gave me a croissant I had ordered today. I gave it back to Maria and asked her if I could exchange it, because it was stale. She gave me another one, but that one was stale too. I went back to tell Maria, thinking I could just get a refund, but instead I got an attitude as well. She proceeded with talking to her manager in Spanish, obviously so I couldn't understand what they were saying. And all she said after giving me the refund was "here" and she handed me my money back. This place rented a tandem bike to us where the chain fell off. I called to ask them what to do and they said to just switch it out at the blazing saddles at the pier next to the gas station. When we got there they didnt have tandem bikes so we had to get separate bikes to ride. And all this effort and we still got charged 2 hours...a lot of wasted time and frustration. The bikes were all old and rusted. Im going to give this place 3 stars but the other place 2 stars, since this place let us have two bikes nice but the other place gave us rundown bike. But here at the review, i might give them a pity star because they were nice enough to try and help us find a solution. On a side note though, biking on the beach is a really fun thing to do!! This is one of the few Cafes that Perry's has on the boardwalk. What originally caught our eye was the seating that they provide. It is beach like with sand, beach/patio chairs and umbrellas. We decided to stop here to get something quick to eat. We got the quesadilla and the fries with a large drink. Nothing too fancy so there isn't much more to say. went here for bike rentals. Nothing fancy, but they were quick. My friend took care of all the logistics, but based on bikes alone, they were okay. My guess is that from all the beach air, the bikes get worn down a little quicker. We also refused helmets. They make sure you write that you refuse a helmet on the waiver form if you don't want to wear one. My wife and I wanted to check out a tandem bike and they let us ride it around the lot to see if we like it. I appreciated that. They helped fix the seats a bit too. The bike itself was a little off. I never rode a tandem before, but I noticed every other tandem was in sync with their pedals. My bike was slightly off where my wife and I were not exactly in sync although I don't think it really affected anything. The bike did have 3 gears which helped get me though some slight uphills. I was able to go up and down the santa monica bike path with not much trouble. The bike held up. read more

As I rode my bike with my friends down to the Santa Monica Pier we came upon this place as we were hungry. It didn't look offensive with the umbrella and cool on-the-beach location. I ordered the classic burger and fries. Price was a little on the pricier side but with all the food that came with it I wasn't too offended by it. The burger was good, cooked well, and served fresh. Nothing offensive about it and I would enjoy it again, but it was not mouth watering burger by any means. Same went for the fries, as I enjoyed them too to the same degree and brough them home even! The wait time wasn't too bad and with a location like that, I didn't mind waiting, drinkning a soda under an umbrella and taking a breather after the long bike ride. Overall a decent to good place. What a fantastic day we spent at Perry's!! We did the Beach Butler as party to end our celebration weekend. It was perfect. The setting is unbeatable. Right by the ocean. Our Butler Sheldon was amazing. He set up our chairs before we got there. He brought us water, took our food orders and brought out the food -- 3 times!! Everything was so tasty. Came here with a friend who was visiting from the East Coast to grab a bite before we went to the beach. Saw that they had a special for Salmon jasmine rice and sautéed spinach. Sounded pretty delicious so I ordered it. I go to pick up my meal and I see grilled salmon, steamed spinach and Spanish rice. When I asked the girl behind the counter if the rice I saw on my plate was Spanish rice, she said yes. (Jasmine Rice is white and not seasoned with Spanish spices or peppers).
