Our family loves this place! Tropical Hut is always a fun place for us to stop. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and you can tell they truly care about the animals. They're very knowledgeable about their fish, snakes and reptiles they have in the store, and they're always happy to answer questions or share interesting facts. It's clear they take great care of their animals, and it makes the whole experience even better. Highly recommended for reptile lovers or anyone curious about exotic pets! Now the Cons: The location doesn't have a parking lot. So finding parking during the busy time of the day can be difficult. When you walk in it does sort of smell, but then again it is a pet store so keep that in mind. They definitely utilize the space that they are in (small space) so if you're claustrophobic this might be a challenge for you or I don't recommend going in. To be frank I should have read reviews, this is based on a old situation for my household ... but now I need to be honest seeing as how I wasn't the only one . This is a reptile store , yet they had hamsters- yes I was naive at the time - and I bought a little lady dwarf here. She passed within a year and had bad health , whilst I didn't blame the shop I do agree with other commitments based on there care and living arrangements for there animals . Good for supplies but why have hamsters at all ? There not feeder animal and they looked treated as something more... I felt as though I was rescuing - ill be honest I knew those where all red flags ... but again I was naive and excited for my first hamster ( mind you we already went to others - i was having a bad time finding dwarfs ) All I'm saying is perhaps your shop just needs to be educated, just because mice and rats are feeders its not like they can't live happily before..they.. pass And don't sell hamsters ? I bought a snake here it's a yellow belly ball python tho I will admittedly say they do have small tank sizes for the animals the health of the snake didn't seem to be affected and if you really want to see animals in "bad conditions" look at any other big breeding sites and you'll see the same if not worse as far as I'm concerned they are well fed and healths as a majority and when I bought it 2 year old ball python was and still is a perfect condition in his new 120 gallon tank (note) the glove in the pic is because he just got out of shed the week prior and this was the first time holding him sense he has never tried to bite me but I like to take percolations read more

This place has been incredibly helpful in every aspect of learning to take care of a snake. Great service, kind employees and they have everything you could possibly need. If you are looking to get a pet that is a reptile this is the place to go to get the right supplies and help you need. We also purchase mice there for feeding and the owner breeds them, so you know they will be free of disease and parasites. I have two ball pythons and picking up my bearded dragon tomorrow and I've had nothing but great experiences here. All of my animals have been healthy and no issues. We've been buying from them for the last 2 years and things have been great, and while yes they do keep the snakes in smaller tanks/cages, I firmly believe it's because they go through inventory. I regularly see the employees handling them and I don't think any animal there has been mistreated. They've also offered to help us with feeding for when my snakes don't want to eat at home! The rodents are crammed into small containers with pine bedding and no enrichment. The reptiles are crammed in tiny cages with no enrichment as well. The axolotls are housed together. And the workers were very rude! I will never go here again! If I could give 0 stars I would! I do NOT recommend!!!! read more

I used to come to tropical hut for absolutely everything years ago, but this place has taken a rapid decline. The conditions the animals are in are absolutely awful -- quarter inch of pine bedding, critter keepers too small for their size, no temperature regulation, living in filth. The store is small, they need to cut their animal inventory in half and create appropriate habitats for them. It's neglectful and endangering the health and safety of the animals. They are also repeatedly selling sick feeder crickets. The last 6 weeks I've gone in for feeders, one employee specifically has handed me bags that were nearly all dead, or nearly dead, sick crickets. Bad feeders can kill your pets. Conditions aside, the customer service has rapidly declined as well. Store employees are rude, are visibly annoyed when asked to help someone, and are incredibly uninformed. I stood in an aisle listening to a man attempting to buy his first tarantula and the blonde, pierced associate gave him a massive amount of incorrect information that would have killed that species within weeks. I had to stop him outside the door to give him proper resources and encouraged him to do his own research. I understand times are tough and staffing is hard, but having uninformed associates who don't bother to understand the necessary care for exotic animals, they shouldn't be allowed to maintain their care. Be rude to me, fine, but stop endangering the animals. This place was my "favorite" for years, going out of my way often just to come here. Now that I live three blocks away, I'll be driving elsewhere. They need a massive overhaul immediately. read more

Can't go in there anymore, despite the well stocked supplies and mostly nice staff. They have living, breathing animals living in the worst set-ups, in terrible conditions. You are hit with the smell when you walk in, and once you get past the crowded shelves you will see animals in small, inappropriate set-ups, stack on top of each other like merchandise, crowded into tanks and scratching at the glass to escape. If you have an ounce of a soul it is too hard to look at. I got desperate during the pandemic and went there for crickets. After feeding just one cricket to one tarantula it died, an issue I had never had getting my crickets elsewhere, and haven't had since, so you decide. It is a true shame they couldn't concentrate on becoming the best suppliers of the dry goods and set ups needed for exotics and leave the live animals out of it. read more

Wish I could give less than 1 star. This place should honestly be investigated for animal abuse and neglect. Not a single animal had adequate enclosures, and none of them were seen to have food or water available in their tanks. The only photos I have are of the ball pythons being kept in rat containers that wouldn't even be humane for a beta fish to be in. Makes me sick to my stomach to know that they have animals in the back too that are out of sight and probably in worse conditions. One ball pythons cage even had dried blood on the side of it. Leopard geckos need 20 gallon tanks or more and they were being kept in 10 gallons with dividers in the middle to hold two (5 gallons each). The $60 frogs were kept in better enclosures than the $800 snakes. Anyone purchasing live animals from this store, I hope they did research elsewhere and don't think that this is how animals especially reptiles should be kept. The rats were crammed in similar enclosures, so think about feeding your pets these rats that are probably sick. This place just has me at a loss for words, and they also breed their reptiles in store. read more

I've always liked Tropical Hut. I used to frequent the area but have since moved on. Do to insurance issues I've found myself in the area again. My Wife and I were walking by and decided to stop in. I was glad to see my buddy Tom working. Great guy and informative about the little creatures he sells. We watched some Geckos eating crickets. Awesomely gross. Great selection of Fish. They have a good selection and variety of Tetras. They also have a good selection of rodents, snakes and spiders. My Wife loves Rats. Ugh. Only my insatiable love for this woman makes me not cringe at the site of Gods creation in rodents, specifically Rats. She's so adorable. She pretty much loves most of Gods little ones. Not Ants! She haaaaaaaates ants. But Rats. Loves them. I see them as cat food and we have a very large Black Tabby that used to eat squirrels, so Rats are definitely on his menu. Any who. Tropical Hut has it all. From critter homes to fish tanks to food for your furry or scaly lil friends. Come check out their inventory and say hi to Tom. read more

The conditions that the snakes and other animals are kept in is inhumane and so so sad. The rats looked in awful condition. Animal lovers will agree, check it out for yourself and then document and report what you see. Employees were helpful and knowledgeable about the fish but very hard to understand how they could support animals in the store being kept in such awful conditions. I usually send my husband to come get a rat for our ball python but I decided to tag along recently. We adopted our BP from a different store when she was already full grown & has been a pain in terms of trying to switch her from live feeding to frozen thawed. (I can't stand the live feeding.) Seeing the conditions that the animals are kept in in this store make me hope & almost pray that she switches ASAP! Reptiles kept in small animal carriers (for a hermit crab or something.) Climates don't seem to be monitored. Rats being manhandled & kept in a small glass box, tons of them with no visible food or water. The group of employees & customers I had to squeeze by to get to the back of the store all stank of terrible B.O. I told my husband we needed to grab our overpriced stuff & leave immediately, thought I was going to be sick. I asked the person checking us out for advice on switching from live two frozen thawed as they said they have multiple ball pythons. They seemed a little annoyed at my questions, but if I were working in a store & someone asked general care questions for an animal I knew more about, like a cat or ferret, I'd be more than happy to help them so their pet gets better care. Keeping my fingers crossed that another reptile store opens up more west, closer to Aloha so I don't feel so bad driving 30+ min just to go to this depressing place every few weeks. read more

Coming from a ball python breeder, the animals looked semi healthy despite being held in cricket carriers. It was really saddening to see these beautiful morphs held in such poor quality care. None of them had hides and they were stacked on top of eachother in the cricket carriers. They seemed to be fairly healthy, despite their living conditions. If I had the capital I would've bought them all just to put them in better enclosures. If you are looking for a fairly healthy snake, with interesting markings I would check them out. Just know going in their set up is really sad. read more

Tropical hut is a Portland institution that I'm so glad is still around. My dad used to take us here in the 80's to get new fish. I now take my kids to get food for their reptiles. When you come in, you will find all sorts of smaller animals (the kind that generally live in enclosures like a tank) and supplies that one would use to take care of those pets. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I've come in with weird questions and they generally have the answer I was looking for. You should check it out! I would like to start by saying that this is my first Yelp review ever. I am an animal lover and an avid advocate for animal rights. This pet store was like hell on earth and I can't imagine how this business has gone on for so long. Imagine Walmart, but instead of discount groceries and guns there are live, breathing animals that need love and care. Upon entering there are rows and rows of over priced items - but don't worry, the stink of the place will hit you before your credit card bill comes in the mail. The fish, especially the Betas, are lethargic at best and can hardly move. The mice and rats are so confined that they have to crawl over each other for a drink of water. When I looked at the reptiles, their food bowls were dry and not a single one had water. There are stacks and stacks of spiders and tarantulas with barely an inch to move. And, my personal favorite, they have a collection of about 20 or so $300 snakes in tiny containers who probably haven't seen sunlight or human contact in who knows how long. Actually, come to think of it - this is my personal vendetta: The staff was extremely unkind and downright insulting when I asked questions. I feel extremely sad for each and every poor animal that is trapped in that pit. Unfortunately, Yelp can only let me rate this disgusting pet store as a 1. If I had my choice, I'd give it a -100 and adopt every single one of those beautiful animals and give them proper care. read more

Every time I have asked a question they have given me more than answers, they have given me support in my reptile owning journey! I hate leaving a bad review for any business, and the staff seem like nice people. However, the turtles are not in appropriate set ups for aquatic reptiles that product a lot of waste. They need bigger tanks and frequent water changes. The tortoise enclosures also leave a lot to be desired. The feeder rats, while I understand are critical to feeding the snakes, live in hot aquariums with no stimulation, toys, or ventilation. I literally saw a domestic hooded rat laying on its stomach, flat and looking like it was suffocating. If this store could make some major revisions, focusing on the quality of the animals enclosures and not the amount of reptiles per capita that they can stack into a small place, it could be a great store. read more

I have purchased a number of snakes from Tropical Hut on the rare occasion where there has been a problem, the staff and the owner go above and beyond to make things right. I currently have 4 snakes from there, 2 of which are over 15 years old. Prices are very competitive to what I have seen on-line. The staff and owner are really good people. I have mixed feelings. I bought a rat here- I'd call it a rescue really. She was very ill. Full of Pneumonia and Myco, underweight, missing patches of hair and bites everywhere from being placed in terribly over cramped quarters. I truly thought it was a mercy purchase and she would die within the week. I had to pick between about five of these ex-breeders who all looked like they wished death would just happen already there was zero hope in their eyes. They were scruffy, sick, underweight, full of bites and they were obviously uncomfortable. I picked her because she was missing the most hair but truly it was awful seeing animals in those conditions. Well after so much love, homemade chow, medication, cuddles and nose boops Xena is thriving. She's the sweetest rat that we have. Here is my problem. I am not a fan of culling rats but please cull your pinkies and elderly at this point. There were so many rats in such small aquariums that they couldn't event lie down. They were sleeping standing up against the glass because the floor of the aquarium was solidly packed with rats smeared in feces and that's abuse- even if you think they are nothing more than food. You should treat your stock better. Rats are highly intelligent, they feel pain and frustration and depression and your population is too high. Manage your populations responsibly. Give old breeders a chance to feel the warmth of love- your rats have death and diseases written all over them. You used them up until you couldn't get anymore money out of their babies for snake food. At least you could be kind to them, make sure they aren't dying of pneumonia, give them room to sleep, remove aggressive rats, price them as pets. I'm torn because I know the rats that need adopted most are at your store waiting miserably for death and I will probably keep rescuing there but that just makes it seem okay to you to House animals this way and it's not. I felt sick to my stomach when we left with her. Your store makes me feel so sad when we visit. I wish you weren't allowed to sell rats and mice at all. read more

Been in there plenty of times with my backpack on and they've never taken it before and I've never stolen from this place I just don't wanna pay for plastic bags so I bring my back pack I'm half Mexican and half white I don't wanna say this is racial profiling or anything but I was the only brown skinned person in there and the lady asked for my bag super aggressively and when I handed it to her she like snatched it out of my hand horrible customer service and I only went in to save fish from that place horrible conditions for their animals dead fish in their aquarium's constantly not enough room for their rats gerbils hamsters snakes lizards turtles and tortoises I'm just never giving them my money again they were so blatantly rude and when I asked for my bag back I said "I think I just want to leave the lady took my bag can I have it back you can search thru it if you want" she did not search through it and I do not have items in my back pack other then my own didn't even apologize read more

wish there was an option for Zero Star Rating. The owner Terrie sells SICK DYING REPTILES and she'll happily push you out her store uneducated while encouraging you to spend more money at her store. the owner sold me a $400 Lesser Crystal Ball Python snake that unfortunately died within 7 days of rehoming him and I never got a refund; in fact in owner suggested after his death and 'with his lifeless body in my hands' that I in fact need to spend more money at her store. . . !! I found out after his passing from a veterinarian that my ball python was sold to me sick and had a stomach infection. after I showed up to Tropical Hut and showed The Owner my ball python she immediately blamed it on me and not her staff or herself for selling me a ball python without educating me properly and selling me all the wrong supplies he needed ... they even told me he needs a RED LIGHT for his enclosure.. ! later researching that red light is bad for ball pythons ‍ most horrible experience I've ever experienced while dealing with a "professional" and we are still suffering from his unexpected (in my part) death. my whole family and I have been spreading awareness since. please save yourself a broken heart and find a good reptile shop. there are so many other good ones in Oregon! read more

My partner and I have purchased quite a few animals and equipment from this shop. While I try to shop locally when possible, I feel that the care of the animals in this shop is on par with the dreaded Petsmart and Petco. The leopard gecko enclosures look like they are rarely cleaned (they have piles of defecation in them... These geckos generally do their duty ONCE a day) and it is apparent they're cleaned out less than once every 1-2 weeks. This care seems commonplace for all of their geckos and bearded dragons. The workers are generally pleasant and their prices are fair. The store is fairly dirty (especially the floors). They have an expanse selection of tarantulas which is what has kept us coming back. I do hope they strive to take better care of their animals, as that is what they should be all about. read more

Very nice people, usually well stocked with hard goods and multiple types of live foods. They are helpful and knowledgeable. I have bought Dart Frogs, Fish, aquatic plants and more from them. During lock-down they have tried their best to continue to keep providing to their clientele the necessities for our pets to thrive. Like pet shops the world over (and I have visited pet shops everywhere I have ever traveled), there are times when the shop is not at its optimal best. However, I visit often enough to know that such times are rare. Like retail stores of every type, housekeeping can take a backseat to keeping the stock in good shape, in their case livestock, in other types of stores keeping the stock assortment well represented. I have worked in retail stores for over 50 years, so perhaps I have a greater understanding of how businesses handle the challenges of day to day operations. I have also lived with, and cared for, an unusually diverse number of animals. Keeping all of the balls in the air is a constant battle. Tropical Hut does this very well. read more

I can't support this pet store that puts so many animals in the smallest tanks, cages, and Tupperware. This whole place is beyond sand and I feel horrible for all the animals. The snakes literally can't even move in what they have them in. All the bearded dragons were trying to get out. The rats were eating glue on the inside of the tank. They have yummy doggie food (I know quality dog food when I taste it) in both canned and dry form. The only thing I'm really snobby about when it comes to pets is the fact that my dog is allergic to corn which is what comprises 90% of the doggie foods that are sold in most chain stores (and all super markets). I have to admit this was the last place that I imagined would carry what I needed - I believe the sign has "Aquarium" and "Fishes" on it so it looked like the kind of place that really "cool" people (people who buy snakes and lizards) go to. Low and behold they have food and treats Mr. Bode totally digs! The store clerks also offer a club card so they can track what you purchase most often, and give you 1 free whatever after you purchase 10 whatevers. My only warning would be to not stay and chit chat too long, as you will go home smelling like gerbil dandruff and turtle feces, with just a splash of Eau de Ferret. read more
