I love a small, local pet supply store. Items that are hard to find, samples, nice people and a little community. Found this place a few years back and have been coming since. They have a good rodent section, and sometimes even have little ratties as shop friends. Love it. Great selection of pet supplies and lots of local vendors, our dog's favorite are these biscuits they have, all natural, so you know what you're feeling your fur baby. Cute little pet boutique that's far too easy to miss; I wouldn't have even known was here, had we not stopped for lunch at The Observatory next door! Carries a healthy selection of high quality pet foods, treats, toys, leashes and harnesses, accessories, hygiene products, beds and the like. And there's a couple of handsome kitters working as greeters, who will insist on your attention at some point during your visit! The staff seem to be relatively friendly and engaging, and although I am not a fan of the still-required masking policy, especially considering how spacious and sparsely populated the store is, that's a minor inconvenience. If your pets are a priority in your life, and this shop is in your neighborhood, do them a favor: skip the big box stores, do your personal be(a)st, and shop here for their nutritional and health needs! read more

I ended up here because I was having lunch in this neighborhood, and then needed a few pet store items. All's I can say is that I will be returning to visit Freddy the cat. He is so lovely. I was trying to decide what type of cat litter to try next because my kitty has decided lately to pee on the couch. Anyhow, Freddy jumped up next to me on a bag of litter that apparently was his personal fave, so I decided to give it a go. That's basically what I needed to know. If you're a cat, what type of litter might entice you back to the litter box? And yes, I have also tried multiple different boxes in multiple locations. Then Freddy decided that being pet was really nice, but he also wanted to be held and walked onto me. That was the cherry on the cake, on a day when I really needed a cat cuddle. I''ve been coming to PB for about 6 years now. They are always very helpful. And knowledges in all their products. They are patient too. I have a couple of very picky cats and have had to return multiple pet food products, which I feel horrible about but they have assured me every time the food still gets used and they aren't losing money when I do. This has definitely earned them a lifetime customer with me. They will also give you samples to try with your pet so you don't have to buy an entire bag. Which is great because the food isn't cheap. (Anywhere, not just at PB) They have a great selection and they research every food product to make sure it's sourced well and is good for your pet. read more

So glad I found this pet store in my neighborhood! The staff are so friendly and helpful. They seem to be extremely knowledgeable too which I really appreciate. The store is stocked with only high quality items (at very reasonable prices!) for your pets so you never have to go in and debate which will be best for your little friend. Thankfully I read signs that are posted with context clues. It looks like a decent store but there's multiple cats wondering around and 2 reactive dogs behind the counter. Was hoping to take my dogs shopping here but it's not very welcoming to bringing your own pets in. Definitely one way to deter customers and the ones consuming products. Would recommend a sign that states no dogs welcome. read more

Met TriPod here a few months ago when picking up my cat food supplies. He's gone now because he found a home!!! YAY! He was of the 3 legged purr-sasion.. sweet boy. They have cats from Mult. Co. Animal shelter here all ready for you to adopt. This includes shots/and chip! The animal shelter is overfull right now so these sweet cats are going cheap, FYI. They let them roam around from time to time but I cannot imagine how that must drive them crazy with all the food smells!!!! I have 2 senior cats so I need special food to keep them going. Not only do I love this place because they have a lot of variety of different foods, I love that it's a local place. My favorite part though is that they are next to The Observatory so it's like a one stop shop/eat/drink place for me! read more

I love Salty's. I drive up to Mississippi and Fremont from Clackamas, just to go there to buy treats. And what do I see while I'm walking down Stark? A NEW Salty's, closer to home! I will have to save my five stars for when I go to buy treats, to see if it has the same great service. But peeking in the window, it looks like the same great goods I've come to expect on Mississippi, but in a bigger space. I saw the table of organic treats and animal parts. The dog food we buy, "Wee Bit," in the princessy pink shiny bag, was sitting next to the front door, in two different sizes. Oola has eaten the last bunch of treats I bought, it's time to stock up again! Check the website for hours. I'll be going and will update, I bet to 5 stars, soon. I went in and the store is bigger and more wonderful than the Mississippi location (which was recently broken into and ransacked, shame on the bad person who did that), with a lot more choices and products. The owner was there, as always was helpful, and I got a LOT of treats for Oola, as well as three new toys. She took the 10% coupon that I had for the other store. Salty's remains our favorite dog store ever. read more

These guys continue to just be awesomeness personified. I had forgotten to pick up food for one of my dogs (Clementine, 3-1/2 yo Irish Setter) for a few days until finally she ran out, which I only realized minutes before they closed. It wouldn't be that big a deal if she didn't have to eat a kangaroo-based food because of her horrible allergies to virtually every other protein source. But, she is so she is, right? Anyway, I hurried down to Personal Beast and got there just minutes after closing. I tentatively knocked on the glass and explained my dilemma and asked if the were anywhere else I could go at 7pm on a Tuesday to get Zignature Kangaroo. Curtis, my new favorite person after my wife, parents, siblings, and my buddy TJ I've known since 3rd grade... Curtis offered to give me some free samples of that very same food to hold Clementine over until I can come back tomorrow during business hours. Thanks, Curtis and the whole PB crew. This is an awesome local pet store featuring quality local and natural products (as well as some of the better big brands), toys, accessories, and the like. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to help you find the right stuff for that special little furry someone. Pets are welcome in the store (as it should be with all pet stores) as well. This is in my hood, so I try to support as often as I can. While we go through too much cat food feeding the colony of strays that live on our street to buy anything bur the Purina Naturals (srsly, it's like feeding a couple of kids!) I still stop in from time to time for treats, special wet cat food, gifts, and the like. Good stuff for good dogs and good cats. read more

They sell individual-dose Advantage! This is a huge plus for me - it's a lot easier to put out $15 at a time, rather than the $59 for a several months' supply. Good selection of healthy/natural dog and cat foods at reasonable prices (not extra-expensive as, unfortunately, some independent stores have to be). The woman working was very helpful. She knew all the products and was able to take what I told her about my cat and recommend some good products. I'll definitely be shopping here from now on instead of Petco. read more

I just discovered Salty's and I'm so glad I did!! My two kitties require limited ingredient food and I've been shelling out $35 bucks at the vet for prescription food for 3 years now, but not anymore!!! Salty's has better quality limited ingredient food for a fraction of the cost (less than half!!) and my boys like it better. Would it be wrong to say I LOVE this place?? Well, I do. My cat is newly diagnosed with IBD and I am in new territory with her special diet. The vet gave me instructions, but the woman who working when I went in talked me through all the different varieties and benefits of different products. She was so nice! Salty's, now known as Personal Beast, is truly a great pet store. They do everything a pet store should and more. They have a huge selection of really quality pet products and know the product well. Staff is friendly but not pushy. These guys support animal welfare, which is extremely important to me and fits well with the Portland culture. They work with Multnomah County Animal Services a lot, have adoptable pets on site, and even hold volunteer trainings there! They also have a training area on-site where you can take your dog for positive training classes. read more

I spend a LOT of money in this store, and with good reason. They have fantastic options for all sorts of pets, and their sales team is very knowledgeable and helpful. One of my dogs has arthritis, so he needs food without poultry or white potatoes. He's also a bit of a chunker, so he's got to have a high protein, low carb type food (I know, I know - I do treat my anipals like kids, but I love them and they make me happy so whatever). Personal Beast has several options for him, and they also have a gluclosamine and chondroitin supplement that he actually wants to eat. Yay! My cat also will only eat Solid Gold cat food with chicken - no joke, he won't even eat fresh fish as a treat. He's super weird. PB always has the food I need for the dudes, and they have all of the extras that I buy (cat scratch pads, #2 bags, shampoos, ear cleaning wipes, CBD oil treats, toys, life jackets, work vests...yeah...they have a little closet). One of my favorite things about this store is the loose treat section. They must work with a local dog treat bakery, because they have big glass jars full of treats that are super inexpensive. My other dog has THE WORST breath - I won't get in to details, but it does ruin cuddle time if it's not taken care of. Super gross. One of the loose treats they sell is a charcoal treat made for little guys like him who just have raunchy stink face. They really do help, and so he gets quite a lot of these treats. Also! They have a loyalty reward program - every $150 you spend, you get a $10 credit. It's pretty great! I would definitely check them out if you have pets; I bet they have whatever you're looking for. read more

I was up Stark without a leash. Then I found Salty's. Nancy, at the front counter, went out of her way to help me find exactly the right leash at a decent price. She also pointed me to a training halter that was the perfect solution to my pup's budding penchant of chasing cars (not the best habit on Stark) and went out of her way to show me how it worked. I rarely take the time to write reviews on here, but this is certainly a worthwhile exception. my cat wet the bed, through the sheets and into the mattress, so I rushed in a half hour before they closed and asked the lady at the counter what would work best for my situation. she explained they were out of what she would normally suggest but checked their storage room for any backstock they may have had.. when she came back out she handed me a bottle of their store supply, explained what it was and how to use it and wished me good luck, no charge! I am extremely grateful for her kindness in making an awful situation a little easier. This is officially my new go-to pet supply store! read more

I just got my first dog on Saturday. I walked into this place and asked "what does someone who owns a dog need to have...for said dog?" I have been back 3 or 4 times since that pseudo-initial visit (I had been in before for catfood and litter) with various questions and concerns involving my new little chap and the state of his tummy/fur/mood/nails/...and so on and so on. Every single person who works here is patient and helpful. Most of (if not all) the people who shop here are equally patient and helpful. I've already gotten at least $30 discounted from the various items I've purchased here. Seriously, I have nothing even close to negative to say about this shop. AND they are open untill 7:00pm. Nothing in this friggin' city is open past 6pm because people don't, you know, have jobs during the day all week long. read more

These are are just half a mile away from my home and I couldn't be any happier. They carry both my dog and cat's food (Taste of the Wild and Instinct). They have a customer loyalty program - so for every $100 you spend you'll get $10 off your next purchase. They carry a large selection of toys, snacks, and other odds and ends. The staff has been very helpful every time I've been in too. I asked if they carried compostable dog poop bags and the gal looked up their bags online and gave me the proper information. Unfortunately they didn't, but they do carry biodegradable bags. Another nice thing was they gave me free samples of cat treats for "halloween" trick or treaters. I called today to find some Earthbath shampoo and the customer service was great. The gentleman let me know they didn't have the specific kind I was looking for but could have it in less than 2 business days. Wow!! He even asked coworkers for advice about the shampoo and assured me they had something that could work for me. He completely went out of his way. It was awesome! When I came in to look around for a different shampoo, I was warmly greeted. The woman behind the counter was polite and engaging. She offered suggestions without being pushy at all and asked us all about our pups (which you know us pet owners love). She told me about their locally made bar soap and we can't wait to try it! It has an AMAZING ingredient list (including neem) and even better smell. Their selection of harnesses is really great. Somehow I found something to suit both my 65 lb fluffy chow and my 15 lb funny shaped Doxie mix. I ride a motorcycle so bringing the dogs in to try things on is a challenge. I was assured that I could return the harnesses as long as the tags were still on. I don't even need a receipt because I signed up with their rewards program! Pretty cool and awesomely convenient. Overall, I'm really impressed. The store was small so I can see how they wouldn't be able to stock a lot of food variety (I didn't look honestly... I was in a hurry) but the customer service at this place makes me feel pretty confident that they would do whatever they could. Update: The harness we got for our chow didn't really work out so we brought it back and exchanged it with no hassle AT ALL! We found another one in their awesome selection and it works perfect. They were so friendly and accommodating. The Portland made bar shampoo we got (Clean Canine by Molly Muriel) is seriously the best stuff EVER! I was worried it wouldn't last but WOW! A little goes a long way and it rinses away so clean and easy. My dogs end up smelling like healthy clean pups instead of potpourri. It has even been fantastic for my doxie mix's dry skin. We usually have to use a separate conditioner but no need with this stuff! I am so happy and will definitely be back for more when this runs out! read more

This place is awesome! The owner is super friendly and very helpful. She helped me find the perfect leash for my dog- a very good but pull-happy boxer mix named Chup-Chup (who is happy to be at large again in style). The leash I ended up with is really unique but unassuming at first glance- had I not asked for a recommendation, I would have overlooked this gem completely! The selection of leashes, collars, and treats is great. There's a great solution to so many doggie needs here, that you'll wonder why you wasted time going to those corporate stores that are like eight times the size of this place, with 1/3 the quality and inventory. Apparently there is a Happy Hour at the treat bar from 4-7 on week days, when the treats are half off! I perused but did not buy from a plethora of specialty dog treats- like a Whole Foods deli for dogs! Does it get any better than that? We'll be back for Happy Hour, for sure! read more
